    Daily Sports Roundup: April 30

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Mariners meet the Red Sox at Fenway Park, the Reds host the Marlins, and the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series battle at Richmond.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

On the American League schedule for Saturday it's the Angels at Tampa Bay, Toronto at the Yankees, Texas at Oakland, Detroit at Cleveland, Minnesota at Kansas City, Baltimore at the White Sox, and Seattle at Boston. The Mariners will send Doug Fister (1-3, 3.19 ERA) to the mound in that last contest; righthander Fister faced the Athletics in his last outing, giving up one run on four hits over six innings of work in a no-decision. The BoSox will counter with John Lackey (2-2, 6.35 ERA) on Saturday. Righthander Lackey dominated the Angels in his last start, tossing eight scoreless innings in the win.

Over in the National League on Saturday it's then the Mets at Philadelphia, St. Louis at Atlanta, San Francisco at Washington, Milwaukee at Houston, Pittsburgh at Colorado, the Cubs at Arizona, San Diego at the Dodgers, and Florida at Cincinnati. The Marlins' Josh Johnson (3-0, 1.06 ERA) will take on the Reds' Edinson Volquez (2-1, 6.35 ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Johnson was stuck with a no-decision against the Rockies in his last start despite giving up just one run over seven innings. Righthander Volquez faced the Cards last time out, giving up three runs over 5 2-3 innings in a loss.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Flyers host the Bruins in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series in NHL playoff action on Saturday, while it's Nashville at Vancouver in Game 2 of that Western Conference semifinal set. The Canucks picked up the win in Game 1 of that series on Thursday, holding on for a 1-0 victory behind 20 saves from Roberto Luongo. Chris Higgins had the lone Vancouver goal in that win, his second of the playoffs. Pekka Rinne blocked 29 of 30 Vancouver shots in a losing cause for the Predators on Thursday.

    Roaring around the track . . .

Finally, the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series hit the track at Richmond International Raceway on Saturday night for the Crown Royal 400. Oddsmakers have Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch, and Jimmie Johnson as the +600 co-favorites to win this week's Cup race, with Jeff Gordon, Denny Hamlin, and Kevin Harvick at +800 odds. Hamlin and Busch have split the last four Cup events at Richmond International Raceway, while Johnson won there three times from 2007 to 2008. Tony Stewart is back at +1000 to get the win on Saturday night, with Clint Bowyer, Matt Kenseth, and Kurt Busch all pegged at +1500.

Saturday's betting tips: Canucks, Preds on Under tear

      Weather to watch

Pittsburgh Pirates at Colorado Rockies – Temperatures will be in the 30s for this 8:10 p.m. ET start, with a 30 percent chance of rain or snow showers.

      Who’s hot

NHL: Boston is 8-3 in its last 11 trips to Philadelphia..

NHL: The Under is 5-0 in the last five Nashville-Vancouver matchups.

MLB: Toronto is 5-0 in Kyle Drabek’s last five starts.

MLB: The Under is 5-1-1 in Boston’s last seven games.

      Who’s not

NHL: Philadelphia is 0-4 in its last four games as a home favorite of -110 to -150.

NHL: Nashville is 5-11 in its last 16 games against Vancouver.

MLB: Texas is 2-7 in Colby Lewis’ last nine road starts.

MLB: Cincinnati is 3-7 in its last 10 games against right-handed starters.

      Key stat

21 – That’s how many power plays the Bruins earned during their first-round series win over Montreal. They didn’t score once. “We’re having trouble getting set up,” Boston general manager Peter Chiarelli said of his team, the only one left in the playoffs yet to cash in on a man-advantage opportunity.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Atlanta Hawks starting point guard Kirk Hinrich (10.2 ppg, 4.0 apg) underwent an MRI on his right leg Friday and the news was bad: a significant hamstring strain. Now Hinrich, who got hurt in Thursday's series clincher over Orlando, is doubtful for the Eastern Conference semifinals. The series begins Monday in Chicago. If Hinrich is out, coach Larry Drew said Jamal Crawford, Joe Johnson, Damien Wilkins and Jeff Teague all could spend time trying to guard MVP favorite Derrick Rose.

