    Daily Sports Roundup: May 3

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NBA playoffs continue in Oklahoma City and Miami, while the White Sox play host to the Twins, and the Cubs battle with the Dodgers.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA's playoff schedule for Tuesday has Memphis at Oklahoma City and Boston at Miami, with the Grizzlies and Heat both leading those best-of-seven second-round series 1-0. Memphis won Game 1 of their set 114-101 in Oklahoma City on Sunday afternoon, with Zach Randolph pouring in 34 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Kevin Durant led the way for the Thunder with 33 points and 11 boards in that losing cause. Miami got past Boston 99-90 at home in the opener of their second-round series on Sunday, as Dwayne Wade poured in a game-high 38 points. LeBron James was good for 22 points for the Heat that day; Ray Allen led the Celtics with 25 points in the defeat.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

On the American League schedule for Tuesday it's Toronto at Tampa Bay, the Yankees at Detroit, the Angels at Boston, Baltimore at Kansas City, Cleveland at Oakland, Texas at Seattle, and Minnesota at the White Sox. The Twins will turn to Francisco Liriano (1-4, 9.13 ERA) in that last matchup, while Edwin Jackson (2-3, 5.86 ERA) gets the ball for Chicago. Lefthander Liriano was blasted by the Rays in his most recent start, giving up seven runs on six hits over just three innings of work. Righthander Jackson faced the Yankees last time out, surrendering six runs in four innings of work in a third straight loss.

Over in the National League on Tuesday it's then Washington at Philadelphia, San Francisco at the Mets, Houston at Cincinnati, Milwaukee at Atlanta, Florida at St. Louis, Colorado at Arizona, Pittsburgh at San Diego, and the Cubs at the Dodgers. Chicago's Ryan Dempster (1-3, 9.58 ERA) is slated to take on Los Angeles' Chad Billingsley (2-1, 4.46 ERA) on Tuesday. Righthander Dempster lasted just a third of an inning against the D-Backs in his last start, allowing seven runs on four hits and four walks. Righthander Billingsley took a no-decision against the Marlins last time out (four runs in six innings).

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, there are two games on the NHL's schedule for Tuesday, with Washington at Tampa Bay in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference semfinal, and Vancouver at Nashville in Game 3 of their Western Conference semifinal. The Predators tied up their series with the Canucks 1-1 with a 2-1 road victory in double overtime in Game 2 of the set on Saturday night. Matt Halischuk had the OT winner for Nashville that day, while Pekka Rinne stopped 32 of 33 Vancouver shots. Alex Burrows had the lone marker in the loss for the Canucks, and Roberto Luongo made 44 saves. Oddsmakers have the Canucks pegged as -125 road favorites for Tuesday night's game, with the total listed at 5 goals.

Tuesday's betting tips: Shaq ready for Game 2?

      Weather to watch

Milwaukee Brewers at Atlanta Braves – Meteorologists expect 18 mph winds blowing in from left field and up to a 70 percent chance of precipitation.

      Who’s hot

NBA: Boston has covered in 10 of its last 14 meetings with Miami.

NHL: Washington trails 2-0 in its series against the Lightning, but has won 10 of its last 12 trips to Tampa Bay.

MLB: Minnesota has won 22 of the last 28 meetings between the Twins and White Sox.

MLB: Cleveland has won six straight games.

      Who’s not

NBA: Memphis is 1-4 against the spread in its last five meetings with Oklahoma City.

NHL: Nashville has won only two of its last eight home games against Vancouver.

MLB: Toronto has won just six of its last 29 dates in Tampa Bay.

MLB: Washington is 13-40 in its last 53 games against Philadelphia.

      Key stat

73.3 percent – Memphis’ Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol were way too much for the Thunder to handle in the paint, but the two big men really did a number on them from outside as well. The pair hit 11 of 15 (73.3 percent) combined shots from outside 10 feet. The Grizzlies are set as 6.5-point underdogs for Tuesday’s Game 2 at Oklahoma City.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Shaquille O’Neal, Boston Celtics: Shaq is getting closer to returning to the lineup, but he’s still listed as questionable for Tuesday’s Game 2. O’Neal hasn’t played since April 5 and the Celtics could use him inside after getting pushed around a bit in the first game of the series.

