    Daily Sports Roundup: May 11

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Celtics and Heat continue their series in Miami, while the Blue Jays play host to the Red Sox, and the Phillies do battle with the Marlins.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

On the NBA's playoff schedule for Wednesday it's Boston at Miami and Memphis at Oklahoma City. The Heat took a 3-1 series lead on the Celtics with a 98-90 overtime win in Game 4 on Monday night. LeBron James picked up 35 points and 14 boards for the Heat in that victory, while Dwyane Wade was good for 28 points in the contest, and Chris Bosh scored 20 points. Paul Pierce had a team-high 27 points for Boston in that losing cause. The Thunder tied up their series with the Grizzlies 2-2 with a 133-123 triple-overtime victory in Game 4 on Monday night. Russell Westbrook had 40 points for Oklahoma City in that contest, while Kevin Durant picked up 35 points and 13 rebounds. Zach Randolph scored 34 points in the loss for Memphis; Marc Gasol had 21 rebounds.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Wednesday has Detroit at Minnesota, Oakland at Texas, Seattle at Baltimore, Tampa Bay at Cleveland, Kansas City at the Yankees, the White Sox at the Angels, and Boston at Toronto. Boston's John Lackey (2-4, 7.16 ERA) will take on the Jays' Jesse Litsch (3-2, 4.04 ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Lackey was pounded by the Angels in his last trip to the mound, surrendering eight runs on 10 hits over four innings of work in that contest. Righthander Litsch was beaten by the Red Sox back on April 17, giving up six runs (four earned) on seven hits over six innings. Litsch, however, is coming off a win over the Tigers (one run over 6 1-3 innings).

In National League action on Wednesday it's then San Diego at Milwaukee, Cincinnati at Houston, the Mets at Colorado, the Dodgers at Pittsburgh, Washington at Atlanta, St. Louis at the Cubs, Arizona at San Francisco, and Philadelphia at Florida. The Phillies will give the ball to Cliff Lee (2-3, 3.69 ERA) on Wednesday, while the Marlins counter with Ricky Nolasco (3-0, 3.23 ERA). Lefthander Lee was tagged with a loss by the Braves in his last start, giving up three runs on nine hits over seven innings of work while striking out 16 batters. Righthander Nolasco had to settle for a no-decision in his most recent outing against the Nationals, allowing two runs on six hits over his seven innings.

Wednesday’s betting tips: Grizzlies-Thunder stats dead even

      Who’s hot

NBA: Miami has covered in four of its last five games against Boston.

NBA: The over is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings between Memphis and Oklahoma City.

MLB: Tampa Bay has won 10 of its last 11 road games.

      Who’s not

NBA: Boston is just 2-6 against the spread in its last eight road games.

MLB: The under has cashed just five times in Washington’s last 18 road games.

MLB: Philadelphia has lost each of Cliff Lee’s last three starts.

      Key stat

2 – After four games, the Memphis Grizzlies have outscored the Oklahoma City Thunder by just two points (440-438) through the first four games of the series as they head into Wednesday’s Game 5 tied at two games apiece. The two clubs are also just about even in steals (36-32 Memphis), blocks (32-31 Memphis), and 3-point shooting (both around 31 percent).

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Vernon Wells, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim: Wells hit the DL with a groin injury on Tuesday after slumping with a .183 batting average to start the season. The injury has forced the Angels to get creative in the outfield by putting regular second baseman Howie Kendrick in left field Tuesday. He has never played left field in the bigs, or in the minor leagues.

      Game of the day

Memphis Grizzlies at Oklahoma City Thunder (-6.5, 197)

      Notable quotable

"I don't worry about it. I always look at baseball like a stock market. You don't look at it every day. If it's a good stock after a long season, it's going to be there." – New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez about his recent slump. A-Rod hasn’t hit a home run since April 24 and is hitting only .176 in his last 13 games. Many think his left oblique injury may be still bothering him at the dish.

