    Daily Sports Roundup: May 14

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Bruins and Lightning begin their third-round series in Boston, while the Phillies take on the Braves, and the Red Sox battle the Yanks.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

On the American League schedule for Saturday it's Seattle at Cleveland, the White Sox at Oakland, Toronto at Minnesota, Kansas City at Detroit, the Angels at Texas, Baltimore at Tampa Bay, and Boston at the Yankees. Boston's Josh Beckett (2-1, 1.99 ERA) will take to the mound against New York's CC Sabathia (3-2, 2.89 ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Beckett dominated the Yankees in his April 10 outing, holding them scoreless on two hits over eight innings of work while striking out 10 batters in a win. Lefthander Sabathia was Beckett's opponent that day, picking up the loss despite giving up just one run on nine hits over 5 2-3 innings of work. Sabathia fanned four in the game.

Over in the National League on Saturday it's then Florida at Washington, San Diego at Colorado, the Mets at Houston, St. Louis at Cincinnati, Pittsburgh at Milwaukee, San Francisco at the Cubs, Arizona at the Dodgers, and Philadelphia at Atlanta. Joe Blanton (1-1, 5.83 ERA) will get the ball for the Phillies on Saturday, while the Braves counter with Jair Jurrjens (4-0, 1.50 ERA). Righthander Blanton faced the Marlins in his last trip to the mound, giving up three runs on eight hits over five innings of work in a victory. Righthander Jurrjens took on the Phillies last time out, earning the win after surrendering one run on eight hits in his 6 1-3 innings pitched. Jurrjens struck out two in that contest.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL's Eastern Conference final gets underway on Saturday night, with the Bruins playing host to the Lightning in Game 1 of the series. Boston and Tampa Bay both swept their second-round playoff series, with the Bruins dispatching the Flyers and the Lightning knocking out the Capitals. Oddsmakers have pegged the Bruins as -145 favorites for Game 1 of the set on Saturday night, with the total for that contest sitting at 5.5 goals. Boston is then listed as the -164 favorite to win the best-of-seven series against the Bolts and move on to the Stanley Cup final; Tampa Bay is a +120 underdog.

Saturday's betting tips: Lightning struggle in Boston

      Who’s hot

NHL: The over is 9-3-2 in Tampa Bay’s last 14 games.

EPL: Manchester United is 8-1-1 in its last 10 matches.

MLB: The St. Louis Cardinals lead the bigs with a .290 team batting average.

      Who’s not

NHL: Tampa Bay is just 3-18-4 in its last 25 games in Boston.

MLB: The Houston Astros’ starting pitching staff is working on a 5.00 ERA.

MLB: Minnesota had won just three of its last 14 games heading into Friday’s action.

      Key stat

94.4 percent – The Tampa Bay Lightning have shut down 94.4 percent of the power plays they have faced in the postseason against the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals. Tampa Bay has yielded just three goals through the first two rounds and are giving veteran goaltender Dwayne Roloson a ton of help as the top four shot blockers in the playoffs are Lightning defensemen.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Carlos Tevez, Manchester City – Tevez has barely played since suffering a hamstring injury against Liverpool five weeks ago, but he will be re-evaluated Saturday morning and could play in Saturday’s FA Cup Final against Stoke. The club’s captain and striker has 22 goals this season. Manchester City is set at -120.

      Game of the day

Tampa Bay Lightning at Boston Bruins (-140, 5.5)

      Notable quotable

"When you look at their start, they've played obviously a lot better than what they did in the slow start they got [off] to. The adrenaline will be there. The passion, the excitement about the Red Sox in town, that will all be there." – New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi about the Boston Red Songs coming to the Bronx for the first time of the year this weekend. The Yankees were 11-5 in their last 16 home games against the Red Sox heading into Friday night’s Game 1 of the series.

      Notes and tips

Maybe part of the reason the Pittsburgh Pirates have been competitive this season is they aren’t putting up with guys dogging it on the field anymore. Rookie manager Clint Hurdle benched center fielder Andrew McCutchen on Thursday after he failed to run out a play in Wednesday’s 2-0 loss to the Dodgers. Ronny Cedeno also found a spot on the bench earlier this year for a similar play. "You can't look past it," Hurdle told reporters. "You can't stick your head in the sand. We're a team. I believe strongly (in all-out hustle), and I know our men do, too. Sometimes they just need help with their direction." The Pirates are hovering around the .500 mark as they visit Milwaukee this weekend.

Manchester United can secure its 19th English Premier League championship on Saturday with a single point away at Blackburn. The Rovers still have a lot to play for, probably needing at least a point to be totally safe from relegation and word is they won’t face United’s top goalkeeper, 40-year-old Edwin van der Sar. Red Devils manager Alex Ferguson wants to keep him fresh for the Champions League final beginning May 28. United is set as a -143 favorite with the draw at +235 and Blackburn at +400.

