MLB Betting: Reds and Braves close series

Two clubs with different strengths will clash on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball as the Cincinnati Reds are in Atlanta to finish off their series against the Braves. The action will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 5:00 p.m. (PT).

These two National League teams are riding right around the same area in the standings and will look to crawl up a bit higher against each other.

Impressive numbers are easy to find for both sides, but they are almost complete opposites.

The Cincinnati Reds are in the top-5 or top-10 of seemingly every offensive statistical category in all of baseball. It almost becomes too much to mention, but here’s the list: batting average, slugging percentage, on base percentage, RBIs, homeruns, hits and runs.

A few players are hitting over .300 including Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips who also have 29 RBIs apiece. Jay Bruce is cruising just under .300 and has knocked 14 out of the park while recording 39 RBIs.

Atlanta’s offensive stats are nowhere near as impressive. However, Cincinnati also has a weakness and that is where the Braves shine.

Jair Jurrjens (6-1, 1.56 ERA) gets the nod for Atlanta and not only are his numbers incredible, but the Braves’ pitching staff as a whole are as well. ERA, strikeouts, home runs against and hits are all categories in which they are top-5 or better.

As for Jurrjens himself, his record and ERA are good enough to show the kind of season he is having along with a WHIP of 1.02. Since Atlanta is at home, however, take a look at those stats just for fun. Jurrjens is 3-0 with a .182 on-base percentage and a ridiculous WHIP of 0.64 at Turner Field this season.

While the Reds are at the bottom of many team pitching statistics, their starter for Sunday has come out of the gate nicely. Johnny Cueto (2-1, 2.19 ERA) returned from a shoulder injury on May 8 against the Chicago Cubs where he tallied his first win of the season. In his one loss so far, he gave up just three runs although he only pitched five innings.

To continue the theme of opposites, the ‘under’ is 9-2 in the Braves last 11 games while the ‘over’ is 5-1 in the Reds last six. The one game that went under for Cincinnati in that stretch was the first game of this series which the Reds won, 5-1.

It should be a good night for baseball in Atlanta as the forecast looks to be partly cloudy with just an eight percent chance of rain. The ballpark will be 85 degrees and cool down to about 75.

MLB Odds: Red-hot Sox finish set at Detroit

The Boston Red Sox are heating up with the weather as they conclude a 4-game series Sunday at the Detroit Tigers.

The Red Sox (29-22) have won four-straight and 12-of-14, pending Saturday night’s final. They lead the AL East by a game over the Yankees after a dreadful start.

Sunday’s action will get underway from Detroit’s Comerica Park at 10:05 a.m. (PT). This is a fantastic pitching matchup with Boston’s Josh Beckett (4-1, 1.69 ERA) facing Justin Verlander (4-3, 3.42 ERA).

Boston has won the first two game of this series (14-1, 6-3) behind back-end starters Alfredo Aceves and Tim Wakefield. They’re only in the rotation due to injuries to John Lackey and Daisuke Matsuzaka, neither of whom will be rushed back.

Pitching for Boston has been easy lately. The bats have exploded with 34 runs the last three games. The team easily leads MLB in scoring in May (5.68 runs per game).

Beckett leads AL starters in ERA, but hasn’t been the beneficiary of the team’s offensive barrage. Boston has scored just 3.6 runs per game in his starts, 5.20 for everyone else.

The 31-year-old right-hander is finally healthy after a miserable 2010 (5.78 ERA). Boston has won his last four starts, although he’s gotten just two decisions. His May ERA (.60) is one of the best months on record for a Sox hurler.

Beckett faced Detroit two starts ago at home, allowing one run over six innings in a 4-3 victory. He hasn’t visited Detroit since 2009, throwing 7 2/3 shutout innings. He’s 2-0 with a 0.61 ERA in two lifetime starts at Comerica.

The ‘under’ is 8-1-1 for Beckett this season, ‘pushing’ the seven-runs in the Detroit contest.

The Tigers (25-25) have been extremely streaky this season, ripping off several wins in a row and then losing a bunch. They sit 6-games behind surprising Cleveland (30-18) in the AL Central, but that’s good for second place with Chicago (24-29) and Minnesota (16-33) badly underachieving.

Detroit’s ERA (4.36) ranks 11th in the AL, with the starters (3.84) compensating some for an awful bullpen (5.58).

Verlander leads Detroit’s starters in ERA, but he’s been somewhat snake-bitten like Beckett. Detroit has scored three runs or less in seven of his 11 starts, going 5-6 overall.

The 28-year-old ace had his worst start of the season last Tuesday hosting Tampa Bay. He surrendered six runs over six innings, but got a no-decision in a 7-6 win thanks to a late rally. The right-hander hadn’t allowed more than three earned runs in his first 10 starts, going at least six innings each time.

Verlander opposed Beckett in Boston on May 19 in the 4-3 loss. He lasted eight innings and was responsible for three of the runs. He’s 2-2 with a 3.80 ERA in six lifetime starts against Boston. Only one of those games came at home though (back in 2008).