      Game of the day

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat (-5, 182)

      Notable quotable

"A game as big as this game, you rarely see a guy of Paul's caliber thrown out of the game, especially when both guys are having words. One guy basically jumps into his chest. It's just a natural reaction to have words, but you can't get thrown out of the game, especially when your team is trying to make a run." – Jermaine O’Neal after Celtics captain Paul Pierce was ejected with seven minutes remaining in Game 1’s loss to Miami. Pierce picked up two technicals in a span of 57 seconds to earn the early shower.

      Notes and tips

Third baseman Evan Longoria is expected to return to the Tampa Bay Rays’ lineup Tuesday after rehabbing the oblique injury that has kept him sidelined since the first week of the season. Longoria says he expects to be “close to 100 percent” against the Toronto Blue Jays. Tampa Bay is currently set as a -165 favorite.

So far, the Nashville Predators are doing a number on Vancouver’s potent Sedin twins. Daniel and Henrik Sedin have been held without a point through the first two games of the series as Nashville heads home for Game three after earning a split in Vancouver. Daniel led the NHL with 104 points in the regular season and Henrik wasn’t far behind with 94. The Canucks are set as a -125 road favorite.

Real Madrid will be without suspended fullbacks Sergio Ramos and Pepe for Tuesday’s second leg of the Champions League semifinal against Barcelona, while coach Jose Mourinho is also banned following an ejection last week. Mourinho accused officials of trying to help Barcelona through to the May 28 Champions League finals.

        Tuesday's six-pack

Some of the grades Mel Kiper Jr gave out for the NFL Draft......

A+—Detroit—More for getting undervalued players than filling specific needs.

B+-- Cleveland—Added eight players this year, still have another #1 pick from Falcons next spring.

B- Arizona—Likely will trade for/sign a veteran QB after the lockout ends.

C-- Carolina—Mel Kiper had Cam Newton as the #15 overall prospect. Panthers obviously had him as the #1 guy. How long before he is the starter?

C+ Washington—Started with eight picks, wound up with 12 players. Would they really go into the season with Rex Grossman as their starting QB?

D+ Seattle-- Will need to add two QBs to roster as soon as lockout ends; one of them better be able to start right away, or else Charlie Whitehurst is their starting QB.

        ***********************

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...........

        13) Reacting to increased security after Bin Laden’s extinction, the NBA has mandated metal detectors for the rest of its playoff games. Luckily for them, Gilbert Arenas’ team isn’t playing anymore.

        12) TV ratings for the first round of the NBA playoffs were up 32% from LY (Heat/Knicks probably the reason why); NBA seems more popular than its been for years. Good thing they don’t have any labor unres— whoops. Forget I said anything.

        11) “Any lineman from Wisconsin can usually step in and play.” Solid endorsement from Seahawks’ GM John Schneider. Think Coach Bielema will use that in his recruiting spiels?

        10) Pretty cool video on YouTube from St Petersburg Sunday night, as WWE wrestler John Cena tells the crowd about the Bin Laden situation. Some of the crowd probably thought it was part of the act. It wasn’t.

        9) Sunday night was a positive one in this country, unless you’re one of the Republicans preparing to spend millions to run for President in 2012. As they say in Donnie Brasco, “…….fuhget about it…….”

        8) Minnesota’s Scott Baker has made five starts this season; Twins scored exactly three runs in all five games, losing four of them.

        7) We’ve talked a lot about former NC State QB Russell Wilson, who is a free agent and can go anywhere to play his senior year of college football this fall, after the Wolfpack cut him loose. Rumors now have him headed to Auburn. Wilson has his batting average in Asheville up to .226. One of Wilson’s Asheville teammates is former Clemson QB Kyle Parker, who is hitting a cool .368 for the Tourists.

        6) If Seattle Seahawks had a game tomorrow, Charlie Whitehurst would be the only QB to suit up; they’re going to have to add at least two and probably three QBs before training camp.

        5) Greedy bastard update: In the nine days I was out of town, gas crept up from $4.09 to $4.11 a gallon. It was generally around $3.84 a gallon in Las Vegas. When I went to work Monday, it was still $4.11; at 4:15, on the way home, it had risen to $4.17 a gallon. Greedy bastards they are.

