Sunday's betting tips: Rain in the forecast for Roland Garros

Odds to watch: Miami Heat at Dallas Mavericks (-2.5, 188.5)

Steam moves on the Heat +3 have pushed the spread for Game 3 of the NBA Finals to Dallas -2.5. The Mavericks are a stellar 13-3-1 against the spread with a 6-2 ATS mark inside the American Airlines Center this postseason. Expect action on the home side, especially if this line dips to -2.

Weather watch: French Open Men’s Final

Rafael Nadal (-250) and Roger Federer (+175) meet again in a Grand Slam final. The tennis legends could be battling the elements at Roland Garros. Thunder showers are in the forecast for Paris, which is expected to get rain all through the night and into Sunday’s final match. Winds could also play a part in Sunday’s showdown, blowing at speeds of up to 15 mph.

    Who’s hot?

Seattle Mariners: The M’s are no longer the laughing stock of the American League. Seattle has won seven of its last 10 games, including back-to-back wins over the Tampa Bay Rays heading into Saturday’s action. The Mariners outscored the Rays 15-2 over those two contests.

    Who’s not?

Colorado Rockies: Colorado’s recent run has been rocky, losing eight of its last 10 outings heading in Saturday. The Rockies dropped the series opener with the San Francisco Giants Friday, 3-1, which is the ninth time Colorado has failed to score more than three runs in this 10-game span.

Key stat: 30 - The number of 3-pointers Miami attempted in Game 2. That total accounted for more than 40 percent of the Heat's total shots. Miami is shooting 33 percent from beyond the arc in the postseason.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked: Rafael Furcal, Los Angeles Dodgers

While Furcal isn’t striking fear into the hearts of opposing pitchers with his .212 BA and five RBIs, the shortstop is the Dodgers’ leadoff hitter. He injured his side in Friday’s loss to the Cincinnati Reds and will likely be placed on the disabled list. Not only does that force Los Angeles to juggle its lineup, but it’s another hit to its infield, which has been plagued with ailments this season.

Game of the day: French Open Men’s final - Nadal (-250) vs. Federer (+175)

    Betting tips

    - The New York Liberty will be thin up front when they face the Atlanta Dream Sunday. The Liberty suspended Janel McCarville for the season after the 6-foot-2 center failed to report to training camp. McCarville was a big part of the offense, averaging over 11 points and five rebounds in her four seasons in New York. Last year, she scored 8.8 points and pulled in 5.9 boards a game. The Liberty are 7.5-point road underdogs versus the Dream Sunday.

    - Rafael Nadal has Roger Federer’s number, holding a 16-8 head-to-head edge over his rival. Nadal has won three of their last four meetings, including both showdowns this season - 6-3, 6-2 in the Sony Ericsson Open semifinals, and 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 in the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open semis. Nadal also has the advantage in Grand Slam finals, beating Federer in five of their seven matches with a slam title on the line.

    - Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Sunday in Dallas could go a long way toward deciding the NBA champion. When the Mavericks staged an improbable rally for a 95-93 win at Miami Thursday, they evened the series at 1-1 to set up a pivotal Game 3.

Since the NBA installed the 2-3-2 format for the Finals in 1985, the conference champions have previously split the first two games 11 times. In every one of those situations, the team that won Game 3 has gone on to win the series, most recently in last year's Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers, who won Game 3 with the series tied 1-1 versus the Boston Celtics.

    Notable quotable

"We can't turn the ball over against this team. They have two of the most athletic players I've ever seen. We talked about it in the flow of the game that we just can't turn the ball over. Every time we mishandle the ball, it's an automatic lay-up against this team. Sometimes it just happens. They're so good. They have quick hands. They cover a lot of ground. And so turnovers unfortunately are a part of the game." – Dirk Nowitzki, talking about the Mavericks’ 20 turnovers which were turned into 31 points (one-third of Miami's total points) by the Heat in Game 2 of the NBA Finals.

      Sunday's six-pack

-- Pirates drew 39,441 at home Saturday; good for them!!!!

-- Texas-El Paso is playing Stony Brook in its football opener; why?

-- Astros ate a little over $2M by releasing 2B Bill Hall this week.

-- The average Chinese worker earns $7,519 a year.

-- Braves OF Jordan Schafer bunted a ball off his face Friday night and suffered nasal fractures, but isn't going on the DL.

-- If you want to get on the waiting list for Winnipeg Jets' season tix, the website is driveto13.com.

