Sharks look to even series with Canucks Sunday

    VANCOUVER CANUCKS

    at SAN JOSE SHARKS

NHL Playoffs – Western Conference Finals
    Game 3 – Vancouver leads series 2-1
Puck drops: Sunday, 3:05 p.m. EDT
Line: San Jose -115, Vancouver +105, Total: 5.5

San Jose ended its eight-game Conference Finals losing streak on Friday with a 4-3 win over the Canucks in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals. The Sharks now have a chance to even the series before both teams go back to Vancouver for Game 5.

Too little, too late for Vancouver in Game 3, as it outscored the Sharks 3-1 in the third period, but was unable to overcome the three-goal deficit they put themselves in. The Canucks have now outscored the Sharks 9-2 in the third period this series, something they can look to exploit again in Game 4. Vancouver needs to tighten up its penalty kill, which has been nothing short of atrocious so far this series. The good news for the Canucks is that after allowing goals on their first five penalty-kill chances this series, they have held the Sharks to just one goal in their past eight power plays. Still, a penalty-kill pct. of 53.8 is not something to brag about, and unless the Canucks can consistently shut down the Sharks when they have the man advantage, San Jose can easily gain control of this series. Henrik Sedin is back in full force this series, leading the Canucks with six points (1 G, 5 A).

After succeeding on their only three power-play chance of the series in the first two games, the Sharks knew they had to do a better job at drawing more penalties. They did just that in Game 3, earning the man advantage 10 times and scoring on three. They now are 6-of-13 (46.2%) on the power play this series, after going 7-of-51 (13.7%) during the first two rounds of the postseason. Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau continued their outstanding play this series, as Marleau now has earned points in four straight games, scoring twice and getting an assist, while Thornton is tied with Henrik Sedin for most points this series with six (1 G, 5 A), after registering three assists in Game 3. Antti Niemi was solid when he needed to be, stopping 27 of 30 shots, but the Sharks must address their play in the final period. Dating back to Game 5 against the Red Wings, the Sharks have now been outscored 16-5 in the third period over that six-game stretch.

Now that their eight-game Conference Finals losing streak is behind them, perhaps the Sharks can forget about their past failures in this round and decide to make new history. Game 3 was a good start and I like them to carry that momentum into Game 4. I’m taking San Jose to send this series back to Vancouver tied at two games apiece.

The FoxSheets provide two more reasons to back the Sharks.

SAN JOSE is 23-10 ATS (69.7%, +9.8 Units) against good offensive teams - averaging 29.5+ shots on goal per game in the 2nd half of the year this season. The average score was SAN JOSE 3.2, OPPONENT 2.5 - (Rating = 1*).

SAN JOSE is 34-18 ATS (65.4%, +3.0 Units) against mistake-free teams - opponents average <=4 power plays/game in the 2nd half of the year this season. The average score was SAN JOSE 3.2, OPPONENT 2.6 - (Rating = 1*).

Lightning try to strike again in Game 5 at Boston

          TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING

          at BOSTON BRUINS

NHL Playoffs – Eastern Conference Finals
          Game 5 – Series tied 2-2
Puck drops: Monday, 8:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Boston -155, Tampa Bay +135, Total: 5.5

Trailing 3-0, having been shut out for four consecutive periods, and the possibility of falling behind the Bruins 3-1 in the series, the Lightning found their offense again and five unanswered goals later, find themselves even with the Bostonians in the Eastern Conference Finals at two games apiece. Both teams now head back to Boston for Game 5 on Monday night.

The complementary gang that has been so effective for the Lightning this postseason was back in full force on Saturday, as Teddy Purcell scored twice and Sean Bergenheim pitched in with his playoff-leading ninth goal to lead Tampa back from a 3-0 deficit. Purcell entered the game with just two career playoff goals (both this season), and scored those two goals 1:03 apart in the second period. It was his first multi-goal game since Feb. 23 against Phoenix. Offensive stalwarts, Simon Gagne (4 G, 7 A) and Martin St. Louis (8 G, 9 A) added the last two goals to put the finishing touches on the comeback, that was made complete also thanks to Dwayne Roloson who stopped all 21 shots fired at him after a brutal first period that saw him allow three goals on nine shots. St. Louis and another Tampa teammate who assisted on its second goal, Vincent Lecavalier (6 G, 11 A), are tied with Joe Thornton for the NHL lead with 17 postseason points.

