MLB Betting: Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees

The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees continue their three-game weekend series at Yankee Stadium with Game 2 on Saturday night in what has to be one of the greatest rivalries in sports. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. (PT) and the game will be broadcast on FOX as well as the MLB Network.

Keep an eye to the sky in this one as there is a 50 percent chance of showers with temperatures in the mid-50s and a slight breeze out of the southeast.

The second series between the AL East foes got underway on Friday with the Yankees 120 home favorites behind Bartolo Colon who was facing Boston's Clay Buchholz. The Don Best odds screen had 9½ runs for the total.

Boston entered the series off back-to-back losses to Toronto, including a 9-3 pasting as a 129 road favorite on Wednesday. The loss left the Red Sox five games behind AL East leader Tampa Bay before Friday's series opener. They were 11-9 at home but just 6-11 on the road.

Pitching remains an issue with Boston. The Sox rank 12th in the American League with a 4.40 team ERA. The offense has improved somewhat since a dreadful start. They are now ranked sixth in the AL with a .256 batting average, but ninth in runs scored with 155.

Adrian Gonzalez leads the team with 29 RBI and seven home runs entering this set in the Bronx. Kevin Youkilis has 20 RBI and David Ortiz has 18.

Boston will go with Josh Beckett to start Saturday's game. He is currently 2-1 in seven starts with an ERA of 1.99 and a 0.88 WHIP. His last time out, he gave up six hits and no earned runs in seven innings of work but failed to get the decision against Minnesota.

Lifetime against the Yankees, Beckett is 11-7 with an ERA of 5.90.

New York was 4-6 in its last 10 games and also riding a two-game losing streak into this series after dropping an 11-5 decision to Kansas on Thursday night as a 197 home favorite. The loss left the Yankees a game in back of the Rays in the division. New York entered the weekend 13-8 at home.

The Yankees have had consistency issues on the mound as well, but have a more respectable team ERA of 3.71. One concern is the health of Rafael Soriano, who remains day-to-day with a sore elbow.

New York is ranked seventh in the AL in hitting with a .253 team batting average, but has done a great in turning hits into runs with a total of 181 on the year, which is second only to Kansas City. Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson have provided the bulk of the production. Each had 25 RBI and had combined for 21 home runs before Friday.

C.C. Sabathia will be on the mound for New York. The left-hander will be making his ninth start of the season and is 3-2 with a 2.89 ERA. He has been bounced around a bit in his last two starts; giving up 15 hits and seven earned runs in 13 innings. Sabathia has had mixed results in the past against the Red Sox with an overall record of 6-6, but an ERA of 3.35.

Boston is 4-2 this season as an underdog. The total has gone ‘over’ in five of its last seven games and is 17-16-4 overall.

New York is 17-11 as a favorite. The total has gone ‘over’ in three of its last five games and is 15-17-3 overall.

Head-to-head, the Red Sox took two of three in Boston earlier this season with two of the games going ‘over.’ The clubs split their 18 meetings a year ago with the Red Sox 5-4 at Yankee Stadium. The total went ‘over’ in 11 of the 18 games.

New York should open as a moderate home favorite with Sabathia on the mound. Even though he has been shaky as of late, look for him to bring his best stuff in this one as the Yankees come away with the win.

Giants visit Chicago Cubs for MLB betting action

The defending World Champions are starting to turn a profit during the 2011 season heading into the second game of a three-game series at Wrigley Field. San Francisco and Chicago will be playing their second of nine scheduled games this year on Saturday night with the first pitch expected to be thrown at 4:10 (PT) on FOX.

San Francisco entered the series as one of the hottest teams in baseball, winners of eight of nine and coming off its fifth perfect homestand of five-or-more games at AT&T Park.

“That’s definitely the homestand we needed,” said Giants starting pitcher Matt Cain.

The Giants have been less successful on the road this season, reaching Chicago with an even 11-11 mark, but have captured four of their last five series away from the Bay Area.

Right-hander Ryan Vogelsong (2-0, 3.05) will be making his sixth appearance (fourth start) for a stout Giants pitching staff that ranks fourth in the majors with a 3.15 ERA. He is coming off his best start of the year last time out, tossing 6 1/3 shutout innings and allowing just a single hit in a 3-0 home win over division-rival Colorado.

