Red Sox seek 5th straight win at Yankee Stadium
BOSTON RED SOX (34-26)
at NEW YORK YANKEES (33-25)
First Pitch: Wednesday, 7:05 p.m. EDT
Line: New York -120, Boston +110, Total: 10
The Red Sox and Yankees continue their three-game series on Wednesday with Boston looking to improve to 5-0 against New York in the Bronx this season. Jon Lester improved to 8-2 on the season on Tuesday as the Red Sox defeated the Yankees in the series opener, 6-4.
Tim Wakefield (2-1, 4.40 ERA) will get the start for Boston, looking for its fifth straight win overall. Now in his 17th season with the Red Sox, Wakefield is 2-0 with a 3.20 ERA since returning to the rotation May 2,2 but missed out on a win Wednesday when he gave up four runs over his final three innings against the White Sox. He's 2-0 in his past four starts against the Yankees despite a 4.71 ERA. Wakefield gave up five runs over five innings to New York on Oct. 2 and did not get a decision in a 6-5 defeat. Overall Wakefield is 11-17 with a 4.90 ERA in 56 games against the Yankees (34 starts), which includes going 6-7 with a 3.59 ERA in 24 games (15 starts) at New York.
A.J. Burnett (6-3, 3.86 ERA) will get the start for the Yankees. Burnett is 2-0 with a 3.44 ERA in his past three starts, after going 0-2 in his previous three starts. He has allowed 3 ER or fewer in nine of his 12 starts this season, and he’s 5-1 with a 3.63 ERA in seven home starts this year. Those five wins already match his season total for 2010 when he was just 5-7 with a 4.59 ERA in his 14 Yankee Stadium outings. After going 5-0 with a 2.56 ERA in eight starts against Boston while with the Blue Jays from 2006-2008, Burnett is 0-3 with a woeful 8.33 ERA and 1.88 WHIP in his seven starts against the Red Sox in a Yankees uniform. This will be just his second start against Boston in the Bronx, where he had his best outing as a Yankee against the Red Sox, allowing just one hit over 7.1 innings in getting a no-decision in a game the Yankees eventually won.
Mark Teixeira, who leads the Yankees with 18 HR and 41 RBI, left Tuesday’s game after getting hit by a pitch in the right kneecap by Jon Lester in the first inning. Subsequent X-rays were negative and he will be re-evaluated Wednesday. The Red Sox offense has really taken off during their four-game win streak, scoring 29 runs and hitting .306 as a team. I like them to continue that trend against Burnett, who has struggled against them recently. I’m taking Boston.
The FoxSheets provide another trend advising bettors to play against Burnett and the Yankees.
A.J. BURNETT is 4-15 (21.1%, -16.6 Units) against the money line when playing against a team with a winning record over the last 2 seasons. (Team's Record). The average score was BURNETT 4.5, OPPONENT 6.4 - (Rating = 3*).