Saturday marked the first time in its long storied playoff history that Boston lost a playoff game when leading by three goals or more after the first period, having won all previous 23 games (however, the Bruins did lose Game 7 of the 2010 Eastern Conference Semis when leading 3-0, but the Flyers scored at 17:12 of the first period to make it 3-1 after one period). Patrice Bergeron, in just his second game back from a concussion, scored two first-period goals for the Bruins and both were unassisted. The last time Boston had TWO unassisted goals in a playoff PERIOD was April 21, 1994 in an eventual 6-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens. It was Bergeron's first career multi-goal game in the playoffs, and his first multi-goal game since Feb. 3 against the Stars. Bergeron leads the Bruins with 14 points (4 G, 10 A) in the postseason. After stopping all 10 shots in the first period, Tim Thomas allowed four goals on his last 26 shots faced. The loss snaps a three-game road win streak and drops Boston to 5-2 on the road this postseason.

Back at home, the Bruins should be fired up, but need Thomas to return to his Game 3 form, otherwise they will be in trouble. So far Boston has managed to escape with one win in three games that they allowed five goals in. If Thomas is unsuccessful at stopping this incredible Tampa offensive attack, then the Lightning will head back home with a chance to go into the Finals. Saying that, I like Thomas to step up and raise his game, leading the Bruins to within a game of the Stanley Cup. I’m taking Boston.

The FoxSheets show this trend siding with the Bruins:

BOSTON is 17-5 ATS (77.3%, +10.5 Units) against explosive offensive teams - scoring 3+ goals/game - 2nd half of the season this season. The average score was BOSTON 3.7, OPPONENT 2.4 - (Rating = 2*).

NHL Betting: Canucks can clinch West at home

The top-seeded Vancouver Canucks can advance to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1994 with a victory in Game 5 on home ice Tuesday against the second-seeded San Jose Sharks. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (PT) with television coverage provided by Versus.

Vancouver is a -170 favorite in Game 5 according to the Don Best odds screen and has never won the Cup after making the final round twice previously in team history.

The Canucks put themselves into position for the clincher with a 4-2 win in Game 4 on Sunday as small -105 underdogs, handing the Sharks their seventh loss in eight Western Conference Finals games. The ‘over’ has now cashed in the last three games after going ‘under’ 5 ½ goals in the series opener and remains at 5 ½ again for Game 5.

San Jose was swept by Chicago in last year’s conference finals and has been outplayed by Vancouver throughout virtually the entire series outside of a scoring burst in the first period of Game 3. Ironically, Sharks goalie Antti Niemi was on the winning end a year ago with the Blackhawks but has stumbled this time around, especially in the third period.

Niemi gave the Canucks a little momentum toward the end of Game 3 despite earning the win, surrendering three third-period goals that carried over and gave the road team a lot of confidence heading into Game 4. He has given up 17 goals in the third period over the past eight games.

Vancouver scored three more times against Niemi during the second period of Game 4, including two power-play goals by defenseman Sami Salo that were both assisted by Daniel and Henrik Sedin. Center Ryan Kesler continued his strong play with his sixth goal of the postseason, converting a power-play opportunity following passes from Salo and Henrik Sedin.

All three goals for the Canucks in the second period came on successive 5-on-3 power plays within a two-minute stretch that simply took the life out of San Jose. The Sharks failed to capitalize on their first five power-play opportunities after converting on their first five in the series, and they allowed the Sedin twins to control Game 4 with a combined seven assists.

The Canucks had just 13 shots on goal and were outshot by 22 yet still pulled off the victory.

San Jose center Joe Thornton had his four-game point scoring streak snapped in the loss and also left in the third period with an injury after getting hit into the boards by Vancouver’s Raffi Torres. Thornton has vowed to play in Game 5 and will need to inspire his teammates in order to extend the series to a Game 6 back home on Thursday. He has a career-high 17 points (three goals, 14 assists) in this year’s playoffs to lead the Sharks.

While Thornton has been great for San Jose throughout the postseason, Henrik Sedin has been even better. Henrik totaled four assists in Game 4 and has an NHL-best 19 points in the playoffs. He and brother Daniel have totaled 15 points between them in four games of this series, more than double their production of seven points in six games against Nashville in the previous round.

Sharks try to keep series alive in Tuesday's Game 5

NHL Playoffs – Western Conference Finals
              Game 5 – Vancouver leads series 3-1
Puck drops: Tuesday, 9:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Vancouver -175, San Jose +155, Total: 5.5

The city of Vancouver will be ready to celebrate on Tuesday when the Canucks have their first chance since 1994 to return to the Stanley Cup Finals. After losing Game 3, the Canucks responded with a 4-2 win in Game 4 to take a 3-1 series lead.

