Monday’s betting tips: Big Z disses Cubs closer

    Who’s hot

NHL: Boston is 7-1 in its last eight home games and about 67 percent of bettors are currently siding with the Bruins.

NHL: Vancouver is riding an 8-3 run as an underdog.

MLB: The over is 9-2-1 in Philadelphia’s last 11 overall.

    Who’s not

NHL: The under is 1-5-2 in Vancouver’s last eight road games.

MLB: Cleveland is just 3-8 in its last 11.

MLB: Oakland has won only two of its last 10 road games.

MLB: The Chicago Cubs are 5-16 in their last 21 meetings with Cincinnati.

    Key stat

7:26 – Manny Malhotra played just 7:26 for the Vancouver Canucks in Game 2, but his presence on the bench alone was a big lift for the team. It was the first time he suited up since he suffered a serious eye injury in March that could have ended his career. Malhotra picked up right where he left off, winning six of his seven faceoffs in Vancouver’s 3-2 overtime win.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Jimmy Rollins, Philadelphia Phillies: The Phillies expect to be without their starting shortstop for at least a few days after he was forced out of Saturday’s game with a bruised knee. Rollins tried to stay in the game after fouling a pitch off his right knee, but left a couple of innings later and didn’t play Sunday. The club lists him as day-to-day and hopes he won’t have to go on the DL.

    Game of the day

Vancouver Canucks at Boston Bruins (-120, 5)

    Notable quotable

“This was maybe our worst game of the playoffs, but because we got a couple of goals everyone thinks we played great.” – Henrik Sedin after his Vancouver Canucks beat Boston in overtime in Game 2. The Canucks have managed at least three goals in four of their last five.

    Notes and tips

Chicago Cubs righthander Carlos Zambrano blasted his team - and closer Carlos Marmol in particular - following Sunday's 3-2, 10-inning loss at St. Louis. Chicago's sixth straight loss, which came on Albert Pujols' second walk-off homer in as many days, left Zambrano fuming, saying the Cubs play like a "Triple-A team" and calling the team "embarrassing." Big Z continued to say "the problem wasn't Pujols, the problem was (Marmol's slider to Theriot, who later scored on Pujols' homer). ... We should know that Ryan Theriot is not a good fastball hitter. We should know that as a team. We should play better here."We stink. That's all I've got to say."

Cleveland Indians outfielder Shin-Soo Choo is having a tough time dealing with a DUI charge he picked up earlier this year. The slugger says it’s still affecting his play. “My first country is Korea, but I've lived here 11 years,” he told reporters. “This is my country, too. I have two different countries, so I worry about more fans. That happened last month. So I wanted to play good in the field, show better play and then try to make people forget.” The Indians gave him a day off over the weekend to try to snap him out of a slump that saw him go just 4-for-23 and Cleveland has won just twice over the last eight games, including back-to-back shutouts heading into Monday’s game against Minnesota.

Joakim Soria could be back in the closer’s role for the Kansas City Royals soon. After firing a pair of scoreless innings in two relief appearances since being booted from the closing job, manager Ned Yost likes the progress Soria is making. "He’s had three knockout innings … another one or two (good outings) and he’ll be ready to move back in," Yost said. "I’m not sure he’s not ready right now … but I want to give him (at least) one more." Aaron Crow has been working the ninth lately, but hasn’t had a save chance.

Tiger Woods is still unsure whether his knee and Achilles injuries will allow him to take part in the U.S. Open later this month, but the books still have him listed as the second favorite to win the tournament. Woods checks in at +1000, just behind Phil Mickleson (+900)

      Monday's six-pack

-- Baseball's amateur draft is Monday night on the MLB Network, not as big a deal as the NFL or NBA Draft, but it'll be interesting.

-- First place in French Open tennis was worth $1,756,080; 2nd place was worth $878,040, exactly half as much.

-- Endy Chavez is 21-49 (.429) in his first 14 games for the Rangers.

-- If Sarah Palin gets elected President, I'm going condo shopping up in Canada, and I hate cold weather. She's a freakin' nitwit.

-- Speaking of Canada, CFL training camps are open now, so there will be pro football played somewhere on this continent this fall.

-- How come people in TV shows never watch TV?

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend........

      13) If the Mets trade Jose Reyes this summer, Met fans should boycott the rest of the season; if they can't pay him, then they shouldn't own a big league ballclub, especially a big market team. They're paying Jason Bay $16M a year thru 2013, they can afford to pay Reyes.

