Brewers look to snap 7-game losing skid

    MILWAUKEE BREWERS (13-19)

    at ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (19-14)

First pitch: Saturday, 4:10 p.m. EDT
Line: St. Louis -125, Milwaukee +115, Total: 8.5

The Brewers try to jump-start their offense and stop their seven-game losing skid when they face the Cardinals for the second of a three-game set in St. Louis Saturday afternoon. In Friday’s series opener, Jaime Garcia carried a perfect game into the eighth inning and finished with a two-hit shutout as the Cards won 6-0.

St. Louis is playing some great baseball recently, winning seven of its past 10 contests. Matt Holliday currently has a 12-game hitting streak, going 20-for-49 (.408) during the run, which has actually lowered his NL-leading batting average to .410. Lance Berkman, who received a day off Friday, is batting .424 with 4 HR and 17 RBI in his past 10 games, while Albert Pujols is batting .302 with six homers and 18 RBI in his past 23 contests.

The Redbirds send Kyle Lohse (4-1, 2.44 ERA) to the mound on Saturday. Since losing his first game of the season, Lohse is 4-0 with a 1.93 ERA and 0.80 WHIP in his past five starts, allowing just 23 hits in 37.1 innings. However, he was shaky in his last outing on Monday, when he gave up five runs and six hits in six innings in a no-decision versus Florida. Lohse has not been successful when facing the Brewers in the past, as his team is just 5-9 in his 14 career meetings. Lohse allowed eight runs and 13 hits in 11 innings over two starts versus Milwaukee last year, which increased his lifetime ERA to 5.49 against the Brewers.

Milwaukee has been outscored 31-7 during its seven-game losing skid, which includes three shutouts. The Brew Crew has batted .157 during the skid with 62 strikeouts and just nine walks. Prince Fielder is 3-for-26 with 6 K in these seven games, while Ryan Braun is 4-for-25 with seven strikeouts during the skid.

The Brewers send struggling right-hander Yovani Gallardo (2-2, 6.10 ERA) to the hill to try to stop the bleeding. Gallardo has been terrible his past three starts (1-1, 8.44 ERA, 2.19 WHIP) and has also been brutal in three road starts this year (0-2, 7.72 ERA, 2.02 WHIP). In his last outing Monday at Atlanta, he was torched for nine hits and five runs in just five innings of work. He also walked four batters, but did strike out seven. Gallardo has been brutal against St. Louis in his career, going 0-4 with a 5.63 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in seven career starts. His team is 1-6 in these outings.

Although neither pitcher has been successful against his Saturday opponent, the Cardinals have the sizable advantage both on the hill and at the plate. With the money line not tilted too much it its favor, I’m picking St. Louis.

The FoxSheets show this highly-rated trend which expects Milwaukee’s losing skid to reach eight games:

Play Against - Road teams when the money line is +125 to -125 (MILWAUKEE) - cold hitting team - batting .240 or worse over their last 10 games, with a cold starting pitcher- ERA >= 7.50 over his last 3 starts. (130-69 since 1997.) (65.3%, +52 units. Rating = 3*).

Arroyo, Reds try to win again at Wrigley

      CINCINNATI REDS (17-15)

      at CHICAGO CUBS (14-17)

First pitch: Saturday, 1:10 p.m. EDT
      Line: Cincinnati -130, Chicago +120

The Reds look to continue their success at Wrigley Field when they take on the Cubs Saturday afternoon for the middle contest of three-game weekend series. Cincinnati has won seven of its past eight road games against the Cubs, including a 5-4 win on Friday.

The Reds were 12-4 against the Cubs last year, outscoring them 48-15 in the seven games at Wrigley Field. Saturday’s starter Bronson Arroyo (3-3, 4.17 ERA) didn’t allow a run in two starts in the Windy City last year, tossing 13 scoreless innings, allowing just seven hits and three walks while fanning 10. He has won four straight starts at Wrigley, and is currently riding an 18-inning scoreless streak in Chicago. For his career against the Cubs, Arroyo is 9-7 with a 2.87 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 20 lifetime starts, including 4-1 with a 1.34 ERA in his past six starts versus Chicago. On offense, reigning NL MVP Joey Votto had an RBI single on Friday’s and has now reached based safely in 35 straight games dating back to last year.

