Sharks try to even series with Canucks

    SAN JOSE SHARKS

    at VANCOUVER CANUCKS

NHL Playoffs – Western Conference Finals
    Game 2 – Vancouver leads series 1-0
Puck drops: Wednesday, 9:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Vancouver -155, San Jose +135, Total: 5.5

For the third straight series, the Canucks drew first blood and jumped out to a 1-0 lead. After winning their first four road playoff games, the Sharks have now lost three straight away from home, and four of five overall after taking a 3-0 lead in their series against Detroit.

San Jose could not hold a third-period lead for the third time in its past four games, allowing the Canucks to rally down 2-1 to score two unanswered goals and win 3-2. After going without a goal for seven straight games, Patrick Marleau scored a goal for the second straight game on Sunday. Thanks to a puck-handling gaffe by Roberto Luongo, Joe Thornton snapped a seven-game skid without a goal by tallying the Sharks first goal of the series. Despite the loss, the chatter around the locker room was about the performance of Antti Niemi who made 35 saves on 38 shots, most of them the spectacular kind. Yes, he lost the game, but Niemi’s heroics stopped this game from being a rout. If Niemi repeats his performance in Game 2, the Sharks have a great shot at tying the series.

Vancouver is now in the Conference Finals of its championship push and perhaps the most important piece of the title run is taking place off the ice. Manny Malhotra remains a longshot -- some believe no shot -- to play for the Canucks again this season after nearly losing his vision and his hockey career to a deflected puck that struck his eye in mid-March. That has not, however, prevented many from wondering aloud why he suddenly returned to the ice, first by himself and then with teammates, early in practice during the week leading up to the Western Conference final. Whether or not a miraculous comeback is possible, there is little question his attempted return has helped the Canucks. In addition to an emotional boost, Vancouver's coaching staff picked Malhotra's brain about his former Sharks team. The Canucks dominated the play in Game 1, and only an outstanding performance by Niemi stopped that from showing up in the box score. After registering just one point in his previous seven games, Henrik Sedin has risen from the ashes in his past four games, totaling six points, including the GW goal and an assist in Game 1. While Niemi got much of the praise in net, Luongo continued his Conn Smythe-worthy performance in Game 1, stopping 27 of the 29 shots. After getting pulled in Game 5 against Chicago in the Quarterfinals, Luongo has posted a 1.67 GAA and a save percentage of .937.

Henrik Sedin’s game-winning, power-play goal was just the second PPG for the Canucks this postseason at home and snapped an 0-for-17 drought at home with the man advantage. While that doesn’t mean the Canucks are back to their regular-season form that saw them score the most PPG in the NHL, it’s a positive sign for a team that has still managed to win despite not consistently putting the puck in net. After scoring four or more goals in a game 35 times during the regular season, Vancouver has done so just twice in the postseason.

San Jose has now lost seven straight Conference Finals games after its Game 1 loss, which is just two shy of tying the Bruins record of nine straight Conference Finals losses which ended Tuesday night. Game 1 was the eighth time in the past nine games that a San Jose was decided by one goal. The Sharks righted their ship just in time to defeat the Red Wings, but that might have taken a lot out of them, as they continue to falter in the third period of games, which is a sign of fatigue. They have been outscored 9-3 in third period in their past four games. However, I still believe the Sharks are dangerous, and as long as Niemi continues to play well, they have enough offensive firepower to put pressure on their opponent. I like San Jose to tie the series and win Game 2.

These two FoxSheets trends also side with the Sharks:

SAN JOSE is 77-48 ATS (61.6%, +127.0 Units) in road games after having lost 4 or 5 of their last 6 games since 1996. The average score was SAN JOSE 2.8, OPPONENT 2.5 - (Rating = 2*).

VANCOUVER is 2-11 ATS (15.4%, -19.5 Units) in home games when leading in a playoff series since 1996. The average score was VANCOUVER 1.7, OPPONENT 3.2 - (Rating = 3*).