Rafal Nadal will hold onto his No. 1 ranking heading into the French Open. Nadal needed to make it to at least the semifinals of the Rome Masters to secure his ranking and did just that by downing Marin Cilic 6-1, 6-3 on Thursday. Following last weekend’s loss to Novak Djokovic on clay, Nadal is still set as the French Open favorite, pegged around -225. Oddsmakers have Nadal set as a -2000 favorite for Rome Masters semifinal matchup with Richard Gasquet that goes Saturday.

        Saturday's six-pack

-- Pirates are now 2-29 in their last 31 games at Miller Park.

-- If you play golf, you should follow Hank Haney on Twitter; he gives out a lot of good golf tips for free.....its @HankDHaney on Twitter.

-- Travis Hafner smacked a two-run, walkoff HR as the Indians won 5-4 in another dramatic ending. Quite a season for the Tribe so far. Good to see the home fans are noticing; they had a crowd of 33,774 Friday.

-- Bad week for Seattle closer Brandon League, who is 0-4 in his last four appearances, allowing 10 runs in just three innings.

-- Tampa Bay's Jeremy Hellickson had the only complete game Friday night, blanking the Orioles 3-0 on 120 pitches. Four other major league pitchers did finish the 8th inning last night

-- Underdog is now 9-0 when Angel Hernandez calls balls and strikes.

        **********************

Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

        13) At what point do Eldrick Woods’ struggles on the golf course stop being news? If he never wins again, is he news until he retires? That could be 15 years from now. Its been 18 months since he’s won, and seeing as he couldn’t even walk 18 holes Thursday, there’s no guarantee he’s ever going to win again. Sad but true. Just not sure its news anymore.

        12) Detroit-San Jose was first-ever NHL playoff series with six games decided by one goal. Have to admit that fact surprised me.

        11) As of this week, Mets have $66.8M committed in salary for next year, so they definitely can afford to keep Jose Reyes if they want to. I can see them letting Carlos Beltran walk (for two draft picks) or dumping him for a prospect, but no way should they let Reyes go.

        10) Beltran’s three-HR game in Denver Thursday was MLB’s first this season; there were 13 of them LY. AL contenders like the Angels/Bronx Bombers had to take note of that performance, even if it was a mile above sea level.

        9) Francisco Liriano’s ERA before his no-hitter last week was over 8.00, the second-highest ERA ever for a pitcher who threw a no-hitter. Some guy in 1937 tossed a no-no when his ERA coming in was 10.13.

        8) Rumors keep popping up that Larry Brown wants another coaching job; what he should do, if he really wants to just coach, is go to a high school and volunteer to coach there. He must have enough money by now, and working in a high school involves a ton of teaching the game, which supposedly Brown loves to do. No way should he ever get a D-I or NBA job again.

        7) Michigan State-North Carolina are playing a hoop game on an aircraft carrier November 11 in San Diego; ESPN will televise the game. Only problem is if it rains; then the game would be moved below the main deck.

        6) Why do football teams film their practices? Don’t the coaches watch during practice? Seems like an unnecessary way to spend both money and time. Football coaches work ridiculously long hours during the season.

        5) I’m still not happy that Pluto has been de-classified as a planet; if I ever get to the Czech Republic, where the decision was made, those scientists are going to have some ‘splaining to do.

        4) Have to feel bad for Angels’ 1B Kendrys Morales, who broke his leg during a celebration of his walk-off HR last summer; now he needs a second operation and won’t play at all this season. So unnecessary, but that said, I’d feel a lot worse for his injury if the Angels weren’t in the same division as my favorite team.

        3) There are now three different reality TV shows about pawn shops (from Las Vegas/Detroit/Napierville, IL); once we get a reality show from Napierville, its fairly obvious we’ve scraped the bottom of the reality TV show barrel.

        2) CC Sabathia can become a free agent after this season; what if he looks at the (aging) Bronx roster, decides the team is on the down side of the hill, and bolts for greener pastures (and bigger contract than he has now)? What a disaster that would be in the Bronx. After the contract Cliff Lee got last winter, you'd think Sabathia could break the bank, as well.

        1) Movie idea; if its been done please let me know the name of the movie-- a deranged fans kidnap an inept (think Sterling/Wilpon Jr) owner and refuses to release him until the team spends some money on free agents, or at least pays its own players so they don’t bolt for greener pastures. This would work.