The Cubs will send Casey Coleman (1-2, 7.36 ERA) to the hill on Saturday. Coleman has been terrible this season, sporting a 1.96 WHIP in four starts and allowing a .418 on-base percentage, which is tied for the majors’ worst OBP among pitchers who have made 4+ starts. He allowed four runs on four hits in five innings in his last start Sunday at Arizona, and in his lone home start on April 22 against the Dodgers, he was lit up for six runs on six hits in just 2.2 innings. Coleman’s only start versus Cincy came last August, when he allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings in a no-decision.

The Cubs have lost four straight and six of seven at Wrigley Field. If Chicago is to end this skid, it needs to do a much better job hitting in the clutch. The Cubs were 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position during Friday’s loss, and are now hitting .145 with RISP in their past 10 games. Aramis Ramirez and Alfonso Soriano are a combined 2-for-25 when facing Arroyo over the past three seasons.

The money line doesn’t fully capture the huge pitching mismatch, especially taking into consideration Arroyo’s recent mastery over the Cubs. I’m picking Cincinnati, and the FoxSheets provide two more trends which support the Reds:

Play On - Any team (CINCINNATI) - good NL offensive team (>=5.0 runs/game) against a team with a good bullpen (ERA<=3.75), cold hitting team - batting .250 or worse over their last 20 games. (35-16 over the last 5 seasons.) (68.6%, +19 units. Rating = 2*).

Play Against - All teams when the money line is +125 to -125 (CHICAGO CUBS) - with a starting pitcher whose WHIP is 1.650 or worse on the season-NL, with a cold starting pitcher- ERA >= 7.00 over his last 3 starts. (79-40 over the last 5 seasons.) (66.4%, +35.4 units. Rating = 2*).

Verlander tries to cool off hot Toronto bats

        DETROIT TIGERS (15-18)

        at TORONTO BLUE JAYS (15-17)

First pitch: Saturday, 4:07 p.m. EDT
        Line: Detroit -115, Toronto +105, Total: 7.5

Toronto will play its fifth straight game without reigning home-run champ Jose Bautista when they host the Tigers and their ace Justin Verlander on Saturday. Adam Lind has filled the slugger’s void nicely, as he went 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI in Friday’s 7-4 win to open this four-game series. Toronto had a season-high 15 hits in the victory.

Verlander hasn’t looked like an ace so far this season, going 2-3 with a 3.75 ERA, but he does have 51 K in 48 IP. Although he has thrown three straight quality starts, Verlander only carries a 4.26 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in these outings. He gave up three runs on eight hits and four walks in Monday’s no-decision versus the Yankees. Verlander carries a 6.68 lifetime ERA in five starts versus Toronto, but he was great against the Jays last year. He allowed two runs in eight innings in both outings versus the Jays last year, racking up 13 K, but allowing three homers.

Bautista has been out of action since leaving Sunday’s game with neck tightness, but that hasn’t slowed down Lind, who is hitting .477 with 6 HR and 15 RBI during his current 11-game hit streak. The Blue Jays will send Ricky Romero (2-3, 3.00 ERA) to the mound Saturday. He had his start pushed back two days due to a strained left oblique muscle he suffered when falling down after catching a line drive in his last start on April 29 against the Yankees. In that outing versus New York, Romero allowed just two runs on five hits in six innings of work to pick up the win. He has been brilliant at Rogers Centre this year, with a 1.74 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in three starts. But Romero has been subpar when facing Detroit, with a lifetime ERA of 4.38 and 1.70 WHIP in four career starts versus the Tigers.

