Wednesday’s betting notes: A’s closer slams skip

    Who’s hot

NBA: Oklahoma City is 7-1-1 against the spread in its last nine games in Dallas.

NHL: The home team is 11-5 in the last 16 meetings between the Bruins and Lightning.

MLB: Cleveland is 25-4 in its last 29 home games.

    Who’s not

NBA: Five of the last 21 meetings between the Thunder and Mavericks in Dallas have played under the total.

NHL: Just one of Tampa Bay’s last eight games have played under the total.

MLB: Minnesota is 5-17 in its last 22 home games heading into Tuesday’s action.

    Key stat

106 – Number of bats Albert Pujols went between home runs before he finally broke his dinger slump Monday night – the longest drought of his career. He hit his eighth jack of the year in St. Louis’ 3-1 victory over the Padres, which came exactly a month after he hit his seventh homer. Pujols averages a home run every 14.3 at bats in his career.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Sean Bergenheim, Tampa Bay Lightning: Bergenheim is listed as questionable for Wednesday’s game after suffering an undisclosed injury and missing the final two periods of Game 5’s loss. The left wing leads the NHL playoffs with nine goals.

    Game of the day

Oklahoma City Thunder at Dallas Mavericks (-6.5, 198.5)

    Notable quotable

“I can’t remember another comeback like that. Once we got to [overtime] we had to feel good about ourselves after being down 15 and making all that comeback. And we obviously talked about it in timeouts that we’ve got to go for it now. We’re here and this is our ballgame and we’ve got to go for it, so that’s what we talked about.” – Dirk Nowitzki after he poured in 40 points in Dallas’ huge comeback victory in Game 4. The Mavs look to advance to the NBA Finals Wednesday, leading Oklahoma City 3-1 in the series.

    Notes and tips

Oakland Athletics relief pitcher Brian Fuentes blasted manager Bob Geren following Monday’s loss, questioning the team’s direction and Geren’s managing time after he took his AL-high seventh defeat of the season. Fuentes, who has been the club’s closer all season, claims that now he never knows when Geren will bring him in the game. "The games in San Francisco were unorthodox managing," Fuentes told reporters. I get up in the seventh inning. I have no idea. I didn't stretch. If there was some sort of communication beforehand, I'd be ready, which I was. I was heated up. I was ready. But there's just a lack of communication. I don't think anybody knows what direction (Geren) is headed." Oakland had lost six straight games heading into Tuesday night’s action.

After shocking everyone by sitting veteran Dwayne Roloson in favor of Mike Smith in Game 5’s loss to the Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning coach Guy Boucher will go reportedly back with Roloson for Wednesday’s Game 6. Smith stopped 17 of the 19 shots in the loss, which was his first start of the postseason. Roloson was pulled twice in this series before he was benched on Monday, but has been Tampa Bay’s go-to guy since coming over from the Islanders early in the regular season. The Lightning are set as -120 favorites in Game 6.

Rafael Nadal advanced to the second round of the French Open on Tuesday, but it wasn’t pretty. He needed five sets to defeat John Isner, marking the first time he played a five-set match in his last seven visits to Roland Garros. "Tough, tough moments for me," Nadal said. "I played too nervous, in my opinion." Nadal played better to finally send Isner packing, but will need to be much better moving forward in the tournament. He’s still favored to tie Bjorn Borg with his sixth French Open title at +100. Novak Djokovic is right on his heels at +125.

      Wednesday's six-pack

-- Rockies P Jorge de la Rosa tore a ligament in his pitching elbow and is done for the year, obviously. Tough blow for Colorado.

-- Joe West started umpiring in major leagues when I was in high school and I'm 51 now, so West has been around for a long, long time. .

-- Sporting News has LSU #1 in its pre-season college football ratings.

-- Miami beat the Bulls in OT by 8, as Chicago's Rose played the whole second half, and it showed at the end. Heat now leads series 3-1.

-- Mike Miller was +36 in a game Miami won in OT; that means when Miller was off the court, for 27:54, Heat was outscored by 28 points. In the 26:06 Miller played, Miami was +36. An amazing statistic.

-- San Jose-Vancouver Tuesday night was 21st overtime game in NHL playoffs this spring, but first one in 20 days, as Canucks won to go to the Stanley Cup finals for first time in 17 years. Road teams are 13-8 in OT games this spring. It was the first loss in six playoff OT games for San Jose this year.

      ***********************

      Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week stuff..........

      13) Here’s my proposal on how to tweak the first round of NBA/NHL playoffs, which would make the regular season a little more meaningful.