Lightning at Bruins: What bettors need to know
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Lightning at Boston Bruins (-144, 5.5)

                    THE STORY
: Do you remember the Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning? You know, the teams who made a clean sweep of the two top-ranked clubs in the Eastern Conference semifinals? The third-seeded Bruins avenged last year's collapse by carelessly tossing the Philadelphia Flyers aside. For their part, the fifth-seeded Lightning have won seven straight games - in 12 days, no less. They completed the onslaught by throttling the Southeast Division-rival Washington Capitals en route to finishing their series on May 4. Now, after eight and 10 days off respectively, the teams will reconvene on Saturday in Beantown to begin their conference final series.

                    TV: 8 ET, VERSUS, CBC

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Boston is making its first trip to the Eastern Conference finals since 1992. Vezina Trophy finalist Tim Thomas (8-3, 2.03 goals-against average) has won five straight to see his career playoff mark balloon to 18-11. All told, Thomas has posted a 10-4 career mark with a 2.26 goals-against average versus Tampa Bay. Patrice Bergeron, who leads the team with 12 points (two goals, 10 assists) will miss Saturday's contest with a concussion. Second overall pick Tyler Seguin, 19, will get the nod in his place. Fellow rookie Brad Marchand has scored in five straight games and seven of his last eight. The 23-year-old Nova Scotia native has a goal and an assist in four career games against the Lightning.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING: Whenever it visits Boston, Tampa Bay skates like it ate some bad chowder. The Lightning have won just three times in their last 25 contests (3-18-4) in Beantown. As for more recent events, Martin St. Louis will look to continue where he left off. The Hart Trophy finalist has six goals - including three on the power play - and seven assists in 11 postseason games. Captain Vincent Lecavalier (five goals, seven assists), Steve Downie (two goals, 10 assists) and Teddy Purcell (one goal, 10 assists) give the Lightning four double-digit scorers in the playoffs - more than any other team. Dwayne Roloson (8-3, 2.01 goals-against average) has posted a 5-2-2 career mark with a slim 1.97 goals-against average versus the Bruins. Acquired in a New Year's Day trade with the New York Islanders, the 41-year-old netminder did not face the Bruins this season.

WHO'S HOT/WHO’S NOT: David Krejci gained a measure of revenge against the Flyers. After missing the final four contests in their epic collapse against Philadelphia in 2010, Krejci collected four goals and five assists in Boston's four-game sweep of the Flyers. Tampa Bay left wing Sean Bergenheim has scored a goal in five of his last six games. All told, he has seven tallies in 11 postseason contests.

SPECIAL TEAMS: After failing to score on its first 31 power-play opportunities in the postseason, Boston has scored twice on its last six chances. A 5.4 percent efficiency rating is no cause for celebration, but considering the Bruins are still playing, well ... it is what it is. For its part, Tampa Bay has scored on 12 of its 45 power-play chances (26.7 percent) whiling killing off 51 of 54 shorthanded situations (94.4 percent).

SEASON SERIES: Boston won three of the four meetings between the clubs this season. After Tampa Bay skated to a 3-1 home win on Nov. 22, the Bruins bounced back with an 8-1 triumph on Dec. 2. Boston then collected a 4-3 road win on Dec. 28 and a 2-1 home victory on March 3.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Home team is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings.
                    * Lightning are 13-32-5 in the last 50 meetings.
                    * Lightning are 3-18-4 in the last 25 meetings in Boston.

LAST WORD: "We both found a way. We definitely had to fight our way into the league and earn our chances, and even then they didn't come at first. I'm proud that we did. I'm proud of Timmy that he did. He battled." - St. Louis, on the path traveled by both Thomas and himself in the NHL. The two played collegiate hockey at the University of Vermont 18 years ago.

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Lightning at Boston Bruins (-144, 5.5)

Something has to give in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference because neither team is accustomed to losing.

Since trailing Pittsburgh 3-1 in a first-round series, the Lightning have won seven consecutive games. After stunning the Penguins, they rolled through favored Washington in a four-game sweep.

The Bruins have won eight of their last nine contests since falling behind Montreal 2-0 in the first round. They absolutely destroyed Philadelphia in the conference semifinals, winning four straight games by a combined margin of 20-7.

The regular-season series between the two East finalists gives a slight edge to Boston. It won three of the four head-to-head meetings, including both at home by a combined score of 10-2. Among the Bruins’ three victories was an 8-1 embarrassment on Dec. 2.

If Tampa Bay wants to continue its own hot streak and turn the tide, it is going to have to solve a nearly impenetrable Boston defense. It’s no coincidence that the Bruins have been playing defensemen Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg on the same line since - you guessed it - losing its first two playoff games. They have lost only once with the Chara-Seidenberg duo dominating inside the blue line. Chara is +11 during the postseason and Seidenberg has six points along with a +8 rating.