Despite Bautista not playing, I still like Romero and Toronto to pull off the mild upset and win again at home. This highly-rated FoxSheets trend also likes the Blue Jays to win:

Play On - Home underdogs with a money line of +100 or higher (TORONTO) - with a starting pitcher whose strikes out 5 or more batters per start, with a team batting average of .255 or worse on the season (AL). (59-36 since 1997.) (62.1%, +35.2 units. Rating = 3*).

Colon tries to stay hot facing Texas

          NEW YORK YANKEES (18-12)

          at TEXAS RANGERS (17-16)

First Pitch: Saturday, 8:05 p.m. EDT
Line: New York -105, Texas -105, Total: 10

After winning the first game of their three-game series, the Yankees will send Bartolo Colon (2-1, 3.00 ERA) to the mound against the Rangers’ Derek Holland (3-1, 4.66 ERA) on Saturday night.

Texas started the season on fire, winning 14 of its first 21 games. However, the Rangers have lost nine of 12 since then and find themselves two games behind the first-place Angels in the AL West. After allowing just three earned runs in his first two starts, Holland has allowed at least 5 ER in three of his past four starts. Holland has been hit hard by the Yankees in his career, going 0-3 with an 8.10 ERA in his four appearances (three starts) against them. Holland has also been horrible at home this year, with a 6.50 ERA and 1.72 WHIP in three starts in Arlington.

Bartolo Colon has enjoyed a little bit of a revival of his career so far this season with the Yankees. After not pitching for the entire 2010 season, Colon has won two of his three starts with the Yankees, holding opponents to six total ER, while pitching into the seventh inning in every start. Colon has enjoyed great success against Texas in his career, going 17-6 with a 3.60 ERA in his 26 starts.

The Yankees snapped a three-game losing streak on Friday and haven’t forgotten that Texas easily dismissed them in the postseason last year after New York took Game 1. Texas is just not playing well right now, and I like the Yankees to jump on Holland, while getting a solid performance from Colon, who looks like he did during his best years with Cleveland. I’m taking New York, which is backed up by this FoxSheets trend:

N.Y. YANKEES are 47-15 (75.8%, +23.6 Units) against the money line vs. teams whose hitters strike out 6 or less times/game over the last 3 seasons. The average score was N.Y. YANKEES 6.0, OPPONENT 3.9 - (Rating = 1*).

Mets try to stop Ethier, Dodgers on Saturday

            LOS ANGELES DODGERS (15-18)

            at NEW YORK METS (14-18)

First Pitch: Saturday, 7:10 p.m. EDT
Line: New York -125, Los Angeles +115, Total: 7.5

The two financially-strapped teams play game two of their three-game series at Citi Field on Saturday, when Dodgers’ hurler Jon Garland (1-2, 3.81 ERA) takes on New York’s Chris Young (1-0, 1.88 ERA).

Andre Ethier did not let an elbow injury slow him down as he hit in his 30th straight game on Friday night. Ethier is now one hit shy of tying the Dodgers all-time mark set by Willie Davis in 1969. Ethier can also become the first player with a hitting streak longer than 30 games since Philadelphia's Jimmy Rollins hit in 38 straight bridging the 2005 and 2006 seasons. Garland gave up three runs in six innings Sunday, but received no support from his offense in a 7-0 loss to the Padres. He is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in four career starts against the Mets.

The Mets will be looking for their third straight win when they send probably their best starter this season in Young to the mound. Young has allowed five total ER and allowed just 12 hits in his 24 innings this season, but has not received run support and has just one win. Jose Reyes is batting .400 over his past six games. He went 3-for-4 with a double, two triples and two runs scored Friday, and he's 5-for-6 with a triple in his career off Jon Garland.

Ethier has a good chance to extend his hit streak, as he is 12-for-29 with two doubles and six home runs in his career against Young. Despite Ethier’s success, I like the Mets to take Game 2 and sweep this series against the struggling Dodgers who have lost three straight coming into this game.

This highly-rated FoxSheets trend also sides with New York:

Play On - Home teams (N.Y. METS) - with a starting pitcher whose ERA is 3.70 or better on the season (NL) against opponent with a starting pitcher whose WHIP is 1.050 or better on the season-NL. (175-100 since 1997.) (63.6%, +79.3 units. Rating = 3*).

