    Daily Sports Roundup: May 2

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Bulls play host to the Hawks, the Mavericks take on the Lakers, and the Bruins and Flyers battle for a second time in Philadelphia.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Two more second-round NBA playoff series get underway on Monday night, with Atlanta at Chicago, and Dallas at the Lakers. The Hawks upset Orlando in six games in their first-round series, and the Bulls got past Indiana in five games in their opening set. Oddsmakers have Chicago listed as an 8.5-point favorite for Monday, with the total pegged at 178.5 points. The Mavericks beat Portland in six games last round, while the Lakers dispatched New Orleans in six games as well in their first-round series. Los Angeles is set as a 6-point home favorite for Monday, with that matchup's total at 188.5.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

On the American League schedule for Monday it's Texas at Oakland, the Angels at Boston, Baltimore at the White Sox, and the Yankees at Detroit. Bartolo Colon (2-1, 2.77 ERA) is slated to take the mound for New York on Monday, while the Tigers counter with Justin Verlander (2-3, 3.64 ERA). Righthander Colon pitched in relief against the Tigers back on April 3, giving up four runs on six hits over four innings of work. Righthander Verlander faced New York on March 31, giving up three runs on three hits in six innings.

Over in the National League on Monday it's San Francisco at Washington, Houston at Cincinnati, Florida at St. Louis, Pittsburgh at San Diego, the Cubs at the Dodgers, and Milwaukee at Atlanta. The Brewers will go with Yovani Gallardo (2-1, 5.70 ERA) on Monday, with Jair Jurrjens (2-0, 1.23 ERA) taking the hill for the Braves. Righthander Gallardo dominated Atlanta in his April 5 start, giving up just two hits in a complete-game shutout. Righthander Jurrjens faced the Padres in his last outing, giving up two runs on nine hits over nine innings that day. Jurrjens has given up just three runs over 22 innings.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there's one game on the NHL's playoff schedule for Monday, with Boston at Philadelphia in the second game in their Eastern Conference semifinal series. The Bruins pounded the Flyers 7-3 in the opening game of the set on Saturday, with David Krejci and Brad Marchand each scoring twice in the victory. Nathan Horton, Gregory Campbell, and Mark Recchi also scored for the Bruins in Game 1, while Tim Thomas made 31 saves. Daniel Briere, Mike Richards, and James van Riemsdyk replied in the loss for the Flyers, and Brian Boucher was pulled after giving up five goals on 23 shots.

      Monday's six-pack

-- Atlanta pinch-hitters were 3-3 Sunday, after coming into the game at 3-39 for the season.

-- Aaric Murray averaged 15.2 points, 7.7 rebounds a game this season for LaSalle; unfortunately for the Explorers, Murray transferred out of LaSalle this week and will now attend West Virginia.

-- Toronto's Jose Bautista is first player ever with 30+ hits, 9+ HRs and 28+ walks in the month of April.

-- Eldrick Woods finished 68th on the PGA Money List LY: right now, he is 64th on the money list. Just another guy.

-- Phillies are 10-0 in day games, 8-9 in night games. Go figure.

-- Mets have given up 18 grand slams since last time they hit one.

      *******************

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.......

      13) I was at En-Joie CC outside Binghamton for a day the only time the now-defunct BC Open had Eldrick Woods in the field; I think it was back in 1996; the crowd around his group was huge. As soon as Woods' group left the 10th tee, the next group came up and I was the only person left there, other than the four caddies and the four players. Seriously, even the marshals had left.

Why do I tell you this? The next group, the one with one nitwit (me) still watching them, had the leader of the tournament in it. Pete Jordan. So I'm sitting there Sunday watching the New Orleans tournament, and who is the caddy for George McNeill, who finished T6th? None other than Pete Jordan, the guy who was leading the BC Open back in 1996.

