Friday’s betting tips: TB goalie perfect under pressure

    Who’s hot

NHL: The over is 6-2 in Boston’s last eight games.

MLB: The under has cashed in 24 of the last 36 meetings between the Mets and Phillies.

MLB: The Red Sox have won 11 of their last 13.

    Who’s not

NHL: Tampa Bay is 4-20-4 in its last 28 games in Boston.

MLB: Pittsburgh is 1-7 in its last eight games following a loss.

MLB: Kansas City is just 5-14 on the road this season.

    Key stat

100 percent – The Tampa Bay Lightning have won all three of their Game 7 matchups in the club’s history and have been fantastic with their backs against the wall this year in the playoffs – thanks in large part to goaltender Dwayne Roloson. Tampa Bay downed the Penguins as visitors in Game 7 in Round 1 and is now 4-0 when facing elimination, while Roloson is a perfect 7-0 when facing elimination in his career, posting a 1.82 goals-against average and a .936 save percentage.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Buster Posey, San Francisco Giants: Posey was hammered by Florida’s Scott Cousins as he tried to protect home plate in the 12th inning of a 7-6 loss on Wednesday and suffered a nasty leg injury. MRI tests on Thursday revealed a broken ankle and ligament damage. Posey, who won the 2010 NL Rookie of the Year award, is the club’s starting catcher and was batting .284 with four homers and 21 RBIs. He could be out for the remainder of the season.

    Game of the day

Tampa Bay Lightning at Boston Bruins (-150, 5.5)

    Notable quotable

“This is a pure case of a guy that can bring the thunder off both sides probably bigger than anybody versus the guy who is the best mover in the game, who’s a great mix of defense and offense. And Djokovic is a lot better player than he was in ’09. If it’s a football game, I’ve got Djokovic a seven-and-a-half point favorite.” – American coach and commentator Brad Gilbert on Friday’s Novak Djokovic-Juan Martin Del Porto matchup in the third round of the French Open. Despite Gilbert’s take on the odds, the books have Djokovic set as a much bigger favorite with the No. 2-ranked player in the world currently pegged at -715.

    Notes and tips

The Cleveland Indians hope to have sparkplug outfielder Grady Sizemore back in the lineup for Friday’s game at Tampa Bay. Sizemore has been out of the lineup since May 10 with a right knee injury, but he looked good in drills running the bases Wednesday and manager Manny Acta said that he expected to have Sizemore for the weekend series. Sizemore is hitting .282 with six homers, while the Indians are pegged as a +150 underdog against David Price and the Rays.

With Kim Clijsters getting upset at the French Open by Arantxa Rus on Thursday, the field has opened up a bit. Oddmakers took their womens outright winner odds down after the No. 2 player in the world bowed out, but reopened with Victoria Azarenka set as the clear favorite at +350. Maria Sharapova follows at +450, while Petra Kvitova (+550), Carolina Wozniacki (+650) and Samantha Stosur round out the top five favorites.

The Boston Red Sox put 14 runs on the board for the second straight game on Thursday, drilling the Detroit Tigers 14-1 in an eight-inning contest that was shortened by rain. The 0-6 start the club got off to is far in the rear view mirror at this point as the club has won 11 of its last 13 and are just percentage points behind the Yankees for first place in the AL East. The last time they scored 14 in consecutive games was back in 1998.

      Friday's six-pack

-- Miami outscored the Bulls 18-3 down stretch and ended the Eastern Conference finals in five games. Heat-Mavericks is an interesting final.

-- I've spent last few weeks bashing Carl Crawford for his awful start, so it should be noted that he has 17 total bases in his last two games, as Boston is on a serious 11-2 roll.

-- Diamondbacks are also 11-2 in their last 13 games, even winning five of last six road games, and are two games over .500.

-- Florida Marlins' 29-19 start should sell a lot of season tickets for the new stadium, which is being built where the Orange Bowl once stood.

-- Buster Posey has a broken leg/torn ligaments in his ankle and is gone for at least two months. Giants have asked about Pudge Rodriguez as a temporary replacement.

-- If baseball playoffs started Friday morning, playoffs would be:
      NL-- Phillies-Cardinals-Giants-Marlins
      AL-- Bronx-Indians-Rangers-Red Sox

Friday's List of 13: Random Lists of 4........

      13) Four best QB’s (as in, if I had ball on my own 20-yard line, down 3 points, 2:00 to go, who would I want as my QB): John Elway-Roger Staubach-Kurt Warner-Steve Young.