        4) Why do the Vikings want Christian Ponder to start right away? Did they watch his games at Florida State? Why do they think he’s that good? One thing for sure, I want to see Tarvaris Jackson get a chance with another NFL team. I’m not convinced he can’t win games in the NFL.

        3) Was curious as to how the stock market would react after the wildest Sunday night we’ve seen in a long time; market stayed roughly the same Monday, finishing just 3.18 points lower.

        2) How does the Maloof family have financial issues? Apparently, they can't afford to move the team to Anaheim, so the Kings will be back in the state capitol of California for at least one more season next fall. When the Maloofs bought the Kings, they inherited a $77 million loan that the previous owner had taken from the city of Sacramento. That loan has yet to be repaid, and the Maloofs can't afford to re-pay it now, so they stay in northern California next season, if there is a season.

        1) Good stat from ESPN.com today: the SEC has won six BCS football titles in the last decade, but if you look at the number of players taken in rounds 1-3 of the NFL Draft, it’s a team without one of those BCS titles that has had the most players taken high in the draft: Georgia 30, Florida 29, LSU 26, Tennessee 25. Go figure.

What bettors need to know: Tuesday's NBA playoff action
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat (-5, 182.5)

                    Miami leads series 1-0

THE STORY: The Miami Heat struck the first blow - now the pressure is on the Boston Celtics to respond. Dwyane Wade got some scoring help from an unlikely source in Game 1, and the Heat managed to jump out early and avoid the struggles that have plagued them at the end of close games en route to a 99-90 victory Sunday. The Celtics saw their leader shown the door and got sub-par performances from two of their All-Stars in their disappointing setback. Miami will be looking to put Boston in an even bigger hole when it hosts Game 2 on Tuesday.

                    TV: 7 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE HEAT: Miami won Game 1 in the first half when Wade went for 23 of his 38 points and the defense held the Celtics to less than 36 percent shooting en route to a 51-36 lead at the break. Every time it looked as though Boston would make a charge late, Wade responded. He converted a three-point play after the Celtics had cut it to 10 with 7:03 left and made spectacular plays down the stretch. LeBron James added 22 points, but it was James Jones who really confounded Boston's defense as he came off the bench to hit 5-of-7 3-point attempts and 10-of-10 free throws for 25 points.

ABOUT THE CELTICS: Ray Allen kept Boston in the game by hitting five 3-pointers and finishing with 25 points. But just as the Celtics looked poised to make another push, Paul Pierce was ejected with 7 minutes left in the fourth quarter. The All-Star set a hard screen on Wade, which drew a double technical for both players, and then said something that got him tossed. With Pierce gone, and Rajon Rondo and Kevin Garnett combining for 14 points, the Celtics did not have it at the end. Rondo, who should be Boston’s biggest advantage going against Mike Bibby on the other side, finished with seven assists and five turnovers.

WHO’S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Chris Bosh was the lone member of Miami’s Big Three to struggle Sunday with seven points on 3-of 10 shooting. Garnett was held to six points on 3-of-9 shooting, and did not get to the free throw line.

KEY STATISTIC: The 3-point barrage extended down both benches in Game 1. The Celtics connected on 12-of-24 attempts from beyond the arc and the Heat converted 9-of-19. Whichever team figures out how to defend the arc will have a leg up in Game 2.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Home team is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.
                    * Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Miami.
                    * Celtics are 10-4 ATS in the last 14 meetings.
                    * Favorite is 14-6 ATS in the last 20 meetings.
                    * Celtics are 16-7 ATS in the last 23 meetings in Miami.

LAST WORD: “We’re going to have to fight for every inch, every game we get,” Wade said. “Right now, we won Game 1. We’re supposed to. We’ll go back and focus on winning Game 2.”

Memphis Grizzlies at Oklahoma City Thunder (-6.5, 198.5)

                    Memphis leads series 1-0

THE STORY: The best player on the Memphis Grizzlies didn’t make the All-Star team this season, and he is punishing teams for the oversight. Forward Zach Randolph scored a career playoff-high 34 points in the opener of the Western Conference semifinals, and will seek a second stellar performance when the eighth-seeded Grizzlies and the No. 4 seed Thunder meet in Tuesday’s Game 2 at Oklahoma City. Thunder star Kevin Durant declared Randolph the “best power forward in the league” after Randolph’s fine showing in Sunday’s series opener, won 114-101 by the upstart Grizzlies. Randolph has scored 25 or more points in five of Memphis’ seven postseason games, including four impressive showings in the Grizzlies’ six-game first-round upset of the top-seeded San Antonio Spurs. Randolph averaged 20.1 points and 12.2 rebounds in the regular season.