Vogelsong has made 11 career appearances (five starts) versus the Cubs, posting a 1-4 record and 7.59 ERA, surrendering seven home runs in 32 frames. He hopes for better times in his seventh appearance (fourth start) at Wrigley Field, producing an 0-3 record and 9.00 ERA.

Chicago has dropped its last four home series since taking two of three from the San Diego Padres, April 18-20. The Cubs will be hosting the Giants for six or more home games for the first time since the 1998 season and hold a 406-383 all-time advantage over San Francisco at Wrigley Field entering this weekend’s series.

The Cubs have certainly put on their hitting shoes before welcoming in this weekend’s foe, out-hitting their opponents in 10 of their last 12 games. Chicago is batting .276 overall, ranking second in the majors, but has just a .227 average with runners in scoring position.

Left-hander Doug Davis is set to make his first career start for the Cubs on Saturday after being promoted from Triple-A Iowa. The veteran signed a minor league contract with Chicago in April. He surrendered two runs on four hits, while walking none and fanning five in 3 2/3 innings of work in the Iowa Cubs’ 13-6 setback to Colorado Springs on May 10.

Davis has posted a 5-8 record and 4.72 ERA in 20 games (19 starts) versus the Giants and last faced San Francisco in 2009. He went 2-3 with a 5.11 ERA in six starts during that campaign as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Bettors will be interested in knowing that the ‘under’ is 8-2 in the Giants' last 10 road games versus a left-handed starter, while the Cubs have gone below the number in 23 of their last 35 Saturday games.

Weather forecasts suggest showers in the Chicago area for much of Saturday with consistent 15-20 mph winds blowing out of the north (in from left).

MLB Odds: NY Yankees host Boston Red Sox

The ’over’ has dominated recent meetings between the Yanks and Sox, 18-7-2.
With no NBA betting playoff games scheduled for Saturday, the attention will be on baseball and FOX is taking advantage with the Red Sox and Yankees in prime time.

The expected pitching matchup is definitely worthy of the spotlight as Josh Beckett will go for Boston while the Yankees send CC Sabathia to the mound.

Check out the odds on this game at *** Global.com.

Beckett has just two wins on the baseball betting season but his overall numbers are excellent. He is 2-1 on the season with a 1.99 ERA. Opposing batters are hitting just .174 against him this season. In his last three starts he has an ERA of 2.08 but doesn’t have a decision. He has been up and down in his career against the Yankees with an 11-7 record but a high ERA of 5.90.

Sabathia also doesn’t have much to show for his good efforts this season. He is 3-2 on the year with a very good ERA of 2.89. He pitched well earlier this season against the Red Sox but still got a loss. In his last three starts, Sabathia is 2-1 with a 3.15 ERA. His career ERA against the Red Sox is 3.35 but his record is just 6-6.

Here are more betting stats for Saturday’s game:

•The Red Sox are 2-5 in their last seven games vs. a right-handed starter.
•Before Friday’s game, Boston was just 1-4 in their last five vs. the American League East while the Yankees were 5-1 in their last six vs. the American League East.
•The Yankees were 108-48 in their last 156 home games prior to Friday's contest.
•The Red Sox entered the series 5-11 in the last 16 meetings in New York and 6-11 away from Fenway Park this year.
Heading into this series, the 'over' was 11-5-1 in Boston's last 17 vs. the American League East but the 'under' was 3-0-1 in the Yankees' last four vs. the American League East.

New York has simply been a team that is going 'under' the total a lot as 11 of its last 17 have stayed below the total. The 'over' was 18-7-2 in the last 27 meetings between the two teams when this series began.

        Yanks, BoSox meet in primetime

        May 13, 2011

        **Red Sox at Yankees**

--New York (20-15, -104) went into Friday’s series opener trailing Tampa Bay by one game for the lead in the American League East race. The Yankees were 13-8 in their 21 home games going into this three-game set with Boston.

--Boston (17-20, -1273) came to the Bronx in fourth place in the AL East, five games back of the Rays. The Red Sox have limped to a 6-11 record on the road.

--Terry Francona will give the starting nod to Josh Beckett, who owns a 2-1 record and 1.99 ERA through seven starts. The Red Sox are 4-3 in Beckett’s seven outings, while the ‘under’ has cashed at a lucrative 6-1 record. The veteran right-hander owns an 11-7 record but a bloated 5.90 ERA in 23 career starts against the Yankees. However, Beckett threw eight shutout innings while striking out 10 and scattering just two hits in a win earlier this year.

