MLB Odds: Minnesota Twins end set at Royals

The bottom two teams of the American League Central standings continue their four-game series Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 11:10 a.m. (PT) at Kauffman Stadium.

Facing off against each other seven times already during the 2011 campaign heading into Saturday, Kansas City held a 4-3 advantage over Minnesota. Kansas City has been outscored 13-4 in dropping the first two games of this particular series, which is surprising due to Minnesota averaging just 3.57 runs per contest.

The Royals had a four-game winning streak against their division rivals snapped with Thursday’s 8-2 defeat.

“It’s a tough first two games, especially with the Twins struggling. You want to get them when they’re down,” Royals first baseman Billy Butler stated. “You really want to take advantage of it when they’re down, but we’re not doing that right now.

The Royals are 3-10 in their last 13 games entering Saturday’s matchup, which includes five-and-three-game losing streaks. Total bettors will find that despite the club’s own offensive woes, the 'over' has cashed in eight of its last 10 games overall.

Left-handed starter Jeff Francis (2-5, 4.46 ERA) is set to make his 13th start of the season and the squad has alternated wins and losses over his last four outings. He tallied a 7-3 home win over the Angels last time out, giving up three runs and scattering eight hits over seven strong innings.

Francis has been solid at Kauffman Stadium this year, registering an even 2-2 mark and 3.09 ERA, issuing just 11 walks in 46 2/3 innings. In two previous starts versus the Twins, the former first-round draft pick has notched a 1-0 record and 3.38 ERA, including a no-decision in a 4-3 road loss on April 12. He allowed three runs and eight hits while striking out five in seven frames in that particular effort.

Minnesota won the first two games of this series after falling 20 games under .500 for the first time since 2000. The club’s record on the road improved to 13-22 with the back-to-back wins.

The Twins lineup has only faced 13 left-handed starters this season, posting a 6-7 record in those games. Minnesota has also won just three of its nine Sunday contests.

Southpaw hurler Brian Duensing (2-5, 5.37 ERA) will try to snap a five-game losing streak Sunday, as he comes off one of his worst starts of the 2011 campaign. He surrendered six runs on nine hits in just 4 2/3 innings at Detroit on May 31.

Duensing has had all kinds of trouble on the road so far, posting a 1-3 record and 5.35 ERA, allowing opponents to hit for a .299 batting average. He will want to be extremely careful with Kansas City’s Wilson Betemit, who is hitting .462 (6 for 13) with a home run and two RBIs against him.

The Twins are 4-1 in Duensing’s last five starts versus the Royals and the ‘under’ is 4-1 in his last seven Sunday starts.

Cory Blaser, in just his second season as a roving fill-in among the umpire crews, is slated to work the dish in this contest. The 29-year-old will be behind the plate for just his ninth MLB game and brings a level 4-4 'over/under' record for his short career into the contest.

Weather forecasts suggest a game-time temp in the low-90s in the Kansas City area and a west breeze of 5-10 mph (out to right). Both games at Kauffman Stadium have gone ‘over’ the total with that particular wind direction.

MLB Betting: NY Mets wrap series with Braves

The New York Mets host the Atlanta Braves in the finale of a three-game set at Citi Field before embarking on a 10-game road trip that will conclude against the same team.

The Braves opened as 140 favorites according to the Don Best odds screen, and the final game will be broadcast on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball at 5:05 p.m. (PT).

Atlanta had won 10 of the previous 12 meetings with New York heading into Saturday’s matchup, including four straight on the road. The Braves went 3-3 during a six-game homestand before starting a 10-game road trip at Citi Field.

They rallied to win Friday's series opener, 6-3, as slight 110 chalk. Atlanta scored five runs in the eighth and ninth innings to win behind Eric Hinske, who filled in for rookie Jordan Schafer after he fouled a ball off his face in the fifth inning.

Friday's victory was Atlanta's third in the first four meetings with the Mets this season. The Braves claimed a series at home over New York in mid-April.

The Braves will send starting pitcher Tim Hudson to the mound Sunday off a rough stretch that has seen him go 0-1 in his last three starts with a 5.94 ERA. Hudson is 4-4 overall on the season with a 3.75 ERA, but he has struggled away from home with a 2-2 mark and a 5.33 ERA.

In his last road start back on May 20 against the Los Angeles Angels, Hudson endured his worst and shortest outing of the year, surrendering eight runs and seven hits in just 3 2/3 innings of an eventual 9-0 loss. However, he does own a career record of 13-6 against New York with a 3.41 ERA.

