Tuesday’s betting tips: Mets owner burns team’s stars

    Who’s hot

NBA: Miami has won and covered in four of its last five.

NHL: The over is 13-3-1 in San Jose’s last 17 road games and has cashed in on eight of the club’s last 10 meetings with Vancouver.

MLB: San Francisco has won 19 of its last 26 home games.

    Who’s not

NBA: The visiting club is 3-7-1 against the spread in the last 10 meetings between Chicago and Miami.

NHL: The underdog is 4-13 in the last 17 dates between Vancouver and San Jose.

MLB: Kansas City has lost nine of its last 11 and is just 5-12 in its last 17 in Baltimore.

    Key stat

11- Number of opponents who have shot at least 50 percent against the Chicago Bulls this year (82 regular season games and 13 postseason contests). Chicago’s record fell to 2-9 in those games after Miami shot 50.7 percent in Game 3’s win. "We've been known as a defensive team. I haven't seen a team shoot 50 on us in a long time," guard Keith Bogans said. "If they're shooting 50 percent, they're not doing our job. We definitely have to bring the energy, that gets everything going. Our offense and our defense."

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Joe Thornton, San Jose Sharks: Sharks captain Joe Thornton is expected to play against the Vancouver Canucks Tuesday despite an undisclosed injury that he picked up in the third period of Sunday’s loss. Thornton, who leads the Sharks with 17 points in the postseason, received medical treatment Monday but didn’t skate with the team. San Jose is set as a +150 underdog in Game 5.

    Game of the day

Chicago Bulls at Miami Heat (-5, 178)

    Notable quotable

"Pressure is always there. I know there is a lot of expectations because of the streak I have, but, look, I'm really happy the way I'm handling things right now on and off the court… Coming into a Grand Slam with three titles on clay courts and winning against the best player ever on this surface gives me a lot of motivation, a lot of confidence that I'm trying to use on the court.” – Novak Djokovic after he beat Thiemo de Bakkar in the opening round of the French Open, extending his winning streak to 40 straight matches. Djokovic is looking to become the first man to win the Australian and Frech Opens back-to back since 1992, when Jim Courier turned the trick. Djokovic sits around +135 to win the tournament, second favorite to Rafael Nadal (-110).

    Notes and tips

The New York Mets are in damage control mode after the New Yorker ran a story which had some interesting comments from Mets owner Fred Wilpon about Jose Reyes, David Wright and Carlos Beltran. In the article Wilpon is quoted as saying Reyes “thinks he's going to get Carl Crawford money" and "won't get it," Beltran is "65 to 70 percent of what he was," and got his seven-year, $119 million contract with the Mets solely because of "one [playoff] series," and Wright is "a really good kid. A very good player. Not a superstar."

The Vancouver Canucks killed five penalties in the first 22 minutes of Sunday’s win over San Jose, bouncing back after they had allowed three power play goals in Friday’s loss. After weathering the early storm, the Canucks buried three goals with the man advantage to put the Sharks away, securing a 3-1 lead in the series.

Chase Utley returned to the lineup for the Philadelphia Phillies against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night, making his first start of the season. Utley has been out with tendinitis in his knee and was slated to hit second in the order, which could be the offensive spark the team desperately needs. Philadelphia produces just 3.83 runs per game – 23rd in the bigs.

      Tuesday's six-pack

-- Phillies lost their last four Sunday games, scoring a total of five runs. -- Texas Rangers are now 10-2 with Josh Hamilton in the lineup, 15-21 without him.

-- Nationals got shut out in each of Livan Hernandez’ last three starts, losing last two by 1-0 scores.

-- Eldrick Woods is now the #12-ranked golfer in the world, the first time since April 1997 he’s been out of the top 10.

-- Indians' magical season continued with 3-2 win over Red Sox, as they got Carl Crawford to hit into a 4-6-3 DP when they had first-and-third and one out, with tying run on third base.

-- Bruins beat Tampa Bay 3-1, are now one win away from going to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in 21 years.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

      13) Friday night in San Francisco, A’s walked Aubrey Huff on purpose to get to Buster Posey with righty Michael Wuertz on the mound, a shaky move, but it worked. Next time thru the lineup, they walked Freddy Sanchez to get to Huff, with lefty Craig Breslow on the hill and the game on the line. Huff got a hit, and the A’s lost.