      12) Reyes is hitting .395 at home this season; he has 10 triples in his 124 ABs at Citi Field- his hitting is tailor-made for the spacious outfield gaps at Citi Field. For the Mets to trade him would be ridiculous.

      11) Phillies had runners at 1st/3rd, two out in Pittsburgh, when Domonic Brown hit a line drive up the middle, a sure hit, until it hit the umpire in the leg. Ball immediately becomes dead, the batter gets a hit, but runners stay where they are (runner on 1st moves up to 2nd). No common sense used, since it was an obvious hit, but thats the rule. Pretty sad that the ump was 110 or so feet from home plate and couldn't get out of the way.

      10) Red Sox pushed Clay Buchholz' next start back to Friday in Toronto, with Tim Wakefield starting in the Bronx Wednesday. Buchholz' back is acting up, so he gets a couple extra days to rest.

      9) When you vote for the All-Star teams this year, remember that for this year, the best SS in the AL is Cleveland's Asdrubal Cabrera; he has nine more RBI than any other AL shortstop. He's knocked in 21.3% of guys who were on base when he batted, which is 3rd in the AL for hitters who have had 100+ ABs. For this year, he's been the best shortstop so far.

      8) For those of you offended by the idea that Derek Jeter shouldn't be automatically anointed the AL shortstop, keep in mind that he's come up to bat with a man on 2nd base this season 57 times, and knocked the guy in twice. He's come up with a man on first 50 times; he knocked none of them in. He still makes $20M+, but he ain't the best shortstop anymore.

      7) Then there is Reds' 2B Brandon Phillips, who has come up with a man on third base 20 times, and knocked him in 15 times. Thats production.

      6) These reality shows on History Channel are going more mainstream; George Stephanopolous is on Pawn Stars tonight. William Shatner and his wife were on American Pickers last season. They're both good shows.

      5) Nationals-Diamondbacks had some tension this weekend; Washington hit Justin Upton four times this weekend, and then both managers were tossed after batters were hit in Sunday's game. Starting pitcher Marquis was tossed with Washington leading 1-0 in the 6th inning; you don't see that every day.

      4) Diamondbacks probably have the coaching staff made up of the best former players: Gibson-Baylor-Trammell-Matt Williams.

      3) I'm not usually a guy who calls for coaches' heads, but as an A's fan, it is time for Bob Geren to go away; for a team with Oakland's pitching to be 27-33, its inexcuseable. It took him 56 games to move Daric Barton out of the #2 hole (he is 7-14 in the #6 slot). Plus, he came up in the Bronx system, so let him go work for them. Time for Mike Gallego to take over as manager and get the squad back on track.

      2) I was reading an article on Oklahoma basketball coach Lon Kruger this weekend, and it said that he talks to every player on his team before each and every practice, even if it means starting practices late. This is what a leader does, yet Brian Fuentes and Huston Street both claim that Geren never communicates(d) with them. What else does he have to do?

      1) This is a note I posted for yesterday's Den:

      2) The next time Albert Pujols gets walked intentionally with the bases empty and two out in extra innings, remember Saturday, when the Cubs stupidly tried to "pitch carefully" to the great slugger, and he drilled the walk-off HR off his shoetops into the leftfield bullpen. Either challenge him or intentionally walk him. Don't pussyfoot around- thats what the Cubs did Saturday and it cost them the game.

Guess how Sunday's game ended? Right, only Pujols homered with none out instead of two. Best part of it for Cardinal fans was they way Pujols strutted home from third base. Not the strut of a guy who was going to sign with that other team next winter.

Canucks won Game 1 on a goal with 0:18 left to play; they won second game on goal 0:11 in OT, so Bruins are now 5-22 in last 27 Stanley Cup Finals games. Keep in mind that in first round of playoffs, Boston lost first two games of series at home and still won series, but Vancouver is best team in NHL this year, and has now won seven of last eight games overall. Boston has one even strength goal in 120:11 in series, and only three goals in last 180:11, counting Game 7 of Lightning series. Canucks are 18-69 on power play in playoffs; Bruins are an awful 6-74. Canucks are 5-3 on road in playoffs. Game 3 is much more important for Boston.