MLB Betting Preview: Atlanta Braves at Phillies

Cole Hamels is looking for his second win of the year over the Braves.
Another week of baseball wagering ends with a great prime-time matchup on ESPN when the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies battle Sunday evening (5:00 p.m. PT). The game will complete the second of six 2011 series between the NL East rivals with a third just around the corner before the clubs take about a 2-month respite from each other.

The Braves entered the series hot and extended their winning streak to six games with Friday's 5-0 whitewashing of the Phils. A 130 underdog to Cliff Lee and Philadelphia, Atlanta's Derek Lowe took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before losing the bid and giving way to his bullpen to complete the shutout.

Lowe was pulled in part because of a blister that developed on his right foot. The injury is not expected to keep him from his next assignment. Lee posted a career-best 16 strikeouts in his seven innings of work but was a victim to a 3-run outburst by the Braves in third inning to fall to 2-3 on his personal ledger.

Both teams were forced to shift their starting rotations in Saturday's second game that was still in progress at press. A doubleheader forced on them because of a rainout this past week had the Braves sending 20-year-old Julio Teheran to the mound at Citizens Bank Park to make his major league debut. Philadelphia inserted Kyle Kendrick into the rotation for the game after Roy Oswalt was placed on the disabled list Friday with back trouble.

Philadelphia was carrying 120 chalk into that game with an 8½-run total.

Sunday's series finale pits Jair Jurrjens (3-1, 1.52) on the mound for Atlanta opposite lefty Cole Hamels (5-1, 2.66) for the Phillies. The two met in Philly last July, each pitching well but not figuring into the decision with Atlanta scoring a 6-3 win in 11 frames.

Jurrjens comes in off two consecutive victories, one a complete-game performance on the road in San Diego near the end of April and the other this past Monday at home over the Brewers. Jurrjens worked into the eighth vs. Milwaukee, allowing a pair of runs and striking out four without a free pass.

The right-hander got a late start to the season after an oblique injury sidelined him during spring training. He's pitched well enough to be 4-0 on the season as his ERA would suggest, sporting a fantastic 18:5 K/BB ratio in his nearly 30 innings of work.

Jurrjens has held the Phillies in check the past few seasons with a 2.56 ERA in his last nine starts vs. Ryan Howard & Company. He owns a 1.87 ERA in five starts at CBP, holding the Phils to a .178 batting average. The Braves won three of the five games.

Number four in the rotation when the season opened, Hamels has pitched like a staff ace since his rough outing in his first start of 2011. His five assignments since the loss to the Mets have all been quality starts and resulted in Philadelphia wins.

One of those winning efforts was against the Braves in Atlanta on April 10. Hamels worked the first seven innings of Philly's eventual three-zip victory. He saw the Braves five times a season ago, Philadelphia 2-3 in those starts with Hamels' 3.97 ERA vs. Atlanta about a run higher than his overall season mark.

The generally even-tempered Wally Bell is scheduled to be under the mask for Sunday's matchup and brings a 3-3-1 'over/under' record to the plate. The only trend he's exhibited so far this season is a perfect 4-0 mark on home favorites in the 160-180 range.

A nice evening is in the forecast according to the weatherman. Mostly clear skies are on the list with the upper-60s for a game-time temperature and a very light breeze blowing in from left-center.

The Phillies will hit the road for eight games after this contest, stopping first in Florida on Monday before heading to Atlanta and St. Louis. The Braves will enjoy Monday off, then open an 8-game homestand beginning with the Nationals on Tuesday.

MLB Betting Preview: NY Yankees at Texas Rangers

He’s 37 and didn’t pitch last year. But Bartolo Colon isn’t washed up.

The hefty right-hander has been one of the biggest surprises of the season going 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA and 1.09 WHIP for the New York Yankees.