After ending their eight-game Conference Finals losing streak in Game 3, the Sharks had a chance to even the series in Game 4, but fell apart in the second period. San Jose faced three separate five-on-three situations and allowed a goal in each of them. Trailing 3-0, the Sharks were unable to get back into the game and now face elimination for the second time this postseason. The Sharks have not received much production from key players Dany Heatley, Devin Setoguchi and Joe Pavelski. That trio has combined for zero goals, three assists and have a combined minus-7 rating for the series. Joe Thornton will play in Game 5 despite what appears to be a significant shoulder injury that he suffered midway through the third period in Game 4.

The Canucks power play continues to shine in this series, as they scored three more in Game 4 and have nine in the series. The nine power-play goals is a team record for a playoff series. Henrik Sedin set a Canucks single-game playoff record with four assists and tied a team single-game playoff points record with four points. Brother Daniel recorded three assists in Game 4, marking the fifth time brothers scored at least three points in the same playoff game. After combining for just seven points in their series against the Predators, the Brothers Sedin have combined for 15 points in the Conference Finals.

The Canucks had a chance to end both the Conference Quarterfinals and Semifinals in five games at home, but lost both games. Watching Game 4, it looked like the Canucks broke the Sharks spirit. I like Vancouver to win Tuesday and reach the Cup Finals for the first time in 17 years.

              The FoxSheets says:

VANCOUVER is 25-8 ATS (75.8%, +11.9 Units) after covering 3 of their last 4 against the spread this season. The average score was VANCOUVER 3.7, OPPONENT 2.4 - (Rating = 2*).

NHL Odds: Tampa Bay Lightning host Boston Bruins

When goaltender Tim Thomas has played like the Vezina Trophy favorite in the playoffs, the third-seeded Boston Bruins are nearly unbeatable.

Thomas was brilliant again in Game 5 on Monday at home, leading the Bruins to a 3-1 win over the fifth-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning and giving them a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference Finals heading into Game 6 on Wednesday.

The Lightning will be confident though back on home ice, where they are -120 favorites and will try to rattle Thomas for the fourth time in six games. Game 6 is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. (PT) with television coverage provided by Versus.

Thomas led the NHL in goals against average (2.00) and save percentage (.938) during the regular season and is the frontrunner for the Vezina, awarded to the league’s best goalie. But he has surrendered 13 goals to Tampa Bay in three of the first five games while allowing just one in the other two combined.

The ‘under’ has cashed in two of the last three games in the series since soaring ‘over’ 5 ½ goals in each of the first two.

Boston may be fortunate to be up 3-2 when looking at those numbers, although the Lightning have not gotten any consistent goaltending in this series either. Dwayne Roloson had won eight straight games in net for Tampa Bay before suffering consecutive losses in Games 2 and 3, and he was then replaced by Mike Smith after giving up three goals in the first period of Game 4.

Smith stopped all 21 shots he faced over the last two periods in an eventual 5-3 victory, but he could not duplicate that success in Game 5, allowing two goals on 19 shots in his first career postseason start. Lightning head coach Guy Boucher will have a very difficult decision to make now between starting Smith or Roloson in a must-win game to extend their season.

The Bruins have no such issue to deal with despite Thomas being shaky at times. He rebounded to stop 33 of 34 shots in Game 5, including an incredible stick save on what appeared to be a sure goal by Tampa Bay's Steve Downie.

That clutch play followed a monster Game 4 collapse in blowing a 3-0 lead, prompting Thomas to guarantee a series win and return to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1990.

Thomas will likely be the difference again in Game 6 at the St. Pete Times Forum, where he turned in his best performance of the playoffs during a 2-0 shutout of the Lightning in Game 3. Thomas made 31 saves in earning his only shutout of the postseason after Tampa scored nine times on him in the first two games.

However, if he reverts back to the way he played in Games 1, 2 and 4, the Lightning will probably be visiting Boston one more time on Friday with a shot at the Stanley Cup on the line.

Bruins try to punch ticket to Stanley Cup Finals

NHL Playoffs – Eastern Conference Finals
                    Game 6 – Boston leads series 3-2
Puck drops: Wednesday, 8:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Tampa Bay -125, Boston +105, Total: 5.5

On Tuesday night, the Bruins and Lightning watched Vancouver celebrate its trip to the Stanley Cup Finals after defeating San Jose in double overtime. On Wednesday, Boston has a chance to join the Canucks and earn its first visit to the Finals since 1990.