The Mets will counter with knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (2-6, 4.39 ERA), who is 0-2 lifetime against Atlanta in six games – including three starts – with a 5.56 ERA. They have lost five of Dickey’s last six starts overall, the exception being a 2-1 victory against the Yankees on May 20.

Dickey’s struggles have mostly been at home, where he is 0-5 in six starts with a 5.40 ERA. He suffered a tough-luck 5-1 loss to Pittsburgh there last time out on Tuesday, allowing three runs and five runs and notching a career-high 10 strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings of work.

The ‘over’ is 7-4 in Dickey’s starts this season and was 11-1-1 in New York’s previous 13 games overall heading into Saturday. The ‘over’ is also 7-4 in Hudson’s starts this year.

Fieldin Culbreth will be donning the mask to call the balls and strikes for the series final. The 'over' is 7-5 in his previous 12 plate assignments with home 'dogs cashing just once in three tries.

The weather chould be a factor with the forecast calling for a 50 percent chance of scattered evening thunderstorms in Queens. First pitch should find upper-60s on the thermometer with a stouh wind at 10 mph (out to left-center).

      Sunday's Tips

      June 4, 2011

There’s no shortage of baseball on Sunday with 15 games on the board. But we’ve got most of those matches kicking off early in the afternoon. The Fish and Brew Crew continue their series in South Florida, while Atlanta wraps up its series with the Mets in the Big Apple in primetime. Let’s look at both tilts.

Braves at Mets – 8:00 p.m. EDT, ESPN

Disappointment is in the air at Citi Field when the Braves and Mets play the third and final game of their series. Atlanta was supposed to be a real threat to the Phillies in the National League East, but they’re 2 ½-games down on them and it might as well be 20-games. New York expected to be bad, but they’re disappointing skipper Terry Collins to the point of going mad in press conferences.

Tim Hudson (4-4, 3.75) has had a tough go of it for the Braves, and is looking to get back on track. Atlanta has lost three of his last four starts, with all of those defeats coming at Turner Field. Things have been a bit easier for the Bravos when the former stud for the A’s pitches away from home as they’ve won his last two road starts. It also doesn’t hurt that Hudson is 13-6 with a 3.41 earned run average in 20 career starts against the Mets. Plus, he’s 3-0 with an ERA of 1.80 so far at Citi Field.

New York is set to counter with knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (2-6, 4.39) on Sunday night. 2011 has not been kind to Dickey after a strong campaign a year ago. But perhaps things are looking up for him. He struck out 10 and gave up just three earned runs in his last start, a 5-1 loss at home to Pittsburgh on Tuesday. However, he has not fared well against Atlanta in his career by going 0-2 with a 5.56 ERA in six appearances.

We’re most likely looking at the Braves as road favorites for this contest. Atlanta is 8-9 for the season as a road “chalk,” but is on a 3-1 run currently in this role. New York is 0-4 this season as a home pup against divisional foes.

      Brewers at Marlins – 1:10 p.m. EDT

Not much was suspected of the Marlins and Brewers before the season began. Yet here they both stand in second place of their respective divisions. While it’s too soon to say if one, both or neither are bound for the playoffs, we are treated to good matchup at Sun Life Stadium.

Milwaukee has penciled Chris Narveson (2-4, 4.68) in as the starter on Sunday afternoon. The southpaw is in desperate need of a good start right now. Narveson has lasted just 7.1 innings in his last two starts, giving up 11 earned runs in the process. The odds are against him in this spot as the Brew Crew are 0-6 with him starting on the road this season. Plus, Narveson is 0-2 with a 5.11 ERA in his career versus Florida.

The Marlins are entrusting the start to Anibal Sanchez (5-1, 2.57) for the third game of this four-game series. Sanchez is picking up the slack with Josh Johnson on the disabled list right now with the Fish winning his last five starts. And he’s not just taking advantage of offensive support; he’s dominating the opposition. In his last five starts, Sanchez has lasted at least seven innings and given up a total of just five earned runs. Florida has enjoyed his work at home this season by going 4-1 in those five outings.

Even though this looks like a huge mismatch, there is a reason to take a shot with the Brewers. The Marlins have been home faves against lefties five times in 2011; they’ve gone 1-4 in those games. And those games were when the Fish were at least $1.30 home favorites.