      ********************

Sunday's List of 13: Thinking out loud on a sports Sunday

      13) Winnipeg Jets sold over 13,000 season tickets in less than 72 hours, so now they're charging a $50 deposit and $100 annual fee to be placed on a waiting list for season tickets. I can see why the NHL was so hesitant to put a hockey team back in Manitoba. What imbeciles.

      12) Wouldn't have wanted to be near David Stern Friday; Shaquille O'Neal announced his retirement, Donnie Walsh walked away from the Knicks, two announcements that more than upstaged the ongoing NBA finals, not to mention that Walsh's leaving New York means the Knicks are going to be run by Isiah Thomas (directly or indirectly) which is very bad news for anyone who wants the Knickerbockers to succeed, which Stern does.

      11) Oklahoma basketball coach Lon Kruger is a lifelong Chicago Cub fan who was drafted twice as a baseball player (Astros '70, Cardinals '74).

      10) Damon Green is normally Zach Johnson's caddy on the PGA Tour, but he is playing on the Senior Tour this weekend, +2 after two rounds. He was +4 on Friday, but did better Saturday. he is T62 out of 81 guys in the tournament heading into Sunday's final round.

      9) Oakland pitcher Josh Outman has the perfect name for a pitcher, a lot better than teammate Grant Balfour, or Cincinnati's Homer Bailey.

      8) Speaking of Balfour, A's could've used him this weekend in Boston, but this new paternity leave thing the players have has left the Oakland pen a little shorthanded this weekend. Not good. Rough week for Oakland, 0-5 against the two money teams. They're a sinking ship right now, but at least they'll be getting cigars sometime next week. .

      7) Mets executive Sandy Alderson served eight months in Vietnam War in 1970-71, actually in Vietnam; he rose to rank of Lt Colonel in the Marines and speaks Vietnamese. Being in a war zone might be the only thing that can make working for the nitwit Wilpons seem not so hideous.

      6) Tom Coughlin's foundation raised over $400,000 with his charity golf tournament last week in Jacksonville. Coughlin is an underrated coach-- he isn't Mr Personality, but his foundation does a lot of good work, and he sure has won a lot of football games. That what he gets paid for, no?

      5) Phil Steele's tremendous college football magazine comes out this week; it is a necessity for all of us who follow college ball. One of the things he tracks is returning players. Turns out that Toledo (99.75%) returns most yardage from LY's team, and Iowa (24.6%) returns the least.

      4) A website called Lelands.com has a 1970 flannel Nolan Ryan jersey up for auction; last bid I saw on it was $33,275. Jersey is autographed and is kind of rare, since Ryan wasn't a Met too long. Thats expensive though.

      3) Matthew Goggin leads golf''s minor league, the Nationwide Tour, with earnings of $194,440 this season. Top 25 on the Nationwide money list get a pass onto the 2012 PGA Tour.

      2) The next time Albert Pujols gets walked intentionally with the bases empty and two out in extra innings, remember Saturday, when the Cubs stupidly tried to "pitch carefully" to the great slugger, and he drilled the walk-off HR off his shoetops into the leftfield bullpen. Either challenge him or intentionally walk him. Don't pussyfoot around- thats what the Cubs did Saturday and it cost them the game.

      1) Mets are 6-6 in their last 12 home games; they led in the 7th inning or later in all six losses, the first time that has ever happened in the history of baseball, that a team led that late in six consecutive home losses.

Miami let the Mavericks back into the series, as Dallas outscored them 22-5 in last 6:20 to steal Game 2 and even series. Miami is 4-3 on road in playoffs; their bench was -22 in Game 2, after being +20 in opener; they are shooting 26-83 (31.3%) so far in series and Bosh is just 9-34, so if Miami is going to win on road, they'll need contributions from someone other than James/Wade. Mavs were +11 on boards in Game 2 after being outrebounded by 10 in opener- their bench was 8-20 from floor (4-22 in Game 1)- they survived 18 turnovers by shooting 48%, 11% higher than first game. Dallas is 6-1 at home in playoffs, losing Game 2 to Thunder.