      Game of the day

Boston Bruins at Philadelphia Flyers (-125, 5.5)

      Notable quotable

“We had too many guys that I call passengers. There wasn't enough guys pulling their weight and it was not acceptable." – Nashville coach Barry Trotz, ripping his forwards after the team fell 1-0 to Vancouver while losing 19 of 22 faceoffs. The Predators try to redeem themselves in Game 2 at 9 p.m. ET Saturday.

      Notes and tips

By taking care of the Knicks in four straight, the aging Celtics got a full week off before their Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Heat. And after Games 1 and 2 Sunday and Tuesday in Miami, the NBA in its infinite wisdom decided to give the teams three days off to recover from that two-hour flight up the East Coast. Game 3 won’t be until Saturday, May 7. So in Games 1 and 3, the Celts will be playing with at least three days’ rest -- a situation in which they’ve gone 7-0 SU and 5-2 ATS while outscoring their opponents by an average of 15.3 points.

Twins All-Star catcher Joe Mauer, out since April 15 with bilateral leg weakness, has yet to resume baseball activities. He was eligible to come off the DL Thursday but it’s unclear when he’ll be able to play. Not exactly what Minnesota hoped for when it signed the franchise player to an eight-year, $184 million extension in March 2010.

Since the U.S. crackdown on three major online poker sites two weeks ago, player numbers worldwide have dropped by 22 percent, according to the monitoring site PokerScout.com. PokerStars saw a decrease of 28 percent, Full Tilt Poker 35 percent and Absolute Poker/UB 65 percent. However, Bodog Poker traffic is up 32 percent and Cake Poker 30 percent.

Two of the nine most profitable starters in MLB pitch for Cleveland, according to *********** data. Justin Masterson ranked fourth ($518) and Josh Tomlin ninth ($352) heading into Friday’s action. The Angels’ Jered Weaver led the way with a $601 profit, followed by the Blue Jays’ Kyle Drabek ($561) and the Tigers’ Max Scherzer ($550).

What bettors need to know: Saturday's NHL playoff action
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Philadelphia Flyers (-125, 5.5)

                THE STORY
: Everyone knows the story, regardless if you live in Beantown or the City of Brotherly Love. Of course, the tone of the tale will take an interesting turn whether one prefers chowder or cheesesteaks. Last year, the Philadelphia Flyers overcame a 3-0 deficit to win the final four games of their Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Boston Bruins. The Flyers would skate all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, while the Bruins skated home with their tails between the legs. Fast forward to the present, the same two teams will meet again the conference semifinals - with Game 1 slated for Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia.

                TV: 3 ET, NBC, CBC

ABOUT THE FLYERS: Second-seeded Philadelphia needed to win the final two contests to claim a seven-game series victory over the upstart Buffalo Sabres in the conference quarterfinals. A goaltending carousel was used as coach Peter Laviolette's club overcame injuries to defenseman Chris Pronger (hand) and star right wing Jeff Carter (knee) to emerge victorious. Aesthetically pleasing, it was not - but the Atlantic Division champions seem to have righted the ship behind Brian Boucher. The 34-year-old Rhode Island netminder, who is 7-6-1 in his career against the Bruins, will start Game 1. James van Riemsdyk led the NHL with 43 shots during the quarterfinals.

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Third-seeded Boston was able to overcome losing the first two games of its series with the rival Montreal Canadiens to win the set in seven. Prior to that accomplishment, the Bruins had dropped all 26 of such series. Nathan Horton is certainly enjoying his first foray into the postseason. He netted overtime winners in Games 5 and 7. Patrice Bergeron notched a team-high seven points and 22 hits against the Canadiens. Vezina Trophy finalist Tim Thomas has stymied the Flyers during his career, posting a 10-2-2 mark with a 2.19 goals-against average.

WHO'S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Philadelphia's Daniel Briere is tied with Anaheim Ducks veteran Teemu Selanne for the NHL lead with six playoff goals. Boston left wing Chris Kelly collected three goals and three assists during the last five games of the quarterfinal series.

