What bettors need to know: Friday's NHL playoff action
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Lightning at Washington Capitals (-170, 5.5)

      THE STORY
: The Tampa Bay Lightning have certainly received all they could ask for and more out of Dwayne Roloson. Acquired from the New York Islanders on New Year's Day for prospect Ty Wishart, Roloson has stopped 144 of the last 151 shots he faced - including all 36 in a 1-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. The 41-year-old netminder will need to continue his stingy play when he leads the fifth-seeded Lightning into the Verizon Center to face the top-seeded Washington Capitals in Game 1 of their semifinal series on Friday. The Capitals won four of the six meetings between the Southeast Division rivals this season. In addition, they have also skated to victory in nine of their last 11 against the Lightning at home.

      TV: 7 ET, VERSUS, TSN

ABOUT THE CAPITALS: Washington was in an unfamiliar role after eliminating the eighth-seeded New York Rangers in five games. Instead of answering questions about yet another early exit in the playoffs, coach Bruce Boudreau's club could enjoy a bit of rest before beginning its next series. The rest could prove to be incredibly helpful to stud defenseman Mike Green, who got his bell rung in Game 5. Although he returned to the bench after blocking a shot, Green did not re-enter the contest. Michal Neuvirth provided consistent goaltending during the series, posting a Kate Moss-like thin 1.38 goals-against average. The 23-year-old netminder won both of his career decisions against the Lightning.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING: Roloson enjoyed considerable success against the Capitals this season. Playing in his first game with his new team, Roloson turned aside all 34 shots he faced in a 1-0 win over Washington on Jan. 4. Eight days later, he stopped all 23 shots in a 3-0 triumph over the Southeast Division champions. Hart Trophy finalist Martin St. Louis led the Lightning with eight points (four goals, four assists) against the Penguins, while Simon Gagne (two goals, five assists) and Steve Downie (one goal, six assists) added seven points apiece. Captain Vincent Lecavalier recorded two of the team's four game-winning goals against the Penguins.

WHO'S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Tampa Bay's Sean Bergenheim collected three goals and four assists during the last four games of the quarterfinal series. Bergenheim netted the lone goal in Game 7. Washington superstar Alex Ovechkin led the Capitals with six points (three goals, three assists) and a team-leading 23 hits against the Rangers. Jason Chimera had two of Washington's four game-winning goals in the series.

SPECIAL TEAMS: The Lightning stopped 34 of 35 shorthanded situations against the Penguins in their quarterfinal series. Tampa Bay also scored on eight of its 27 power-play opportunities. For its part, Washington went 3-for-16 with the man advantage while stopping 19 of 20 shorthanded situations.

SEASON SERIES: The Capitals skated to a 6-3 home win on Nov. 11 and returned for a 6-0 home triumph on Nov. 26. Tampa Bay countered with a 1-0 road overtime victory on Jan. 4 and a 3-0 home win eight days later. Washington answered with a 5-2 road victory on Feb. 4 and a 2-1 road shootout win on March 7.

      TRENDS:

      * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
      * Favorite is 15-5 in the last 20 meetings.
      * Lightning are 6-20 in the last 26 meetings.
      * Lightning are 2-9 in the last 11 meetings in Washington.

LAST WORD: Tampa Bay became the fourth team in the last three years to overcome a 3-1 series deficit to advance in the NHL playoffs.

Detroit Red Wings at San Jose Sharks (-119, 5.5)

      THE STORY
: Two familiar foes do battle in second-round playoff action as the Detroit Red Wings take on the host San Jose Sharks. The Red Wings are coming off an impressive four-game sweep of the Phoenix Coyotes and have had the most time off of any second-round participant. The Sharks needed six emotional games to dispatch the rival Los Angeles Kings.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, Versus, TSN

ABOUT THE SHARKS: Joe Thornton's series-clinching overtime goal against the Kings in Game 6 - and the joyous backslide that followed - are now distant memories for the Sharks, who must now gear up for a showdown with the formidable Wings. San Jose has had Detroit's number in recent history, winning three of four regular-season meetings and having eliminated the Red Wings in five games in last year's conference semifinals. But the Sharks know that Detroit is no pushover, having been to the Stanley Cup finals in 2009 and 2010 and boasting one of the deepest lineups in hockey. San Jose will be led by Thornton, rookie sniper Logan Couture and veteran Ryane Clowe, who led the Sharks with seven points in Round 1.

ABOUT THE RED WINGS: Detroit's core forwards and defensemen are finally healthy following an injury-marred campaign, and that could spell trouble for the Sharks. The Red Wings appear ready to toss out the regular season results, given that they weren't full strength for any of them. Detroit rolled over the Coyotes in the opening round, scoring 4 1/2 goals per game while getting tallies from 13 different players. Netminder Jimmy Howard wasn't a world-beater against the Coyotes, registering a 2.50 goals-against average and .920 save percentage. But playing behind an offense featuring the likes of Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg and a defense anchored by Niklas Lidstrom, Howard didn't have to be.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: Thornton had six points and was a plus-5 in four games against the Red Wings this season. Datsyuk had four points in the opening round and was a plus-6, tied for the best rating on the team.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Detroit struck four times in 15 power-play opportunities for a 26.7-percent success rate. The Sharks will need to be better than they were in the first round after going just 2 for 23 with the man advantage against the Kings.

