Wednesday’s betting tips: Big move in Canucks’ odds

    Who’s hot

NHL: Boston has won seven of its last 10 meetings with the Canucks.

MLB: The Mets have won 18 of their last 24 meetings with Pittsburgh in the Big Apple.

MLB: Seattle has won 10 of its last 12.

    Who’s not

NHL: The over is 5-15-1 in Vancouver’s last 21 home games.

MLB: Milwaukee is 9-18 on the road this season.

MLB: Texas is just 2-7 in its last nine games on astroturf.

    Key stat

52 – The Boston Bruins have had no trouble scoring at even strength in the playoffs, with 52 of their 58 goals coming when playing all-even. The downside to that is that their power play has converted just five times in 61 chances (just under 10 percent).

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Manny Malhotra, Vancouver Canucks - The Canucks top faceoff man and one of the club’s best penalty killer may not be in the lineup for Game 1 after all. Malhotra suffered a serious eye injury and March and hasn’t played since, but had been practicing with the team for the last while and there was talk he had been cleared to play. Well, maybe not. Malhotra didn’t practice Tuesday and is now doubtful for Game 1 after he wasn’t made available for interviews.

    Game of the day

Boston Bruins at Vancouver Canucks (-205, 5.5) – Vancouver was originally set around -180 before Canucks bettors weighed in to shift the line to as high as -210 at some books.

    Notable quotable

"Win this tournament again? No, seriously, I am not confident. The thing is you have to be realist, and today I'm not playing well enough to win this tournament. We will see after tomorrow if I am ready to play at this level. I'm going to try. But I won five times already here. I don't have an obligation to win six." Spaniard Rafael Nadal said after advancing to the French Open semifinals against Robin Soderling. Nadal is pegged at -355.

    Notes and tips

The Kansas City Royals are removing Joakim Soria from the closing role at least until he can get his game together. Soria gave up three runs in the ninth inning in Monday’s 10-8 to the Los Angeles Angels and stepped up to take the blame afterward. "I went to his office and told him it's the right time to do it," Soria told reporters. "I don't want to be (the reason for) this losing streak. The team is playing really well, and they need a man who can go after (the other team). Right now, that's not (me)." Rookie Aaron Crow (2-0, 1.33 ERA) will slide into the closing role for the time being.

Despite an ankle injury, a two-set deficit and a match that stretched over two days, Andy Murray came back to earn a berth into the French Open quarterfinals with a win over Victor Troicki. Murray, who looked lost through the first two sets, somehow pulled it together to when the final five games of the fifth set. Murray is set around -830 against Juan Ignacio Chela in the quarterfinals and is currently set around +1200 to win the tournament.

      Wednesday's six-pack

-- Not only did Miami beat Dallas in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, but Dirk Nowitzki tore a tendon in the middle finger of his left hand, which is his non-shooting hand, so he'll still play, but with a splint.

-- NBA Finals are being broadcast in 46 different languages.

-- Tuesday night's game was the first NBA Finals game played in May since a Boston-Houston game 25 years ago.

-- Florida hoop coach Billy Donovan suggested the SEC tournament should be seeded in order of the teams' RPI. An interesting idea.

-- Memphis Tigers signed former NBA guard Damon Stoudamire away his job as an NBA assistant; he should be an excellent recruiter for the Tigers. Stoudamire and Josh Pastner both played in college at Arizona.

-- World Series of Poker started Tuesday in Las Vegas; six weeks full of tournaments, with the Main Event starting around July 7th.

      Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week stuff.......

      13) As an A’s fan, it bugs the hell out of me that on a team that stinks offensively, the same guy bats 2nd every game; Daric Barton, who is batting .211, has batted in the 2nd position for 217 out of his 222 plate appearances this season. Barton is a very good defensive 1B, and he gets enough walks to merit his being a regular, but why not shuffle the lineup once in a while, since this team has so much trouble scoring runs?

      12) In other words, just because Coco Crisp can run fast, it doesn’t mean he has to bat leadoff. He’s probably a better hitter than Barton; maybe Barton, who draws a lot of walks, should bat leadoff and Crisp 2nd? Shouldn’t they at least try this? What could it possibly hurt, after they made Bartolo Colon look like Greg Maddux Monday.

      11) Oh by the way, Tampa Bay batted Evan Longoria leadoff over the weekend because he was struggling with the bat. Sometimes if you try new things, you can learn something.