In the 1-8 series, the #1 seed would get all seven games at home.
In the 2-7 series, the #2 seed would get six home games (3-1-3 format). The #3 seed would get five home games (3-2-2) and the 4-5 series would stay as it is now. Just something to think about.

      12) Nitwits who ran the Mets wanted to get rid of Bobby Bonilla after the ’99 season, because he was a clubhouse cancer; instead of giving him $5.9M to go away then and there, these geniuses agreed to give him deferred money, as in 25 years of payments every July 1, starting this year, worth a total of $29.8M. Brilliant!!!

Hard to imagine why they’re nearing a state of financial ruin.

      11) John Wooden’s family signed on with reps from IMG, so they can properly cash in on the former coach, now that he is deceased. Not sure what I think of this, other than I hope that when I go to Vegas in July, I don’t see a guy dressed up as Wooden panhandling for money with fake-Elvis and fake-Michael Jackson in front of Bally’s.

      10) Arizona guard MoMo Jones left the desert to transfer closer to home; rumor was he wanted to go to St John’s, but he can’t, because his high school coach Maurice Hicks is Director of Operations for the Red Storm, which prevents St John’s from recruiting Jones. Seton Hall and Hofstra are now his rumored landing spots.

      9) Speaking of Jones, his old high school, Rice HS, is closing down for good next month. They have a great basketball tradition, playing all over New York City and the northeast, since they didn’t have a home court.

      8) Over the next six years, the Red Sox are going to pay Carl Crawford $117M and he’s batting 8th. As in next-to-last. Yikes.

      7) I read this week that ESPN.com pays columnist Rick Reilly $2.4M a year; here is where I quickly move on to next note before I say something unkind. In other words, the money the Sox are paying Crawford is better spent than the $2.4M Reilly is stealing from ESPN.

      6) Penn State will have a D-I hockey team in two years; that and the fine wrestling program they’ve committed a lot of resources towards probably contributed to Ed DeChellis bolting for Navy, even though he is taking a $200,000 pay cut to coach the Middies. Basketball ain’t a priority in Happy Valley, not that it is in Annapolis, either.

      5) Plaxico Burress gets out of jail June 6, just in time…….to play in the CFL? Either that or the UFL. The Arena League? Its either that or a gig on Court TV. Burress should have some interesting opinions or our legal system; plus, I think his wife's a lawyer.

      4) Hope VCU students enjoyed their run to the Final Four this spring, because their student fee for next fall got raised $50, in order to help defer the cost of Shaka Smart’s new contract.

      3) There are seven guys who have been NFL head coaches after being assistants for Mike Holmgren; six of the seven have/had winning records, then there is Marty Mornhinweg, who went 5-27 in two dreadful seasons with Matt Millen’s Lions. Mornhinweg is now OC for the Eagles, and Lord help the team that gives him another head coaching shot.

      2) Minor League baseball teams combined to sell $151.1M worth of apparel and novelties LY, the second-best year they’ve ever had.

      1) Someone needs to explain to me exactly what it is the royal family does over there in England; are they powerful? popular? Do they have Facebook pages? Are they on Twitter? Inquiring minds want to know.

Thunder at Mavericks: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Dallas Mavericks (-6.5, 198.5)

        THE STORY
: Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks dealt the Oklahoma City Thunder a stunning blow in Game 4 of the NBA's Western Conference final. The Mavericks look to finish the job Wednesday as they host the deflated Thunder with a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. A victory would move Dallas into the NBA Finals for the first time since 2006.

        TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS: Down 15 with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, Dallas stormed back against an overwhelmed Oklahoma City defense - and as expected, Nowitzki led the charge. The 7-footer scored nine straight points during a stretch that cut the deficit to two, then tied things up on a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining. Jason Kidd hit the dagger in OT, a 3-pointer with 40 seconds left that gave Dallas the lead for good. The win extended the Mavs' road winning streak in the playoffs to five games, setting them up to win the conference title at home. Nowitzki finished with 40 points and has been next to impossible to contain all series long.

ABOUT THE THUNDER: The Thunder played what might have been their worst five minutes of the playoffs during Dallas' improbable comeback. the defense had no answer for Nowitzki, while the offense fell flat. Kevin Durant finished with 29 points and 15 rebounds but had his attempt at a go-ahead 3-pointer blocked by Shawn Marion in the final seconds of the fourth quarter. Russell Westbrook finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and eight assists but had yet another string of questionable shot attempts that ultimately cost his team a chance at wrapping things up in regulation. The duo will need to be better if Oklahoma City plans on extending the series.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: Even with a 7-for-21 performance in Game 3, Nowitzki is shooting 56 percent (41 for 73) from the field against the Thunder - and a ridiculous 50 for 52 from the free-throw line. Thunder C Serge Ibaka had five blocks Monday night, giving him eight in the past two games. Denver as a team has just six blocks in that span.