      Notes and tips

Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra will stick with what’s working for Game 5, meaning center Joel Anthony and point guard Mike Bibby will start with Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Mario Chalmers coming off the bench. The Heat are set as 7-point favorites for Wednesday’s game, which is the biggest line we have seen in this series. Miami has covered four of the last five meetings between the two clubs, but more than 63 percent of *********** Consensus bettors are currently backing the Celtics.

Team USA will have its work cut out for it in the IIHF World Championships quarterfinals Wednesday against the Czech Republic as a big +275 underdog. The US club has had an up-and-down tournament so far and will have to deal with a Czech team that will have lots of fan support with the host Slovakia now out of the competition. The Czech Republic finished with a perfect 6-0-0 record in their group, while the US finished fourth in theirs. Team USA did get a boost with James van Riemsdyk joining the club after his Philadelphia Flyers were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The winger led the Flyers with seven goals in the postseason.

Novak Djokovic continues his chase of the ATP No. 1 overall ranking Wednesday in the third round of the Rome Masters on Wednesday. Djokovic, who has won his last six tournaments and each of his last 34 matches, is set as a massive -10,000 favorite against Lukasz Kubot. Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are also in action Wednesday. Nadal is currently at -10,000 in his matchup against Paola Lorenzi as well, while Federer is more reasonably priced at -455 against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

        Wednesday's six-pack

Monday’s Thunder-Grizzlies game was just sixth triple-OT playoff game in NBA history. Series continues with Game 5 Wednesday in Oklahoma City. Teams will be tired after Monday's marathon.

-- Five guys played 49+ minutes; Durant (57), Westbrook (51), Harden (49 off bench) for Thunder; Gasol (57) , Randolph (56) for Memphis.

-- Nick Collison was +22 in 35 minutes off the OC bench; excellent contribution.

-- For such a long, physical game, the foul shooting was excellent; Thunder were 42-50, Grizzlies 37-40.

-- Grizzlies’ starting guards were just 5-22 from floor; team shot 36%, grabbed 24 offensive boards, which is why they took 16 more shots than the Thunder.

-- James Harden was huge off the bench for Thunder, with 19 points, seven rebounds, seven assists; helps to have a sub who was a great college player. He isn’t afraid to take a big shot when time calls for it.

-- Memphis was up 18 in the second quarter, then down 10 with 4:58 left. All-in-all, a great game with lots of twists and turns. Too bad a lot the best part of the game was on after midnight in the east.

        Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week stuff..........

        13) Every time the Knicks lose next season, you can count on one of the NYC papers reminding us that Phil Jackson is available to coach the Knicks in 2012-13. Every time, except maybe after the first loss.

        12) In his career, Mets are 123-53 (.699) when Jose Reyes scores a run in the first inning.

        11) Maryland fans will be glad to know that Mark Turgeon has a 5-1 career record in NCAA tournament first round games. All he has to do now is make the tournament. A lot.

        10) Rutgers picked up a player when Gary Williams retired; Kansas State transfer Wally Judge was deciding between the Terps and Rutgers as a destination, when the coaching change made Judge’s mind up for him.

        9) Mets got four starts out of Chris Young before his shoulder fell apart; sometimes those bargain basement buys are in the basement for a reason.

        8) Think the NBA and its TV partners are queasy at the thought of a Memphis-Atlanta NBA Final? Or Memphis-anyone, I guess.

        7) Anticipation is high in Vancouver, with Canucks in Western final for first time in 17 years, and Detroit-San Jose beating each other up in other conference semi. Boston-Tampa Bay will both be very rested when the Eastern Conference finals begin.

        6) LY, Ubaldo Jimenez was 19-8, 2.88 with a 1.155 WHIP for Rockies; so far this year, Colorado is 0-5 when he starts (0-2, 5.88), and his WHIP is 1.462. Not good.

