Sunday Night Baseball: Cubs at Red Sox
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at Boston Red Sox (135, 9)

The Boston Red Sox get to shine under ESPN’s Sunday night spotlight for the second straight week. This time, the BoSox are on their home field as they wrap up a three-game interleague series with the Chicago Cubs.

              LONG TIME COMING

Two of baseball’s most storied clubs don’t get together very often, even in this age of interleague play. The Red Sox and Cubs haven’t met since a three-game series in June 2005, with Chicago taking two of three playing at the Friendly Confines of Wrigley Field.

But these two occasional rivals picked up right where they left off in Friday night’s series opener, at least in terms of runs being scored. The Red Sox went haywire en route to a 15-5 blowout victory, piling up 19 hits. The Cubs got some payback Saturday night, winning 9-3 thanks to an eight-run eighth inning.

In the June 2005 series, all three games were full of runs, with the Cubs winning the first two contests by counts of 14-6 and 7-6, and Boston rolling 8-1 in the finale. Six years later, the two clubs are far different. Just look at the pitchers from that series: Greg Maddux, Carlos Zambrano and Glendon Rusch for Chicago, and Bronson Arroyo, Wade Miller and Tim Wakefield. Only Zambrano remains with the Cubs, and 44-year-old Wakefield is still with Boston.

              PITCHING PARTICULARS

Speaking of Wakefield, he’ll take the ball for the Red Sox Sunday, making just his third start of the year. He’s had nine relief appearances and he’s 0-1 with a not-so-robust 5.40 ERA this season.

In fact, if the knuckleballer takes the mound at all, it hasn’t been a good sign for Boston. The Red Sox are 2-9 in games in which Wakefield has appeared, though they’ve gone 1-1 in his two starts which both came in the first week of this month. In a 5-2 home win over Seattle on May 1, the right hander allowed one run on three hits in 5.2 innings, and in a 9-2 home loss to Minnesota on May 6, he got shelled for eight runs (six earned) on nine hits in 4.1 innings.

Wakefield has just six career appearances against the Cubbies, including five starts, going 3-1 with a 3.68 ERA.

Chicago was planning to start Matt Garza, but he is being rested with what the team is calling "elbow tightness." Lefty James Russell, who pitched three scoreless innings Friday, is expected to start. Russell was demoted to the bullpen early this month after giving up at least four runs in three straight starts.

              TEAM TRENDS

After losing its first six games of the season and 10 of its first 12, Boston has rebounded to finally get above .500. The Red Sox had won seven in a row before Saturday's loss, including a three-game road sweep of the Yankees capped by a 7-5 win last Sunday night.

Interleague play has been quite agreeable to the Red Sox, who are on runs against the National League of 77-29 overall and 47-14 at home.

Meanwhile, heading into this series, the Cubs halted a 2-6 slide by sweeping a two-game road series against the Florida Marlins, by counts of 7-5 Wednesday and 5-1 Thursday. But they resorted back to their losing ways with Friday’s blowout loss. Chicago is on a bundle of negative runs, including 2-6 against the AL East, 5-10 against winning teams and 6-17 in interleague road games.

              HIGHS AND LOWS

The Cubs are on several over streaks, including 8-2 overall, 7-0 against the AL East and 8-2 against winning teams, and the over has hit in four of the last five meetings between Chicago and Boston. Still, in interleague play, Chicago is on an 8-4 under stretch.

For Boston, the over is on a 6-1 run when the Red Sox face losing teams.

Hot lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Astros at Toronto Blue Jays (-131, 7.5)

Wandy Rodriguez’s 2-3 record is no indication of how he’s pitching. Houston’s 32-year-old lefty has gone at least seven innings in each of his last six starts. In that span, he’s posted a 2.09 ERA while striking out 36 and walking 10.

He was near-flawless in his last outing, shutting out the Braves for eight innings.

Also note that Toronto slugger Jose Bautista is just 1-for-12 lifetime against Rodriguez.

Blue Jays starter Kyle Drabek is coming off a seven-inning performance against the Tigers in which he allowed one run and just three hits. He did walk six batters, however.

But it’s not like the Astros scare anyone. They rank 21st in slugging (.376) and have only scored more than two runs once in their last six games.

The Under is 6-0 in Rodriguez’s last six starts.

                Pick: Under

St. Louis Cardinals at Kansas City Royals (148, 8)

The I-70 series hasn't generated much offense so far, with the Royals prevailing 3-0 on Friday and the Cardinals winning by the same score Saturday.

Now St. Louis sends out its best pitcher, Jaime Garcia, the lefty who's tied for the MLB lead in ERA at 1.64. He's allowed one earned run in his last three starts covering 24 innings.

Royals starter Sean O'Sullivan is struggling, and he was roughed up by the Indians his last time out. But the Cardinals aren't pounding anyone lately. They've scored just 17 runs over their last six games. St. Louis went 5-1 in that span because of tremendous pitching, not its potent lineup.

Lance Berkman, who leads the team with 11 homers and 35 RBIs, remains out with a sprained wrist. Albert Pujols hasn't homered since April 23 and has just 13 extra-base hits this year.

And the Royals don't figure to be giving away extra outs. They have gone 11 straight games without making an error, tying a franchise record.

Umpire Angel Campos will be behind the plate Sunday. The Under is 4-1-1 the last six times he's called balls and strikes.

                Pick: Under