      10) I’m tired of hearing about Buster Posey’s ankle, but bottom line is this; he blocked the plate, is now lost for the year and the run scored on that play anyway. The new thing has to be having catchers use sweep tags, unless you don’t care if they get hurt or not. To win over a 6-month season, you must avoid injuries as much as humanly possible, especially at positions where the talent is spread so thin.

      9) There have been six games this season where the starting pitcher threw 42+ pitches in the first inning; this is very bad. In three of the six games, that pitcher pitched for the Reds.

      8) The grandson of former Red Sox star Carl Yastrzemski plays baseball for Vanderbilt, one of the better teams in the country.

      7) Cris Collinsworth is so sure the NFL isn’t starting on time this season, he’s taken a job as a WR coach at Highland HS. That’s not good news.

      6) Applications to go to college at Auburn are up 20% since the football team won the national championship in January. Wonder if applications go down when a team goes on probation.

      5) Game 7 of the Tampa Bay-Boston series didn’t have any penalties, not one, part of why it was so low scoring; everyone was terrified to make any mistake at all. NHL playoffs are by far the best of any pro sport, and its not close.

      4) With Thrashers moving to Winnipeg, shouldn’t the NHL re-align for next season? Or is it too late for this year? Being in same division as Carolina-Florida-Tampa Bay-Washington could make for some long road trips, coming from Manitoba.

      3) Speaking of Winnipeg, ESPN’s Barry Melrose assisted on first NHL goal the old Winnipeg Jets ever scored. Jets played in the WHA for eight years before joining the NHL in 1979- they moved to Phoenix in 1996. Melrose was a pretty good defenseman in his day.

      2) One of the reasons fantasy sports are so much fun is that when you lose, its actually your fault, as opposed to yelling at someone on TV for not doing better. I used to be in an NBA fantasy keeper league; I kept a guy named Milos Vujanic on my roster for two full years, even though Vujanic never played in an NBA game.

He was drafted by the Knicks, and even traded to Phoenix later on, but he never ventured across the ocean to actually play here. I had read where he was this terrific point guard, which he may well have been, since he won a gold medal in the 2002 Olympics. But he never played in the NBA.

      1) Which brings me to Brian Cashman, who brought in Pedro Feliciano and Rafael Soriano to fortify the Bronx bullpen this year. Feliciano never pitched this year, and Soriano hardly pitched and rarely well. Cashman is a fine GM most days, but Feliciano/Soriano wasn't his finest moment.

Bruins won 3-1 in Vancouver Feb 26, near end of awesome 6-0 road trip, but Canucks won Presidents' Cup, are hungry for first-ever Stanley Cup title (Bruins last won in '72). Vancouver won its last series in five games, is 7-3 at home in playoffs. Bruins won last series in seven games, but its been five days since they played so fatigue isn't a factor. Boston is 5-3 on road in playoffs; two of their three series wins were in seven games. Canucks are 17-60 on power play in playoffs; Bruins are a dismal 5-61.

Bruins at Canucks Game 1: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Vancouver Canucks (-194, 5.5)

        THE STORY
: Rested or rusty? That's the question the Vancouver Canucks face as they prepare for Wednesday's opening game of the Stanley Cup final against the visiting Boston Bruins. Vancouver enjoyed a week off to rest up after polishing off the San Jose Sharks in five games. The Bruins didn't have the same luxury, needing seven games to eliminate Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference final.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, RDS

ABOUT THE CANUCKS: Vancouver punched its ticket to the Stanley Cup final for the first time since 1994 with a dominant performance against a Sharks team that simply ran out of gas. The Canucks will have a full crew available for the final, highlighted by the unbelievable return of forward Manny Malhotra. He suffered a serious eye injury near the end of the regular season and it wasn't immediately known whether he would even be able to retain his vision. Two surgeries, the faceoff specialist has practiced with the team and was cleared by doctors to participate in the Stanley Cup final. He's expected to be in uniform for Game 1.

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Few have the Bruins favored to walk out of the series with their first Stanley Cup since 1972. Boston needed seven games to eliminate the Lightning, and now must face the team that finished atop the NHL standings while leading the league in most goals scored and fewest goals against. Bruins head coach Claude Julien summarized his opponents in brief: "There is a lot of skill, there is a lot of speed." Boston will be led by the scoring exploits of David Krejci and Nathan Horton, who lead the team with 17 points in the postseason. Vezina Trophy candidate Tim Thomas has also enjoyed a solid playoff run.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: Defending Hart Trophy winner Henrik Sedin leads the Canucks with 19 assists and 21 points, and has been especially dangerous on the power-play with 10 man-advantage points. Bruins F Michael Ryder has just five goals so far in the postseason, and will need to step up to help Boston counter a relentless Vancouver attack.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Vancouver enjoyed a decided edge in power-play effectiveness, converting on 28.3 percent of its man-advantage opportunities. Boston has scored on just 8.2 percent of its power plays. The teams are more evenly matched on the penalty kill, with the Canucks at 80.6 percent and the Bruins at 79.4.