NHL Odds: Boston Bruins travel to Tampa Bay

The third-seeded Boston Bruins found a way to even the Western Conference Finals at 1-1 with a 6-5 win over the fifth-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 2 on Tuesday thanks to a monster second period led by rookie center Tyler Seguin.

The Bruins are now hoping to get another boost with the possible return of center Patrice Bergeron, who has been out since May 6 due to a concussion.

The way Seguin is playing though, Bergeron might not be needed as the teams head to Tampa Bay for Game 3 on Thursday. Game time is 5:00 p.m. (PT) with television coverage provided by Versus.

The Lightning are listed as -135 favorites according to the Don Best odds screen with the total again set at 5½. Boston was a -150 favorite in Game 2 and saw the total sail ‘over’ 5½ goals for the second straight time.

The Bruins trailed 2-1 after the first period but erupted for five goals in the second, with Seguin scoring twice and adding two assists. Keep in mind that Seguin was inactive in the playoffs until Game 1 of this series, when he had a goal and an assist in a 5-2 loss.

The second overall pick in last year’s draft was called upon only because Bergeron’s status remains up in the air, although he has improved and could still see action. The move could not have turned out any better, as Seguin has done his damage despite getting a little more than 20 minutes of ice time combined in the two games.

With 18 goals scored between the teams through the first two games, goaltending is becoming a concern and will likely end up being the difference in this series. Boston goalie Tim Thomas led the NHL in goals against average (2.00) and save percentage (.938) during the regular season, but he has stopped just 65 of 74 shots so far (.878).

Thomas had not given up more than three goals in any of the previous seven games, going 6-1 during that stretch.

Meanwhile, Dwayne Roloson had been outstanding in net for the Lightning before surrendering all six goals on 27 shots in Game 2. Roloson had won eight games in a row and gave up 25 goals total in the team’s first 12 playoff games.

He was benched in favor of Mike Smith for the third period and will likely be very motivated to bounce back in Game 3.

Scoring first has also been a key to Tampa’s success even though it did not work out in Game 2. The Lightning have lit the lamp first in seven consecutive games and are 8-1 under that scenario in the postseason. Another quick start could be just what Roloson needs to get back on track.

NHL Betting: San Jose Sharks trail Canucks 2-0

The top-seeded Vancouver Canucks could not solve goaltender Antti Niemi last year when he was in the midst of leading the Chicago Blackhawks to the Stanley Cup.

This year, the Canucks have absolutely dominated Niemi through two games of the Western Conference Finals en route to a 2-0 series lead against the second-seeded San Jose Sharks.

Vancouver won Game 2 in a 7-3 rout as a -160 favorite and looks to carry that momentum to San Jose for Game 3 on Friday. The total easily went ‘over’ 5½ goals after staying ‘under’ in Game 1.

The Sharks are -135 favorites in Game 3 according to the Don Best odds screen, and the total is once again set at 5½. Game 3 starts at 6:00 p.m. (PT) with television coverage provided by Versus

San Jose hopes home ice will help it get back in this series after dropping six straight games in the Western Conference Finals dating back to last year, and five of six in this postseason. The Sharks will need to keep their cool and stay focused after tempers flared at the end of Game 2.

The Canucks have doubled up San Jose 10-5 through two games, doing most of their damage against Niemi in the third period when he has struggled. Niemi has allowed 13 goals in the third period over the past six games.

Vancouver has scored nearly half of the goals in the final period, including four within a nine-minute stretch in Game 2. Niemi was peppered with 38 shots for the second consecutive game and fell to 7-7 in the postseason with the loss.

Daniel Sedin scored two power-play goals to lead the Canucks offensively in Game 2 while twin brother Henrik tallied three assists. Their other teammates who registered multiple points included defenseman Daniel Bieska (one goal and one assist) and winger Chris Higgins (one goal and two assists).