KEY STATISTIC: 12 - Nowitzki's points-per-game average in the fourth quarter against the Thunder. He matched that number in the fourth period of Game 4, helping lead the Mavericks back from certain defeat.

LAST WORD: Durant had a career-high nine turnovers in Game 4. The Thunder finished with 25 turnovers as a team.

TRENDS: Oklahoma City is 11-5-1 against the spread in its last 17 road games.
The over is 16-5 in the last 21 meetings between the two teams in Dallas.
Dallas is 9-1 against the spread in its last 10 home games.

Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Dallas Mavericks (-6.5, 198.5)

Jason Terry allowed himself to smile, but before the final seconds even ticked off his team’s miraculous Game 4 overtime victory in Oklahoma City, he was heard shouting a clear message to the team’s bench: “One more, one more.”

One of just two Maverick players to reach the NBA Finals on the 2006 squad, Terry held up a single digit to the bench as the clock ran out. He knew his team would celebrate, but he wanted to make sure it was already focused on the task at hand in Dallas.

He has no reason to believe the Mavs won’t show a killer instinct.

Dallas closed out Portland at the Rose Garden, 103-96 in its first opportunity in Game 6, leading by as many as 17 late. The team also left no doubt with a 122-86 win over the Lakers in Game 4 to complete a sweep after holding an advantage of as many as 36 points in the second half.

When the Mavericks have a team down in the postseason they do something they have struggled with historically – make them stay down.

"Past history doesn’t mean much to us," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "Right now we’re really focused on the here and now. We’re five wins a way from our goal and it's important to see that big picture. That's why this next game is important because it's another opportunity for us, in terms in things that have gone in the past, none of that stuff matters."

Meantime, the Thunder must be able to learn from the past while letting this loss go. That’s going to be difficult, especially for young star Kevin Durant. The NBA scoring champ had 29 points, but failed to score the final 5:06 of regulation and all of overtime. After the game, he has heaping blame on himself.

"I feel upset because I let them down," Durant said of the fans. "I let the city down."

They are going to be even more upset when the series fails to return to Oklahoma City.

        Pick: Dallas

Bruins at Lightning: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Tampa Bay Lightning (-120, 5.5)

          THE STORY
: Tim Thomas won the Vezina Trophy two years ago and is once again up for the award in 2011. After denying Steve Downie on a point-blank opportunity in the third period on Monday, Thomas will have no trouble convincing the Tampa Bay Lightning that he is worthy of the hardware. The All-Star netminder turned aside 33 shots and Brad Marchand scored to snap a tie late in the second period as the Boston Bruins skated to a 3-1 home triumph in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals. The Bruins lead the best-of-seven series, 3-2, and are on the precipice of advancing to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1990. The Lightning will look to stave off elimination when the clubs reconvene at the St. Pete Times Forum on Wednesday for Game 6.

          TV: 8 ET, VERSUS, CBC

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Boston is 17-4 all-time when leading a series 3-2 - and it can thank Thomas for earning a 3-2 lead in this set. With the Bruins nursing a 2-1 lead midway through the third period, Downie found himself staring at an open net. The veteran goaltender quickly took action and denied Downie with a bottom edge of his stick as the blade bounced off the goal post. Nathan Horton and Rich Peverley sandwiched goals around Marchand's game-winner on Monday. After being whistled for back-to-back interference penalties, Horton leveled the contest at 4:24 into the second period. He one-timed a centering feed from Milan Lucic for his seventh goal of the postseason. Michael Ryder saw his five-game point streak come to an end on Monday. He had collected three goals and four assists prior to be kept off the scoresheet.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING: Guy Boucher surprised many by starting Mike Smith in Game 5. After stopping all 29 shots in two relief appearances in this series, Smith made his first career postseason start and finished with 17 saves. Simon Gagne opened the scoring 69 seconds into the contest by converting a 2-on-1 breakaway. The 31-year-old Quebec native scored for the second straight game and collected his seventh career goal in nine playoff games against the Bruins. Sean Bergenheim, who leads the NHL with nine postseason goals, exited Monday's contest with an undisclosed injury. He did not play in the second or third period, and Boucher offered little in regard to the Finn's status for Game 6. Roloson is now expected to start in goal.