The 5-foot-11, 265-pounder from the Dominican Republic is slated to start for the Yankees when they meet the Rangers on Saturday in the second of a three-game series in Texas. Game time is 5:05 p.m. (PT).

Colon has fanned 33 in 33 innings. He was impressive again in his last start this past Monday as the Yankees defeated Detroit, 5-3, as 125 road ‘dogs against Justin Verlander.

Colon went seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits to go along with seven strikeouts. He didn’t factor in the decision. The combined eight runs pushed on the eight-run total.

Colon last pitched in the big leagues two years ago when he went 3-6 for the Chicago White Sox with a 4.19 ERA. He was tagged for 13 homers in 62 1/3 innings.

In his career against Texas, Colon is 15-5 with a 3.72 ERA.

The Yankees are leading the tough American League East. However, they entered this series just 5-6 on the road. Texas had won 11 of its first 16 homes games.

New York shortstop Derek Jeter is dealing with an ailing right hip. Texas right fielder Nelson Cruz has been battling a right quadriceps injury.

The Rangers entered the series hoping to get back closer Neftali Feliz, who has been on the disabled list due to right shoulder inflammation.

Texas is battling the Los Angeles Angels for first place in the American League West. The Rangers came into this series having dropped six of eight on a recent West Coast road trip to Oakland and Seattle.

The Rangers are hoping southpaw Derek Holland can tame the powerful Yankee bats. The Yankees rank No. 1 in homers and are fifth in runs scored.

New York was 3-3 in its first six games facing a left-handed starter. One of those victories occurred against Holland on April 16.

The Yankees defeated Holland, 5-2, as 120 home favorites behind Freddy Garcia. Holland gave up five runs in 7 2/3 innings. Lifetime versus the Yankees, Holland is 0-3 with an 8.10 ERA in 20 innings.

New York is the only team to beat Holland. The 24-year-old is 3-1 with a 4.66 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. Holland yielded only two earned runs on eight hits in seven innings during his past outing last Monday in a 5-4 loss to Oakland. Holland didn’t get a decision laying 105 on the road against Brandon McCarthy.

The combined nine runs went ‘over’ the eight-run total.

Prior to that game, Holland had surrendered five runs in each of his previous three starts.

The Yankees won two of three from the Rangers at home in mid-April, but came into this year having lost five of the past six times in Texas.

The ‘over’ has cashed in five of Texas’ last six games through this past Thursday. The Yankees were on an 8-1-3 ‘under’ run entering the series.

Temperatures for the matchup are forecast to be in the 80s with just a five percent chance of rain. It should be an excellent night for hitters as the wind projections call for 18 mph winds blowing out.

The ‘over’ has cashed in 10 of the Rangers’ first 16 games at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

Following this series, which concludes on Sunday, the Yankees return home for a six-game homestand against Kansas City and Boston starting on Tuesday with the Royals. The Rangers host a three-game series with Oakland beginning on Monday.

MLB Odds: Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros

A pair of National League Central Division rivals are set to play the second game of their first 2011 series against each other, as the Houston Astros (12-19, -4.65 units) and Pittsburgh Pirates (15-16, +4.96 units) meet up on Saturday night at PNC Park. The first pitch is expected to be thrown at 4:05 p.m. (PT).

Pittsburgh has come back home after a successful road trip that included series wins over National League West foes Colorado and San Diego. The Pirates managed to plate 28 runs over the six games, which is far different than the 2.9 runs they’ve averaged at home per contest.

The Pirates’ offense has managed to hit just .196 at home this season, which has directly resulted in a 4-8 record on the Allegheny River.

Pittsburgh hopes to have leadoff hitter Jose Tabata (.242 average) back in the lineup after he exited last Saturday’s game with tightness in his right hamstring and has not played since.

Despite the offensive woes, Pittsburgh is likely to be slightly favored, which may be a bad thing for backers since the club is 7-21 in starting pitcher Charlie Morton’s last 28 starts.