Canucks at Bruins: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver Canucks at Boston Bruins (-113, 5)

        THE STORY
: Alex Burrows was not suspended for his actions in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals. In Game 2 on Saturday, Burrows took another bite out of the Boston Bruins by scoring 11 seconds into overtime to give the Vancouver Canucks a 3-2 victory and a 2-0 edge in the series. The overtime goal was the second fastest in Stanley Cup Finals history, as Montreal Canadiens center Brian Skrudland scored nine seconds into the extra session in Game 2 of the 1986 series against the Calgary Flames. Fast forward back to the present, the Canucks will look to push to the Bruins to the brink of elimination when the teams reconvene at TD Garden in Boston on Monday for Game 3 of the best-of-seven series.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, VERSUS, CBC

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Fellow Vezina Trophy finalist Tim Thomas stopped 30 shots in Game 2, but made a questionable challenge at Burrows during overtime. Burrows skated around the fallen goaltender - and then behind the net - before his wraparound ended the contest. Vancouver native Milan Lucic scored for just the third time in 30 games and Mark Recchi netted his 59th career playoff goal. The 43-year-old Recchi became the oldest player in NHL history to score in the Stanley Cup Finals. Captain Zdeno Chara logged a game-high 28:12 of ice time in Game 2.

ABOUT THE CANUCKS: In addition to his overtime winner, Burrows scored his team's first goal and set up Hart Trophy finalist Daniel Sedin's tying marker midway through the third period. That's quite the performance from Burrows, who many believed would be suspended after his alleged bite of Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron at the conclusion of the first period in Wednesday's Game 1. Fourth-liner Manny Malhotra sent the Rogers Arena faithful into a frenzy by making a triumphant return from a gruesome eye injury. Malhotra, who had been sidelined since March 16, logged nearly 7 1/2 minutes of ice time and won five of six faceoffs. Vezina Trophy finalist Roberto Luongo turned aside 28 shots in Game 2 and increased his save percentage to .928 in the playoffs.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: Boston center David Krejci, who had an assist in Game 2, has nine goals and set up eight others in his last 13 games. Daniel Sedin has one goal and five assists in his last four contests.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Boston, which went 1-for-3 on the power play in Game 2, is now 1-for-9 with the man advantage in the series. Taken a bit further, the Bruins have scored just once in their last 23 power-play opportunities. Vancouver is just 1-for-8 with the man advantage in this series.

LAST WORD: "(The NHL) made a decision. We moved on. For us, if we start using that as an excuse, we're a lame team. To me, it's not even a consideration." - Boston coach Claude Julien, on whether Burrows should have been allowed to play in Game 2 following his altercation with Bergeron.

TRENDS: Boston is 6-1 in its last seven playoff games as a favorite.

The over is 3-0-1 in Vancouver's last four playoff games as an underdog and 5-1-2 in Vancouver's last eight road games.

The favorite is 5-2 in the last seven meetings between the Bruins and Canucks.

Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bet
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver Canucks at Boston Bruins (-125, 5)

Manny Malhotra stole the spotlight early in his first game since March after suffering a serious eye injury, but it was Alexander Burrows who took over that.

It was a big game for Burrows too after he escaped a suspension from the league for allegedly biting Patrice Bergeron’s finger in Game 1 and he came up huge, scoring twice – including the overtime winner – and setting up another goal.

With Malhotra back in the lineup, Vancouver’s depth is starting to show through. The Canucks still haven’t played their best game yet and they’ve already jumped out to a 2-0 series lead as they head to Boston for Game 3.

However, this series is still up for grabs and the Bruins will show up in front of their home crowd. We expected a long battle between these two teams and nothing has happened yet to make you think otherwise at this point.

“We have not been down by two games since we lost the first two at home to Montreal in the first round,” Boston goaltender Tim Thomas told reporters. “At least now we are going home. In that series, we went on the road. We have to look at how we won Game 3 of the Montreal series and use it as a blue print.”

That’s exactly the kind of mindset the Bruins need going into Monday’s game. Their power play finally clicked a bit in Game 2 and that unit with the man advantage could be huge in Game 3.

We’ll jump on the Boston bandwagon – for a day, anyway.

        Pick: Bruins

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Monday’s streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                STREAKING

Ted Lilly (4-4, 4.22 ERA), Chicago Cubs

You could do a lot worse than Ted Lilly as your No. 3 starter in your rotation. Sure, Lilly won’t blow anyone away with overpowering stuff the way teammate Clayton Kershaw does, but the 35-year-old lefty can paint the corners of the strike zone.

