Saturday's betting tips: Wind a factor in San Fran, Chicago

    Weather to Watch

An 18 mph wind is forecast to be blowing out to center field at San Francisco's AT&T Park today, when the Giants host the Athletics.

A 13-mph wind is forecast to be blowing in from right field at U.S. Cellular Field today, when the White Sox host the Dodgers.

    Who’s Hot

MLB: Braves starter Tommy Hanson is 2-0 with a miniscule 1.93 ERA over the last 21 days.

NBA: Thunder guard James Harden came off the bench to scored 23 points and grab seven rebounds in the OKC’s Game 2 win at Dallas.

NHL: The Bruins are 20-8 in the last 28 meetings with the Lightning.

    Who’s Not

MLB: The Padres are hitting just .227 against right-handed pitchers. That doesn’t bode well for San Diego, which faces Mariners’ rookie stud Michael Pineda. Opponents are hitting just .207 off Pineda this season.

NBA: Dallas’ point guard tandem of Jason Kidd and J.J. Barea combined for a minus-14 plus/minus ratio in Thursday’s loss to the Thunder.

NHL: The Lightning went 0-for-3 on power plays in Game 3 and are now 14-for-55 in the playoffs.

    Key Stat

The difference in the Thunder’s Game 2 win in Dallas was unquestionably their bench. That was supposed to be an advantage for Dallas in the series. But the Thunder’s reserves outscored the Mavericks’ bench 50-29 in Game 2. If that continues, Dirk Nowitzki better go off, or the Mavs will find themselves looking at 2-1 deficit.

    Game of the Day

Dallas Mavericks at Oklahoma City Thunder (-2.5, 200.5)

    Betting Tips

All three of Reds starter Homer Bailey’s starts have eclipsed the total. Games are averaging 11.7 runs in Bailey’s starts. Bailey starts today for the Reds against the high-scoring Indians.

Trainer Bob Baffert is turning to a familiar face to ride Midnight Interlude in today’s Preakness Stakes. Baffert’s replacing jockey Victor Espinoza, who rode Midnight Interlude to a disappointing 16th-place finish at the Kentucky Derby, with Martin Garcia, the jockey who rode Baffert’s Lookin At Lucky to victory at last year’s Preakness.

      Saturday's six-pack

-- National League teams got off to a 9-5 start on interleague play's first night; totals were 7-7. Over was 5-3 in AL parks, 2-4 in NL parks.

-- Reds led 4-0 in 6th at Cleveland, lost 5-4 when pinch-hitter Carrera, in his big leagure debut, got a drag bunt single for the game-winning hit.

-- With their 10-inning win in Chicago Friday night, Dodgers are now 12-37 in their last 49 games in American League ballparks.

-- Umpire Joe West has been on a crusade to speed up games for a few years now; he worked the plate in Kansas City Friday, and game took 2:17 to play, with Royals shutting out St Louis, 3-0.

-- Bulls-Heat played Wednesday but don't play again until Sunday; why do Mavericks-Thunder play two games during that time?

-- San Jose Sharks held off Vancouver 4-3, cutting Canucks' lead to 2-1 in series, with Game 4 in Shark Tank Sunday.

      Saturday's six-pack

      DDLohaus' Preakness analysis:
Ok, the Derby did reward the bettors; Animal Kingdon paid $40+ and came out of now-where to claim the top prize. Shackleford did well on the front end; much better than the time will show. The track was very heavy and i think his effort was sneaky good. Mucho Macho Man got going late and just missed second. I believe he is getting better and once mature, he is going to be a real nice horse (Travers).
Coming into the Preakness many come back for a second try and a few newcomers. I still do not believe we have a superstar which is why the field is full. The weather has been poor all week and i wouldnt be surprised if the track is demanding again. The shorter distance will offer some relief as will the extra seasoning.

I am going to keep it simple; i still like Shackleford on the front end. I think he will move forward and try and take them from the start. A quicker pace is likely to benefit Dialed In who came home in 47(ish) in the Derby. Of course Animal Kingdom is the one to beat, is a local 'guy' and has had a very peaceful two weeks back at home. He will ship in the day of the race which will allow him to sleep in his own bed (stall); a small but significant little perk. Mucho Mach Man looks like he may be maturing at the right time. If he is not tired, I like his chances. I was hoping the connections would hold him out of this race and point towards the Belmont as the added distance may suit him (as much as a 1 1/2 miles .
can suit anyone) Sway Away is an interesting newcomer and may be ready to fire his best shot. He should not be discounted.

      The Picks

      1. Mucho Macho Man
      2. Shackleford
      3. Dialed In
      4. Sway Away

      The Bets
      $20WPS Mucho Macho Man
      $10WPS Shackleford
      $5WPS Sway Away
$2 Tri Box Mucho Macho Man/Shackleford/Dialed In/Sway Away

      Good Luck

      Danny the Glover's Preakness analysis
Certainly a surprise in the Derby. Even with hindsight I still would not have made Animal Kingdom one of my Top 10 picks but that is what make this so interesting. All week I have been looking to see who else would win the 2nd jewel of the Triple Crown and on paper, I keep coming back to Animal Kingdom. He is lightly raced and seems to be peaking at just the right time. Motion has been beyond pleased with how everything has played out and he is practically running at his home track. He will be there.