      Top four, current QBs: Brees-Brady-PManning-Rivers

      12) Four best basketball players: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar-Michael Jordan-Wilt Chamberlain-Magic Johnson. This isn’t close. Look up Kareem’s win percentage in high school/college- he almost never lost. The dunk was outlawed because of him. Don’t penalize a guy because he didn’t do a lot of commercials. Kareem was the biggest single force in the history of basketball. I repeat- they outlawed the dunk because of him.

      11) My four favorite meals:
Little Anthony's pizza-chicken parm at Delmonico’s-Grand Slam breakfast at Denny’s-Mongolian Beef at PF Chang’s.

      10) Four teams only Marquis de Sade could root for: Clippers-Pirates-Bengals-Duke football.

      9) Four places I’d still like to visit: Toronto-Baton Rouge on a football Saturday night-spring training in Arizona-Oakland for an A’s game.

      8) My four ideal dates: ESPN’s Heather Cox-Vanna White-Diane Lane-Olivia Wilde (from House).

      7) My four favorite musicians: Bob Seger-Billy Joel-Faith Hill-Van Morrison.

      6) Four coolest actors in TV/movies: George Clooney-Kevin Costner-Harrison Ford-Andy Garcia.

      5) If I had to do it all over again, my four college choices:
      UNLV-Pepperdine-Cal-Santa Barbara-Central Florida.

      4) My four favorite athletes: Kurt Warner-Biff Pocoroba-Catfish Hunter-Vince Ferragamo.

      3) My four favorite movies, a list that seems to change a lot: Blue Chips-A Few Good Men-Fast Break-Bull Durham.

      2) Four favorite TV shows: Magnum PI-Odd Couple-House-CSI.

      1) Four coolest events I’ve seen live:
      -- Rams 11, Tampa Bay 6, 2000 NFC title game;
      -- Game 3, 2008 World Series in Philadelphia, Rays-Phils;
-- Tennessee-South Carolina football game in Columbia, November, 2008,
      -- Alabama-Tennessee football in Knoxville, October 2004.

Lightning at Bruins: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Lightning at Boston Bruins (-145, 5.5)

        Series tied 3-3

THE STORY: The Tampa Bay Lightning are tough to put away. After falling into a 3-1 hole in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series, the fifth-seeded Lightning electrified the fourth-seeded Pittsburgh Penguins by winning three straight to advance in the playoffs. Guy Boucher's club showed similar resolve on Wednesday by staving off elimination with a 5-4 home triumph over the third-seeded Boston Bruins in Game 6 of the conference finals. Hart Trophy finalist Martin St. Louis and Teddy Purcell collected two goals apiece to pace Tampa Bay. With the reigning Presidents' Trophy-winning Vancouver Canucks waiting in the wings, the Lightning and the Bruins will settle the score on Friday with a decisive Game 7 in Beantown.

        TV: 8 ET, VERSUS, CBC
Tampa Bay and Boston play in a Game 7 with a ticket to the Cup final on the line.

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Boston is attempting to return to the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1990. To do so, the Bruins will have to win their second Game 7 of this postseason. Coach Claude Julien's club dropped Game 6 on the road, but returned home to defeat the rival Montreal Canadiens in the conference quarterfinals. David Krejci netted the franchise's first postseason hat trick since Cam Neely - who is now the team president - accomplished the feat in 1991. Krejci gave Boston a 2-1 advantage in the first period before netting a power-play goal midway into the third. He was credited with his team-leading 10th goal of the playoffs with 6:32 remaining, but the Bruins could not net the equalizer. Krejci has collected nine goals and six assists in his last 10 contests. Vezina Trophy finalist Tim Thomas struggled in his second outing in three games. The All-Star has permitted 19 goals in six games. Now considering Thomas stopped all 31 shots he faced in Game 3 - and all but one in Game 5 - well, you get the picture.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING: Tampa Bay will attempt to remain perfect in Game 7s. The Lightning are 4-0 in hockey's pivotal game - including a win in the conference quarterfinals over the Penguins. Captain Vincent Lecavalier and Steve Downie set up a pair of goals apiece in the Game 6 triumph. The performance was a welcome relief for Downie, who was having a brutal series. Prior to the contest, the 24-year-old Ontario native had failed to secure a point in any of the five games. After being pulled in two contests this series and sitting out Game 5, Dwayne Roloson turned aside 16 shots in Game 6. The 41-year-old netminder improved to 7-0 in career elimination games with Wednesday's win. Left wing Sean Bergenheim, who leads the NHL with nine postseason goals, sat out Game 6 with an undisclosed injury. His availability for Game 7 is unknown.