Lilly comes into Monday’s game against the Phillies on the heels of three consecutive quality starts. He owns a 2.70 ERA and a 15-1 strikeout to walk ratio over that three-start stretch, too.

The veteran hurler was particularly effective in his last turn in the rotation, holding the Colorado Rockies to two runs on four hits over seven innings.

Lilly and the Dodgers are big underdogs Monday on the road against the Phillies.

Michael Pineda (6-2, 2.30 ERA), Seattle Mariners

It’s not just King Felix M’s fans are raving about these days up in Seattle. Rookie flamethrower Michael Pineda is blowing opposing batters away and is a big part of the reason the Mariners are over .500 despite owning one of the worst offenses in the big leagues.

"What's not to like? He's got good command for a young guy," Orioles manager Buck Showalter told reporters after his team faced Pineda. "They tell me he's grown four or five inches. I hope he doesn't grow any more, but he's special. He has a chance to be really good. He can attack you with a fastball, and not many people can do that anymore in the American League.”

Oddsmakers are wise to the kid’s capabilities. They’ve installed him as chalk in each of his last four starts and even posted a 5.5-run total (the lowest baseball over/under line this writer has ever seen) in his interleague start at San Diego.

Despite the favorite lines, the 6-foot-7 righty is still a plus money pitcher ($238) and the M’s are 3-1 in his last four trips to the mound.

                SLUMPING

Scott Baker (2-4, 3.86 ERA), Minnesota Twins

You have to have a special type of bad luck to be losing as frequently as the Twins are this season. The same club that was favored to win the AL Central is very close to picking up its 40th loss and we’re only two months in the campaign.

Scott Baker has witnessed that poor fortune first hand. He is 0-2 and the Twins are 0-5 in his five turns in the rotation despite a not-so-awful 5.08 ERA over that period.

Either way, backing Baker or the Twins is risky business these days.

Max Scherzer (6-2, 4.38 ERA), Detroit Tigers

Scherzer was enjoying one of the finest starts of his young career before an ugly bump in the road popped up. The big righty allowed seven runs in back to back starts and surrendered 16 hits, including three home runs, in the process.

The recent slump has pushed his ERA from 2.98 to 4.38 and his WHIP (walks + hits per inning) sits at an ugly 1.47.

"I'm not throwing the ball very well right now," Scherzer told the Detroit Free Press. "At times I am, but in big situations I'm getting caught not executing pitches. That's what is costing me.”

That’s not what you want to hear from a pitcher who’s about to face one of the toughest batting lineups in baseball.

Hot lines: Monday’s best MLB bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Brewers at Florida Marlins (+110, 8.5)

Maybe the Brewers are finally over their issues on the road after winning their first three games of a four-game set in Florida.

Milwaukee is a league-best 19-6 since May 9 but still sit only 9-19 on the road this season, compared to 21-7 at home. They aren’t making life easy on Brewers supporters though.

They had to pitch themselves out of a ton of jams over the weekend and left way too many men on base, but still managed to book three one-run wins against Florida with some timely hits.

Josh Wilson was the man of the hour in Sunday’s 6-5 win, homering in 11th inning in his first start with the team since getting picked up off waivers about a month ago.

"You live for those situations," Wilson told reporters. "It's late in the game, and you have a chance to win a game or just contribute and help the team, so it was exactly the spot I wanted to be.”

With Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun raking in the middle of the lineup and other guys like Wilson stepping up in supporting roles, we’re going to ride this hot streak as long as possible.

                  Pick: Brewers

Colorado Rockies at San Diego Padres (-105, 7)

A little more than a week ago the Colorado Rockies’ bats went mental in a 15-4 rout of the St. Louis Cardinals. It looks like they should have saved a few of those runs for another day.

The Rockies haven’t scored more than three runs in a game since, winning just two of those seven contests. That isn’t the extent of their problems either.

"There's no one area, it's just generally the ballclub as a whole,” Rockies manager Jim Tracy recently told reporters. ”So the ballclub as a whole that got itself into this mess is the same ball club as a whole that has to get itself the heck out of this mess."

And what a mess it is. The Rockies were just 8-21 in the month of May and June hasn’t been any better yet.

We aren’t ready to back them just yet, but their offense could get something going against Clayton Richard. He lasted just 4 2/3 innings in his last trip to the hill and walked four batters.

These two clubs have played over the total in 13 of their last 16 meetings and we’ll jump on that trend for Monday’s game.

                  Pick: Over
