Friday’s betting tips: Brewers can’t win in Florida

    Weather to watch:

Milwaukee Brewers at Florida Marlins (-120, 7.5) - Meteorologists currently expect 18 mph winds blowing straight in from center field when the Marlins host the Brewers on Friday evening.

    Who’s hot

MLB: The over is 8-1-1 in Philadelphia’s last 10 games.

MLB: Texas has won nine of its last 11 meetings with the Indians.

MLB: The under is 9-3-1 in San Diego’s last 13 contests.

    Who’s not

MLB: Milwaukee has won just four of its last 16 road games and is 7-23 in the club’s last 30 contests in Florida.

MLB: The White Sox have lost 11 of their last 12 meetings with the Tigers.

MLB: Seattle is 2-8 in its last 10 meetings with Tampa Bay.

    Key stat

91-of-101: Novak Djokovic squares off against Roger Federer on Friday in the French Open semifinals looking for his 42nd consecutive victory this season, which is incredibly impressive. What’s more impressive is that the Serbian has won 91 of a possible 101 sets during his streak. Oddsmakers set Djokovic as a -300 favorite to extend his streak against Federer.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Shane Victorino, Philadelphia Phillies – Victorino will be back in the lineup Friday after going 1-for-3 with a home run in his last rehab game on Wednesday. The outfielder has been on the DL since May 18 with a hamstring injury but was hitting .284 with six homers and 29 runs scored before the injury. Philadelphia was just 8-9 with him on the shelf.

    Game of the day

Texas Rangers at Cleveland Indians (-120, 8)

    Notable quotable

'I've never thought Rafa is unbeatable but you have to play unbelievable tennis for a long period, and that is what Novak has done. Other people have been extending him to the end of sets and that's when doubts creep in, you become a little nervous and you've got a chance.” – Andy Murray on Rafael Nadal ahead of Friday’s semifinal matchup between the pair. Murray is 4-10 lifetime against Nadal and is set as a +375 underdog in this match.

    Notes and tips

New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes came off the bereavement list in time for Thursday’s win over Pittsburgh and was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. Reyes, who continues to hear his name in trade rumors, missed a few games to attend his paternal grandmother’s funeral. He’s riding a seven-game hit streak, picking up at least two hits in six of those games.

Rory McIlroy burned through the back nine of the first round of the Memorial to catch leader Chris Riley at six-under for a share of the lead. McIlroy converted seven birdies, including four outside of 14 feet. "I have been hitting the ball really well but the difference was today I kept myself in it with a few good up-and-downs on the back nine and just kept myself in there and it was nice to birdie a few holes coming in to shoot a 66," he told reporters. McIlroy went into the tournament priced around +2200.

Vancouver Canucks forward Alex Burrows escaped punishment from the NHL after he allegedly bit Patrice Bergeron’s finger in a scrum at the end of the first period of Vancouver’s Game 1 win. However, Vancouver could be without defenseman Dan Hamhuis after he picked up a lower-body injury on Wednesday. The Bruins look to even the series Saturday in Vancouver as a big +170 underdog.

      Friday's six-pack

-- So I'm guessing the next Marlins-Giants series (Aug 12-14 in Miami) might be worth paying attention to. Will be fun to see which umpiring crew they assign to it, since tensions will be high. .

-- Padres are 13-4 this season when they score first, but they've scored first in only 17 of their 57 games.

-- If someone asks you who has the longest current hitting streak in the major leagues, stun them by being right-- Ryan Theriot (16 games).

-- Pirates snatched defeat from the jaws of victory Thursday, losing 9-8 at Citi Field after they led 7-0 in the third. Big win for Terry Collins.

-- Rays are 6-11 in last 17 games, 0-7 in game following their last seven wins, after they got waxed 8-2 in Seattle.

-- Mavericks outscored Miami 22-5 over the last 6:20 and stunned the Heat 95-93. Dirk Nowitzki scored the last nine Dallas points. Series is now a game apiece heading to Dallas for Game 3.

      ***********************

Friday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind........

      13) What were the odds that the first 8-game winner in the major leagues this season (Kevin Correia) would be a Pirate? Seven of his eight wins have come on the road, which is even more unusual.

      12) Remember Loyola Marymount’s great run to the finals of NCAA's West Regional in the 1990 tournament, after LMU's star (Hank Gathers) died during a game in the WCC tournament? One of the players on Portland in the game where Gathers collapsed/died was a point guard named Erik Spoelstra, the Miami Heat's coach.