Not sure I’ve ever seen that before, where a guy got walked intentionally one time, then the next time up they walked the guy in front of him to get to the hitter they walked intentionally last time.

      12) To top off the bizarre managerial decisions of Bob Geren, on Sunday, with lefty starter Gio Gonzalez pitching well but tiring, Geren takes him out and puts righty Wuertz in, so he could face……Huff, the same guy he wouldn’t let pitch to Huff Friday night.

He got Huff out on the first pitch, but I’m so confused; I’m sure he has his logic, but its beyond my feeble mind and when you get swept three straight, you look bad no matter what you do anyway. Go figure.

      11) American League managers have to hate interleague play; the game is lot more complex when the pitcher has to bat.

      10) Personally, I like interleague play, but I think they should blow up the AL/NL model and realign geographically, like the NBA has it. My plan for realignment is on the baseball page on this website.

      9) Washington Nationals scored 0-0-17-3-1-3 runs in their last six games; they need Ryan Zimmerman back and soon. Odd thing is, when they got the 17 runs, their starting pitcher didn't get the win that night.

      8) Orioles’ farmhand Mike Flacco (brother of Ravens’ QB Joe) was the South Atlantic League Player of the Week last week, hitting .538 with seven doubles. Flacco plays for the Delmarva Shorebirds, who have really cool hats.

      7) At least ten pitchers have already inquired to Bartolo Colon’s doctor about the medical procedure that has revived Colon’s career. MLB brass is inquiring too, but for a different reason; they want to make sure its within the rules.

      6) Seattle Mariners are first team in 12 years to go nine games in row with their starting pitcher going 7+ innings in all nine games while allowing two or less earned runs.

      5) How did former Dayton basketball coach Brian Gregory get an ACC gig? Dayton was 48-48 in the Atlantic 14 the last six years, with only one winning season in league play; he made the NCAAs twice in last eight years, winning one game there. Georgia Tech is one of the harder jobs in the ACC, but still, it’s a big step up from Dayton. I’m reading that there a lot of people in western Ohio that weren’t that sad to see Gregory go.

      4) Did you know that Jerry Glanville and Marty Schottenheimer are both head coaches in the UFL? If the NFL lockout lasts into September, the UFL has to be flexible and put all its games on Sunday afternoons. Hell, I’ll watch if they’re on.

      3) San Diego Padres aren’t a good team, but their bullpen has a 2.17 ERA this year, best in baseball. Next best is Atlanta (2.57).

      2) Then there’s Met owner Fred Wilpon, who trashed his best players in a magazine article that came out Monday. Brilliant!!! They’re probably trying to trade free agents-to-be Reyes/Beltran, and the owner is kicking dirt on their graves. Still think Mets will let both of them walk and take the four draft picks to fortify the farm system for the near future, but it doesn’t help a franchise when the owner shows that he’s a moron.

      1) Offensive lineman Chris Snee of Giants is married to Tom Coughlin’s daughter; if there’s a family function during this hideous lockout, are the two of them allowed to talk? Could Coughlin get fined for talking to his son-in-law?

Bulls at Heat: What bettors need to know
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at Miami Heat (-5, 178)

            THE STORY
: Chris Bosh had his best game of the postseason Sunday as the Miami Heat took a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference final. Bosh and the Heat look to continue their solid stretch of play as they welcome Derrick Rose and the Bulls in Game 3 on Tuesday night. Chicago has dropped two straight games for the first time since early February.

            TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE HEAT: After a modest regular season and a quiet second-round series against the Boston Celtics, Bosh has suddenly emerged as the biggest threat on a team with three of them. The 6-foot-10 power forward made 13 of his final 16 shots in Sunday's 96-85 victory in front of a raucous crowd at American Airlines Arena. Bosh finished with 34 points in the victory, nearly as many as superstar teammates LeBron James (22) and Dwyane Wade (17) had between them. Even more satisfying for Bosh was that he did most of his damage against Bulls counterpart Carlos Boozer, who suggested prior to the series that Bosh wasn't a star.

