    Daily Sports Roundup: May 13

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Thunder and Grizzlies meet on the court in Memphis, while the Yankees get a visit from the BoSox, and the Cards take on the Reds.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The lone NBA playoff game on the schedule for Friday has Oklahoma City at Memphis in Game 6 of their Western Conference semifinal series. The Thunder grabbed a 3-2 series advantage with an easy 99-72 home win in Game 5 of the set on Wednesday night. Kevin Durant led the way with 19 points for Oklahoma City in that victory, while Russell Westbrook picked up 11 points and six assists, and Daequan Cook added 18 points off the bench. Zach Randolph was held to just nine points and seven rebounds in the losing cause for the Grizzlies, while Marc Gasol was good for 15 points on the night.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Friday features Seattle at Cleveland, Kansas City at Detroit, Baltimore at Tampa Bay, the Angels at Texas, Toronto at Minnesota, the White Sox at Oakland, and Boston at the Yankees. Clay Buchholz (3-3, 4.19 ERA) is slated to start for the Red Sox in that last matchup; righthander Buchholz was knocked around by New York back on April 9, surrendering five runs (four earned) on eight hits in just 3 2-3 innings of work in that contest. The Yankees will counter with Bartolo Colon (2-1, 3.86 ERA) on Friday night. Righthander Colon took to the mound against the Red Sox back on April 8, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits over 4 1-3 innings of work in a loss.

Over in the National League on Friday it's then San Francisco at the Cubs, Florida at Washington, Philadelphia at Atlanta, the Mets at Houston, Pittsburgh at Milwaukee, San Diego at Colorado, Arizona at the Dodgers, and St. Louis at Cincinnati. The Cardinals' Kyle Lohse (4-2, 2.24 ERA) will take on the Reds' Bronson Arroyo (3-3, 3.68 ERA) in that battle of NL Central clubs. Righthander Lohse was a hard-luck loser in his most recent start, giving up just one run on six hits over eight innings of work against the Brewers. Righthander Arroyo had to settle for a no-decision in his most recent trip to the mound against the Cubs, surrendering one run on seven hits in 7 1-3 innings that game.

Friday's betting tips: Randolph sags with excessive minutes

      Weather to watch

San Francisco Giants at Chicago Cubs – The forecast for the 2:20 p.m. ET first pitch calls for a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms, with a northeast wind of 12 miles per hour. Temperatures will hover about 70.

      Who’s hot

NBA: The Grizzlies are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games as a home favorite of 0.5 to 4.5 points.

MLB: Detroit is 5-0 in Justin Verlander’s last five starts on five days’ rest.

MLB: Houston is 9-2 in Bud Norris’ last 11 home starts.

      Who’s not

NBA: Only two of the last 10 Oklahoma City-Memphis games have played under.

MLB: Milwaukee is 2-7 in its last nine games against right-handed starters.

MLB: Arizona is 0-9 in Joe Saunders’ last nine road starts.

      Key stat

26 – That was the difference in bench points Wednesday (53-27) as Oklahoma City rolled past Memphis 99-72 to take a 3-2 series lead. Game 6 is Friday in Memphis. The Grizzlies’ lack of quality depth, exacerbated by the season-ending shoulder injury to Rudy Gay (19.8 ppg, 6.2 rpg), appears to be catching up with them.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Cleveland center fielder Grady Sizemore missed his second straight game Thursday with a right knee contusion and is considered day to day. The AL Central-leading Indians host Seattle Friday. Sizemore (.282, six home runs, 10 doubles, 11 RBIs) jammed his knee during a hard slide into second Tuesday against Tampa Bay. The Indians say the injury is unrelated to the microfracture surgery Sizemore had performed on his left knee last June.

      Game of the day

Oklahoma City Thunder at Memphis Grizzlies (-2, 195.5)

      Notable quotable

“It ain’t about fatigue at this point. Tired ain’t the reason. It’s about playing 48 minutes. … We’ve got offensive strategy we need to execute.” – veteran guard Tony Allen, whose older Grizzlies’ team faces elimination Friday night against the incredibly athletic Thunder.

      Notes and tips

Memphis forward Zach Randolph is slowing down as the playoffs wear on. Oklahoma City is keying on him. And just look at the minutes he’s played in the Western Conference semifinals: 37:55, 39:02, 44:29, 55:56, and 36:25. Since shooting 12 of 22 in the series opener, Randolph has hit 32 percent (22 of 69) from the field. Game 6 is Friday night in Memphis.

