Friday's betting tips: Leyland rips interleague play

    Who’s hot

NHL: Six of the last eight meetings between San Jose and Vancouver have played over the total.

MLB: Cincinnati has won eight of its last 10 games overall.

MLB: The over has cashed in on seven of San Diego’s last 10 home games.

    Who’s not

NHL: San Jose is 0-8 in its last eight Conference Final games.

MLB: The New York Mets are 3-7 in their last 10 meetings with the Yankees.

MLB: Kansas City had dropped five straight heading into Thursday night’s action.

    Key stat

.561 – The American League has gotten the better of the National League in interleague play for six straight seasons compiling a .561 winning percentage along the way, though the NL seems to be closing the gap. The AL was 149-103 against the NL in 2003 but then went 138-114 in 2008 and 134-118 last season.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Mikael Samuelsson, Vancouver Canucks – Samuelsson underwent surgery to repair an adductor tendon and a hernia on Thursday and is now out indefinitely. The right wing had been trying to play through the injuries but had been dropped to the fourth line even though he was still playing on the club’s top power-play unit.

    Game of the day

Vancouver Canucks at Tampa Bay Lightning (-130, 5.5)

    Notable quotable

I think this was something that was certainly a brilliant idea to start with. But I think it has run its course… It’s not really doing what it was supposed to...We play with the DH rules. The American League gets penalized, even though the record’s been decent over the years. We get penalized. That’s ridiculous. Totally ridiculous, and they ought to look into it… At some point, I don’t know if I’ll be around to see it, but at some point you’ve got to get baseball back to the same set of rules. – Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland on interleague play. The Tigers visit the Pittsburgh Pirates this weekend and are set as -135 favorites in Game 1.

    Notes and tips

David Toms suffered a tough playoff loss at the PLAYERS last weekend but looks like he’s ready to make another run to the top of the leader board this weekend at the Colonial. Toms went bogey-free in his opening round, firing an 8-under-par 62. “You can let it linger or not getting the end result that you want or just move on,” Toms told reporters. ”I’m just glad this tournament is next because this is one that I don’t have a problem getting up for just because I like it.”

The French Open will be without a pair of big guns this year as Andy Roddick and Juan Carlos Ferreo both withdrew from the tournament on Thursday. Roddick, ranked No. 11, is out with a shoulder ailment he suffered at the Rome Masters. Ferrero won at Rolland Garros back in 2003 but pulled out of this year’s tournament without explanation. Meanwhile, Andy Murray is expected to be fine to participate even though he withdrew from Thursday’s Paris exhibition match.

It sounds like San Jose Sharks tough guy Ben Eager will be back in the lineup for Game 3 against Vancouver even though he took 20 minutes in penalties and was in the box (where he also had another adventure you may have heard about) when the Canucks essentially put the game away in the third period. “Ben Eager is one of our faster forwards, one of our more physical forwards. I think he has the ability to win battles and create scrums,” Sharks coach Todd Mclellan told reporters. “I’d like him to play that game, without going to the penalty box. Simple as that.”

      Friday's six-pack

-- There were seven one-run games in major leagues Thursday; the home team won all seven of them. Visiting team was 6-2 in the other games.

-- Jason Giambi came into Thursday's game 3-26 for the season, but hit three HRs in his first three ABs Thursday, as the Rockies beat Phillies 7-1 to earn a split of their two-game series.

-- Another big night for the unders (11-3-1) as scoring continues to be a problem for many big league teams.

-- Oklahoma City played much better defense and upset Dallas 106-100 in Game 2 of Western Conference finals; Thunder bench was awesome, combining to go plus-58 for the game.

-- Sources are saying the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers have been sold to a group from Winnipeg and will be heading up to Manitoba soon.

-- Bruins went to Tampa Bay and blanked the Lightning 2-0, grabbing a 2-1 series lead. Lightning scored five goals in each of the first two games in Boston, but Tim Thomas stopped all 31 of their shots Thursday.

      **************

Friday's List of 13: Odds and Ends with weekend here......

      13) Since 2005, when it was decided high school kids couldn’t go straight to the NBA, 31 first-round draft picks have been kids who played only one year of college. I’m thinking NBA teams should be allowed to draft high schoolers, then maintain their rights for four years, being able to activate the player at the beginning of any season. Once a kid goes to the NBA, he would be done with college. If a team never activates the kid in four years, he becomes a free agent.

