MLB Betting: Reds and Braves close series
Two clubs with different strengths will clash on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball as the Cincinnati Reds are in Atlanta to finish off their series against the Braves. The action will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 5:00 p.m. (PT).
These two National League teams are riding right around the same area in the standings and will look to crawl up a bit higher against each other.
Impressive numbers are easy to find for both sides, but they are almost complete opposites.
The Cincinnati Reds are in the top-5 or top-10 of seemingly every offensive statistical category in all of baseball. It almost becomes too much to mention, but here’s the list: batting average, slugging percentage, on base percentage, RBIs, homeruns, hits and runs.
A few players are hitting over .300 including Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips who also have 29 RBIs apiece. Jay Bruce is cruising just under .300 and has knocked 14 out of the park while recording 39 RBIs.
Atlanta’s offensive stats are nowhere near as impressive. However, Cincinnati also has a weakness and that is where the Braves shine.
Jair Jurrjens (6-1, 1.56 ERA) gets the nod for Atlanta and not only are his numbers incredible, but the Braves’ pitching staff as a whole are as well. ERA, strikeouts, home runs against and hits are all categories in which they are top-5 or better.
As for Jurrjens himself, his record and ERA are good enough to show the kind of season he is having along with a WHIP of 1.02. Since Atlanta is at home, however, take a look at those stats just for fun. Jurrjens is 3-0 with a .182 on-base percentage and a ridiculous WHIP of 0.64 at Turner Field this season.
While the Reds are at the bottom of many team pitching statistics, their starter for Sunday has come out of the gate nicely. Johnny Cueto (2-1, 2.19 ERA) returned from a shoulder injury on May 8 against the Chicago Cubs where he tallied his first win of the season. In his one loss so far, he gave up just three runs although he only pitched five innings.
To continue the theme of opposites, the ‘under’ is 9-2 in the Braves last 11 games while the ‘over’ is 5-1 in the Reds last six. The one game that went under for Cincinnati in that stretch was the first game of this series which the Reds won, 5-1.
It should be a good night for baseball in Atlanta as the forecast looks to be partly cloudy with just an eight percent chance of rain. The ballpark will be 85 degrees and cool down to about 75.