WHO'S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Boston right wing Nathan Horton notched a pair of assists on Wednesday. He now has scored seven goals and set up nine others during the playoffs. Steven Stamkos recorded a goal and two assists in Game 6 and now has four points in his last two contests.

SPECIAL TEAMS: After going 0 for 9 on the power play in their last three games, both teams connected with the man advantage in Game 6. Tampa Bay went 3-for-4 to improve to 17-for-65 in the postseason, while Boston scored on one of five chances to up its mark to 5-for-61. The Lightning have now killed off 72 of 78 shorthanded situations in the playoffs.

        TRENDS:

        * Favorite is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
        * Home team is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
        * Lightning are 16-35-5 in the last 56 meetings.
        * Lightning are 4-20-4 in the last 28 meetings in Boston.

LAST WORD: The Lightning and Bruins have both defeated the Canucks in their lone respective meetings of the season. Tampa Bay skated to a 5-4 road win on Dec. 11 while Boston recorded a 3-1 road victory over Vancouver on Feb. 26.

Ice picks: Friday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Lightning at Boston Bruins (-150, 5.5)

If there’s one thing the Lightning know how to do, it’s win when their backs are against the wall. Tampa Bay improved to 4-0 this season when facing elimination, including a thrilling, 5-4 win in Game 6 in Florida.

"It's been our motto all season — resilience and work ethic,'' said Tampa Bay forward Teddy Purcell. "When we work hard around the crease and create traffic, that's when we have success against Tim Thomas. When we don't, he out-competes us and comes out on top.''

Don’t expect Thomas or the rest of the Bruins to intimidate the Lightning in Massachusetts. Tampa Bay already has won a Game 7 on the road this year, besting Pittsburgh, 1-0 in Pennsylvania as it completed a rally from a 3-1 series deficit. Overall, the Lightning are 3-0 all-time in Game 7s and are trying to become the first team in NHL history to win each of their first four Game 7s.

The Bruins, meantime, haven’t fared well recently in decisive contests. Boston beat Montreal in Game 7 on home ice earlier this postseason, but dropped its two prior Game 7s, both on home ice: against Carolina in 2009 and Philadelphia in 2010.

It also would be difficult to find a more clutch goalie in the playoffs than Tampa Bay’s Dwayne Roloson. Despite getting pulled in Game 4, Roloson is an absurd 7-0 in elimination games in his career. In those games, he has a miniscule 1.82 goals-against average and a sterling .936 save percentage.

"He was our MVP," Tampa Bay forward Steven Stamkos said. "He was clutch when we needed him. The numbers he put up were ridiculous. Our penalty kill is ultimately what won us this series, and he was our best penalty killer. Words can't express how much he meant to us in this series."

        Pick: Tampa Bay

Hot lines: Friday’s best MLB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Francisco Giants at Milwaukee Brewers (-110, 6.5)

Just a day after the Giants learned they will likely be without slugger Buster Posey, their offense faces a stiff test against Shaun Marcum and the surging Milwaukee Brewers.

Milwaukee has won 13 of its last 16 games, including the first six games of the club’s current home stand to climb four games over .500 after a rough start to the season. In short, the Brewers are not to be a team to be trifled with right now.

"I really do not look at to who is coming in," Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke told reporters. "We went into Washington, we got swept three games. I don't care if it's the world champions, I don't care if it's the team that lost 105 games the year before, if you're not ready for that game, you're going to get beat."

That sort of no-nonsense approach seems to be catching on with Shaun Marcum too. He takes the hill looking for his fourth straight win and is coming off an eight-inning gem against the Rockies.

Tim Lincecum goes for the Giants, but we can’t see The Freak getting much run support.

                Pick: Brewers

Florida Marlins at Los Angeles Dodgers (-115, 7.5)

The Marlins took advantage of a Posey-less Giants club on Thursday, squeaking out a 1-0 victory as Anibal Sanchez spun a five-hitter.

Florida, which was without Hanley Ramirez after he picked up a right foot bruise the night before, had plenty of opportunities to put some more crooked numbers on the board but didn’t do much with their 10 hits.

Manager Edwin Rodriguez figures that Ramirez should be back in the lineup Friday and Marlins bettors have to be hoping the day off was good for the struggling shortstop. He was held hitless in three games before the injury and is batting just .211 on the year.

Still, we like the way Florida is grinding out wins lately. The Fish have won five of their last six and might be able to take advantage of Jon Garland, who gave up seven runs in 3 2/3 innings his last time out.

                Pick: Marlins
