Mavericks have to come back to earth after sweeping Lakers out of the last round; they can't believe the gladhanders who have them already in Finals. Oklahoma City had tough 7-game series with Memphis- they'll have to bounce back quickly here. Dallas is oldest team left in playoffs; Thunder is youngest. Teams are only 200 miles apart, so travel won't be an issue in series, unless someone's bus breaks down. Thunder is 2-3 on road in playoffs, with two of the games going OT. Dallas is 5-0 at home in playoffs, winning by 2-12-8-11-12 points. Both teams have superstar who can carry them. Key could be whether Westbrook can keep TOs to a minimum and get Durant shots closer to basket.

Tampa Bay scored three goals in 1:25 of first period ending Game 1 of series early on. Tampa Bay has won its last six road games, allowing a total of ten goals. Bruins mustered only four shots on goal in 8:00 with man advantage in Game 1. Lightning are 3-9 in last 12 games in Boston, 5-8 in last 13 series games, 2-3 this season. Boston won four of last five home games, but they better not fall behind red-hot Lightning 2-0.

Smokin' Aces: Hot and cold MLB pitchers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I’ll try to avoid isolating perennial Cy Young candidates such as Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay. Those pricey pitchers rarely boast value when you’re backing them, and let’s face it, fading them is rarely a good idea.

                      Money makers

                      James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays

After posting back-to-back losing seasons in 2009 and 2010, James Shields’ stock was fairly low entering the 2011 season.

He’s certainly proved his doubters wrong, going 4-1 with a 2.08 ERA and 0.96 WHIP through eight starts.

Shields’ turnaround has been remarkable. In 2009 he allowed 239 hits in 219 2/3 innings. Last year, he gave up 246 hits in 203 1/3 innings. So far this season, he’s held the opposition to a .208 batting average, allowing only 45 hits in 60 2/3 innings of work.

He’s also improved drastically in two other areas, issuing only 13 walks while giving up just five home runs so far this season.

The betting marketplace still hasn’t caught up with Shields’ resurgence. Nor has it properly valued the Rays after that horrendous start.

                      Anibal Sanchez, Florida Marlins

The Marlins have been climbing the ranks in the N.L. East lately and Anibal Sanchez has been a big part of their surge.

Sanchez is in the zone right now, having worked 15 shutout innings over his last two starts. In those outings, he gave up just five hits while posting an impressive 20:2 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Simply put, you won’t find a pitcher in better form as we head into the third week of May.

Sanchez has hit a couple of speedbumps along the way. He allowed 13 hits and six runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Astros back in his second start of the season. In his first start this month, he lasted only 4 1/3 innings in a 7-5 loss against the Cardinals.

Still, the upside is much greater than the downside when it comes to Sanchez right now. The same can be said for the entire Marlins team, making this a story to watch over the next couple of weeks.

                      Bankroll burners

                      Gavin Floyd, Chicago White Sox

Gavin Floyd has been one of the streakiest starting pitchers in baseball over the last few seasons and now might be the time to sell high with the veteran right-hander.

Floyd has sandwiched a pair of awful outings around a magnificent one over last three starts. Of course, that strong start came against the light-hitting Mariners at pitcher-friendly Safeco Field. In his other two outings, he was tagged for 16 hits and 11 earned runs over 10 1/3 innings against the Orioles and A’s.

Back in late April, Floyd was lights out in back-to-back starts against the Rays and Yankees, recording 17 strikeouts in 14 innings. In three starts since, he’s posted a grand total of 15 Ks.

The White Sox are playing much better baseball these days, but it won’t take long for the market to catch up with a team that had high expectations coming into the season.

Fading Floyd as a favorite should be a profitable investment, at least for the remainder of the month.

                      Jason Hammel, Colorado Rockies

The Rockies are a complete mess right now, arguably the coldest team in baseball.

Jason Hammel hasn’t helped matters, allowing 10 earned runs in back-to-back losses at Coors Field.

Hammel has never been anything more than a mediocre starter at this level, posting a career 30-35 record to go along with a 4.95 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. He’s been bailed out time and time again by an explosive Rockies offense, but now that the bats are ice cold, he’s in trouble.

Note that the Rockies have scored a total of 17 runs in Hammel’s last six starts - they scored 14 runs in his first two outings this season. Dating back to the start of the 2009 season, Hammel is 5-16 in games where his team scores three runs or fewer.

Until Colorado's offense starts rolling again, Hammel should be excellent fade material.