        5) Northwestern signed football coach/alum Pat Fitzgerald to a contract extension thru 2020; he is the third-youngest HC in the Big Dozen, and has been sought out by other schools looking for a football coach. Nice pre-emptive move by the Wildcats.

        4) Steve Kerr has five NBA championship rings, but wasn't good enough to make the 1988 Olympic team (they took Bimbo Coles instead). Don't think John Thompson gets enough credit for that decision. Team finished third by the way, winning the always-cherished bronze medal.

        3) Since the beginning of 2008, Nationals are 32-26 against the Braves, and 171-289 against everyone else.

        2) Troy Tulowizki has five HRs in six games against the Mets this year.

        1) Guy named Jim Crane is shelling out $680M to buy the Astros, so if the Astros are worth that kind of money, how much would a good team be worth? Best ballpark I've ever been in, Minute Maid Park.

Over is 12-5 so far in second round, after unders dominated in first round; favorites are 10-7 in this round.

Rondo is courageous but basically playing with one arm; he he had only five assists in pivotal Game 4, when Celtics had last shot in regulation to win game/even series but missed. Boston was 3-13 from arc in Game 4, after being 27-53 in first three games. Miami was minus-6 in 7:31 Wade was off court Monday. Bosh had 20 points/12 rebounds last game. Heat is 5-0 at home in playoffs, winning by 8-21-6-9-11 points, going 3-2 vs spread. Celtics lost Games 1-2 in this series here, by 9-11 points.

Memphis was up 18 in first half, down 10 with 4:58 left in Monday's triple OT epic that left series tied 2-2. Memphis bench was +44/+33 in its two series wins, -29/-11 in its two losses. Biggest factor here is who recovers quickest from Monday's marathon that saw five players play 49+ minutes. Westbrook had seven turnovers in both series losses, 6-3 in their two wins; he also had 40 points in Game 4. Harden/Collison are playing starters' minutes off bench and energizing Thunder.

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat (-7, 181)

                  Miami leads series 3-1

                  THE STORY
: Just when it looked like the Boston Celtics were ready to make this a series, the Miami Heat proved they had the extra gear needed for playoff success. The Heat refused to give in to the hostile TD Garden crowd on Monday and leaned on their stars to steal an overtime victory in Game 4. The Celtics were outmuscled in the final minutes, leaving them in a 3-1 hole in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals. Miami will be looking to close out the series when it hosts Game 5 on Wednesday.

                  TV
                  : 7 p.m. ET, TNT

                  ABOUT THE HEAT
: After getting run off the court in Game 3, it looked as though Miami was about to hand control of the series back to the Celtics. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh combined for a season-low 44 points in that loss as Boston seemed to figure out how to slow the transition attack. But Game 4 was back to business as usual, with the “Big Three” combining for 83 points. When the Celtics took a lead in the final minutes, James was quick to respond with a 3-pointer and traded layups with Paul Pierce to force overtime. The “Big Three” took over in the extra period, combining for all 12 points as Miami stole the 98-90 triumph. James led the way with 35 points and 14 rebounds, Wade added 28 and nine and Bosh chipped in 20 and 12.

                  ABOUT THE CELTICS
: Boston managed a total of five field goals in the fourth quarter and was limited to one while turning the ball over four times in the overtime. Kevin Garnett, who dominated Game 3 with 28 points and 18 rebounds, was held to seven points on 1-of-10 shooting and 10 boards on Monday. Rajon Rondo fought through his dislocated left elbow to play 38 minutes in Game 4 but recorded only 10 points and five assists while turning the ball over three times. Rondo made many of his passes one-handed, leaving them just off enough that the Miami defense could tip the ball or the Celtics’ scorers had to adjust to catch it. Paul Pierce was the bright spot, scoring 27 points, but he missed a chance to win it in regualtion went his off-balance fadeaway jumper clanged off the rim.