      12) Jordan is 46, so he's probably priming for the Senior Tour; looking at his career stats, he played in 276 PGA events, made 128 cuts, with 34 top-25 finishes and made himself $2,144,444 in his career- he hasn't been in a PGA event since 2008. Now he's a caddy waiting to turn 50 so he can take a shot at the Senior Tour. Golf ain't an easy way to earn a living.

      11) Roy Oswalt is still with his family in Mississippi, so Phillies likely will skip his turn Tuesday and pitch him against Atlanta next weekend.

      10) ESPN.com reports that Saturday's 15-game schedule was 3rd-lowest scoring day of any 15-game schedule since the major leagues went to 30 teams back in 1998.

      9) Had my first In 'n Out Burger Thursday in Las Vegas; maybe the best milkshake I've ever had, the french fries were excellent, but to be honest, I prefer the Wendy's hamburger. In 'n Out reminds me of the old Carrolls chain that preceded Burger King here in the Albany area. Wendy's burger is a lot bigger. In 'n Out is still pretty darned good, though.

      8) Tampa Bay Rays are 15-12, after once being 0-7; one of the reasons they're good is that they're flexible, with five guys who can play five or more positions. Plus, their pitching has still been good.

      7) Jered Weaver (stomach flu) was scratched from his Sunday start and will pitch in Fenway Monday night instead. Bad luck for Boston, since Weaver was the best pitcher in baseball in April.

      6) Saw my first Australian Rules Football game in quite a while on TV late Saturday night. It used to be a staple on ESPN. Pretty fun game to watch; those are some tough humans playing that game.

      5) Surprising fact; Rams had 6th-most red zone drives in NFL last year; problem is, they had 24th-most red zone TDs, which is why they picked two taller WRs and a tight end. They needed more physical receivers.

      4) Raul Ibanez is in a horrible slump, going 0 for his last 34.

      3) Celtics made 12-24 treys, but still lost 99-90 at Miami, as Heat's four subs were a combined +41. Glen Davis played 22:53, was minus-21.

      2) If you have any friends who root for the Knicks, don't tell them that down in Memphis, Zach Randolph is carrying the Grizzlies as they make a great run in these playoffs. in 2008, Knicks traded Randolph and Mardy Collins to the Clippers for Cuttino Mobley and Tim Thomas. Whoops.

      1) It is May 2, and the Indians have the best record in baseball. Wow.

              Monday, May 2

Under is 14-7 in Eastern games so far, 13-8 in Western games; favorites are 9-13-1 vs spread out west, 6-13-2 in the East.

Chicago won 18 more games than Hawks during season; Rose/Boozer are both banged up for Bulls, who had more time to prepare for this than the Hawks did. Atlanta beat Orlando in six games, with three of the wins by 4 points or less; Hawks will miss PG Hinrich (hamstring) who might be out the entire series. Bulls whacked Indiana in five games, winning home games by 5-6-27 points. First games of series are easiest ones for visitor to steal. Wake Forest alum Teague will get chance to contain Rose.

Dallas-Lakers both finished 57-25; this game would be in Dallas had the Sacramento Kings not blown season finale vs Lakers when it had game won; this is first playoff meeting in 23 years between these two. Lakers won two of three vs Dallas this season. LA dispatched Hornets in last two games, by 16-18 points, after series was 2-2- they won two of three at home in series. Dallas won Games 5-6 over Portland by 11-7 points after blowing huge lead in game at Portland.

What bettors need to know: Monday NBA playoffs
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Chicago Bulls (-8.5, 178)

                  THE STORY
: The top-seeded Chicago Bulls used the heroics of Derrick Rose to secure their first three wins in the opening round. After a brief letdown, they followed with their most dominating performance yet. The fifth-seeded Atlanta Hawks were not even supposed to make it this far, but instead dispatched Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic with relative ease. Now, they are setting up a series that might be even tougher for the Bulls due to the Hawks’ similar personnel up front. Chicago will look to get the upper hand when it hosts Atlanta in the opener of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Monday.