ABOUT THE BULLS: Rose needed plenty of help Sunday - and he didn't get nearly enough. The league MVP struggled from the field as the Heat routinely double-teamed him, preventing him from driving to the basket. He and Boozer both shot 8 for 19 on the night, part of a 41-percent shooting performance from a team that is struggling to keep up offensively with the Heat. The team defense took a hit as well, with reserve center Omer Asik leaving the game in the second half with a strained muscle in his left leg. Asik, who is one of the Bulls' top defenders off the bench, did not return to the game and his status for Game 4 is up in the air.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: Wade struggled in Game 3. His 6-for-17 effort from the field was his worst of the playoffs, and the 17 points marked his fewest since Game 2 of the Heat's first-round series with Philadelphia. Bulls F Taj Gibson continues to sizzle from the floor, going 5 of 6 on Sunday and 31 for 45 over his last seven contests.

KEY STATISTIC: 39-5 - Miami's record when Bosh, Wade and James combine for 70 or more points. They had 73 on Sunday, their first time over the 70-point plateau since Game 5 of their second-round series with Boston.

LAST WORD: James has two zero-turnover games so far in the playoffs. He had just one game without a turnover in 79 regular-season outings.

TRENDS: The Bulls are 4-1 ATS in their last five games as road underdogs.

The Heat are 5-0 ATS in their last five games as favorites and 6-0 in their last six games playing on one days' rest.

The over is 11-2 in the Bulls last 13 playoff games as underdogs.

Pick 'n' roll: Tuesday's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at Miami Heat (-5, 178)

The Heat may have been labeled as a group of talented individuals who don’t necessarily make up a great team, but the sum of the parts is adding up just fine in the playoffs—especially in the Eastern Conference finals.

Miami leads top-seeded Chicago 2-1 because it has been getting contributions from everyone. In Game 2 it was the emergence of an injury-plagued Udonis Haslem and LeBron James taking over in the fourth quarter in addition to Dwyane Wade’s 24 points. In Game 3 it was Chris Bosh exploding for 34 points on 13-for-18 shooting.

“When someone has it going on this team, we keep feeding them,” James told the Miami Herald, this time referring to Bosh.

The Bulls, on the other hand, don’t have enough options. When Derrick Rose struggles, so does Chicago. The MVP made only seven of 23 shots in Game 2 and got little help from Carlos Boozer. Rose scored a pedestrian 20 points on Sunday night and although Boozer finally delivered, nobody else provided much.

“Every pick-and-roll, they were doubling me,” Rose told the Palm Beach Post of the Heat. “They're a great defensive team, going for steals and closing in on the paint. We've got to find a way to find some easier baskets.”

It’s only two games, but the Bulls literally have not been in this kind of funk in more than three months. The last time they dropped two games in a row was way back in early February. With another game in South Beach on Tuesday, the slide could hit three.

Miami is the only team that has not lost a home game in the playoffs. Erik Spoelstra’s squad is 7-0 (5-2 ATS) at American Airlines Arena during the postseason and has won nine a row there overall.

            Pick: Heat

Canucks were outshot 35-13 in Game 4, but after killing off five power plays, they scored three goals in 1:55 span, all with two-man advantage. Vancouver then withstood 17-shot San Jose barrage in third period and can wrap up series here. Canucks are now 6-2 in last eight games against San Jose, which has lost six of its last eight games overall. Vancouver has won six of nine playoff home games. Vancouver is 8-19 on power play in its last three games. Home team has had 3:14+ extra with power play in every game of this series so far. Canucks haven't been to Cup finals in 17 years, so this could be a big night for the home team.

Sharks at Canucks: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Jose Sharks at Vancouver Canucks (-167, 5.5)

              THE STORY
: The Vancouver Canucks used a sensational two-minute surge to earn a 4-2 win in Game 4 and seize control of their Western Conference final series with the San Jose Sharks. Armed with a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven, the Canucks look to wrap up a Stanley Cup berth in the friendly confines of Rogers Arena as they entertain the Sharks in Game 5 Tuesday night.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, Versus, CBC

ABOUT THE CANUCKS: Vancouver led the NHL in power-play efficiency in the regular season - so when San Jose gave the Canucks three straight 5-on-3 chances in the second period Sunday, the results were predictably fruitful. Sami Salo scored twice in 16 seconds, and Vancouver finished the power-play barrage with three goals in a 1:55 span to turn a scoreless game into a comfortable Canucks lead. Alex Burrows added a third-period goal while the Sedins combined for seven assists - four by Henrik and three by Daniel. Vancouver's penalty killing deserves plenty of credit as well, killing off five straight San Jose power plays to open the game.

