MLB run report: Red Sox playing catch up
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in Major League Baseball.

        HOT TEAM: Boston Red Sox

        THIS SEASON: 10-11
        LAST WEEK: 6-1

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Orioles for three, home to the Mariners for three.

THE SKINNY: The panic button was hit in Beantown by the Fenway Faithful for sure, but most bettors probably figured this rock ‘em, sock ‘em group would come around. For those that hung in and waited Boston’s early-season skid out, you were rewarded last week with some brilliant pitching and decent offense. The Red Sox posted two shutouts and allowed fewer than three runs two more times while inching to within one game of the .500 mark. There’s a good chance they surpass that line this week, and who knows, they may never look back. After all, Baltimore and Seattle are a mess, with 27 losses between them. And keep in mind, the Red Sox have a day to rest on Monday to prepare for these two bottom feeders.

        COLD TEAM: San Diego Padres

        THIS SEASON: 8-14
        LAST WEEK: 1-6

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Braves for three, at the Dodgers for three.

THE SKINNY: The Padres are going to struggle for offense in the Post-Adrian Gonzalez Era, clearly. But this past week was a disaster. The Padres were shut out three times and held to just one run two more times. Granted, four games vs. the fearsome Phillies will do that to a team, but nevertheless, you have to be concerned about their ability to win games in that big of a home ballpark with that weak of a lineup. Catcher Nick Hundley is off to a decent start with 10 RBIs, but no one else is in double figures yet. Plus, there’s more bad news on the way: The Braves - who won the National League Wild Card berth last year, only to struggle out of the gate this year - seem to be catching a rhythm. In fact, they will stroll into Petco Park with a three-game winning streak. Look out.

        OVER TEAM: Los Angeles Dodgers

        O/U THIS SEASON: 14-6-3
        O/U LAST WEEK: 5-1-1

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Marlins for three, home to the Padres for three.

THE SKINNY: Well, the team may be a mess in the front office and who knows where the players’ paychecks are going to come from over the long haul, but the Dodgers are clicking in the over category. The starting staff still has some punch and that is keeping the totals down a bit, but the offense has found its groove and that’s meant quite a few paydays for over players. Matt Kemp, for instance, is batting .402 with five home runs and 17 RBIs, and the Dodgers scored at least seven runs in the last three games. Be careful this week though, as the Marlins and Padres aren’t loaded in the bats department, and the Dodgers may have to do all of the offensive work themselves to keep this over train rolling.

        UNDER TEAM: Tampa Bay Rays

        O/U THIS SEASON: 6-16
        O/U LAST WEEK: 3-4

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Twins for three, home to the Angels for three.

THE SKINNY: The Rays were pure gold early on in underland as they were struggling to replace Manny Ramirez. They’ve gotten a bit better with the bats, but they are still worth a long look for under players and this week’s series vs. Minnesota could be a doozy. After all, the Twins have only six overs themselves this season and that might mean some easy cash with these two anemic lineups battling head to head. Johnny Damon has 17 RBIs but is batting just .246 and when Sam Fuld is your leading hitter - he has a .365 average that’s sure to come down - you’re going to have some problems. In four of their last eight games, the Rays have scored two runs or less. Tough to see that stretch ending anytime soon.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Mets at Washington Nationals (-130, 7.5)

Mets third baseman David Wright slumped through an 0-for-20 skid earlier this season but that seems like a long time ago now. Wright drilled two homers and drove in three runs in New York’s 8-4 victory over Arizona on Sunday.

"He wasn't feeling right at the plate, and these games like this, you're going to have good and bad stretches," right fielder Carlos Beltran told reporters of Wright, who’s now hitting .262 with five homers and 14 RBIs. "You have to understand that the season is a long season and believe in your talent. He's a very talented player. Every year he does his thing. Maybe he was a little frustrated, but today he's fine."

So is New York’s starting pitching for a change.

Each of the Mets’ last six starters have lasted at least six innings and the club has won four straight heading into Chris Young’s outing on Tuesday. Young held the Nats to just one hit over seven innings the last time he took the hill.

          Pick: Mets

Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles (+110, 9)

What a difference a couple weeks makes in the MLB season.

Not long ago all everyone was talking about was how terrible the Red Sox were and the surprising start the Orioles were enjoying. A lot has changed since then.

The Orioles have won just two of their last 13 games overall as they have fallen back to earth after jumping out to a quick start. The Yankees really rubbed some salt in the wounds when they took the O’s to the woodshed on Saturday in a 15-3 blowout.

"We got after them, competed," Showalter told reporters after Sunday’s 11th-inning loss to New York. "After last night, I was proud of the way everybody came out and got after it."

And with that, we’re back to the same old story with the Orioles – try hard, but don’t expect too much.

Meanwhile, Boston has won eight of its last nine. Clay Buchholz is having some problems with location, but that isn’t scaring us off at this price.

          Pick: Red Sox

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

                      13) Power went out in the hotel last night; nothing like being in 25th floor of a hotel with no power, while the wind whips at the window outside. It might be the only way to get a good night's sleep in Las Vegas. As a result, I'm posting stuff late today.

                      12) I've said this before; the NHL playoffs are the best of any pro sport. Hockey is an underrated sport.

                      11) Jorge Posada is hitting .145 as the Bronx DH; six of his nine hits have been home runs.

                      10) Jeff Francoeur is second in the American League in RBI? Wow.

                      9) Memo to Denver Nuggets: #35 on Oklahoma City is pretty good. You might want to make sure you guard him on every possession. Last night, they got away with leaving him open a few times; on the road, they won't be so lucky unless they defend Kevin Durant better than that.

                      8) I can't stand Pam Oliver as a sideline reporter; she is negative, always trying to stir the pot and create controversy. Not good.

                      7) Rice Owls won the 2003 national championship in baseball, then had three of their pitchers taken in the first eight picks of the MLB Draft; the three pitchers: Jeff Niemann, Phil Humber and Wade Townsend, none of whom has turned out to be a stellar major league hurler.

                      6) Knicks took Renaldo Balkman with 20th pick of the '06 NBA Draft; it wouldn't be so bad if the Celtics didn't take Rajan Rondo with pick #21.

                      5) I'm curious as to how many changes NBA teams make between games; new plays, new ways of doubling the post, stuff like that. There is lot of time between games; you could put new stuff in for every game.

                      4) Looks like UCLA/Texas' hoop teams got hurt most by early entries to the NBA Draft. Not sure either will be in top 25 next fall.

                      3) It'll be a Kiper-ama on ESPN this week, as Mel Kiper, Draft Expert is on display with his vast knowledge of each and every prospect in thr draft later this week. The man knows his stuff.

                      2) Jered Weaver is 6-0, 0.99, clearly the month's best pitcher.

                      1) Immense amount of pressure on the Vancouver Canucks tonight:
-- They led series 3-0; it is now 3-3.
-- The last two President's Cup winners lost in the first round.
-- They're playing the defending Stanley Cup champs.
-- Their backup goalie got hurt when he got the hockey equivalent of his ankles broken on a penalty shot in Game 6. Luongo, the regular goalie, has not played well in this series.
-- Vancouver has never won the Stanley Cup; this is their best team ever.