Tim Thomas has now single-handedly won two games for the Bruins this series. Adding to his Game 3 shutout, Thomas stood on his head in Monday’s Game 5, especially in the first period when Tampa came out aggressive and outshot Boston 14-4. However, Thomas was strong, and the Lightning left the ice with just a 1-0 lead after total domination. Taking a cue from their teammate, the Bruins played inspired hockey over the final 40 minutes. First Nathan Horton buried a shot past Mike Smith to tie the game at 4:24 of period number two. Later in the period, Patrice Bergeron did his Pistol Pete Maravich impersonation, with a no-look pass to Brian Marchand who said the only time he saw the puck was when it was in the net. For Marchand, the goal snapped a four-game pointless streak, and his six goals are the most by a Boston rookie in one playoff year since 1988, when four Bruins rookies netted at least six goals: Bob Joyce (8), Craig Janney (6), Bob Sweeney (6) and Glen Wesley (6). Thomas made one last game-saving stop in the final period when he dove and turned away a certain game-tying goal off the stick of Steve Downie. From there, the Bruins locked down Tampa, and when Rich Peverley flipped in the empty-netter with 13 seconds remaining, the Bruins were one win from the Finals.

The Lightning have nothing to be ashamed of after their Game 5 performance. Despite losing, they showed the grit and heart of a champion. They just couldn’t get the puck past Tim Thomas. Tampa is 3-0 this season when facing elimination having defeated the Penguins in the final three games of their Quarterfinals series after falling behind 3-1. The "Big Three" of Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis and Steven Stamkos has combined for one point each in the past three games, so the Lightning could certainly use a big night from them. Mike Smith started Game 5 in net and played well, but Tampa Bay will go back to 41-year-old veteran Dwayne Roloson in this must-win contest. Roloson posted a .941 save percentage in the first two series of these playoffs, but that number is a paltry .862 against the Bruins.

On the other hand, after allowing nine goals and posting a save percentage of .878 in his first two games of this series, Tim Thomas has stopped .950 percent of his shots and allowed just five goals in his past three games. I like the Bruins to eventually win this series, but I think the Lightning have a lot of fight, and I expect them to push this series the distance with a win on Wednesday. I’m taking Tampa Bay to win Game 6.

The FoxSheets show two more trends siding with the Lightning:

TAMPA BAY is 29-17 ATS (63.0%, +11.9 Units) against good offensive teams - scoring 2.85+ goals/game this season. The average score was TAMPA BAY 3.3, OPPONENT 2.8 - (Rating = 2*).

TAMPA BAY is 31-22 ATS (58.5%, +59.4 Units) when playing against a team with a winning record this season. The average score was TAMPA BAY 3.1, OPPONENT 3.0 - (Rating = 2*).

Tampa Bay improved to 4-0 this season when facing elimination when it defeated the Bruins 5-4 on Wednesday in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals. The two teams now will play the first Game 7 in the Eastern Conference Finals since the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Buffalo Sabres 4-2 in 2006.

Martin St. Louis scored two goals and added an assist on Wednesday to give him seven points for this series (4 G, 3 A) and a conference-leading 20 points for the postseason (10 G, 10 A). Teddy Purcell lit the lamp twice for Tampa, marking his second multi-goal game of this series. The Lightning continue to be a scoring machine this postseason, as they now have scored five-or-more goals seven times, and four times this series. After going 0-for-9 on the power play in their previous three games, the Lightning scored three power-play goals in four chances on Wednesday. Dwayne Roloson wasn’t spectacular, but got the job done in Game 6, allowing four goals on 20 shots. Roloson has tied the NHL record for most wins in one playoff year by a goaltender age 40 or older (10), a mark set by Dominik Hasek with the Red Wings in 2007.

Tampa won Game 7 on the road at Pittsburgh in the Conference Quarterfinals, and now will attempt to win another Game 7 on the road. The Lightning will look to become the third team in as many seasons to win two Game 7s on the road. Last season the Canadiens won Game 7 in Pittsburgh and Washington before losing to the Flyers in five games in the Eastern Conference Finals, and in 2009 the Hurricanes won Game 7 in Boston and New Jersey before being swept by the Penguins in the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Bruins held a 2-1 lead after the first period on Wednesday, but were hit with another offensive onslaught by the Lightning, much like the one they suffered through in Game 4 when they blew a 3-0 lead and watched Tampa score five unanswered goals. This time the Lightning outscored the Bruins 4-2, thanks to Boston allowing three power-play goals. Boston had gone nine straight games without allowing more than one goal in a game on the penalty-kill. After shutting out the Lightning in Game 3, Tim Thomas has allowed nine goals on 62 shots in the two games at Tampa. David Krejci had a hat trick (goals 8, 9, 10) for the Bruins, their 1st playoff hat trick since Cam Neely on April 25, 1991. Krejci’s hat trick was only the fourth by an NHL player in a Conference Final game over the past 13 playoff years. The Bruins will be playing in two Game 7s in a single playoff year for the first time in team history. They had lost their previous four Game 7s before they won against the Canadiens this year in the Conference Quarterfinals.