                  WHO’S HOT/WHO’S NOT
: After shooting 13 of 24 from the free throw line in the first three games, James went 9 of 9 from the stripe in Game 4. Pierce has scored 27 points in each of the last two games for Boston, shooting 19-of-40 combined.

                  KEY STATISTIC
: Rebounding. The Heat dominated the glass in Game 4, outrebounding the Celtics 45-28. Boston managed only three offensive boards.

                  TRENDS
                  :

                  * Favorite is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings.
                  * Over is 6-1 in the last seven meetings in Miami.
                  * Home team is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
                  * Celtics are 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings.
                  * Celtics are 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings in Miami.

                  LAST WORD
: “Wednesday night will be our greatest challenge that we’ve had with this group so far,” Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said. “We’ll get their best game on Wednesday and we have to be better. If we’re real about what we want to do, we have to beat the Boston Celtics at their best.”

Memphis Grizzlies at Oklahoma City Thunder (-6, 197)

                  Series tied 2-2

                  THE STORY
: Fresh off the fiercest game of the current NBA postseason, the Oklahoma City Thunder and Memphis Grizzlies both seek a pivotal Game 5 victory when the Western Conference semifinal series returns to the Sooner State on Wednesday. The Thunder evened the series at 2-2 with an epic 133-123 triple-overtime victory in Memphis on Monday that consisted of memorable performances and thrilling plays by several players on both squads. Memphis blew an 18-point first-half lead in Game 4 and Oklahoma City let a 10-point fourth-quarter advantage get away prior to the three overtimes. Perhaps the biggest factor for Game 5 is which team can recharge from the emotional contest – the Thunder who return home after the dramatic victory or a disappointed Grizzlies’ team that missed a chance at a 3-1 lead.

                  TV
                  : 9:30 p.m. ET, TNT

                  ABOUT THE THUNDER
: Russell Westbrook (40) and Kevin Durant (35) combined for 75 points in Game 4. Both players are averaging 29 points in the series. Westbrook finally got his ball-handling under control with just three turnovers after having 18 miscues over the first three games. Reserve James Harden had 19 points and was a splendid 10-for-10 from the free-throw line. Frontcourt players Serge Ibaka (seven points) and Kendrick Perkins (four points before fouling out) had difficult games but the Thunder received a major defensive contribution from Nick Collison. He had just four points and five rebounds in 35 minutes, but Oklahoma City outscored Memphis by 22 points while Collison was on the court.

                  ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES
: Memphis twice staved off defeat with late baskets as Mike Conley hit a 3-pointer near the end of regulation and reserve Greivis Vasquez nailed a 3-pointer late in the first overtime. Zach Randolph (34 points, 16 rebounds) and Marc Gasol (26 points, 21 rebounds) again had big games inside for the Grizzlies. Both players have six double-doubles in the postseason with Gasol’s contributions being particularly strong. Gasol averaged 11.7 points and seven rebounds in the regular season, but is averaging 18.8 points and 12.8 rebounds in this series. The Grizzlies were hurt by the absences of guards O.J. Mayo (18 points) and Conley (16 points) in the third overtime. Both players fouled out in the first extra session.

                  WHO'S HOT/WHO’S NOT
: Durant is averaging 30.9 points in nine postseason games. Randolph is averaging 23.3 points in 10 playoff contests.

                  KEY STATISTIC
: Five players played more minutes than a regulation game on Monday – Durant (57), Westbrook (51) and Harden (49) for the Thunder and Gasol (57) and Randolph (56) for the Grizzlies.

                  TRENDS

Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat (-7, 181)

Injuries and old age have finally taken their toll on the Celtics.

Kevin Garnett followed up on of his best playoff performances of his career in Game 3 with one of his worst in Game 4. The first-team All-Defensive team star was a horrendous 1-for-10 from the field, tentative around the rim and did little to make himself a factor on either end.