Boston has won its last six games against Detroit, going 4-0 this season. It also took the short two-game set at home back in mid-May.

Detroit is 13-10 at home this year, winning the first two on this homestand against Tampa Bay before dropping the two to Boston.

Boston is 13-12 away, but 7-1 in the last eight after starting the season 6-11.

Alan Porter will call balls and strikes. The road team is 5-0 in his last five games behind home plate. The ‘under’ is 5-1 in his last six behind the dish.

Boston’s J.D. Drew (hamstring) was listed as doubtful for Saturday while Detroit’s Magglio Ordoñez (ankle) and Carlos Guillen (knee) are both still on the DL.

Weather will be in the 70s with scattered thunderstorms. Boston will return home on Monday’s Memorial Day to face the White Sox, while Detroit continues its homestand against Minnesota

      Sunday Tips

      May 28, 2011

The Memorial Day weekend of baseball continues on Sunday as teams continue to push forward in their respective division races with May wrapping up. The Reds and Braves finish off the night at Turner Field as both teams look to end cold stretches, while the Mariners try for a series victory over the Yankees. We'll start in Southern California as the Dodgers attempt to fix their broken season against Florida.

Marlins at Dodgers - 4:10 PM EST

The Fish started their West Coast swing with a bang as Florida swept San Francisco, but the Marlins got tripped up on Friday night with a 3-2 walk-off loss to the Dodgers. Los Angeles owns a 4-9 record since a three-game winning streak in the mid-May, while Florida is within arms-length of Philadelphia in the tight NL East race.

Clayton Kershaw (5-3, 2.96 ERA) is coming off a no-decision in his last start at Houston, a 4-3 defeat. The Astros rallied for three runs in the ninth inning off the Los Angeles bullpen, wasting a six-inning effort from the southpaw in which he allowed one earned run and four hits. The Dodgers are 4-2 in Kershaw's six home starts this season, as he looks to rebound from a road favorite loss to the Marlins in late April.

The Marlins send out Southern California native Ricky Nolasco (4-0, 3.04 ERA), who silenced the Giants' bats his last time out in a 5-1 road underdog victory. Nolasco tossed 8.1 innings for his sixth quality outing in the previous seven starts, while improving to 4-0 on the highway. Interestingly, the right-hander's last home win came against the Dodgers on April 25, a 5-4 triumph as a $1.40 favorite.

Yankees at Mariners - 4:10 PM EST

New York's trip out west lasts nine games as the first series concludes at Safeco Field against the surprising Mariners. The Bombers squandered a 3-0 lead in Friday's 4-3 defeat to Seattle, just the third loss in 10 games for Joe Girardi's club since a six-game skid. The Yankees send out their ace in the finale as New York attempts to stay close to Boston in the AL East.

CC Sabathia (5-3, 3.17 ERA) put together his first complete game of the season as the Yankees rallied past the Blue Jays, 5-4 this past Tuesday. The former Cy Young Award winner has alternated quality starts in each of his previous six outings, as the Yankees are 4-0 in his last four trips to the mound off a non-quality start. Sabathia has owned the Mariners since signing with the Yankees in 2009 by compiling a 5-1 record, including dominating run-line victories at Safeco Field.

The Mariners send out a lefty of their own with Jason Vargas (3-2, 3.86 ERA), as Seattle has on four of his last five starts. Vargas had allowed one earned run in three starts prior to giving up five earned runs in an extra-innings win at Minnesota, the third road victory by the M's this season when the southpaw starts. The Yankees went 2-0 last season against Vargas, including a 3-1 road win by the Bombers as a $1.45 road 'chalk' last July.

Reds at Braves - 8:00 PM EST

Both these teams made the postseason in 2010, but each club has hit the skids recently in spite of each sitting above .500. Since an 11-2 run in early May, the Reds have dropped eight of 10 games to fall back in the NL Central race behind the Cardinals. However, Cincinnati starts this series strong with a 5-1 drubbing of Atlanta, as the Braves send out their hottest pitcher to get the team back on track.

With the struggles elsewhere in the rotation, Jair Jurrjens (6-1, 1.56 ERA) has stepped up to ace status by delivering eight straight quality starts. Jurrjens tossed 7.2 scoreless innings in a 2-0 shutout of the Pirates as a short road favorite his last time out. The righty eats up plenty of innings by going into the seventh inning in all but one start, while the Braves are 3-0 in his three outings at Turner Field. However, Jurrjens is winless in four career starts against the Reds, even though three of those losses came in Cincinnati.

The Reds counter with Johnny Cueto (2-1, 2.19 ERA), who is fresh off a no-decision in a Cincinnati win at Philadelphia. Cueto threw 108 pitches in six innings, but the Reds found a way to claim the first victory in his five career starts against the vaunted Phillies. Cincinnati is 2-0 in his two road starts this season, while Cueto has won a pair of road 'dog outings against the Braves in his four-year career.