                  TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE BULLS: Chicago’s health is the biggest question right now, as Rose sprained an ankle against the Indiana Pacers in Game 4 and was less effective afterward. How he responds to a week of rest will be a good indication of the Bulls’ chances to advance. Carlos Boozer is ailing as well and has sat out the last two days of practice with turf toe. Neither Rose or Boozer are expected to be out of the starting lineup on Monday. After squandering an opportunity to sweep the Pacers, Chicago dominated Game 5, 116-89, behind 25 points in 30 minutes from Rose and 24 from Luol Deng. The Bulls limited Indiana to 39 percent shooting in the win.

ABOUT THE HAWKS: Atlanta stumbled through the back end of the season, leading many to predict an early exit in the playoffs. Instead, the Hawks jumped out early with a victory at Orlando in Game 1 and ended up winning the series in six games. Atlanta has the bodies up front in Zaza Pachulia, Al Horford and Josh Smith to match up against Joakim Noah, Boozer and Deng - it will just have to find a way to stop Rose on the outside. Joe Johnson will likely get the first crack at defending Rose and it was his 23 points and 10 rebounds in Game 6 that sparked the Hawks to an 84-81 triumph.

WHO’S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Rose averaged 27.6 points against the Pacers despite shooting only 37.1 percent from the field. Jamal Crawford averaged 20.5 points off the bench for Atlanta and shot 46 percent from 3-point range against the Magic.

KEY STATISTIC: 3-point shooting. The Bulls set a franchise playoff record with 14 3-pointers in Game 5 against the Pacers. One of the main reasons the Hawks were able to keep the Magic down was their ability to defend the 3-point line, limiting Orlando to 26.2 percent from beyond the arc in the series.

SEASON SERIES: Atlanta took the first meeting, 83-80, at home on March 2, but the Bulls dominated the other two, winning by an average of 25.5 points. Rose went off for 30 points and 10 assists in a win at Atlanta on Mar. 22.

LAST WORD: The Hawks will likely be without guard Kirk Hinrich to start the series. The veteran was diagnosed with a significant strain to his right hamstring after an MRI on Friday. In Hinrich’s absence, Jeff Teague should get extended minutes.

TRENDS: Atlanta has played under in 13 of its last 16 while eight of the last 11 Hawks-Bulls matchups have also played under.
Atlanta has covered in seven of its last 10 meetings with the Bulls.

Dallas Mavericks at Los Angeles Lakers (-6, 188.5)

                  THE STORY
: The Los Angeles Lakers will attempt to take another step toward a third straight NBA title when they host the Dallas Mavericks in Monday’s opening contest of the Western Conference semifinals. Second-seeded Los Angeles defeated the New Orleans Hornets in six games during the first round and now takes aim at the third-seeded Mavericks, who have advanced to the second round for just the second time since losing in the 2006 NBA Finals. Dallas notched a six-game series victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round.

                  TV: 10:30 p.m. TNT, ABC

ABOUT THE LAKERS: Los Angeles completed its first-round series with New Orleans on Thursday, giving guard Kobe Bryant a little time to rest his ailing left ankle. Bryant is downplaying the injury, but coach Phil Jackson said it is hindering Bryant and won’t go away anytime soon. Bryant averaged 22.5 points in the series against New Orleans and averaged 21.7 points in three games versus Dallas this season. Center Andrew Bynum is playing outstanding basketball. He averaged 15.2 points and 10.3 rebounds and had four double-doubles against New Orleans. Bynum fared well against Dallas this season, shooting 70.4 percent from the field while averaging 16.7 points and 11.7 rebounds. Forward Pau Gasol had a relatively quiet series – he averaged 13.5 points – against the Hornets. Forward Lamar Odom provides big-time production off the bench.