The Sharks still have not gotten any production from winger Ryane Clowe in this series, unless you count penalty minutes. Clowe was the team’s leading scorer in the playoffs heading into the Western Conference Finals with 13 points (four goals and nine assists), but he has been shut down so far through the first two games.

His frustrations got the best of him in the third period when he picked up penalties for roughing and misconduct at 14:40 with the Canucks leading 6-2.

San Jose winger Ben Eager got into even more trouble with five minor penalties and a 10-minute misconduct, although he did score the team’s third and final goal in the last minute of the game. Even Sharks veteran Patrick Marleau got into the action when he was involved in his first fight in five years, dropping his gloves against Bieska and losing badly.

The keys for the Sharks in Game 3 will be keeping their composure and keeping pucks away from Niemi and out of the goal.

Canucks look to take 3-0 series lead in San Jose

NHL Playoffs – Western Conference Finals
              Game 3 – Vancouver leads series 2-0
Puck drops: Friday, 9:05 p.m. EDT
Line: San Jose -130, Vancouver +110, Total: 5.5

Each team that wins a championship usually has a moment during its run where everything just clicks, and things that were very hard suddenly become too easy. That is what happened to the Canucks in their 7-3 Game 2 win on Wednesday. The teams now head to San Jose for Game 3 on Friday night, with Vancouver holding a 2-0 series lead.

With their loss in Game 2, the Sharks have now dropped eight Conference Finals games, one shy of the NHL record held by the Boston Bruins. Since taking a 3-0 lead on the Red Wings in their Conference Semifinals series, the Sharks have now lost five of six games. San Jose continued its third-period meltdowns in Game 2, allowing four goals, and has now been outscored 13-4 in the final period over the past five games. Trailing 3-2 with 12 minutes remaining, the Sharks imploded, giving up four goals in the next nine minutes to watch the game go up in flames. After combining for 24 points (10 G, 14 A) in the first two rounds of the postseason, Logan Couture and Ryane Clowe have combined for just one goal this series, while Devin Setoguchi, who scored five goals in the first two rounds, has also gone without a point. Antti Niemi is in danger of losing his first playoff series after going 6-0 so far in his career. He has also been awful in the first two games, posting a GAA of 5.08 and a save percentage of .868. One bright side for the Sharks through the first two games has been their power play. They are 3-for-3 with the man advantage in this series, and need to work to get more chances so they can have the opportunity to score more goals.

After struggling at times to find their groove in the first two round of the postseason, the Canucks have finally gotten everything together. Averaging just 2.31 goals per game in the first two rounds, the Canucks have scored 10 goals in the first two games of this series. The Brothers Sedin have found their mojo again, totaling three goals and four assists in this series. After scoring just two goals in his previous 10 games, Daniel scored two goals in Game 2. Vancouver is getting production from its entire team this series as 14 different players have registered at least a point, and 10 players have at least two points. The Canucks power play seems to be back this series, going 4-for-11 with the man advantage after going scoreless in their previous 17 power-play chances at home.

Canucks forward Mikael Samuelsson recently underwent surgery to repair his adductor tendon and sports hernia. He will be out for the rest of the playoffs. … Sharks defenseman Jason Demers has been scratched for the first two games of the conference finals, though the team has not confirmed it's injury-related. Demers played all 13 games in the first two rounds.

The Sharks come home with their backs against the wall and in desperate need of a win. With the home crowd behind them, expect San Jose to really push the tempo and try to attract more penalties. I thought this series would be a lengthy one at the start, and I still feel the Sharks will be heard from before it’s over. I’m taking San Jose to win Game 3.

The FoxSheets give another reason to back the Sharks.

SAN JOSE is 18-4 ATS (+11.6 Units) after a blowout loss by 3 goals or more in their previous game over the last 2 seasons. The average score was SAN JOSE 3.5, OPPONENT 2.3 - (Rating = 2*).