      12) Another part of my rule would be that the NBA team who owns the right to that player would pay for his college scholarship for as long as the kid was in school, thereby lessening the financial burden on colleges.

      11) North Carolina recently signed a recruit named PJ Hairston, who said he eliminated Duke as a destination because they kept misspelling his name on mailings to him. How do you misspell PJ?

      10) Bryce Drew has succeeded his dad Homer as head basketball coach at Valparaiso, making him the third straight Valpo coach to have Drew as his last name. Baylor coach Scott Drew (Bryce’s brother) has also been Valpo’s coach.

      9) Iowa State has six Division I transfers who become eligible before Big X play begins in January; that’s an awful lot of transfers, and an awful lot of blending that has to be done by Fred Hoiberg’s staff this fall. It also means the Cyclones’ squad LY probably got its butt kicked in practice by the transfers on a regular basis.

      8) I’m surprised someone on the Internet hasn’t done a big study detailing how basketball alumni at each D-I program have fared after leaving school. For example, how many play(ed) pro ball, how the ones who didn’t play ball after college are doing in the real world, stuff like that. It would be a lot of research, but the results might be telling.

      7) If you want to buy a $60 ticket to the Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game in Phoenix, you also have to buy a $25 ticket to the Fan Fest; same for the $90 ticket to the actual All-Star Game- in reality, its $115. Leave it to MLB to find more creative ways to rip off its own fans.

      6) Arizona’s Ian Kennedy is 4-1, 3.05 in nine starts this season, allowing 46 hits in 59 innings. Snakes got him in the 3-way trade that sent Curtis Granderson to the Bronx and Edwin Jackson/Austin Jackson to Detroit.

      5) Speaking of Edwin Jackson, his current team the White Sox have been shut out four of last six times Jackson started.

      4) Bartolo Colon has allowed three runs in 14 IP in his last two starts, throwing 190 pitches, 73 of which were swung at. 14 were fouled out, 11 were missed, and there were only 8 hits on the 40 balls that were put in play. Colon is keeping hitters off balance and getting them out.

      3) Field conditions at the end of Wednesday’s Mets-Nationals game were the worst I’ve seen at a major league game; there was standing water on the dirt in front of home plate. You never see that. Mets gave all fans who had a ticket to last night’s game the right to use that ticket to also go to their May 30th game with the Pirates.

      2) Mets have played 7,923 games in their history, but have never pitched a no-hitter. Dillon Gee held Washington hitless for 5.2 innings Thursday, before the other pitcher got a single to break it up. Ryan-Seaver-Gooden-Cone-Scott all pitched for the Mets, but didn’t throw a no-hitter until they left the Mets.

      1) I’m not a big fan of home team announcers saying that a pitcher has a no-hitter going; I mean, there are ways to get the idea across without actually saying it. On TV, it should never be said, because you can show graphics to get the point across. On radio, you have to indirectly say it, but to me, it’s a bad idea to come out and say it, but some announcers aren’t superstitious and will say it.

Canucks at Sharks: What bettors need to know
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver Canucks at San Jose Sharks (-123, 5.5)

                Vancouver leads series 2-0

THE STORY: The San Jose Sharks hope a return to California will put them back on the right track as they host the surging Vancouver Canucks on Friday in Game 3 of the NHL's Western Conference final. The Canucks steamrolled the Sharks 7-3 in Game 2, putting them halfway to clinching their first berth in the Stanley Cup final since 1994.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, Versus, CBC

ABOUT THE SHARKS: Penalties crippled the Sharks in Game 2 of the best-of-seven series. The Canucks scored three times with the man advantage, including back-to-back power-play goals four minutes apart in the third period that put the game out of reach. San Jose let its frustration show, as forward Patrick Marleau picked a fight with Vancouver defenseman Kevin Bieksa late in the second and Ben Eager rammed Daniel Sedin into the boards as the period ended. Eager scored in defeat but was otherwise a liability for San Jose, taking four minor penalties - including one for taunting Canucks netminder Roberto Luongo in the crease. He could be facing disciplinary action for his blindside hit on Sedin.

ABOUT THE CANUCKS: Most figured it was only a matter of time before the Sedin twins began racking up the goals again. Wednesday may represent a turning point for the Swedish siblings, who combined for five points and looked as dangerous as they had in the entire postseason. Daniel had a pair of goals while Henrik had three assists as Vancouver had its best offensive performance in the playoffs since April 23 of last year. Forward Mikael Samuelsson (upper body) is expected to miss the next two games and beyond, which will likely mean an extended look for rookie Cody Hodgson. He won five of eight faceoffs Wednesday night and was a minus-1 in 6:43 of playing time.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: Canucks F Chris Higgins showed plenty of jump in Game 2, scoring the game winner and adding two assists. Sharks F Dany Heatley had an assist but was otherwise invisible. He hasn't scored in five games, and has just three goals in the playoffs.

