Hot lines: Thursday's best MLB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds (-200, 8)

Last year, Johnny Cueto had a bit of an up-and-down season.

He finished with a 12-7 record and ended up with career bests in ERA (3.64) and innings pitched (185.2). However, his maturity was also called into question when he was suspended for seven games for kicking St. Louis’ Chris Carpenter and Jason LaRue in a brawl - which spelled the end of LaRue’s career – and he was still prone to giving up big innings.

This year, it looks like he’s getting it all together. He began the year on the DL with shoulder inflammation but looked just fine in his first start of the year in shutting out the Cubs over six innings and then threw 7 2/3 innings in a big win over those hated Cardinals.

Heading into Thursday’s start, he has yet to give up an earned run. Meanwhile, the Pirates had scored more than two runs only once in their last five games ahead of Wednesday night’s action.

We won’t even look at the Reds at this price, but we’ll jump on the under.

                Pick: Under

San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers (-125, 6.5)

You have to figure Madison Bumgarner is in line for some good luck - or at least some support - eventually.

He’s pitched pretty well for the most part this season, holding his opposition to three or fewer runs in five of his eight starts this year, but he’s still searching for his first win of the season.

"He's a bulldog. He's tough," Cody Ross told reporters of Bumgarner. "He's a 21-year-old man. He had a lot of success in the playoffs last year. He's confident he can pitch in big situations. It's a matter of time before he gets out of it, or we score some runs for him. He's got a good head on his shoulders. He's not affected by his record."

We tend to agree. The Giants need to string a few wins together to keep pace with Colorado at the top of the NL West. San Francisco heads home for a weekend set with Oakland after Thursday’s game.

                Pick: Giants