SEASON SERIES: The teams met just once in the regular season. Milan Lucic scored the game winner with 4:38 remaining and Tim Thomas made 27 saves as the Bruins earned a 3-1 home victory on Feb. 26.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 3-0-1 in the last four meetings.
        * Bruins are 4-1 in the last five meetings in Vancouver.
        * Bruins are 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.

LAST WORD: "We’ve got a lot of talent, a lot of guys who can do different things for us. It doesn’t mean anything if you don’t use it, but we’re definitely eager to get started." - Canucks defenseman Christian Ehrhoff.

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bet
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Vancouver Canucks (-194, 5.5)

No Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup since way back in 1993 when the Montreal Canadiens lifted the most prized piece of hardware in sports. The Vancouver Canucks looked like a team that could end that drought right from the beginning of this season and now they are just four wins away.

Vancouver blew away the field in the regular season, finishing with 117 points—12 ahead of Western Conference No. 2 seed San Jose and 10 clear of Washington. Aside from a three-game hiccup against Chicago before winning Game 7 in Round 1, the squad has been pretty dominant in the playoffs.

Perhaps the best news for Canucks’ fans is that their boys have only been getting better and better. They survived Chicago in seven games, took care of Nashville in six, and raced past San Jose in five.

Roberto Luongo may steal a lot of headlines, but a big reason for Vancouver’s surge is an explosive offense. It has produced at least three goals in five straight games and eight of nine. Ryan Kesler and the Sedin twins (Daniel and Henrik) have been almost impossible to stop. Henrik is leading the way with 21 playoff points, Kesler has 18, and Daniel has contributed 16.

“For me, it’s satisfying to help the team win, to do what I’ve done so far,” Kesler told the Boston Globe. “I don’t think satisfying is the right word. I’m happy where we are now, but I’m going to be even happier after this round.”

That is, he’ll be happier if the Canucks take care of business and win the Stanley Cup. They should have a good chance if their power play keeps clicking. Vancouver had the best conversion percentage during the regular season and it has capitalized on 17 of 60 chances during the playoffs (28.3 percent).

Boston, on the other hand, is just five for 61 on power plays in the postseason (8.2 percent). The Bruins will have to improve on that number if they want to find success in Game 1, but they will hard-pressed to do so against an in-form Luongo.

Vancouver has been up-and-down at home of late throughout the playoffs while Boston had been up-and-down on the road. However, the Canucks won all three at home against San Jose and the Bruins dropped their last two at Tampa Bay, giving up a combined 10 goals in those two contests.

        Pick: Canucks

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Rangers at Tampa Bay Rays (-155, 7.5)

You knew it was only a matter of time before David Price found his groove. Well, maybe it's time to call off the search committee.

After allowing five runs with nine strikeouts combined over two starts, Price rebounded to blank the powerful Cleveland over seven innings while whiffing a career-high 12 batters. The big lefty gave up just four hits and walked two in a 110-pitch effort.

However, Price has had his problems against Texas with a 0-2 record and a fat 7.45 ERA in four career starts.

“Pitching against Texas has been tough for me throughout my short career. I don’t enjoy not having success against certain teams. It makes it tougher for me, so whenever I get that first one against Texas—hopefully it’ll come on Wednesday—it just makes it a little bit better.”

We took a long look at the under, but it’s about time Price snaps out of this slump against Texas.

                Pick: Rays

New York Yankees at Oakland Athletics (-130, 7.5)

One thought jumps to mind when you see the Yanks set as a +110 underdog in a situation like this: A.J. Burnett has to be starting.

Sure enough, the right-handed enigma is climbing the hill Tuesday. The season started off well enough for Burnett as he won his first three starts after a terrible 2010 campaign. But he has just three wins since then as control problems have become an issue again.

Still, there’s hope for a bit of guarded optimism. Burnett has given up just five runs over his last two starts, and has managed to pitch around eight combined walks over those two outings.