Morton (3-1, 3.52) will be making his sixth start of the season and be aiming to defeat Houston for the first time in his career. The right-hander is 0-3 with a 9.00 ERA in four career starts versus the Astros, allowing them to hit a combined .358 against him. It’s important to note that all three outings came at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

Houston has surrendered a major league-worst 168 runs and will likely need outfielder Carlos Lee to return to the lineup in order to outscore Pittsburgh in the series. Lee remains unavailable as he tries to work his way back from a rib-cage injury, but has taken batting practice and shagged balls.

“Swinging the bat is not a problem,” he commented. “It’s just a matter of getting comfortable with the pain.”

Totals bettors would be pleased to see Lee return to the lineup on Saturday due to the club going ‘over’ in nine of its last 10 Saturday games. That fits nicely with the last five meetings going ‘over’ between these two clubs in Pittsburgh coming into the series.

The Astros will be a confident ball club in the second game of the series due to having Bud Norris (2-1, 3.03) on the mound for his seventh start of the season. Houston has won four straight games with him on the hill after dropping the first two of the 2011 campaign.

Norris was dominant in picking up a 5-0 home win over Milwaukee last time out, tossing seven shutout innings and collecting a season-high 11 strikeouts. He enters with four straight quality starts in tow and the club has posted victories in eight of his last 11 such outings.

Weather forecasts are a bit dreary in Pittsburgh. Saturday’s game-time temperature is expected to be in the upper-50s, low-60s with a slight southwesterly breeze.

NHL Betting: Vancouver Canucks host Predators

The top-seeded Vancouver Canucks find themselves just one win away from advancing to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since playing for the Stanley Cup in 1994.

The Canucks head back to Rogers Arena following a 4-2 win over the fifth-seeded Nashville Predators as 125 favorites on Thursday in Game 4 to take a commanding 3-1 series lead in the NHL’s Western Conference semifinals.

Vancouver can knock out Nashville with a victory on home ice Saturday in Game 5 while a loss would send the series back to the Music City on Monday. Game time is 5:00 p.m. (PT) with CBC and Versus providing the television coverage.

Oddsmakers have installed the Canucks as decided 210 chalk to wrap the series up. Saturday's total is five goals.

The Canucks have been eliminated in this round three of the last four years, including the past two by the Blackhawks who have become their nemesis. Beating Chicago in the opening round in a grueling 7-game series seems to have boosted the team’s confidence though and has fans believing the third time playing for the Cup could be the charm.

Winning four Northwest Division titles in five years, capped by the first Presidents’ Trophy in franchise history this season, is not enough for Vancouver fans anymore. After all, the team that has earned the Presidents’ Trophy has hoisted the Cup only once in the previous seven years. However, strong goaltending by Roberto Luongo may help the Canucks get another shot at the Cup if he continues his strong play from this series.

Luongo has surrendered two goals in each of the last three games after posting a 1-0 shutout in Game 1, stopping 111 of 117 shots in the series overall (.949). His counterpart Pekka Rinne of the Predators has been outstanding as well, keeping 129 of 137 shots out of the net (.942).

This stellar goalie play between the two is hardly surprising, as Rinne and Luongo are two of the three finalists for the Vezina Trophy given annually to the league’s top netminder.

The teams did see the total squeak ‘over’ for the first time in eight meetings in Game 4, but Rinne was not on the ice when Vancouver’s Henrik Sedin lit the lamp with only 21 seconds remaining on an empty-netter. Sedin tied for the team lead in points with three while Christian Ehrhoff and Ryan Kesler also each tallied one goal and two assists.

Ehrhoff got the scoring started with 4:56 left in the first period before Nashville’s Joel Ward snuck one by Luongo off a rebound with less than a minute remaining to tie it up 1-1. Ward’s goal was the team’s first off the power play in the series after going 0-for-12 through the first three games.

The Canucks regained the lead on the only goal in the second period, as Alexander Edler smoked a slap shot past Rinne from near the blue line at 9:43. Cody Franson evened the score once more for the Predators at 3:27 of the third, but Kesler notched his second game-winning goal in a row on a power-play opportunity four minutes later.