ABOUT THE SHARKS: When Dany Heatley went off for high-sticking 8:15 into the second, the Sharks couldn't have known what lay ahead. Torrey Mitchell went off for hooking just 50 seconds later and, after Vancouver scored to break the 0-0 deadlock, San Jose picked up a too-many-men penalty after Henrik Sedin passed the puck to an unsuspecting Logan Couture while the Sharks had six skaters. Mere seconds after the next Vancouver goal, Sharks defenseman Douglas Murray flipped the puck over the glass for a delay-of-game penalty and another 5-on-3. Andrew Desjardins and Ryane Clowe scored in the third period, but that was as close as San Jose would get.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: Henrik Sedin has been a Shark killer, recording 10 points (one goal, nine assists) in the series. Heatley remains ice cold with no goals in his last seven games and just a single assist against the Canucks.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Vancouver scored three times on five man-advantage chances and is now 17 for 59 (28.8 percent) in the postseason. San Jose went 0-for-5 on the power play to fall to 13 for 69 (18.8 percent) for the playoffs.

LAST WORD: The Canucks prevailed despite setting a franchise record for fewest shots in a playoff game with 13.

TRENDS: The Sharks are 5-1 in their last six games after scoring two or fewer goals in their previous game.

The Sharks are 1-9 in their last 10 Conference Finals games and 0-4 in their last four games as underdogs.

The Canucks are 5-1 in their last six playoff games as favorites.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Jose Sharks at Vancouver Canucks (-167, 5.5)

Right now the Western Conference finals are telling a tale of two very different teams. If there is any good news for the Sharks, however, it’s that the story is about to end and they will soon be out of their misery.

San Jose has lost six of its last eight games dating back to a semifinal series against Detroit in which the team blew a 3-0 lead before pulling out a Game 7 victory. Vancouver, on the other hand, has won six of its last eight contests dating back to a series-clinching stretch against Nashville during which it won three of the last four.

The Canucks have scored at least three goals in four straight and seven of their last eight. A big reason for the scoring barrage is that the Sedin twins are heating up. Henrik leads Vancouver with 19 playoff points and he has a whopping 10 in his last four games. Daniel, third on the team in playoff points, has two goals and three assists in his last three outings.

Even defenseman Sami Salo joined the fun in Sunday’s 4-2 victory. Salo started the season with an Achilles problem and suffered a groin injury in the previous series. But a recovered Salo notched two power-play goals in Game 4.

“For sure it's been a long journey this year, having a tough off-season,” Salo told the Vancouver Sun. “But we worked really hard to get to this point. It's really exciting. All the years that I've been here, we've had great teams. Just seems this year that the team is really united together. Everybody is pulling together as a team.”

Tuesday will be even more difficult for the Sharks if they face elimination with a banged up Joe Thornton, who left during the third period of Game 4 after a shoulder-to-shoulder hit. Thornton is listed as probable and says he is playing, but he may not be 100 percent.

              Pick: Canucks

MLB run report: Diamondbacks heating up
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in Major League Baseball.

                          HOT TEAM: Arizona Diamondbacks

                          THIS SEASON: 23-23
                          LAST WEEK: 6-1

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Rockies for three, at the Astros for three.

THE SKINNY: Just when you thought those light-hitting Diamondbacks were never going to find their groove this season, along came the dreadful Twins for a three-game interleague set. Arizona blasted Minnesota in three straight, and scored 20 runs along the way. It all adds up now to a six-game winning streak as the Diamondbacks begin a three-game series vs. Colorado on Tuesday.

Listen, the pitching -- minus Ian Kennedy -- has been spotty, and that may continue. But the Diamondbacks have shown a little balance at the plate of late -- Justin Upton has nine home runs, Stephen Drew has 27 RBIs, and Gerardo Parra is batting .283 -- and who knows, if they can keep it up, they could be an outstanding value play moving forward.