                  Sharks try to regain composure

                  May 19, 2011

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - The San Jose Sharks lost more than the first two games in the Western Conference final during a lost trip to Vancouver. They also lost their composure.

If the Sharks are going to find a way to battle back into this series when it shifts to San Jose for Game 3 on Friday night, they will have to stay out of the penalty box and get back to the hard work that helped them win the first two rounds.

It's a scenario that is familiar to the Canucks, who blamed a lack of composure for their own second-round exit against Chicago a year ago and are enjoying watching their opponent unravel for a change.

San Jose got called for 44 minutes in penalties in the final 21 minutes of a 7-3 loss in Game 3. They allowed three power-play goals overall as they struggled to keep up with the high-flying Canucks.

NHL Odds: Boston Bruins up 2-1 at Tampa Bay Lightning

Tim Thomas rejected all 31 Lightning shots in the 2-0 Game 3 win.
After two high-scoring games that soared ‘over’ the total of 5½ goals, the third-seeded Boston Bruins blanked the fifth-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning 2-0 on the road Thursday in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals behind the strong goaltending of Tim Thomas.

The Lightning will look to even the best-of-seven series at 2-2 on Saturday in Game 4 by blitzing Thomas like they did in scoring 10 goals against him during the first two games at Boston.

Game time is 10:30 a.m. (PT) with television coverage provided by NBC. Tampa Bay is a -125 favorite according to the Don Best odds screen with the total set at 5½ for the fourth straight game in the series.

The Bruins closed as +105 underdogs in Game 3 and hope to earn another victory here with a potential clinching opportunity back at home on Monday.

The Lightning took 31 shots on Thomas in Game 3 after peppering him with 74 combined in the first two. They outshot Boston 25-13 in the first and third periods yet the Bruins were the team to score a goal in each of them.

Thomas was simply too good in net and played like the Vezina Trophy favorite following two sub-par performances to open the series.

Center David Krejci got the B’s on the board at 1:09 of the first period with his seventh goal of the postseason and then defenseman Andrew Ference provided the final tally of the game at 8:12 of the third. They improved to 7-0 in the playoffs when scoring the first goal of the game.

The biggest story of the game for Boston besides the stellar play of Thomas was the return of center Patrice Bergeron from a concussion suffered in Game 4 against Philadelphia in the conference semis. Bergeron gave his teammates an emotional lift and has now played in six straight wins and nine of 10 since the Bruins trailed Montreal 0-2 in the quarterfinals.

Tampa Bay will look to leading goal scorer Steven Stamkos to bounce back after being held without a point for the third time in four games. Stamkos scored 45 goals during the regular season but has been held in check during the playoffs with just nine points (five goals and four assists), ranking seventh on the team to go along with a plus-minus rating of -3.

He scored one goal and had two assists in a 6-5 loss in Game 2 for his only points of the series.

Goalie Dwayne Roloson stopped 23 of 25 shots for the Lightning in Game 3 and lost for the second straight time after winning eight in a row. Roloson performed much better than he did when he surrendered all six goals in Game 2 but still needs to improve his play if his team is going to tie up the series with a Game 4 victory.

The Bruins and Lightning continue their series on Saturday after Boston took a 2-1 lead by winning Game 3. After winning eight straight games, Tampa Bay has now lost two straight and faces a series deficit for the first time since being down 3-2 in the Conference Quarterfinals.

The Bruins are now just two wins away from advancing to their first Stanley Cup Finals appearance since 1990. After allowing 10 goals in the first two games, Tim Thomas stopped all 31 shots he faced in Game 3 to record his second career playoff shutout. Thomas’ shutout was only the third road playoff shutout for Boston in the past 35 years. The others were both by Byron Dafoe, in first-round games at Washington in 1998 and at Carolina in 1999. Six different Bruins registered a point in their Game 3 win, with David Krejci scoring his team-leading seventh playoff goal 69 seconds into the game. Boston has now won five of its six road games this postseason, allowing 2.2 goals per game. Patrice Bergeron also returned to the lineup after missing the first two games of the series with a mild concussion.