--Joe Girardi will give the ball to ace left-hander C.C. Sabathia (3-2, 2.89). The Yankees are 5-3 in his starts, which have seen the ‘over’ hit at a 6-2 clip. Sabathia is 6-6 with a 3.35 lifetime ERA in 16 outings against Boston.

--The ‘under’ is 18-15-2 overall for the Yankees, 12-9 in their home games. The ‘under’ has cashed at a 12-4-2 clip in New York’s last 18 contests.

--Totals have been an overall wash for Boston (17-17-3), but the ‘under’ is 9-7-1 in their road assignments. The ‘over’ has prevailed in seven of the Red Sox’s last 10 outings.

--Robinson Cano has enjoyed the most success against Beckett in the past, hitting three homers and driving in 12 runners in 59 career at-bats. Cano has a .339 batting average with five walks against the righty. New York slugger Alex Rodriguez has a .286 career average versus Beckett with three homers and 11 RBIs in 56 Abs. Derek Jeter owns a .286 average with two homers and nine RBIs in 70 at-bats against Beckett.

--Boston’s J.D. Drew is hitting just .227 off Sabathia with only one extra-base hit (a double) in 22 at-bats versus the southpaw. Carl Crawford has faced Sabathia 58 times and has yet to take him deep. Crawford has a decent .276 average against the former Indian.

The Red Sox are 5-7 versus left-handed pitching.

--Most books are listing the Yankees as minus-130 home favorites with a total of 8 ½ ‘under’ (minus-120). Bettors can earn a huge return in the plus-160 range by backing New York on the run line (minus 1 ½ runs, paid $160 on $100 wagers).

--FOX will provide regional television coverage at 7:10 p.m. Eastern.

        **Giants at Cubs**

--Chicago (17-20, -412) brought a half to San Francisco’s six-game winning streak by battering the Giants by an 11-4 count in Friday’s series opener at Wrigley Field. Ryan Dempster continued his solid work in May (2.25 ERA) after a dreadful April. The veteran right-hander went six innings and gave up just two runs en route to an 11-strikeout performance. The Cubs got their offense from Reed Johnson and Darwin Barney, both of who went 3-for-5. Johnson hit a bases-clearing triple in the seventh, while Barney scored three runs.

--Chicago had lost six in a row at home before Friday’s victory. The Cubs are now 9-12 at Wrigley. They are in fourth place in the NL Central, 4 ½ games behind the loop-leading Cardinals, who had a lead at Cincinnati late Friday night.

--San Francisco (21-17, +253) was clinging to a half-game lead over Colorado in the NL West standings late Friday night, but the Rockies were ahead of the Padres and on the cusp of pulling back into a first-place tie with the Giants.

--Bruce Bochy’s team will turn to Ryan Vogelsong (2-0, 3.05) for his fourth start of the year. The Giants are 3-0 in Vogelsong’s previous outings. He has struggled mightily against the Cubs with a 1-4 record and 7.59 ERA in five career starts.

--Doug Davis will make his debut as a Chicago Cub in this spot. The 11-year veteran has been rehabbing from elbow surgery last October.

--The ‘over’ is 20-16 overall for the Cubs, 12-8-1 in their home games. They have seen the ‘over’ cash in each of their last four outings.

--San Francisco has watched the ‘under’ go 19-16 overall, 11-10-1 in its road assignments.

--The Giants are 7-4 against lefties, 14-8 in games played under the lights. They fell to 11-11 on the road in Friday’s setback.

--As of late Friday night, most books were listing the Giants as minus-115 road favorites. There was no overnight number for the total due to uncertain wind conditions.

--FOX will have the telecast at 7:10 p.m. Eastern.

          Money-Line or Run-Line?

          May 14, 2011

It’s easy enough to locate the MLB standings every day. Just open up any sports page, or click into any sports website worth its salt, and the standings are easy to find.

Bettors’ value won-loss records, too, but there’s a different measuring device most “players” want to be abreast of as well. Money line and run line standings provide an extra barometer for handicappers to consult as they make their daily selections. Shorter-term calculations are going to provide more illuminating as the season progresses, however, so we are providing both full season and one-week numbers vs. the money line and run line.