WHO'S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Downie is having a series he'd like to forget. The 24-year-old Ontario native has failed to secure a point in all five games and has amassed 20 penalty minutes. With Tampa Bay pressing for a potential tying goal in the third period, Downie was whistled for a costly boarding penalty which injured defenseman Johnny Boychuk. Boston captain Zdeno Chara picked up an assist on Marchand's goal. The point was his first since he collected three in a Game 3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers in the conference semifinals.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Both clubs went 0-for-4 on the power play in Game 5 and have failed to score on nine opportunities with the man advantage in the last three contests. As a result, the Bruins fell to 4-for-56 while the Lightning dropped to 14-for-61 in the playoffs. Tampa Bay has killed off 68 of 73 shorthanded situations.

LAST WORD: Boston improved to 9-2 in the playoffs when it has been outshot in a game. Tampa Bay recorded a 34-19 edge in shots on goal - including a decisive 14-4 advantage in the first period.

TRENDS: Boston has won eight of its last 10 overall.
The under is 1-5-2 in Tampa Bay's last eight home games.
The home team is 11-5 in the last 16 meetings between the two teams.

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Tampa Bay Lightning (-120, 5.5)

The Lightning have more questions than answers heading back to Florida trying to win Game 6 and send the series back to Boston.

Tampa Bay first must find a way to replace the impact of forward Sean Bergenheim, who leads the postseason with nine goals. He suffered a lower body injury on a hit in the first period and is listed as doubtful for Game 6. The injury is especially devastating as the Lightning have been pathetic on the power play during the series.

Martin St. Louis, Steve Stamkos and Vincent Levacalier had trouble finding any chemistry on the man advantage in a 3-1 defeat in Boston last weekend. For the series, Tampa Bay is a pathetic 2-for-18 on the power play and was just as bad in Game 6 – 0-for-4 with just four shots on goal.

"We were trying to make too many passes, and we didn't have too much setup time," Stamkos said. "We didn't get enough shots. Thomas made some nice saves, but we didn't challenge him the way we did in (Game 4). We didn't do a good enough job of getting screens, either."

Dwayne Roloson was a stone wall through the first two rounds, but has been incredibly human against the Bruins. After he was pulled early in Game 4 before Tampa rallied, Mike Smith came on in relief to boost the team to victory. Coach Guy Boucher opted to ride Smith into Boston to less successful results – Smith was solid but unspectacular as he finished with just 17 saves.

Now Boucher is reportedly going back to Roloson for Game 6, but considering how sneaky the bench boss was in Game 5, you may want to wait to see who's in the cage before sending in your wagers.

However, that might not matter much at this point.

          Pick: Boston

Hot lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arizona Diamondbacks at Colorado Rockies (-115, 8)

It was a mix of good and bad news for the Colorado Rockies as they picked up a win in the front end of Tuesday’s doubleheader with the Diamondbacks.

On the plus side, their offense came to life after a few games of futility, turning a 3-0 deficit into a 12-4 victory. Carlos Gonzalez had a huge game at the plate with a pair of home runs and four RBIs.

However, the Rockies also saw Jorge De La Rosa come out of the game in the third inning with an elbow injury. De La Rosa had been dealing with some blister issues on his pitching hand, but this could turn into something more serious.

He threw one pitch after calling the trainer out from the dugout, but then headed straight to the showers. Heading into Tuesday’s start, De La Rosa was 5-2 with a 3.34 ERA.

We’re looking for more offense in this one after the doubleheader.

                    Pick: Over

Seattle Mariners at Minnesota Twins (+105, 7.5)

With Jim Thome back in the lineup and Joe Mauer getting closer – he’s set to DH in an extended spring training game Wednesday – at least there is some good news for Twins supporters.

But there isn’t much else to get excited about. The club can’t get anything going at home and wasted a pair of homers from Thome Monday night when the bullpen blew another lead.

"You go on the DL and you go down, you always want to come back and swing the bat well," Thome, who is seven homers away from 600, told reporters. "Unfortunately, we didn't win the ballgame. That's what you want to do every night. It felt good to swing the bat good, but ultimately, it's all about winning."

Which makes it surprising that anybody in Minnesota is showing up to watch this club. The Twins were just 4-12 at home heading into Tuesday night’s action and with the struggling Brian Duensing on the mound for Wednesday’s game against Erik Bedard, we don’t like their chances.

                    Pick: Mariners
