Hot lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas City Royals at Cleveland Indians (-135, 8.5)

When the Indians and Royals got together last week, it was a shocking meeting of two of the American League’s best teams. The Indians split a four-game set against Kansas City and currently lead the Majors having piled up 7.29 units for the club’s supporters already.

Lots of people are still waiting for the Tribe’s hot start to come to an end, but don’t write them off too soon. One mark of a good team is how it handles losing streaks.

Cleveland just dropped three straight before returning home to host the Royals again.

"We've got to get back home and start winning some games," manager Manny Acta told the team's official website. "We all know that everybody's going to win 60 and lose 60. It's what you do with the other 42 that counts. It's a long season, we've just got to keep on playing."

The Indians responded with another sound beating of Kansas City on Tuesday and we like their chances with Josh Tomlin on the hill looking to improve on his 2-0 record.

          Pick: Indians

Chicago White Sox at New York Yankees (-150, 9.5)

How about the defense and pitching in this series so far?

After Paul Konerko swatted a two-run jack to give the White Sox a 3-2 lead over the Yanks in the eighth inning of Tuesday’s win, defensive substitute Brent Lillibridge made a couple of sparkling plays in right field to preserve the victory for Chicago.

The Yanks have now put just two runs on the board over the first two games of the series and runs could be at a premium again on Wednesday. Bartolo Colon looked great in his first start of the year, giving up just two runs over 6 2/3 innings while striking out six against the Jays, while Mark Buehrle’s just doing his Mark Buehrle thing.

The Yanks look pretty tempting to bounce back considering the way the second game of the series ended, but we’ll stick with the under.

          Pick: Under

Under is 13-5 in Eastern games so far, 11-6 in Western games; favorites are 7-10 vs spread out west, 5-11-2 in the East.

Miami is 6-1 vs Philly this season, winning by 10-9-12-8-21-6, covering four of the seven, with five of seven staying under total. Heat won ten of last twelve games overall (8-4 vs spread). Sixers lost eight of their last ten games (2-8 vs spread) with nine of ten staying under. If you look at the Miami shooting other than James/Wade in Game 4, Heat was 10-37 from the floor. Miami shot under 40% for first time in series.

Memphis is 8-0 vs spread when playing Spurs this year; they're 13-3 vs spread in last 16 games overall. Spurs are 5-11 in last 16 games; they're
+16 in series with Ginobili on floor, -34 without him. Grizzlies had nine guys score 9+ points in Game 4, making over 50% from floor for second time in series. Spurs have 125-103 edge in foul shots in first four games. Its oversimplifying, but Memphis just looks quicker than the Spurs.

After making 17-55 from arc in first three series games, Denver made 9 of 19 in Game 4, staying alive, but they were still under 40% for third straight game. Lack of a bigtime star who can get his own shot isn't good in the NBA; Denver missed Anthony here. Oklahoma City won eight of its last ten games, five of last seven vs Denver. Interesting that Denver shot 159 free throws in series so far, Thunder 129.

Wednesday's List of 13: Quick random midweek thoughts........

                    13) Mob Wives might be the funniest show on TV, if you like listening to women with anger management issues.

                    12) Rick Pitino is out as coach of the Puerto Rican national team, due to scheduling conflicts. Maybe he'll make it to Saratoga this summer.

                    11) I thought Jake Locker would be a terrific pro QB, but never saw it when he played last season; just not an accurate enough passer.

                    10) There is no better play-by-play guy in any sport than Mike Emrick doing NHL games. He's tremendous.

                    9) Lot of NFL guys get big money to attend off-season conditioning, like Jay Cutler, who gets $500,000 if he attends 90% of the Bears' sessions.

                    8) Eldrick Woods is out for a while with a bum left leg; I'm thinking he is never going to win another tournament. His body is breaking down.

                    7) Vancouver's OT win last night in a Game 7 was first time in last eight Game 7's that went OT that the home team won.

                    6) Do college football coaches owe it to their star QBs to get them at least some work taking snaps from center? It helps prepare them for the NFL.

                    5) By 8:20 Tuesday night, Jack Hannahan and Wilson Ramos had already homered twice each; what were the odds of that happening?

                    4) ESPN's Todd McShay has Arkansas QB Mallett dropping into the 3rd round, as the ghost of Ryan Leaf hovers over Mallett. We'll see on that.

                    3) There was much rejoicing in the sportsbook when Vancouver won that game in OT last night; lot of Canuck fans in the house.

                    2) Why is Game 7 of the Boston-Montreal series back-to-back? Its first NHL playoff game played on consecutive nights. Just doesn't seem right.

                    1) White Sox defensive replacement Brent Lillibridge made two excellent catches in rightfield to save the day for Chicago Tuesday night; they were the last two plays of the game.