However, my pick is the defeated Derby favorite - Dialed In. The last race was the worst scenario for him - a terrible trip where he was dead last and then chasing the slowest Derby fractions in over 40 years. Not what a closer wants. In spite of all this, he picked over 10 lengths from his horrid start and had the fastest last furlong since Secretariat. With a smaller field and what I have to believe will be a more honest pace, I just do not think Zito will allow the same mistake to happen again.

Mucho Macho Man had such a tough trip but he was still coming in the Derby. If he has gas left in the tank and gets a clean ride, I would not be stunned to see him wearing the Black Eyed Susans.

      Newcomers:
Dance City shows a lot of promise and can be guided to a nice stalking pace off all the early speed from the inside. Flashpoint is a mystery after his dull effort in Florida Derby.

      Bets:

$10 Exactas: Dialed In/Animal Kingdom over
      Dialed In/Animal Kingdom/Mucho/Dance City/Flashpoint

Mavericks at Thunder: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dallas Mavericks at Oklahoma City Thunder (-3)

              Series tied 1-1

              THE STORY
: The Oklahoma City Thunder followed up a weak bench effort with a strong one, and now returns home tied 1-1 in their Western Conference final matchup with the Dallas Mavericks. James Harden led a 50-point effort from the Thunder reserves in a 106-100 victory in Game 2. With the series shifting to Oklahoma City for Game 3 on Saturday, the focus will be on which team gets more out of its bench players moving forward.

              TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS: Dallas did well to contain Thunder superstars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, holding them to 42 points - 18 fewer than they racked up in the opener. Yet it was the Harden-led charge from the reserve unit that ultimately did in the Mavericks, who had multiple chances to take a fourth-quarter lead but couldn't execute. Dirk Nowitzki followed up his 48-point performance in Game 1 with 29 points Thursday, hitting 10 of 17 shots from the field and nine of 10 attempts from the line. No other Dallas player scored more than 15 points, and Nowitzki's teammates combined to shoot just 8 for 28 from the floor in the second half.

ABOUT THE THUNDER: Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks took a major gamble in the fourth quarter, playing reserve point guard Eric Maynor ahead of Westbrook. It paid off, but questions remain about how Westbrook - who averaged more than 34 minutes per game during the regular season - will respond to the extended benching. Harden assumed the supporting offensive role in Westbrook's absence, pouring in 10 of his 23 points in the final quarter. That made up for a dismal effort from the rest of the starting lineup, as Thabo Sefolosha, Kendrick Perkins and Serge Ibaka combined to score just 14 points. Maynor added 13 in just 19 minutes.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: Durant had to work for his 24 points in Game 2, getting to the free-throw line just three times while missing all five of his 3-point attempts. Shawn Marion was aggressive on the boards - hauling down six offensive rebounds - but shot just 4 of 13 from the field and will need to be better in Game 3.

KEY STATISTIC: 26-6 - The Thunder's record following a loss this season. Oklahoma City has yet to lose consecutive games in the playoffs.

              TRENDS:

              * Under is 7-1 in the last eight meetings in Oklahoma City.
              * Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
              * Mavericks are 9-3-1 ATS in the last 13 meetings in Oklahoma City.
              * Mavericks are 4-10-1 ATS in the last 15 meetings.
              * Underdog is 10-4-1 ATS in the last 15 meetings.
              * Road team is 18-7-2 ATS in the last 27 meetings.

LAST WORD: "You can’t mess that chemistry up. Coach made a good decision." - Durant on Brooks' decision to leave Westbrook out of the game in the fourth quarter.

Pick 'n roll: Saturday's best NBA bet
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dallas Mavericks at Oklahoma City Thunder (-3, 202)

The Mavericks had been able to stop pretty much everyone prior the Western Conference Finals. But they can’t stop the Thunder.

In its first 10 playoff games, Dallas did not allow a single opponent (six times against Portland, four times against the Lakers) to score 100 points. Oklahoma City, though, has reached the century mark in each of the first two contests. Kevin Durant and company dropped the opener 121-112, but they prevailed 106-100 on Thursday.

A big reason for the Game 2 victory was the bench. Dallas boasts arguably the best bunch of reserves in the league, but Oklahoma City won the bench battle 50-29. James Harden poured in 23 points and Eric Maynor (13 points) was so good that starting point guard Russell Westbrook did not even see the court in the fourth quarter.

“That was a heck of a win for us,” head coach Scott Brooks told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “Everybody chipped in. Our bench has been great all year, and I thought they were very good tonight. I think the 50 points they gave us was the game.”

The Thunder also played much better ball on the defensive end of the floor. Dirk Nowitzki still got his points, but after erupting for 48 in Game and missing only three of 39 total shots, he made 10 of 17 field goals for 29 points on Thursday.

