Saturday’s betting notes: Man U-Barcelona ref tips

    Who’s hot

MLB: Milwaukee has won 13 of its last 16 ahead of Friday night’s action.

MLB: Seattle had won seven of its last eight heading into Friday’s game against the Yankees.

    Who’s not

MLB: Washington is 8-20 in its last 28 with Jordan Zimmerman on the hill.

MLB: Minnesota is just 5-13 at home this season.

    Key stat

10-0-1- Travis Browne, the 6-foot-7 Hawaiian slugger, is undefeated in his UFC bouts heading into Saturday night’s matchup with Stefan Struve. Browne could have his hands full in this one against “The Skyscraper” who stands 6-foot-10. Browne is currently set as a -150 favorite.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Wandy Rodriguez, Houston Astros: The Astros have scratched Rodriguez from his scheduled start against Arizona on Saturday as he is dealing with discomfort in his pitching elbow. Bud Norris moves up a day in the rotation to take his spot in Houston for Game 2 of the series.

    Game of the day

Barcelona (+100) at Manchester United (+250), Draw (+235)

    Notable quotable

“I really enjoy being the underdog most of the time, but I just take fights as they come. If Matt’s the underdog this time, he can have underdog status. I give it to him.” – Quinton “Rampage” Jackson about being a -330 favorite against Matt Hamill in UFC 130 on Saturday night.

    Notes and tips

Hungarian Viktor Kassai will referee Saturday’s Champions League final between Manchester United and Barcelona on Saturday, becoming the youngest ref to oversee the Champs League final. Kassai is 35 years old and is known to let the game move along without getting in the way with too many whistles. If anything, he has heard some criticism about being too lenient – not sending a single player off in four Champions League games. He also has World Cup experience, calling last summer’s semifinal between Spain and Germany. Oddsmakers list Barcelona at +100, Manchester United at +250 and the draw at +235.

Top-ranked Carolina Wozniacki was upset at the French Open on Friday, following on the heels of No. 2 ranked Kim Clijsters’ demise the day before, leaving the outright odds for the tournament in a major mess. Victoria Azarenka now sits as the tourney favorite (+300) ahead of her match with Roberta Vinci. Maria Sharapova is pegged at +400 and Petra Kvitova sits as the third favorite at +550.

The series prices for the NBA finals between the Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks have been moving around quite a bit since opening late Thursday night. Miami was set around -200 at the open but fell to about -185 at some shops by Friday evening, while others are now back around -200. Shop around, folks.

      Saturday's six-pack

-- Twins' nightmare of a season continued as they blew a 5-0 lead after seven innings and lost 6-5 at home to the Angels. Hideous, ugly loss.

-- Arizona has confidence; they trailed 6-0 at Houston, but rallied for an unlikely 7-6 win. Arizona has confidence and the Astros are awful.

-- The distance between first place and last place in the AL West is just a game and a half.

-- The catch Franklin Gutierrez made Friday night to rob Nick Swisher of a home run might be the best catch we'll see all season.

-- Bruins are in Stanley Cup finals for first time in 21 years; they beat Tampa Bay 1-0 in 7th game of Eastern finals. Boston last won Stanley Cup in 1972, when I was in Little League and there was still a goalie in the NHL (Pittsburgh's Andy Brown) who didn't wear a mask.

-- Bruins' Nathan Horton is first NHL player EVER to have a winning goal in two Game 7's in the same season.

      **************************

      Saturday's List of 13: Questions, questions....always, questions

      13) I wonder if Eldrick Woods likes playing golf as much as he used to? He’s become the 13-year old who dominated Little League when he was 12, but now that things have changed and he’s on the bigger field, he’s not dominant anymore. Have seen some kids give up baseball because of that.

      12) Should Indianapolis Colts have drafted a QB? Peyton Manning is 35, and has had two neck surgeries in the last 18 months. They say its not serious; I say anytime your name and the word surgery are in the same sentence, there is cause for concern.

      11) Why can’t a college kid sell his belongings for money? He gets books as part of his scholarship; is he allowed to sell those when he’s done with a class? If a kid wins the Heisman Trophy and wants to sell it, shouldn’t he be able to? I know there’s a line that you can’t cross where the abuse would be blatant, but it seems to me someone should be able to sell his or her belongings whenever they want to, without it being a violation of the enormous NCAA rulebook.