                          COLD TEAM: Oakland Athletics

                          THIS SEASON: 22-25
                          LAST WEEK: 2-5

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Angels for four, home to the Orioles for three.

THE SKINNY: Interleague was unkind to the A’s, as they dropped three straight to the rival Giants, and pushed an overall losing streak to five on Sunday with a 5-4 defeat in San Francisco. The pitching continues to hang in there -- the staff allowed just 10 runs total to the Giants -- but the bats have been far too weak to think this stretch is going to stop.

Entering Monday’s action, Oakland had been held to three runs or less in four of its last five games. How bad is it? Coco Crisp led all regulars with a .268 average, and he was followed by Kurt Suzuki (.246), and Hideki Matsui (.234). Wow. But, perhaps there’s some light at the end of the tunnel. This week’s four-game set vs. the Angels reunites the Athletics with a team they just swept a two-game series from last week. In that series, Oakland scored 19 runs.

                          OVER TEAM: Cleveland Indians

                          O/U THIS SEASON: 25-17-2
                          O/U LAST WEEK: 5-2

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Red Sox for three, at the Rays for three.

THE SKINNY: If there’s a team that deserves more credit for its start than the Indians, please let us know. Cleveland, fresh off an interleague sweep of rival Cincinnati, just continues to win games, and dent scoreboards, all while losing players. Last week, two of their best -- outfielder Grady Sizemore and designated hitter Travis Hafner -- were placed on the disabled list. And all the Indians did was bash the Reds up and down, scoring 19 runs and cashing in on two overs.

The schedule gets a little more difficult this week, and you have to wonder how long they can continue to bash without those two slugging stars. But as long as Asdrubal Cabrera (seven home runs, 27 RBIs) and Michael Brantley (.284 average) keep up their paces, perhaps they’ll be OK.

                          UNDER TEAM: Milwaukee Brewers

                          O/U THIS SEASON: 20-25-2
                          O/U LAST WEEK: 2-5

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Nationals for three, home to the Giants for three.

THE SKINNY: Milwaukee has won eight of 10, and the formula of late, has been solid pitching and just enough offense. In other words, keep them on your under radar. Short of a 7-6 shootout vs. the Rockies on Friday, the Brewers have shown some anemic signs that beg your attention. They closed the series vs. Colorado with consecutive unders in which they scored a total of six runs, and have scored three runs or less in five of the last nine, headed into Monday’s game vs. the Nationals.

You wouldn’t think that a lineup with Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder in it would be an under play. But those two stars will always give Milwaukee some reverse value, and keep in mind this: While Fielder (36) and Braun (35) are well over 30 RBIs, no one else had more than 21 through Sunday.

Hot lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Texas Rangers (-115, 8.5)

The Texas Rangers got a huge boost to the lineup on Monday with Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz returning from injury.

Hamilton, the reigning AL MVP, has been out for almost six weeks with a shoulder injury while Cruz has missed the last 17 games with a quad issue.

The club will work Hamilton back into the batting order right away, but he’ll likely DH for a while until everyone’s comfortable with him taking his regular spot in the outfield.

"Will I get hurt again? Only the Lord knows that," Hamilton told Texas' website. "One thing I do know. He made me to play hard and to show off my ability to the fans. That's what I'm going to do ...... maybe just not dive into home plate.”

Hamilton was hitting .333 with seven RBIs in 10 games before he was hurt while Cruz has seven homers and 13 RBIs to go along with a .219 average.

                            Pick: Rangers

Cincinnati Reds at Philadelphia Phillies (-115, 8)

The Cincinnati Reds have finally run out of patience with Edinson Volquez and sent the former All-Star to the minors on Monday.

Volquez gave up six earned runs while walking four in just 2 2/3 innings of Sunday’s 12-4 loss to the Indians, Cincy's fifth straight defeat.

He had some interesting comments after the game too: "I think everybody has to step up and start getting some runs," Volquez said. "The last five games, we've scored how many runs? Thirteen [actually 12] in five games? It's not the way we were playing last year. We're better than that."

They probably are, though they aren’t going to put up with comments like that from a guy who owned a 6.35 ERA before he was demoted. The big question now is what they’re going to do Volquez.

Meanwhile, their offense will come around and we’ll jump on the over for this one.

                            Pick: Over