“We were trying to make things difficult for him,” Harden told the Oklahoman. “He's so tall and it makes it hard to contest, but I think Nick (Collison) and Serge (Ibaka) did a great job on him tonight.”

Dallas will have to win one on the road now in order to take the series, and that is a difficult proposition. Oklahoma City is 3-0 (3-0 ATS) in its last three at home, 6-1 (4-3 ATS) at home in the playoffs, and 12-2 (6-7-1 ATS) in their last 14 at home dating back to the regular season.

                Pick: Thunder

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Tampa Bay Lightning (-125, 5.5)

                        Boston leads series 2-1

THE STORY: After scoring five times in both Games 1 and 2 of the Eastern Conference finals, the Tampa Bay Lightning suffered a power outage on Thursday. Tim Thomas is to blame - well, from Tampa Bay's point of view - and now the Lightning must solve the Vezina Trophy finalist in Game 4 on Saturday afternoon if they hope to avoid a 3-1 deficit in their series. Thomas turned aside all 31 shots he faced for his second career playoff shutout as the third-seeded Bruins skated to a 2-0 road triumph over the fifth-seeded Lightning.

                        TV: 1:30 ET, NBC, TSN

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING: After being pulled in Game 2, Dwayne Roloson rebounded with a strong effort in Game 3. The 41-year-old netminder made 23 saves on Thursday. Hart Trophy finalist Martin St. Louis, who is tied for the postseason lead with 16 points, saw his five-game point streak come to an end. Tampa Bay defenseman Pavel Kubina continues to be a spectator in this series after suffering an upper-body injury in Game 4 of the conference semifinals. The blue-liner absorbed an elbow to the head by Jason Chimera of the Washington Capitals. He is technically listed as day-to-day, but has yet to resume skating with the club.

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Coach Claude Julien's club is feeling at home on the road in the playoffs. The Bruins improved to 5-1 away from TD Garden after Thursday's win. After suffering a mild concussion in Game 4 of the conference semifinals against the Philadelphia Flyers, Patrice Bergeron returned to the ice on Thursday. Bergeron won 18 of 28 faceoffs and registered two shots in 19:13 of ice time. David Krejci scored 69 seconds into the first period in Game 3. Little did he know that it would stand up as his fourth game-winning goal of the playoffs, which tied Cam Neely's club record, set in 1991. Krejci has six goals and five assists in his last 11 contests and is positioning himself as a possible candidate for the Conn Smythe Trophy.

WHO'S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Boston's Michael Ryder has two goals and four assists during his four-game point streak. Tampa Bay's Steve Downie started the postseason with a bang by recording 12 points, but he has failed to secure a point in the first three games of this series.

SPECIAL TEAMS: After an 0-for-3 effort on Thursday, the Bruins are now 4-for-50 (yes, eight percent) on the power play in the postseason. The Lightning also went 0-for-3 in Game 3 and are now 14-for-55 in the playoffs. Tampa Bay has also killed off 62 of 67 shorthanded situations.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Bruins are 20-8 in the last 28 meetings.
                        * Bruins are 9-4 in the last 13 meetings in Tampa Bay.

LAST WORD: Boston is 18-8 all-time after taking a 2-1 edge in a postseason series.

Boston Bruins at Tampa Bay Lightning (-114, 5.5)

Tampa Bay dominated Game 1 with a 5-2 road victory, but it has been downhill ever since. The Lightning dropped a 6-5 road shootout to bring the Eastern Conference Finals with Boston to a 1-1 tie before getting blanked 2-0 at home in Game 3.

For the Bruins, goalie Tim Thomas got back to his winning ways on Thursday.

Thomas, who did not allow more than two goals in any of the last three games in the previous series against Philadelphia, saw a total of nine pucks go past him in the first two contests against Tampa Bay. In Game 3, however, Thomas stopped all 31 shots he faced and posted his first shutout since March 29.

“That felt more like a normal game,” Thomas told the Boston Globe. “That was Boston Bruins hockey…. It’s kind of a product of the way the game goes in front of me. I was able to play more under control tonight, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that we played the way that I’m used to. So I felt comfortable in a game like that.”

The Lightning, meanwhile, out-shot their opponents for the third time in as many games but did not generate any real opportunities. Guy Boucher’s squad also got abused in the faceoff department, which has been a telling statistic so far.

Tampa Bay won the faceoff battle 41-26 in the opener, but lost it 41-32 in Game 2 and 37-28 on Thursday.

“I wouldn't say we were out of sync,” Boucher told the St. Petersburg Times. “There's another team in front of us. It's not like we're playing a bantam team that is just going to let us run around and have our breakaways.”

Don’t expect it to be any easier for the Lightning on Saturday, when they try to even the series against an in-form Boston team. It won’t help Tampa that the Bruins have Patrice Bergeron back at their disposal. Bergeron, who had not played since May 6 due to a concussion, logged more than 19 minutes of ice time in Game 3.

                          Pick: Bruins
