Sunday Night Baseball: Braves at Phillies
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies (-134, 7.5)

For the second consecutive week, the Philadelphia Phillies get ESPN’s Sunday night spotlight on their home field, this time against the National League East rival Atlanta Braves. Let’s delve into how things look for this matchup:

          WE MEET AGAIN

The Phillies have had the upper hand lately in this rivalry, claiming seven of the last 10 meetings. This is the second series of the year between these two squads, with Philly having taken two of three at Atlanta in early April.

In Friday night’s opener of this three-game set, though, the Braves notched a 5-0 victory, with Derek Lowe and three relievers combining on a two-hitter.

At Citizens Bank Park, Philly had won three in a row and five of the last seven in this rivalry prior to Friday’s setback.

          PITCHERS PATTERNS

Cole Hamels, one of the “weaker” pitchers in the Phils’ loaded rotation, takes the ball tonight, and that’s been a good sign lately for Philadelphia. The southpaw got pounded by the Mets in his first appearance of the season, allowing six runs on seven hits in just 2.2 innings of a 7-1 home loss. But since then, he’s been sterling.

The Phillies have won five in a row behind Hamels, with the veteran getting the decision in four of those outings while lowering his ERA to a solid 2.66. He’s given up a total of five earned runs over 38 innings in that stretch, going at least seven innings in all five games, including a 3-0 victory at Atlanta on April 10 in which he threw seven shutout innings, with four hits and eight strikeouts.

Most recently, he tossed a complete game Tuesday in a 4-1 home win against Washington, yielding the one run on five hits and a walk, with six strikeouts. Against Atlanta, he’s 10-5 lifetime with a 3.72 ERA in 20 starts.

Braves starter Jair Jurrjens has been solid in all four of his starts this year, going 3-0 with a stifling 1.52 ERA, as he’s allowed just five runs in 29.2 total innings. Like Hamels, Jurrjens has a complete game to his credit, scattering nine hits in an 8-2 victory at San Diego on April 26.

The right-handed Jurrjens has a solid 2.56 ERA in nine career starts against the Phils, though he’s gone just 3-3 in those contests.

          TEAM TRENDS

Philly, a perennial title contender in the NL, has won six of its last eight games and is on a bundle of additional hot streaks, including 53-22 overall, 41-15 in division play, 41-15 against winning teams, 46-20 at Citizens Bank and 52-22 at home against right-handed starters.

In addition, behind Hamels, the Phils are on runs of 8-3 overall, 10-1 against winning teams and 5-1 at home.

Atlanta, meanwhile, has won six in a row overall and six of its last seven on the highway. In addition, the Braves have won four in a row against lefty starters, and with Jurrjens toeing the slab, they are on surges of 9-4 in his last 13 starts, 6-2 with the right-hander going on five days’ rest and 5-2 inside the NL East.

HOWARD OFF BASE; JONES JUST CHIPPER

Phillies slugger Ryan Howard has solid career numbers against the Braves, sporting a .317 average while hitting 34 homers in 382 at-bats – or one every 11.2 at-bats. However, he’s taken the collar in his last two games against the Braves, going 0-for-4 to wrap up the early April series, then going 0-for-4 on Friday night.

Atlanta’s Chipper Jones went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in Friday’s win, and the veteran is now hitting a robust .336 for his career against Philly (222 games).

          LOWS AND HIGHS

The Phillies, with their stifling pitching staff, are on several under streaks, including 8-3 in division action, 9-4 against righty starters and 4-0 on Sunday. And with with Hamels on the hill, Philly sports under streaks of 26-9-1 overall, 7-2-1 at home, 10-3 on Sunday and 15-5-1 against winning teams.

In addition, in this rivalry, the under is 3-0-1 in the last four meetings.

On the flip side, the over for the Braves is on stretches of 10-3 overall, 5-1 in roadies, 11-4 in Sunday outings and 7-2 with Jurrjens throwing on Sunday, though the total has gone low in Atlanta’s last four division contests.

Hot lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Seattle Mariners (-110, 7.5)

Few players are as hot as Seattle slugger Justin Smoak.

The former University of Georgia standout is hitting .315 with five home runs and 21 RBIs this year, but has been nearly unstoppable the past week. Over the past four games, he is 8-for-15 with a home run, three doubles and four RBIs.

“It’s been a long time, and it doesn’t happen very often,” Smoak said of his hot streak. “When you get those times, you just have to run with it.”

Not surprisingly, the team is 3-1 during his tear and is relying on him as its No. 5 hitter. Manager Eric Wedge admitted he was tempted to move him into the cleanup spot after a white hot week, but said he needs to allow the 24-year-old first baseman to continue to develop.

“He does have tremendous power,” Wedge said. “As a young hitter, he’s still getting better and will continue to get better.”

And all the Mariners need is a little pop.

The team is 8-2 over its past 10 thanks to a pitching staff that has allowed just 2.1 runs per game during that time. Mix in Smoak’s emergence as a big bat, and the Mariners have a winning recipe.

            Pick: Seattle

Washington Nationals at Florida Marlins (-140, 8)

Florida appears to be finding its stride behind the plate.

The Marlins are a mere 5-5 in their past 10 games, but have seen the over go a stunning 7-2-1 during that stretch. In those games, the team is scoring an average of 5.1 runs per game. And that isn’t what the Nationals' pitching staff wants to see.

Washington has seen the over go 11-4 in their past 15 road games due to its shaky staff and taking on runs late in blowout losses.

And then there is Marlins slugger Mike Stanton, who is learning how to make in-game adjustments and become the big-league masher he was projected to be. Stanton is hitting just .232 this season, but has five home runs and 13 RBIs. The 21-year-old also is coming off a series against the St. Louis Cardinals that saw him go 6-for-19 with three home runs, three RBIs and six runs scored.

"These are the kind of games that show what type of team you are," Stanton said. "We're definitely showing we're a different team from the previous year."
And this year they are a team that kills bad pitching – just what the Nationals are bringing to town.

            Pick: Over

                  Sunday, May 8

Over is 8-4 so far in second round, after unders dominated in first round; favorites are 8-4 in this round.

Atlanta scored 103 points in Game 1, making 51% from floor (7-13 on arc), then scored 73-82 points in last two games, making combined 4-19 from arc. Chicago was +19/+13 on boards last two games, after being -1 in Game 1 loss. Rose went nuts last games with 44 points, 7 assists- the other four Chicago starters were just 9-30 from floor. Atlanta's starters were a combined minus-95 in a dreadful Game 3 performance.

Lakers are 10-52 from arc in series, Dallas 29-74; Mavericks are making the extra pass to find open man, and that man is making shots. Artest is back for this game after being suspended for Game 3, but he's not what they need- they need another scorer. Dallas had 29-14 advantage in FTs taken last game, can gain an unlikely sweep with win here. Terry had 23 points off bench last game, and was +13.