      11) When Spoelstra was a high school point guard, he used his dad’s connections (executive with Trailblazers) to wangle an invite to the Nike summer camp in New Jersey. One of his teammates at the Nike camp was a future Miami Heat star, Alonzo Mourning. He wound up coaching Mourning with the Heat.

      10) Surprised to read that Arizona State hoop coach Herb Sendek might be looking to move on from ASU; he’s in an uphill struggle against his friend Sean Miller for in-state basketball prominence. Would Sendek be a good fit at Penn State?

      9) OPS for Red Sox’ DHs this season: .949. For Bronx Bombers’ DHs: .621. At some point before July 31, Bronx will make a move to upgrade at DH and will probably also add at least one starting pitcher.

      8) When you see that Florida made a profit of $44,258,193 on its football team LY, or that Penn State made $50,427,645 on theirs, then you realize why winning is so important. The rest of the Florida athletic department lost just under $16M LY. Football subsidizes the entire department.

      7) Ohio State's football team made a profit of $39,623,730 LY; Ohio U’s football team made $82,414.

Information on the Ohio State budget comes from a terrific website that I found this week: businessofcollegesports.com

      6) Revenue from football makes up 73% of all revenue into the Buckeyes’ athletic program.

      5) Ohio State got $10,700,000 in revenue just from TV LY. They got $11,870,500 in season ticket sales.

      4) Only two sports at Ohio State turn a profit; football and men’s basketball. But football's profit swallows up all the deficits.

      3) Weird that Penn State’s basketball program made a lot more money ($4,237,191) than Florida’s ($2,275,475) did. Nittany Lions are having the hardest time finding an established coach who wants their job.

      2) There are seven colleges where the money collected from student fees makes up over half the school’s athletic budget, with Florida International getting 71% of its budget from its students.

      1) FIU didn’t turn a profit in any sport, losing $7,451,432 on its athletic department. Maybe they should hire a real basketball coach instead of Isiah Thomas,

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday’s steaking and slumping starting pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Streaking

Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies (7-2, 3.01)

Hamels has won each of his last three starts, booking a 2.57 ERA with 22 strikeouts over that span. He’s been a goldmine for Phillies bettors too, with Philadelphia winning nine of his last 10 starts.

The lefty had it all working for him in his last outing when his struck out a season-high 10 batters over seven innings in a win over the Mets.

He’s pegged around -155 for Friday’s matchup with the Pirates.

Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angels (6-4, 2.10 ERA)

At some point, the Angels are going to have to give Weaver a little run support. He has a sparkling 1.64 ERA over his last three and doesn’t have a win to show for it (L.A. is 1-2 in those games).

The big right-hander has given up more than three runs just twice this season but hasn’t won a game in his last six outings.

That’s because Los Angeles averages just 2.7 runs in his starts this season.

              Slumping

Bronson Arroyo, Cincinnati Reds (3-5, 5.74 ERA)

Arroyo is going through one of his rough spells again, posting a fat 13.50 ERA over his last three outings. He has struck out just six batters during the skid and is now winless in his last six trips to the hill.

You’d like to think he’s battling through some sort of injury or a delivery problem, but the truth is he’s just getting lit up.

"Physically, I felt as good as I have all year, by far," Arroyo told reporters. "... It's just a mixture of command and getting hit on some pitches and the ball not rolling your way."

Yuneski Maya, Washington Nationals (0-0, 7.71, ERA)

It’s hard to pick on a guy that has just one start under his belt, but somebody’s got to go in this spot.

Maya lasted just 4 2/3 innings in his only outing of the year, giving up four earned runs on six hits while striking out three and walking two. The kicker: That start was against the impotent San Diego Padres.

This will be Maya’s seventh career start and he’s set as a +165 underdog on the road against Arizona.

Hot lines: Friday’s best MLB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Braves at New York Mets (-125, 7.5)

The New York Mets managed to earn a split in their four-game set with the Pittsburgh Pirates and pulled off their biggest comeback since 2000 by rallying from a seven-run deficit on Thursday, but let’s not get carried away – this club is still a mess.

Owner Fred Wilpon dragged his superstars through the mud via The New Yorker and is now doing his best to make nice, but the rumors persist. Earlier this week there was more talk that David Wright and/or Jose Reyes could be on the move.

Lefty Jon Niese hopes to give the Mets a boost and his numbers have been great lately. He has allowed just two runs over his last three starts and has struck out at least five in each of those outings.

Still, we like the road value here with Atlanta. Derek Lowe usually bounces back well after a rough outing and the Braves have won 21 of the last 29 meetings between the two clubs.