      10) I wonder if after 2.5 years, President Obama likes being President? Must be lot of fun riding on Air Force One, but can’t be much having schedules crammed with meetings and not really having much time for yourself. I’m just wondering if the job is at all fun, or if it all goes by in a blur because he is so busy?

      9) Do you think the Lakers conferred with Kobe Bryant before they hired Mike Brown? It would make sense to make sure Kobe didn’t hate the move before making it. I mean, if Kobe isn't going to buy into Brown’s message, it was stupid to hire him, and Brown has no shot at success.

      8) Shouldn’t every athlete who wants to turn pro take college classes on how to handle money? What could it hurt? It might even help. Ya think?

      7) Buster Posey’s broken ankle has people saying collisions at home plate should be eliminated, the way they are in amateur baseball; I would like to hear what Ray Fosse/Mike Scioscia had to say on the subject, and I would defer to whatever they said. Fosse was injured in a collision in the ’70 All-Star Game; Scioscia was well-known at being a superior plate-blocker. They know a hell of a lot more about it than I do.

      6) Did this guy David Einhorn get right of first refusal to buy the Mets when he gave the nitwit Wilpons $200M to become a minority investor? Seems like he would be too smart a guy not to get that. Otherwise, whats the point of becoming an investor?

      5) Speaking of which, now that David Wright has literally broken his back for the Mets, and then been kicked under the bus by the team’s owner, I wonder what he thinks of them? Wright has done a ton of stuff off the field for the Mets, you’d think they’d keep any negative opinions about him to themselves. You'd think.

      4) What happened with the Houston Rockets' coaching job? Did they fire Rick Adelman and if so, do they really think Kevin McHale is a better coach than Adelman? Did Adelman want to leave so he could pursue a job somewhere else? The whole situation makes no sense.

      3) When is someone going to do something about pro wrestling? Back in 1991, 51 wrestlers appeared in Wrestlemania; 20 years later, 14 of those 51 people are deceased, and only one of the 14 died after the age of 50. If those aren't alarming numbers, then forget I said anything.

      2) Who decided that TCU joining the Big East was a good idea? Get a map, find Fort Worth, TX and then see how close it is to anything in the east. Its ridiculous. Memphis/East Carolina/Central Florida all make a lot more sense than TCU, other than the fact that TCU has a good team.

      1) Who is going to be the 18th Big East team? Or will the league split into football/non-football leagues? With March Madness now at 68 teams, they could afford to have another automatic bid handed out, so the extra league wouldn’t be a problem that way.

Hot lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Pirates at Chicago Cubs (-135, N/A)

Being one of the public darlings of the league, oddsmakers never do Chicago Cubs backers any favors with their lines because, frankly, they don’t have to.

Midway through Friday’s 4-2 home matinee loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, our esteemed Twitter man tweeted that Cubs bettors would be down more than $17,000 if they had bet the loveable losers in every game over the last 10 years.

The Pirates are a lot better on the road this year and Chicago’s starting rotation is rotten, Saturday’s starter Randy Wells included. He has control issues just like Doug Davis.

"I'm not going to make any excuses for walking six people. That's for sure," Davis said after being on the hook for all four runs on Friday. "I've been around long enough to know that walking that many guys against any team is going to come back to haunt you."

Cubs backers could see more of the same on Saturday,Wells’ first start since he hit the shelf with a forearm issue.

It’s not like we’re crazy about Paul Maholm and his 1-7 record, but the Cubs are overvalued here. Again.

            Pick: Pirates

Arizona Diamondbacks at Houston Astros (-125, 7.5)

It’s been a lot longer than Zach Duke would have liked, but he’ s finally set to make his debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks after a broken hand set him back a couple of months.

He’s coming back at the right time, with Arizona heading into Friday’s action having won nine of its last 10 games. Duke has a lot to prove following a tough season last year. He finished with a 8-15 record and a fat 5.72 ERA in his final season with Pittsburgh.

Playing on all of those terrible Pirates teams had to wear on the guy and it sounds like he’s coming into this year with a better game plan.

"This team has proven that if you let guys put the ball in play, they're going to make the plays," Duke told reporters. "If I go out there and do what I do, keep the defense on its toes, it should be a good outcome."

Couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

            Pick: Diamondbacks

                      Hey, thanks for line, flashypants!

We've really got our hands full with the cleanup but it's coming along nicely. We all just have to be patient and helpful because this is something that just cannot be done quickly.

I've got to run off and join a crew right now, as a matter of fact.

                      Good luck today, buddy!