SPECIAL TEAMS: The Canucks went 3 for 6 on the power play, improving them to 4 for 10 in the series. San Jose scored on both of its man-advantage opportunities and is a remarkable 3 for 3 on the power play against Vancouver.

                TRENDS:

                * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings in San Jose.
                * Canucks are 5-1 in the last six meetings.
                * Favorite is 12-3 in the last 15 meetings.
                * Over is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.
                * Home team is 11-5 in the last 16 meetings.
                * Canucks are 2-6 in the last eight meetings in San Jose.

LAST WORD: "We lost our composure, we got frustrated. When you're second, you tend to be frustrated." - Sharks head coach Todd McLellan

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver Canucks at San Jose Sharks (-130, 5.5)

San Jose is simply running out of gas late in games.

The Sharks have no answer for opponents in the third period the past two weeks, coughing up an absurd 15 goals combined in the final frame of the last six games. In Game 2 in Vancouver, the Canucks exploded for four goals in the third period to cruise to a 7-3 win.

"We've made some mental errors, some mistakes and they've been able to capitalize so we'll clean those things up and we got to get our game going," said Sharks forward Patrick Marleau. "(We need to) play some more time in their end. We haven't really done that yet and if we do that, we'll get our opportunities."

To keep pace with the Canucks, the Sharks must find a way to play better at even strength. The team has five goals through the first two games, but has notched just two during 5-on-5 play. Vancouver has been able to roll four lines at San Jose and the Sharks have no answer for the depth.

Even worse, history is now on the side of the Canucks. Just 13.4 percent of teams that have fallen behind 0-2 have rallied to win a best-of-seven series. Overall, San Jose has lost five of its past six playoff games and has dropped eight straight Western Conference final tilts dating back to 2004.

Vancouver is gaining momentum, specifically the Sedin twins.

After lackluster series against Chicago and Nashville, the dynamic European duo are finally hitting their stride. In the Game 2 win, Daniel chipped in with two goals while Henrik dished out three assists.

"It's very spectacular the way they play together," Canucks forward Alex Burrows said, "especially when they're throwing saucers all over the ice. They're not the quickest or the fastest players, but they're definitely the smartest duo in the league. They just move their feet and move the puck and make plays."

                  Pick: Vancouver

Hot lines: Friday's best MLB bets
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cincinnati Reds at Cleveland Indians (-105, 8.5)

So far, the Cleveland Indians have handled everything the rest of the American League has had to offer in jumping out to a surprising start to the season. Now they’ll try their hand against the Senior Circuit.

"They're one of the best teams in the National League," Orlando Cabrera told reporters. "It's going to be a great test for us. I think the type of baseball they play is going to be a good matchup for us to see where we are in terms of the type of team we're going to be."

So do we. Cincinnati should be able to match the Indians shot-for-shot at the dish - that much is for sure.

The Reds rank first in the bigs producing 5.18 runs per game (just barely ahead of Cleveland going into Thursday’s action) and sit second in home runs. Plus, they’re going to be out for blood against the Indians after being swept by the upstart Pirates.

We expect both offenses to show up in Game 1 of this series, at the expense of Thursday’s starting pitchers, Alex White and Travis Wood.

                            Pick: Over

Chicago Cubs at Boston Red Sox (-240, 8.5)

It has been 93 years since the Cubs squared off against the Red Sox at Fenway Park, so if you think this is just another game on the interleague schedule, you’re crazy – maybe almost as crazy as the oddsmakers who came up with this line.

The Red Sox are on a major roll and have been a great bet at home this season, but there’s no way they should be pegged this high in this type of game with Jon Lester on the mound. Lester has allowed nine runs and as many walks in his last two outings.

"There's a history there -- the same as Wrigley, but it's just different," Cubs outfielder Marlon Byrd told reporters. "The first time I played there, it was a little shocking. The first time, I was looking at the fans, and seeing Manny Ramirez and all those guys, and now I go there and it's time to beat the Red Sox."

You can bet he isn’t the only guy in the Cubs’ dugout with that mindset. At this price, it’s worth a wager.

                            Pick: Cubs