In goal, Tim Thomas has been sensational for Boston. He is 8-3 with a 2.03 GAA in the playoffs and he recorded an incredible 95.3 save percentage against the Flyers, allowing only seven goals in 149 shots.

“He was the best throughout the regular season and now in the playoffs he's shown the same,” Lightning head coach Guy Boucher said of Thomas. “It's making everybody scratch their heads about what to do, including myself.”

                      Pick: Bruins

Canucks vs. Sharks: Western Conference final preview and pick
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No. 1 Vancouver Canucks vs. No. 2 San Jose Sharks

Series odds: Vancouver -150, San Jose +125

                        OFFENSE

Hockey bettors have yet to see the offensive strengths of either team produce consistently in these playoffs.

For the Canucks, the Sedin twins have gone missing for wide stretches in each of their first two series, leading to questions of whether they are of sound playoff stock.

For the Sharks, it has been Patrick Marleau disappearing at times. So, in deciding which team has the edge offensively, you need to take a leap of faith as to which group will perform at their peak next round.

The Sharks’ strength comes up the middle where Joe Thornton, Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture not only provide great depth at the center position, but have combined for 29 points. In the absence of Marleau, his series winner against Detroit in Game 7 aside, San Jose has had a huge contribution from rookie Logan Couture (six goals, six assists).

The Canucks’ strength has come from the incredible Ryan Kesler, who seems to be carrying his team on his back. The Sedins combined for 198 points in the regular season but had just seven in the six-game series against Nashville. It’s not as if Daniel hasn’t been getting chances either, with 55 shots on goal - second most in the playoffs.

The matchup of Kesler on Thornton could be the key to this series but hockey bettors should like the depth San Jose has up front.

                        EDGE: Sharks

                        DEFENSE

If there was an area that the Sharks may be worried it is defense, as they have given up an average of three goals per game - ranked 10th overall of the 16 teams in the postseason.

Though the Canucks have some Roberto Luongo moments in these playoffs, they surrendered an NHL-low 2.20 goals in the regular season and are at a credible 2.54 GAA in the postseason.

The Canucks won three of four meetings in the regular season, but three of those contests were settled by one goal (two by shootout), so NHL bettors could expect a close series. Vancouver held Nashville to two goals or less in five of its six games but the Sharks’ attack is far more potent than the Preds.

The Sharks do have a tendency to get sloppy in their own end, which could be a fatal flaw if the Sedins wake up. At least the San Jose defensemen will be ready for an up-tempo style after the incredible speed we saw late in the series against Detroit.

Both teams expect some offensive contributions from the blueline and have been getting it in the playoffs. The Sharks Dan Boyle leads all blueliners with 11 points while Vancouver’s Christian Ehrhoff is second at nine points.

                        EDGE: Canucks

                        SPECIAL TEAMS

Neither team has lit it up on the power play in the playoffs. The Canucks are clicking at 22.2 percent - sixth best in the playoffs - giving them a distinct statistical edge.

The Sharks have been far less fruitful with the extra man, hitting at just 12.5 percent which is 13th among playoff teams. At least San Jose knows it can produce, based on the 23.5 percent success rate in the regular season. But it will need to regain that form in a hurry.

The Sharks have had some issues on the penalty kill, particularly in the regular season when they ranked 24th (79.6 percent).

It’s tough to read too much into the Canucks’ 86 percent success on the penalty kill in these playoffs given the lack of a meaningful threat from Nashville. That’s apples to oranges compared to what they will see from San Jose.

                        EDGE: Canucks

                        GOALTENDING

Roberto Luongo has a .917 save percentage, a 2.25 goals against average, and has two shutouts in these playoffs - so what’s not to like about the Canucks’ goaltender? He even went through the entire second round without getting the hook in the middle of the game.

Well for starters, the Sharks’ snipers are bigger threats than the Predators. Expect San Jose to test Luongo early and often to try to hammer away at the goalie’s confidence. However, Luongo has taken his team to the conference final for the first time which may ease some of the mental pressure.

In the Sharks’ net, Antti Niemi can’t match Luongo’s numbers (3.01 GAA and .906 save percentage) and he struggled earlier in the playoffs as well. But overall, Niemi has less confidence issues after beating the Canucks on the way to helping the Chicago Blackhawks to the Cup last season. In particular, Niemi was stellar in Games 6 and 7 against Detroit, including 38 saves from 40 shots in the finale.

                        EDGE: Sharks

                        SERIES PICK:

As the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, the West has held to form and there has been little to separate between these two based on their playoff performances.

The Canucks need both Sedins and Luongo to be at the top of their game throughout what will be a long series. Thornton and the Sharks have shed some of their playoff concerns while the Canucks still have some work to do.

                        Pick: Sharks in seven games