After taking two of three at Wrigley Field, the Cardinals (22-16) still have not lost a series since the second week in April. The NL Central leaders visit second-place Cincinnati for a key three-game series starting Friday. The Reds, who sit 1 ½ games back, took the division last year and were preseason favorites to repeat. Oddsmakers have Cincinnati favored Friday at -119 behind Bronson Arroyo (3-3, 3.68 ERA), who’ll be opposed by Kyle Lohse (4-2, 2.24 ERA). Lohse is a jokester who impersonated manager Tony La Russa to hand in the lineup card Thursday. With La Russa recovering from shingles, Lohse wore the manager’s jersey, fixed his hair like La Russa, and donned sunglasses to complete La Russa’s signature look.

Russia, going for its 26th ice hockey world championship, will play Finland on Friday in the semifinals while Sweden meets the Czech Republic. The Russians eliminated Canada 2-1 Thursday on goals by Ilya Kovalchuk and Alexei Kaigorodov. Finland advanced with a 4-1 win over Norway. The tournament is being played in Slovakia. BetEd oddsmakers peg Russia as a -210 favorite over Finland. The Czechs are even bigger favorites over Sweden, at -230.

        Friday's six-pack

-- Carlos Beltran hit three HRs Thursday; Mets need to dump salary, and some AL contender (Angels??) could use a guy like Beltran.

-- Giants head to Wrigley off a 6-0 homestand that propelled them back into first place in the NL West; starting pitching wins out in the end.

-- Tampa Bay is 21-7 in its last 28 games after a 1-8 start, and is now in first place in the AL East. Johnny Damon has been a big help.

-- Tennessee is paying new basketball coach Cuonzo Martin $1.3M a year; Martin was making $300,000 at Missouri State. Guy never even took Missouri State to the NCAAs. Must be nice.

-- Boise State signed a QB from Dr Phillips HS in Orlando; now that is some fine recruiting, getting a QB from Orlando to go to Boise State.

-- Eldrick Woods shot +6 for nine holes, then walked off the course on Thursday; if his leg was that bad, why did he bother showing up?

Friday's Den: A quick look at NFL's Week 1 games........

Saints @ Packers (-6, 47)—Last two Super Bowl champs open season with Thursday night game at Lambeau Field.

Steelers @ Ravens (-3, 37)—Biggest of the eight divisional matchups in Week 1. Not fond of divisional games in season openers.

Lions @ Bucs (-4, 41)—Matchup of the two fashionable Cinderella picks to win NFC title. Can Detroit keep QB Stafford healthy?

Falcons @ Bears (-1.5, 41.5)—We’ll see right away if Julio Jones was worth trading five draft picks for.

Bills @ Chiefs (-7, 43)—If you were a Buffalo fan, would you be happy the team decided to stick with Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB? No? Me either.

Colts @ Texans (even, 47.5)—Seems like these teams open and close every season against each other. Teams meet again in Week 16.

Eagles (-3.5, 45) @ Rams— Interesting to see if St Louis will have enough time to properly install McDaniels’ new offense; Rams ran same offense as Eagles last two years.

Bengals @ Browns (-2.5, 38)— This has to be the strangest offseason in NFL history. Just who is going to be the Bengals’ QB?

Titans @ Jaguars (-2.5, 41)—Tennessee is another team that doesn’t know who its QB is going to be. Better not be Jake Locker this soon.

Giants (-3) @ Redskins—Big Blue one of three road teams favored this week. Maybe because the other QB is Rex Grossman.

Panthers @ Cardinals (-4, 38)—Neither side knows who its QB will be. Chances are high the Arizona QB isn’t even on its roster yet.

Seahawks @ 49ers (-3)—Chances are team Jim Harbaugh left (Stanford) has a better QB (Andrew Luck) than the team he’s coaching this season.

Vikings @ Chargers (-7, 42)—Norvelous Norv Turner needs a good start for once; seems like he starts 2-3 every year. Vikings must really dislike Tarvaris Jackson, as much as they try to replace him.

Cowboys @ Jets (-3.5, 41)—While Mark Sanchez was organizing offseason workouts with teammates, Tony Romo was shooting 81 while trying to qualify for the US Open. Advantage, Jets.

Patriots (-3.5, 46) @ Dolphins—Would’ve loved to have been a fly on the wall in the Brady household when New England drafted Mallett.

Raiders @ Broncos (-1.5, 42)—Starting next season, Oakland will be only NFL team sharing its stadium with a baseball team.

Over is 13-7 so far in second round, after unders dominated in first round; favorites are 13-7 in this round.