One team will be left standing and making a trip to Vancouver for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Wednesday. Boston is 10-10 all-time in Game 7s, while Tampa is a perfect 3-0 (the most wins in Game 7 without a loss in NHL postseason history), so the numbers are on Tampa’s side. However, games like this usually come down to better goaltending. The Lightning have done more than any team I’ve seen since the mid-1980’s Edmonton Oilers at consistently scoring in the postseason, so while Thomas holds the advantage over Roloson, it’s a very slight advantage. However, Boston is at home and seems to be playing with a bit of good karma this postseason. They overcame a 2-0 deficit losing the first two games at home against the Canadiens and won the series. Despite allowing five goals four times this series, they still are preparing for a Game 7. Something tells me that the breaks will fall their way and they will make the trip to Vancouver. I’m taking Boston to win and advance to the Finals for the first time since 1990.

                        The FoxSheets says:

BOSTON is 18-6 ATS (75.0%, +10.3 Units) against explosive offensive teams - scoring 3+ goals/game - 2nd half of the season this season. The average score was BOSTON 3.7, OPPONENT 2.4 - (Rating = 2*).

BOSTON is 24-12 ATS (66.7%, +7.3 Units) against good passing teams - averaging 5 or more assists per game this season. The average score was BOSTON 3.5, OPPONENT 2.3 - (Rating = 1*).

NHL Betting: Boston Bruins, Lightning Game 7

The Eastern Conference Championship and a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals are on the line this Friday night at the TD Garden when the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Boston Bruins wrap up their best-of-seven series with a winner-take-all Game 7. The puck drops at 5:30 p.m. (PT) and the game will be broadcast nationally on VERSUS.

Tampa Bay took full advantage of the power play to grind out a 5-4 victory on Wednesday night as a 125 home favorite to take this series to the limit. It scored two goals in the second period and one early in the third with a one-man advantage to help force a Game 7. The Lightning are now 11-6 overall in the postseason and 6-3 on the road. They are 7-3 as an underdog and the total has gone ‘over’ in ten of the 17 games.

Boston opened as the 150 favorite in Game 7. The Don Best odds screen lists 5½ for the total and shaded to the 'under.'

The stars were out for the Lightning on Wednesday night with Martin St. Louis and Teddy Purcell each scoring twice and Vincent LeCavalier adding two assists in the winning effort. These three have now combined for 22 goals and 56 total points in the postseason. Steve Downie and Steven Stamkos also came up big with a combined one goal and three assists for the highest scoring team in this year’s playoffs.

Tampa’s recent revolving door at goalie spun back to Dwayne Roloson for Game 6 and while he did give up four goals on 20 shots, he stood tall in net to hold off a furious Boston attack at the end of the third period to preserve the win. His performance should earn him the start on Friday, but Tampa Bay also has Mike Smith waiting in the wings.

The pressure in this game falls back on Boston, which is in danger of getting eliminated after blowing a series lead for the second year in-a-row. It had a 2-1 and 3-2 lead in this series but could not maintain the edge. The Bruins are now 11-6 overall this postseason and 6-3 at home. They are 8-4 as a favorite and the total has gone ‘over’ in 10 of the 17 games.

You cannot blame Wednesday’s loss on David Krejci. The center recorded a rare playoff hat-trick to keep the Bruins in this game. He now has 10 postseason goals and along with Nathan Horton, leads the team with a total of 16 points. Boston will also look to Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand, who have also been a big part of the offense with a combined 27 points, to come up big on Friday night.

The outcome of Game 7 could very well rest on the shoulders of Boston goalie Tim Thomas. He came into this series with a stellar goals-against-average of 2.03 and a .937 save percentage, but has given up five goals in four of the six games. To his credit, he held the Lightning to one goal on 65 shots in the other two.

Past trends do not favor the Lightning in this game as they are 16-35-5 in their last 56 games against the Bruins and 4-20-4 in their last 28 games in Boston. Both teams have already won a Game 7 this postseason, but this one will come down to the Bruins’ ability to keep Tampa Bay’s big guns in check as they did twice before in this series. Stick with Boston and Thomas to get the job done one more time to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals.