Heat at Mavericks Game 3: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Dallas Mavericks (-2.5, 188.5)

        Series tied 1-1

THE STORY: The NBA Finals has provided a good amount of drama through the first two games. The scene now shifts to Dallas as the Mavericks prepare to host Game 3 Sunday night against the reeling Miami Heat. Dallas rallied from a late deficit with a game-ending 22-5 run that evened the best-of-seven series at a win apiece.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ABC, TSN

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS: Dwyane Wade's corner 3-pointer with just over seven minutes remaining gave the Heat a 15-point lead in Game 2, and the celebrations began immediately. As the Mavericks soon proved, the festivities may have begun a little too early. Jason Terry scored eight quick points during a 15-2 run that trimmed the lead to two points, and Dirk Nowitzki hit three big shots down the stretch - capped by the go-ahead layup with 3.6 seconds left. Nowitzki hit that shot with the same left hand that sported a balky splint thanks to a torn finger tendon. With the momentum squarely in the Mavericks' court, Dallas can seize control of the series with a win Sunday.

ABOUT THE HEAT: LeBron James denied that his team had begun celebrating prematurely after Wade's three-pointer - and subsequent pose - in front of the Dallas bench. Whatever the case, Miami's dynamic duo failed to close out the game, missing four 3-pointers down the stretch while failing to create the same easy baskets that helped them carve out a double-digit lead against the Mavericks. Miami made just one field goal in the last seven minutes, a 3-pointer from Mario Chalmers that tied the game with 24.5 seconds left and set the stage for Nowitzki's game-winning shot. It was Miami's first home loss in the postseason.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: Nowitzki showed no ill effects of the splint on his left hand, scoring 24 points and adding 11 rebounds in the Game 2 victory. Miami F Chris Bosh had a game to forget, shooting just 4 of 16 from the floor and getting beaten badly on Nowitzki's game-winning shot.

KEY STATISTIC: 30 - The number of 3-pointers Miami attempted in Game 2. That total accounted for more than 40 percent of the Heat's total shots.

        TRENDS:

        * Heat are 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings in Dallas.
        * Over is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings.
        * Heat are 7-15-1 ATS in the last 23 meetings.
        * Road team is 20-8-1 ATS in the last 29 meetings.

LAST WORD: "First of all, every team in the league, when they go on a run, they do something, whether it’s a signal, whether it’s a chest bump. It’s a part of the game of basketball. A celebration is confetti, champagne bottles." - Wade, responding to assertions he and James were a little too celebratory following his fourth-quarter 3-pointer

Pick 'n' roll: Sunday's best NBA bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Dallas Mavericks (-2.5, 188.5)

It's hard to imagine the Heat recovering from a collapse of Game 2's magnitude. Maybe in time to save the series. But not in time for Sunday.

Miami, playing at home, led 88-73 with just over six minutes left in the fourth quarter Thursday night. Instead of sealing the deal and taking a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals, Erik Spoelstra's squad watched Dallas end the game on an improbable 22-5 run and steal a stunning 95-93 victory.

LeBron James and everyone else in the Miami camp said all the right things about recovering from the meltdown, but it's easier said than done.

"In the playoffs, it's a win or a loss," James told the Miami Herald. "However it comes by, it's a win or a loss. We've moved on from Game 2; seen the mistakes we've made, seen some of the great things we've done as well. The series is tied 1-1. We never get too high or too low in the series."

It surely won't get any lower than that, but it may not get much better with three games looming at Dallas. The Mavericks are 7-1 at home in the postseason (losing just once to Oklahoma City) and they have covered the spread on six of eight occasions.

"We're coming home, but we know that's no guarantee of anything," cautioned Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle. "We've lost at home this year in the playoffs. Now Miami has as well. The venue has significance, but it never guarantees anyone anything."

Another fourth-quarter performance like what they have been doing all postseason, however, basically would guarantee the Mavericks another victory. Just to name a few, the Mavericks, in addition to Thursday's heroics, mounted a furious rally to tie Game 5 against the Thunder before dominating overtime 11-4. They also won the fourth quarter 28-20 in a clinching Game 6 win.

If Game 3 is another close one, and it should be, look for Dirk Nowitzki and Co. to finish strong and take a 2-1 series lead.

        Pick: Mavericks

Sunday Night Baseball: Braves at Mets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Braves at New York Mets (+123, 7)

The Atlanta Braves play under ESPN’s Sunday night spotlight for the second straight week, though this time they are on the road against the National League East rival New York Mets.

                    NOT TOO PRETTY AT CITI

Heading into Saturday, the Mets (26-31), in the midst of a 4-9 slump overall, are a subpar 13-17 at Citi Field this season. They’ve taken losses in three of their last four home games, including a 6-3 setback to Atlanta in the opener of this three-game weekend series Friday night. And lately, even when the Mets play well enough at home to win, they often find ways to lose.

New York’s last six home losses have all come in games in which it’s led in the seventh inning. In Friday’s tilt, the Mets had a 3-1 lead before giving up five runs over the final two innings.