SPECIAL TEAMS: The Flyers scored on just 2-of-26 power-play opportunities prior to Pronger's return. They went 3-for-7 with the veteran blue-liner quarterbacking the power play. Boston failed to score on all 21 opportunities with the man advantage. In fact, the Bruins even permitted a shorthanded goal in Game 7.

SEASON SERIES: Boston posted a 3-0-1 mark against Philadelphia this season. The Bruins recorded a 3-0 road victory on Dec. 1, but the Flyers answered with a 2-1 overtime road win 10 days later. Boston then secured a 7-5 home win on Jan. 13 and a 2-1 road victory on March 27.

                TRENDS:

                * Under is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings in Philadelphia.
                * Bruins are 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in Philadelphia.
                * Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
                * Underdog is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
                * Road team is 4-1 in the last five meetings.

LAST WORD: "We stuck together after being down 2-0 in the series and battling back. You know we took advantage of our home ice. We worked hard to get back in this position. I give the guys a lot of credit. We believed in each other, we trusted each other and found a way to win." - Boston's Mark Recchi, on his team's resolve against the Canadiens.

Nashville Predators at Vancouver Canucks (-199, 5)

                Vancouver leads series 1-0

THE STORY: The Nashville Predators hope for a much better effort from their forwards Saturday when they take on the Presidents' Trophy-winning Vancouver Canucks in Game 2 of their Western Conference semifinal series at Rogers Arena. Even though Vancouver had just one day of rest after its hard-fought, seven-game quarterfinal matchup with Chicago, fifth-seeded Nashville appeared to be the team that was emotionally drained in Thursday's series opener. If not for the spectacular play of Vezina Trophy finalist Pekka Rinne, the Predators' margin of defeat would have been much larger than the 1-0 outcome.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, Versus, CBC, RDS

ABOUT THE CANUCKS: For the second time in as many series openers this postseason, Chris Higgins scored the first goal of the game and Vezina finalist Roberto Luongo recorded a shutout. Higgins' goal with 7:46 remaining in the second period Thursday should have been Vancouver's third or fourth tally of the night considering how dominant it had been up to that point in the contest. The Canucks outshot the Predators 16-5 over the first 20 minutes and won 22 of 25 faceoffs in the session. Luongo was not tested often in registering his third career playoff shutout, facing only 11 shots over the first two periods as much of the play was in Nashville's zone.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS: Coach Barry Trotz pinned the Game 1 loss squarely on the shoulders of his forwards, stating there were "too many passengers" in the first second-round playoff game in franchise history. Nashville had no right being involved in a scoreless tie through the first 32 minutes Thursday, but that's the situation it found itself thanks to the tremendous performance by Rinne. Bad passing, poor defensive coverage and the inability to generate offensive chances over the initial two periods had the Predators resembling an amateur club clearly in over its head against an NHL powerhouse. Yet when Mike Fisher raced toward Luongo on a shorthanded breakaway early in the third, he had the opportunity to tie the game. Nashville can draw confidence for Game 2 in the fact it played one of its worst games of the season and still trailed by only one goal right until the final buzzer.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: Predators captain Shea Weber, a finalist for the Norris Trophy, led his team with three shots on goal Thursday - a testament to how poorly Nashville's forwards performed. Patric Hornqvist committed three of the Predators' five penalties, one in each period. Vancouver's Sedin twins were kept off the scoresheet but not for the lack of effort as they shared the team lead with six shots apiece.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Each club received five power-play opportunities in Game 1 and failed to score. Nashville is 6-for-32 (18.8 percent) overall in the postseason while Vancouver has converted 17.4 percent (4-for-23) of its chances.

                TRENDS:

                * Under is 4-0 in the last four meetings in Vancouver.
                * Under is 5-0 in the last five meetings.
                * Favorite is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
                * Predators are 5-11 in the last 16 meetings.
                * Predators are 6-14-1 in the last 21 meetings in Vancouver.

LAST WORD: "I think our whole game is an area of concern right now. That was not Predators-style hockey, and we need to change things in a hurry." - Nashville captain Shea Weber on his team's performance Thursday.

Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Philadelphia Flyers (-125, 5.5)

The Bruins earned points in all four regular-season meetings with Philadelphia and won three of them, but they still have a long way to go to avenge what happened in 2010. At the same stage of last year’s Eastern Conference playoffs, Boston held a 3-0 lead before the Flyers stormed back to take the series.

Both teams have recent experience in seven-game series. Philadelphia took out Buffalo in a decisive Game 7 clash on Tuesday, and Boston edged Montreal in overtime one day later in Game 7.

The Bruins have one fewer day of rest, had to travel (albeit a short distance), and three of their last four games against the Canadiens went to overtime. Needless to say, they could be gassed Saturday.

They also will have to deal with a Philly attack finding its stride. The Flyers scored five goals in each of their last two contests against Buffalo and a big reason for the recent scoring binge is James Van Riemsdyk. He scored four goals in the series and put an incredible 43 shots on the net.

“JVR has started to take off,” head coach Peter Laviolette told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Furthermore, Jeff Carter (lower body injury) could return after missing the last three games against the Sabres. Carter, who is listed as questionable for Game 1, led the Flyers with 36 regular-season goals.

                  Pick: Philadelphia

Nashville Predators at Vancouver Canucks (-196, 5)

The Canucks on Thursday showed no lingering effects from a brutal series against Chicago in which it nearly choked away a 3-0 lead. Instead, Vancouver followed up the Game 7 win with a 1-0 shutout of Nashville in the series opener.

Roberto Luongo picked up where he left off after holding the Blackhawks to one goal in an overtime victory on Tuesday. He stopped all 20 shots he faced as the Canucks fought off five Predator power plays.

“When we came into the season, we didn’t come in here to beat the Hawks,” Luongo told Slam! Sports. “We wanted to take a run at the Cup and think we have the team to do it. We’ve got bigger and better things we want to accomplish.”

With Luongo in goal, Vancouver has a good chance of ousting Nashville. Luongo had a 1.77 GAA against the Preds in four regular-season games. All five meetings between the two teams this season have gone under the total.

                  Pick: Under

Hot lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Marlins at Cincinnati Reds (110, 7.5)

Josh Johnson went 11-6 with a 2.30 ERA in 2010. This season, he has been even better.

The right-hander, who takes the mound Saturday for Florida, is 3-0 with a miniscule 1.07 ERA through five starts. He has struck out 33 batters in 34 innings and his WHIP is a ridiculous 0.65.

“He’s developed that curveball to a point where you have to be aware of it,” one National League scout told the Sporting News. “His fastball comes in at mid-90s, so to be able to throw a hook and changeup at lower speeds, and locate all those pitches with his slider, it makes him almost unhittable.”

The Marlins (16-8) have won 11 of their last 14 after Friday's 7-6 win in Cincinnati, which fell to 13-13.

The Reds, meanwhile, are countering with Edinson Volquez. It has been tough going for the righty so far, as he owns a 2-1 record but sports a disappointing 6.35 ERA. Volquez has not lasted more than six innings in any of his five starts.

                        Pick: Marlins

Baltimore Orioles at Chicago White Sox (-136, 9)

Philip Humber should be throwing with a ton of confidence on Saturday.

The Chicago right-hander is coming off one of the best outings of his career Monday at New York. He befuddled the Yankees for seven innings, allowing just one hit while picking up the win in a 2-0 victory.

“I think everybody takes a different path and mine has been a little bit winding,” Humber told the New York Daily News. “I think I'm more mentally and emotionally prepared to be a major league player than I was when I was with the Mets and even with the Twins. I feel like I turned the corner last year and got my focus where it needs to be.”

The White Sox seem to be refocusing as well, although they still register with a dismal 10-17 record. Ozzie Guillen’s squad managed to take two of four in the Bronx before losing 10-4 to the Orioles on Friday.

Baltimore, which is sending Chris Tillman (0-2, 6.16 ERA) to the mound, has lost 12 of its last 17.

                        Pick: White Sox