ABOUT THE THUNDER: Durant (33 points) and point guard Russell Westbrook (29) combined for 62 points in the opener, and Oklahoma City still lost by double digits. The Thunder were sloppy with the basketball with 18 turnovers, including seven by Westbrook. Forward Serge Ibaka continued his fine postseason with 16 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots, but no other Oklahoma City player scored more than five points in the opener. The Thunder, who only received 16 points from their bench, had won 13 of their last 15 home games.

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES: Randolph, who also had 10 rebounds, wasn’t the only Memphis big man to have his way in the opener. Center Marc Gasol made 9-of-11 field-goal attempts, and had 20 points and 13 rebounds. Gasol repeatedly hit open mid-range jumpers when Oklahoma City sagged inside to double-team Randolph. Memphis committed only seven turnovers and point guard Mike Conley played a solid game with 15 points, seven assists and zero turnovers. The Grizzlies had 11 steals as Randolph led the way with three. Bench players Darrell Arthur and O.J. Mayo struggled as both scored six points on 2-of-7 shooting.

WHO'S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Gasol has recorded three consecutive playoff double-doubles and has averaged 14.3 points and 14.3 rebounds during that span. Durant is averaging 35 points in his last three games.

KEY STATISTIC: Randolph has three 30-point, 10-rebound games against Oklahoma City in five meetings this season.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Over is 6-0 in the last six meetings.
                    * Over is 14-3 in the last 17 meetings in Oklahoma City.
                    * Grizzlies are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

LAST WORD: “You can’t stop him. You’ve got to make him shoot tough shots like he’s been doing, but if he’s making them, he’s tough to stop. He’s an animal.” – Durant on Randolph.

Pick 'n' roll: Tuesday's best NBA bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat (-5, 182.5)

Boston hammered a much different Miami team in five games during last year’s playoffs and won the first three meetings between the teams during the regular season, covering the spread on all three occasions.

But now it is the Heat who appear to have the upper hand. They crushed the Celtics 100-77 at home on April 10 and kicked off the series by rolling to a 99-90 win on Sunday.

If Boston is going to bounce back, it needs to do a better job of containing Dwyane Wade, who scored 38 points in the opener. And it’s not like the Celtics did much to stop him, as Wade made it look surprisingly easy.

“I don't think he hit a lot of tough shots tonight,” Ray Allen told the Palm Beach Post afterward. “He scored within the confines of what they were doing.”

Boston didn't stop James Jones either. They did a decent job at least holding Chris Bosh and LeBron James in check, but it’s going to be a long series for Boston if Jones continues to go off. Miami’s sharp-shooting reserve went for 25 points, draining five threes and all 10 of his free throws.

“I tried to focus in this week because I knew that Boston was going to try and take our big three away and somebody was going to have to step up,” Jones told the Miami Herald.

                      Pick: Heat

Memphis Grizzlies at Oklahoma City Thunder (-6.5, 197.5)

There may be better teams still alive in the NBA Playoffs than Memphis, but no team is playing better relative to its seeding. The eighth-seeded Grizzlies were simply the better squad in a first-round upset of San Antonio and they were way better than Oklahoma City on Sunday.

Playing just two days after ousting the Spurs, Memphis went on the road and took it to the Thunder for a convincing 114-101 victory.

Beating San Antonio clearly wasn’t a fluke and Sunday’s win does not look like a fluke, either. The Grizzlies have now won three in a row against Oklahoma City (3-0 ATS) and four of five this season (4-1 ATS).

Memphis continues to dominate inside. The team scored 52 points in the paint to the Thunder’s 38 and won the rebounding battle against an opponent that prides itself on the glass (albeit by just three boards). Zach Randolph maintained his torrid pace, going for 34 points and 10 rebounds, while Marc Gasol added 20 points and 13 boards.

“That’s our game,” head coach Lionel Hollins told the Memphis Commercial Appeal. “We got to the point where teams have tried to take it away from us and we’ve tried to do different things, but I can’t explain it. This is what we do; play inside-out.”

                      Pick: Grizzlies