Maybe we’re playing with fire here against Gio Gonzalez getting the ball for the A’s, but we’ll take a shot with the Yanks and their offense that’s putting up 5.17 runs per game (best in the show), at this price.

                Pick: Yankees

                    Wednesday, June 1

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Capping the calendar: June's best and worst pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a 2-to-1 or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of June. On the flip side, we’ve also listed pitchers that struggle in June team starts, winning 33 percent or less of their efforts.

To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts with at least one start each June over the last three years.

                    Good June pitchers

                    Gavin Floyd • 13-5

The White Sox right hander is rock-solid, middle-of-the-rotation hurler, who is on pace to break previous career lows in ERA, WHIP and batting average allowed. If Chicago can start to score runs, Floyd should produce another super June.

                    Felix Hernandez • 11-3

When doesn’t King Felix pitch well, especially considering some of the teams he’s played for? Hernandez can be expected to match previous Junes since he’s really gotten the feel for his changeup, which he’s used increasingly more as an out-pitch to compliment his other filthy stuff.

                    Scott Kazmir • 8-4

The Angels left hander is attempting to return from back problems and his most recent rehab start in Triple-A did not go well (24 strikes in 50 pitches), allowing six earned runs. Kazmir is a shadow of the pitcher he was at Tampa Bay.

                    Kyle Kendrick • 7-3

Now a relief pitcher for Philadelphia because of their strong starting staff, Kendrick has been a spot starter on two occasions this season with mixed results.

                    John Lackey • 12-4

The Red Sox hurler went on the DL on May 12 with a right elbow strain. Lackey’s been throwing bullpen sessions and was tentatively scheduled for minor league rehab start on May 31. If that goes well, the former Angels chucker could be recalled as soon as June 5. Lackey is another pitcher who’s lost velocity on his breaking pitches.

                    Cliff Lee • 12-5

The Phillies lefty has been a little off this season, mostly because he’s on target to permit the most walks since 2004 when he was still in Cleveland. Maybe the warmer temperatures will get Lee back on his game and lead Philadelphia to more victories.

                    Jon Lester • 11-4

He’s is one of the finest pitchers in baseball from May thru September and dependable as they come. Lester has the classic left-hander delivery, likes to establish Strike 1 with all hitters and prefers to cut his low to mid-90’s fastball to right hand hitters and build around it.

                    Ted Lilly • 12-6

After a deplorable start, Lilly has lowered his ERA more than a run and half. Make sure to watch what time of day the Dodger port-sider is pitching, since he has huge disparity (6.33 ERA in day games and 2.97 at night).

                    Tim Lincecum • 12-5

Because San Francisco can’t score, Lincecum’s record does not reflect how well he’s thrown. “The Freak” coasts in low the 90’s with fastball, has an improved power slider and Lincecum’s throwing motion on his change-up is virtually indiscernible.

                    Ricky Nolasco • 11-5

The Florida starter has a sound repeatable delivery and throws a few different fastballs that match almost perfectly with a tightly-spun curveball that he will throw on any count. Watch for Nolasco on the road since he and Marlins mates are 15-4 when he toes the rubber and 11-2 away from home when the moneyline is between +125 to -125 the last two seasons.

                    C.C. Sabathia • 11-4

In the same mold as Lester, manager Joe Girardi knows what he’s getting from his big southpaw game in game out. Once again, Sabathia is a nightmare to left-handed batters, who are hitting just .197 against him.

                    Tim Wakefield • 10-5

With all the injuries to Boston’s starting pitchers, the old knuckleballer is there to give skipper Terry Francona a reliable fifth starter when called upon. To date, Wakefield is conceding his lowest batting average allowed in three years.

                    Jered Weaver • 10-5

It’s been a crazy campaign for the Anaheim ace, being the first pitcher since 1884 (that’s correct 127 years ago) to start the year with six straight wins and lose the next four times. With any run support, Weaver should return to winning ways this month.

                    Bad June pitchers

                    Joe Blanton • 5-11

The Phillies fifth starter is on the DL for a second time this season with his right elbow. Blanton is prohibited from throwing until at least June 10 and his exact return is uncertain.

                    Jon Garland • 5-11

Garland is strictly a back-of-the-rotation starter at this point of his career. He’s on pace to surrender a .270 or higher batting average allowed for the fifth time in the past six seasons.

                    Tim Hudson • 4-8

Back stiffness bothered Hudson again at the end May, however, this was expected to be a temporary setback. Has pitched more to contact this season with strikeouts down and prefers Turner Field (3.10 ERA) to the road (5.33).