The Lightning lost for the third time in six home games in Game 3, compared to winning six of eight road games this postseason. After averaging 4.3 goals per game in their previous nine games, Tampa was held scoreless in Game 3 for the second time this postseason. Sean Bergenheim is tied for the NHL lead for most goals this postseason with eight, but now has gone consecutive games without scoring since going goal-less in the Lightning’s first three playoff games this postseason. Tampa has plenty of players that have performed well this postseason offensively, so the Lightning are hoping Game 3 was just a minor bump in the road.

After giving up six goals in Game 2, Dwayne Roloson returned to form in Game 3, allowing just two goals on 25 shots. Tampa has too many offensive players to be kept down consistently this series, but Thomas is one of the few goaltenders who can keep the puck out of the net even if they are playing well. However, I like Tampa Bay to be one goal better than Boston in Game 3 and tie this series.

This four-star FoxSheets trend also sides with the Lightning:

TAMPA BAY is 14-3 ATS (82.4%, +10.6 Units) revenging 2 consecutive losses to opponent as a favorite this season. The average score was TAMPA BAY 3.3, OPPONENT 2.2 - (Rating = 4*).

NHL Betting: San Jose Sharks, Canucks Game 4

It wasn't the prettiest game in the world, but the San Jose Sharks were able to topple the Vancouver Canucks in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals to keep their season from moving to the brink of elimination.

San Jose was a minus 113 favorite on the closing NHL odds, and was able to just narrowly avoid blowing leads of 3-0 and 4-1 to hold on to the 4-3 final score.

Now, the two teams are set to do battle once again at HP Pavilion on Sunday afternoon, with the puck dropping at 12:00 (PT). NBC will have live national coverage of the duel.

The trick to this entire series thus far has been staying out of the penalty box. Only bad things are happening to the team that puts too many men in the "Sin Bin."

San Jose ended up taking the game's first three penalties in Game 1, but lived to tell about them all. Vancouver finally ended up in the penalty box, and within a minute Patrick Marleau found the back of the net.

The game-winning goal in that game, though? Henrik Sedin on the power play thanks to the elbowing infraction by Dany Heatley.

Game 2 saw the Sharks put up two goals on the power play, while Daniel Sedin also struck in the first period. It was the two power-play goals at the start of the third for Vancouver that proved to be the difference makers though, as strikes by Chris Higgins and Daniel Sedin respectively turned what was once a 3-2 lead and made it an unassailable 5-2 advantage.

There were 20 penalties in that game, 13 of which were served by Sharks.

Finally in Game 3, turnabout was fair play for San Jose. The Sharks scored twice again with the man advantage in the first period, Marleau and Ryane Clowe doing the deeds, and it was a power-play goal at 6:46 of the third period by Dan Boyle that stretched the lead out to three goals. A major boarding penalty to Jamie McGinn – one of the nastiest hits that we've seen in the playoffs, mind you – proved to nearly bring the Canucks back, though.

Both Dan Hamhuis and Kevin Bieksa scored during that five-minute man advantage, but Vancouver was never able to capitalize for that third goal to tie the game up.

There also seems to have been a bitter flip in this series from what we saw in the regular season. The road team and the underdog won the three most recent meetings during the regular season. Now, the home team has won all three here in the playoffs. The Canucks though, are still just 2-7 in their last nine visits to the Shark Tank.

San Jose fans are just thrilled that their Sharks were finally able to win a game in the Western Conference Finals. After all, they were swept away last year by the Chicago Blackhawks and had lost eight in a row at this juncture before beating the NHL betting odds on Friday night.

The Sharks opened up on the playoff hockey lines as 115 favorites for Game 4, and have since risen to -120. After two straight high scoring affairs that have netted a total of 17 goals, the total has been lined at 5½ over plus 100.

Game 5 will take place back at Rogers Arena on Tuesday night.