Meantime, both Garnett and Paul Pierce could be seen hobbling at different points during the game as their bodies struggled to keep up with the younger and more athletic Heat. In overtime, Miami simply pulled away with more energy and jump.

And then there is the play of Rajon Rondo.

Boston’s stud guard is hobbled by his dislocated left arm. It hung by his side for the most of Game 4 and he even missed a gimme layup late in regulation that would have given his team the lead with just over a minute remaining. He was so ineffective down the stretch, coach Doc Rivers went with Delonte West in crunch time, who is nursing a banged up shoulder.

"When our back is against the wall, that's when we show great resilience," Garnett said. "We'll see what we're made of."

However, Boston is just 1-2 when facing elimination the past two seasons.

                    Pick: Miami

Memphis Grizzlies at Oklahoma City Thunder (-6, 197)

Just how good is Mike Conley? The guard’s emergence as an NBA talent helped single-handedly knock the Spurs out of the playoffs but now he is killing the Grizzlies.

The former Ohio State star was just 2-for-12 from the floor with five assists against two turnovers as he fouled out in 38 minutes in Memphis’ Game 4 overtime loss. Not good for a starting point guard. He also struggled to stop Oklahoma City lead guard Russell Westbrook, who dropped 40 points on 15-of-33 shooting.

Reserve guard O.J. Mayo also fouled out but was much more effective in posting 18 points, five rebounds, five assists and no turnovers as he was 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. To stop Westbrook and get him out of his rhythm, Mayo must get out on the run to steer the team’s offense.

                    But will he?

"I am proud of O.J.," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "We're in the playoffs and he's a very big part of what we're doing and we need him to play well in order for us to be successful."

However, Hollins isn’t playing him enough. Conley has struggled this series and it is clear he needs to yield his minutes to Mayo in order to get by Oklahoma City.

Until then, the Thunder will continue to have the upper hand.

                    Pick: Oklahoma City

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Mets at Colorado Rockies (-175, 8)

The New York Mets’ starting pitching staff wasn’t anything to write home about to begin with, but it’s in a lot worse shape after some bad news came down early this week.

Chris Young has suffered another anterior capsule tear and is expected to miss the remainder of the season. Young boasted a 1.88 ERA in four starts this season.

“I know where his head’s at,” Chris Capuano told reporters. “I know he’s down. He’s just such a competitor and such an asset to this team. In all the meetings we’ve had, he’s been the guy who has spoken up and said, ‘Come on, guys, let’s pick it up.’ Kind of the leader. He’ll be missed.”

Meanwhile, 21-year-old prospect Jenrry Mejia will also be shelved for the year as he needs Tommy John surgery, so there goes a fill-in option for the Mets.

New York ranked 28th in the league in WHIP and 29th in quality starts heading into Tuesday’s game. Jon Niese gets the call Wednesday and he’s actually been pretty good so far this year. We’re still sticking with the over, though.

                          Pick: Over

Chicago White Sox at Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (-120, 8)

The White Sox have turned it around a bit after suffering through a rotten stretch that saw them drop eight of nine games, but they still have a long way to go yet.
Chicago still sits mired in fourth place in the AL Central, while the club has already lost about 10 units for its betting supporters.

The White Sox hope that Jake Peavy will be part of the solution. He makes his season debut on Wednesday following a number of shoulder issues.

“I do want to bring some enthusiasm, some fire, some passion,” Peavy told reporters. “I certainly think the ballclub could use a shot in the arm. I not promising anything, by any means, but I can promise you this: We’re going to compete on that day. Not to say that we haven’t been—but there’s going to be more energy than we’ve had and go out there and try to turn things around, because we’ve dug ourselves a pretty nice hole here.”

Peavy has gone through a couple setbacks during rehab already but says he’s finally healthy. Even if that’s true, he may need some more time to regain top form – he was smacked around for five runs over seven innings in his last Triple-A rehab start.

                          Pick: Angels
