  • French Open Pick...KAZ

So I went to look at French Open bets and I noticed Verdasco was a -195 against some guy named Monaco and I thought that might be a decent play. But wasn't sure I wanted to lay -195 on him. So I did a quick search for Verdasco and found these two stories which I pasted below. I'll let you all make your own decision, but I'm taking a shot at Monaco at +155....

One of the better first round matches to get involved in takes place on Tuesday between two players familiar with one another's game.
Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, who has reached the fourth round of the French Open the past four years, will be a little tense about his chances of reaching the same round this year due to a tough first round match-up against grinder Juan Monaco.
Although Verdasco's record and ranking at the French Open is superior to the Argentine's, it is hard to ignore Monaco's 7-2 overall head-to-head series lead over the left-hander, even more significant is the fact that five of those wins were on clay, one of which took place at the 2006 French Open in four sets.
These head-to-head stats coupled with the fact that Verdasco is on an awful run of form - the man from Madrid has lost three first round matches since Miami in March - gives us further reason to be backing Monaco at a tasty 2.64 in the Match Odds market.
Monaco, a consistent base-liner, will frustrate the irritable lefty into making unforced errors.
Verdasco has become more and more impatient with his own ability and I can see this match being no different. Monaco clearly has the mental advantage on the clay over his opponent and it would be silly not to have a little flutter on the Argentine.

Juan Monaco vs. (16) Fernando Verdasco

Verdasco and Monaco will be squaring off for the ninth time in their careers when they meet in the first round of the French Open. Monaco is dominating the head-to-head series 6-2, including 5-1 on clay. He won their two most recent encounters both in straight sets; on the clay courts of Bastad two years ago and last season in Acapulco. This is another big opportunity for Monaco, who has only been mediocre in 2011 but looked solid last week in Dusseldorf. The 43rd-ranked Argentine scored wins over Andrey Golubev and Mardy Fish before losing to Florian Mayer.

Of course, Monaco's chances really have more to do with Verdasco. The 20th-ranked Spaniard has been playing mostly dreadful tennis in 2011. He at least managed to reach the Estoril final last month, but that came in between a first-round exit in Monte-Carlo and a combined 1-2 record in Madrid and Rome. This could be one of the most entertaining matches of round one and it could go either way. However, Monaco should be playing with more confidence than his opponent so look for him to pull off a five-set upset.