SEASON SERIES: San Jose won the final three regular-season meetings after dropping the opener Nov. 30. San Jose has won seven of the last 10 encounters overall.

      TRENDS:

      * Over is 7-2 in the last nine meetings.
      * Over is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in San Jose.
      * Red Wings are 1-4 in the last five meetings in San Jose.
      * Red Wings are 2-8 in the last 10 meetings.

LAST WORD: "It's a very talented team. You have guys like Thornton, (Dany) Heatley, (Dan) Boyle, and (Patrick) Marleau, guys who can score. Good goaltender (Antti Niemi). Up and down, it's a talented team and it won't be easy." - Detroit's Niklas Kronwall speaking to the Detroit News about San Jose's overall skill.

Ice picks: Friday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Lightning at Washington Capitals (-170, 5.5)

The Lightning are making a quick turnaround, having prevailed in Game 7 at Pittsburgh on Wednesday and now paying a visit to Washington on Friday. On the other hand, the Capitals took care of the Rangers in five games and ended that series last Saturday.

“It’s been good,” Matt Hendricks told the Washington Post of the time off. “We’re getting the rest we needed. The best thing about this is, now you can get that anxiety going again, you get that feeling, that tingle when you’re ready to go. You could feel it in practice; the guys were working hard and the tempo was very high. It’s an exciting time and you could sense it.”

The Caps probably won’t mind getting Tampa Bay in Round 2. While the Lightning have a ton of momentum from coming back from 3-1 down in the first round, it came at the expense of a Pittsburgh squad that was decimated by key injuries. Plus, Washington went 4-2 against the Lightning during the regular season, won the last two, and won one matchup by a 6-0 margin.

Michal Neuvirth is heating up in goal for the Capitals. He has not allowed more than three goals in a game since April 2. The 23-year-old posted a 1.38 GAA against the Rangers in Round 1 and recorded a .946 save percentage with one shutout.

        Pick: Capitals

Detroit Red Wings at San Jose Sharks (-120, 5.5)

So far the path has been the same for Detroit as last year’s playoffs - beat Phoenix in Round 1, go up against San Jose in the conference semis.

In 2010, though, the Red Wings needed seven games to get past the Coyotes. They started the series against San Jose two days later and lost three straight games 4-3 before falling in five. This time around a well-rested Detroit team swept Phoenix.

“Last year, they played at Phoenix; 48 hours later they were in San Jose playing Game 1,” ESPN’s E.J. Hradek noted. “For me, last year Detroit was beat up, they were worn out; tough first-round series, older team. This year, well-rested, Henrik Zetterberg didn't even play in the first round, coming back healthy; Pavel Datsyuk has been terrific; Nick Lidstrom played fewer minutes and should be rested and ready to go.”

All of that may be well and good in the long run, but the bottom is line is that the Red Wings have not played since April 20. It’s going to take some time to get back into game mode, and that’s not a luxury against a San Jose team that has won three in a row in the head-to-head series and finished off Los Angeles in Game 6 on Monday.

The Sharks scored a total of 16 goals in their final three victories over the Kings and Joe Thornton is on a roll. He tallied points in each of his last four games, including the series-clinching goal in overtime.

        Pick: Sharks

Hot lines: Friday’s best MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seattle Mariners at Boston Red Sox (-190, 9)

All of a sudden, the Mariners are putting a pile of crooked numbers on the board.

They’re coming off a three-game sweep of the Tigers in which they outscored Detroit 24-6 and they have now won five of their last seven heading into this weekend’s series in Beantown.

Miguel Olivo smacked a solo homer in Thursday’s 7-2 win and ended up going 7-for-13 with six runs scored in the series, while Justin Smoak finished with eight RBIs in the three games.

“It just doesn’t happen over night,” manager Eric Wedge said of the offensive outburst. “There’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes with these guys. You baby step in the right direction, you put up better at-bats, make more productive outs and then you start to see some results. And that’s what I think you’re seeing.”

The Mariners will have to zone-in if they’re going get to Daisuke Matsuzaka, who’s coming off a pair of sparkling starts. Consistency has never been Dice-K’s forte though and we’ll take a flyer with Seattle to lead off the series.

                    Pick: Seattle

Pittsburgh Pirates at Colorado Rockies (-185, 8.5)

Maybe a few matchups against the Pittsburgh Pirates is just what Rockies slugger Carlos Gonzalez needs to get going.

Gonzalez is hitting just .214 with home run this season and is mired in an 0-for-22 slump heading into Friday’s game. For a guy that finished third in NL MVP voting last year, he thinks it’s only a matter of time before he starts spanking the cover off the ball.

"It's going to come," Gonzalez told the Rockies' official website. "I'm really glad it's still April, and I'm really glad the team is playing well. It's not like a lot of pressure, because the team's not winning. ... We're lucky."

They got some more good luck when a rain-out in Chicago on Wednesday gave them an extra day of rest. This price is too steep to jump on Colorado, but we’ll gladly take the over.

                    Pick: Over