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS: Dallas wrapped up the series against Portland with a road victory on Thursday. It was a crucial breakthrough for the Mavericks as the triumph was just the third in the franchise’s last 21 postseason road games. Forward Dirk Nowitzki scored 20 or more points in all six games against Portland and averaged 27.3 points in the series. Nowitzki averaged 22 points and 10.3 rebounds in three games against Los Angeles this season. Guard Jason Terry averaged 17.3 points against Portland with three 20-point outings and is one of the top sixth men in the NBA. A key player in this series will be center Tyson Chandler, who had a 20-rebound effort in Game 5 against Portland but often disappears in games. Point guard Jason Kidd and forward Shawn Marion are battled-tested playoff veterans. Guard Caron Butler (knee) is unlikely to return to action in the series. He hasn’t played since being injured on Jan. 1.

WHO'S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Terry averaged 21 points over the last two games of the Portland series. Bynum averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds in the final two games of the New Orleans series.

KEY STATISTIC: Both teams played solid defense during their first-round series victories. Dallas held Portland to 88.2 points per game and Los Angeles limited New Orleans to 89.3.

SEASON SERIES: The Lakers won two of the three games, including a 110-82 victory on March 31 in the only game played in Los Angeles. The teams split in Dallas with the Mavericks winning 109-100 on Jan. 19 and the Lakers prevailing 96-91 on March 12.

LAST WORD: “We’re going to have to play a perfect game to beat them. I hope we’re up for that challenge.” – Dallas point guard Jason Kidd on the series against the Lakers.

TRENDS: Dallas is 9-1-1 against the spread in its last 11 games overall.
The road team is 10-4-1 against the spread in the last 15 meetings between the Lakers and Mavericks.

Atlanta Hawks at Chicago Bulls (-8.5, 178)

The top-seeded Bulls have not had any recent trouble against Atlanta.

The Hawks came from behind to win the first game of the regular-season series, 83-80 at home. But the Bulls bounced back later in March for a 94-76 home rout and a 114-81 road thrashing in Atlanta. Even in its lone loss to the Hawks, Chicago led by 17 points at the half before falling asleep.

Derrick Rose dealt with a sprained ankle late in the Indiana series but looked like his usual self in going for 25 points and six assists in the clincher on Tuesday. Rose also has five full days of rest in between games. Carlos Boozer has a case of turf toe, but he should be good to go for Game 1.

Atlanta, on the other hand, will almost certainly be without Kirk Hinrich (strained hamstring) on Monday; he could miss the entire series. The Hawks traded Mike Bibby for Hinrich mainly because Bibby could not guard anyone, and if they don’t have Hinrich to guard Rose it’s going to be a major problem.

“It doesn't change anything at all,” Rose told the Chicago Tribune of Hinrich's absence. “We still have to go out and play. (Jeff) Teague or whoever starts in his spot are good players. They're a real athletic team and play hard together. And they have everything going for them now.”

What the Hawks don’t have going for them is that they have to play the Bulls.

                    Pick: Bulls

Dallas Mavericks at Los Angeles Lakers (-6, 188.5)

Both Dallas and Los Angeles struggled at times in their respective opening-round series, but they heated up at the end. The Mavs rolled over Portland by 11 in Game 5 and put together a workmanlike seven-point victory in the clinching Game 6. The Lakers clobbered New Orleans by 16 in Game 5 and 18 in Game 6.

The result should be a blockbuster series between the two highest remaining seeds in the Western Conference.

L.A. normally has a size advantage over most opponents, but Dallas boasts three seven-footers: Tyson Chandler, Brendan Haywood, and a scorching-hot Dirk Nowitzki.

The injury outlook is relatively clean for both teams. Kobe Bryant is still dealing with a sprained left ankle, but he is not listed on the injury report.

“It still affects him a lot,” head coach Phil Jackson told the Los Angeles Times. “This is not going to go away anytime soon so we're just going to have to be close to what he's doing and monitor it a lot. He'll have a limited amount of practice time and it's something he'll have to do.”

                    Pick: Mavericks