The Mets are on further home slides of 5-17 against winning teams and 9-19 against right-handed starters, with veteran Braves righty Tim Hudson (4-4, 3.75 ERA) taking the ball Sunday night.

As if that’s not bad enough, R.A. Dickey (2-6, 4.39 ERA) will start for the Mets, who are an imperfect 0-6 at home when the right-hander toes the slab this season. In fact, dating back to last season, New York has dropped eight in a row behind Dickey at Citi Field.

                    ON THE FLIP SIDE…

Atlanta is right at home playing at Citi Field, where it has won four in a row and 13 of 19, heading into Saturday’s action. In addition, Atlanta is 10-2 in the last 12 meetings (6-1 last seven). And with Hudson throwing, the Braves are on surges against the Mets of 5-1 overall and 8-3 in New York.

Atlanta (32-26) is on a few more general streaks, including 9-1 in Game 3 of a series, 5-1 on Sundays, 4-1 on the highway, 4-1 in division play and 14-5 in the NL East with Hudson pitching.

Flying against all those positive numbers, though, the Braves seem to have a little trouble when Hudson faces bad teams. They are 1-4 in the righty’s last five starts overall against losing teams and 0-4 in his last four road starts against sub-.500 squads.

                    HIGHS AND LOWS

When it comes to totals, Atlanta is playing lower-scoring affairs lately, with the under going 11-5-2 in its last 18 games overall and 7-3-1 in its last 11 roadies. The Mets, meanwhile, have been in more runfests, with the over on a 15-5-1 tear in their last 21 tilts overall.

And although Friday’s game went over the posted total of 7.5 runs, in recent meetings within this rivalry, the under has been the pick, going 18-6 in the last 24 clashes overall, 9-3 in the last dozen contests in New York, 7-0 with Hudson facing the Mets and 5-0 with Hudson taking the mound at Citi Field.

                    FEELING CHIPPER

As of Saturday, longtime Atlanta Braves star Chipper Jones has logged 219 games against the New York Mets, with 771 at-bats, and he’s done quite well. Jones, who went 2 for 5 with a solo homer in Friday’s win, has a career .320 BA against the Mets. And of his 247 hits, he’s got 46 home runs and 40 doubles.

He’s also walked 136 times, and he’s driven in 141 runs.

                    BIG-HITTING JOSE

Though his team has struggled at home, Mets leadoff hitter Jose Reyes has been stout at Citi Field. The shortstop is batting a robust .397 in the home uniform (46-for-116), with seven doubles and nine triples

Hot lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colorado Rockies at San Francisco Giants (-120, 7)

The Rockies started out the season on fire, but to say they are struggling to win games right now would be an understatement. Even after eking out a 2-1 victory at San Francisco Saturday, Colorado has still dropped 11 of its last 15 contests.

Don't expect a two-game winning streak after Sunday's visit to the Rockies' NL West rivals. Ryan Vogelsong is getting the ball and he has been borderline unhittable. The 33-year-old righty has given up a mere two earned runs over his last five starts - a span of 31.1 innings.

"All I concentrate on is who is standing in the box, the signs and hitting the glove," Vogelsong told the San Francisco Chronicle last month. "Thinking about anything else, that's mind clutter."

The Giants are 6-3 against Colorado this season and they have still won three of their last four games despite Saturday's narrow loss.

                      Pick: Giants

Tampa Bay Rays at Seattle Mariners (-138, 7)

The Rays' offense has gone stagnant, producing only five runs over the last four games, including just two runs in the first four dates of this current stretch. Not surprisingly, Tampa Bay was in the midst of a three-game losing streak until it pulled out a 3-2 win over the Mariners Saturday.

"We're struggling to score runs right now," veteran Johnny Damon told the team's website. "We're definitely putting a lot more pressure on our pitchers to be perfect out there. There's only been maybe one series all year where we all clicked offensively, and we relied on one guy being hot for certain stretches to help us win those games earlier."

Another win will be hard to come by against an in-form Seattle ballclub Sunday. The Mariners have still won 13 of their last 17 outings despite Saturday's setback. They have stormed to a plus-.500 record (30-28) and are within two games of Texas for the AL West lead.

The home team is sending Erik Bedard to the mound. The veteran southpaw sports a 3.41 ERA for the season and he has made six consecutive quality starts. Bedard has allowed only six earned runs in his last 39.1 innings and he has not surrendered more than two runs in any start since April 20.

                      Pick: Mariners