            Beckett-Sabathia square off Saturday night

            BOSTON RED SOX (18-20)

            at NEW YORK YANKEES (20-16)

First Pitch: Saturday, 7:10 p.m. EDT
Line: New York -125, Boston +115, Total: 8.5

The Yankees host Boston for the second game of their three-game series at Yankee Stadium on Saturday. Josh Beckett (2-1, 1.99 ERA) will get the start for Boston, opposing Yankees ace CC Sabathia (3-2, 2.89 ERA).

After posting career-worst marks in ERA (5.78) and opponent BA last season (.292), Josh Beckett has returned to his All-Star form so far this season. Beckett has allowed 2 ER or fewer in five of his seven starts this season. In his past two starts, Beckett has thrown 11.1 IP, allowed seven hits and no runs. The Yankees have hit Beckett hard in his career, as he has a 5.90 ERA and 1.49 WHIP in his 23 regular-season starts against them. However, showing that this season is a different year, Beckett shut down the Yankees on April 10, allowing just two hits, striking out 10 and walking one in eight shutout innings in a 4-0 victory. After winning on Friday, the Red Sox have now won three of four games against the Yankees this season.

After allowing just 3 ER combined in his first three starts, Sabathia has allowed at least 3 ER in four of his past five starts. Since joining the Yankees, Sabathia is 4-2 with a 2.90 ERA in his nine starts versus Boston. He has dominated the Red Sox at home, going 3-0 with a 0.90 ERA in his four starts against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium, allowing just 13 hits in 29.2 IP. The Yankees have lost a season-high three straight and seven of their past 10 games overall.

Sparks usually fly when Beckett faces the Yankees as his tendency to pitch inside has seen him hit seven batters, which is tied with the Blue Jays for most opponents batters hit in his career. Beckett was roughed up last season in the Bronx, allowing 15 ER in his three starts, totaling just 16 innings while allowing 23 hits. However, this is a new season and I like what I have seen from Beckett. I’m taking Boston, which is supported by this FoxSheets trend:

Play Against - Home teams with a money line of -100 to -150 (N.Y. YANKEES) - where team's hitters draw 4 walks or more/game on the season against opponent starting a pitcher who gave up <=1 earned runs in his last 2 outings. (27-12 over the last 5 seasons.) (69.2%, +19.5 units. Rating = 2*).

Padres-Rockies meet in clash of hot offenses

                SAN DIEGO PADRES (15-23)

                at COLORADO ROCKIES (20-16)

First Pitch: Saturday, 3:10 p.m. EDT
Line: Colorado -175, San Diego +165, Total: 8.5

The Padres continue their three-game series against the Rockies when they send Aaron Harang (5-2, 4.07 ERA) to the mound against the Rockies Jhoulys Chacin (4-2, 2.68 ERA) on Saturday.

The Padres offense has been hot of late, scoring 26 runs and getting 47 hits in their past three games, but have lost two of those three contests. Harang would welcome another high-scoring game from the Padres. The right-hander benefited from some rare early run support in Sunday's 4-3 win over Arizona, as San Diego scored four times in the first inning. Harang got credit for the victory after allowing two runs over seven innings. The right-hander is 4-2 with a 3.70 ERA in seven starts against Colorado, but lasted just 2.1 innings the last time he visited Denver, a 10-5 Cincinnati loss Sept. 6 in which he yielded four runs, four hits and three walks.

After losing nine of 12 in which they averaged just 2.8 runs per game, the Rockies pounded the Padres on Friday, registering a season-high in runs (12) and hits (16). Chacin will try to give Colorado consecutive wins for the first time since April 25 and 26. The right-hander limited the Mets to one run and two hits in six innings Monday, but also walked a career high-tying six, threw just 55 of 107 pitches for strikes and failed to earn a decision in Colorado's 2-1 victory. Chacin will make his first career start against the Padres after posting an 8.10 ERA in three relief appearances against them.

The Rockies snapped their offensive funk on Friday, and that should propel them to further damage the Padres who have not been pitching well, allowing 26 runs in their past three games. I’m taking Colorado to win behind Chacin, who has allowed 2 ER or fewer in nine of his past 10 starts at Coors Field (1.71 ERA in past 10 home starts). This FoxSheets trend also favors the Rockies on Saturday:

Play On - Home favorites with a money line of -150 or more (COLORADO) - poor NL hitting team (AVG <=.250) against a team with a good bullpen (ERA <=3.75), with a starting pitcher whose gives up 5.5 or less hits/start. (51-13 since 1997.) (79.7%, +29.3 units. Rating = 2*).