Do Grizzlies have anything left in tank after dismal performance in last game, which followed 3OT loss in pivotal Game 4? Memphis bench was +44/+33 in its two series wins, -29/-11/-57 in its two losses. Westbrook had seven turnovers in both series losses, 6-3-3 in their three wins; he also had 40 points in Game 4. Harden has been a huge spark for Thunder (+29 in 26:28 in Game 5). Randolph had only nine points, guards made only 8-28 from floor last game; Memphis will need much more from all three guys if they're going to force a Game 7.

Thunder at Grizzlies: What bettors need to know
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Memphis Grizzlies (-2, 195.5)

                    Oklahoma City leads series 3-2

THE STORY: One more victory and the Oklahoma City Thunder will advance to the Western Conference finals. The Thunder seek that triumph on Friday when they visit the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 6 of the conference semifinals. Oklahoma City routed Memphis 99-72 in Wednesday’s Game 5 to take a 3-2 lead in the series, marking the first time the Grizzlies have trailed in the series. The Thunder’s victory came on the heels of the epic triple-overtime win two nights earlier in Memphis. There was little drama in Game 5 as Oklahoma City dominated the final 2 1/2 quarters and was hardly challenged in the second half by the tired and emotionally spent Grizzlies.

                    TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES: Memphis matched its lowest scoring output of the regular season with its disappointing Game 5 effort. The Grizzlies shot just 35.9 percent and were dominated on the boards, 50-33. Inside standouts Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol combined for just 24 points and 12 rebounds one game after combining for 60 points and 37 rebounds in the triple-overtime contest. Gasol with 15 points was the only Memphis player to score in double figures. The outside game wasn’t working either as Mike Conley (4-for-16), Tony Allen (4-for-13) and O.J. Mayo (2-for-9) all struggled. The Game 4 loss was the first at home for Memphis since March 9.

ABOUT THE THUNDER: A key component of Wednesday’s 27-point victory was that stars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook received significant rest with neither player even stepping on the court in the final quarter. Durant scored a team-high 19 points in 31 minutes and Westbrook had 11 points in 25 minutes. The Oklahoma City bench contributed 53 points, led by Daequan Cook, who had 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting and made four 3-point baskets. Nazr Mohammed scored 10 points, James Harden had nine points and Nick Collison added nine points and 10 rebounds. Starting forward Serge Ibaka had three blocks to raise his series total to 17.

                    WHO'S HOT/WHO’S NOT
: Cook is averaging 14 points over the last two games after averaging 2.7 over the first three contests of the series. Allen is averaging just seven points and shooting 30.4 percent over the last two games.

                    KEY STATISTIC
: Cook made more 3-pointers (four) by himself in Game 5 than the entire Memphis team (two).

                    TRENDS
                    :

                    * Over is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.
                    * Home team is 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
                    * Thunder are 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven road games.
                    * Grizzlies are 23-9 ATS in their last 32 home games.

                    LAST WORD
: “We’ve got our backs against the wall and we’ve got to bounce back and come out at home swinging. We have no other chance to lose another one. We’ve got to go right away and win the next game. There’s no other choice.” – Gasol on the Game 6 task for Memphis.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Memphis Grizzlies (-2, 195.5)

The Grizzlies' front line is finally starting to wear down.

After a triple-overtime loss to the Thunder in Game 4, Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol had very little left in the tank to take with them to Oklahoma City. Randolph was a mere 3 of 9 from the floor as he picked up five fouls. Gasol was a little better, going 6 of 9 from the field, but was little more than a turnstile on the defensive end as he tied for a team-worse minus-24.

“We got down a little bit and we gave up too easily,” Gasol said.

And if Randolph and Gasol can’t get going, the Grizzlies don’t stand much of a chance. Randolph is 14 of 50 in the three losses and has been contained since his explosion for 34 points in a Game 1 win.

"Embarrassed, that's the right word," Randolph said. "I get frustrated at myself. I couldn't make a shot. I was in the paint. We all missed layups. The ball wouldn't drop for us."

The key has been center Kendrick Perkins being able to defend Randolph and not needing a constant double-team. By Perkins playing the primary stopper and Oklahoma City mixing in different help looks, Randolph hasn’t been able to establish a consistent low-post presence.

That has led to massive dry spells for a Grizzlies offense plagued by suspect outside shooting.

"We wanted to make sure that he feels our bodies and make sure that he sees multiple defenders around him,” Oklahoma City Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. “Our guys have done a good job with that. He's not an easy player to guard. He's very crafty in his ability to score around the paint and he's strong. He's one of the best at doing what he does.

"I thought our bigs did a good job. We're putting fresh bodies against him and our guys have done a good job of fighting him for every position on the floor."

And if they keep up their recent form, Randolph and the Grizzlies won’t be able to recover.

                      Pick: Oklahoma City