                Pick: Braves

Los Angeles Dodgers at Cincinnati Reds (-135, 8.5)

The Cincinnati Reds have been looking for a breakthrough for a while. Jay Bruce has done his best to keep the team afloat with a terrific month of May, but he needs some help.

Maybe Wednesday’s win was what the club needed to get them going. Bruce and Joey Votto hit two-run dingers late to give Cincinnati a 4-3 win over Milwaukee.

“That was sweet,” Dusty Baker said. “We finally won the series, that rubber game that’s been eluding us. Hopefully, we’ll take this day off and enjoy it. This 20-game run has been up and down, emotional swings, mostly down. That was some victory, a big sigh of relief.”

It’s tempting to go back to the well with the Reds again, but they’ll probably need some serious help from their relievers with Bronson Arroyo on the mound.

                The over looks safer.

                Pick: Over

Glad to do it! It's kinda nice to have all this gathered up in one place. The stuff is from many, many different sites and this thread saves a whole lot of jumpin around.

I just realized that WNBA starts up tonight. I'll see what's available.

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WNBA betting preview: Three teams to follow, three to fade
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can question the quality of basketball in the WNBA, but what you can’t question is the league’s potential to make you money as a sports bettor.

No professional league, with the exception of maybe the Arena Football League, has lines that are as routinely beatable as the WNBA.

Bookmakers pay little attention to the WNBA and are far more likely to spend their time on the NBA playoffs, Major League Baseball and the upcoming NFL and college football seasons.

Knowing this, sharp bettors often make a killing betting WNBA in the summer months. They try to exploit bad lines that offer maximum value.

With the WNBA season just getting started, here is a look at three teams to fade and three to follow.

                          FADE

                          Seattle Storm

In the WNBA, perception is everything.

The Storm won last year’s championship, which means there’s a good chance they will be an overvalued team with inflated lines that they’ll struggle to cover in 2011.

Since 2003, no team has had a winning ATS record the season after winning the title. Teams are a combined 119-151 ATS in the follow-up season, with four of them finishing 14-19 ATS or worse.

The Storm are favored to repeat, but that shouldn’t stop you from fading them to profits along the way.

                          Tulsa Shock

Only two teams in WNBA history have had consecutive single-digit win seasons, the former Utah Starzz (1997 and 1998) and the San Antonio Silver Stars (2004 and 2005).

Tulsa is about to make it three.

After posting a 6-28 record in 2010, the Shock needed to completely revamp their roster. However, they made only marginal improvements that won’t necessarily translate to more wins.

The Shock went 12-22 ATS last year and were outscored by an average of 11.8 points per game. Expect much of the same in 2011.

                          Chicago Sky

New coach Pokey Chatman has an impressive resume, having led LSU to three straight Final Fours from 2003 to 2006. But that doesn’t mean she’ll turn the Sky into an instant winner.

The Sky went 18-15-1 ATS despite having a losing record in 2010. With a new coach and system in place, 2011 figures to be a transition year. Expect the slightly overvalued Sky to be a sub-.500 team with a losing ATS record.

                          FOLLOW

                          Minnesota Lynx

The Lynx drafted UConn star Maya Moore, and as we’ve seen before, adding former Huskies can do wonders for a struggling WNBA team.

Sue Bird helped the Storm improve from 10-22 to 17-15 and a playoff berth in her rookie season in 2002. Diana Taurasi helped the Phoenix Mercury make a nine-win improvement in her rookie campaign in 2004. And last year, Tina Charles helped the Connecticut Sun make a one-game improvement.

Moore is a lock for Rookie of the Year honors and will be so good, so soon that she should have the Lynx in the playoff mix by season’s end.

                          Atlanta Dream

Seattle is the league’s best team, but Atlanta isn’t far behind.

Though the Dream were swept by the Storm in last year’s WNBA Finals, they only lost the three games by a combined eight points.

This year’s team has a strong chance to improve on last year’s 19-15 record and they can do it without the added pressure of having to defend a title. But it starts with defense. The Dream didn’t play any last season, allowing 83.1 points per game.

                          Los Angeles Sparks

With Candace Parker back in the lineup after suffering a season-ending shoulder injury last year, the Sparks have a chance to make the league’s biggest turnaround in 2011.

The Sparks went 13-21 (12-20-2 ATS) in 2010, but grew as a team without their star. Now that Parker is back, the Sparks should compete with the Storm for the top spot in the Western Conference.
