        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Braves at San Francisco Giants (-153, 6.5)

Two teams still searching for their offense send a pair of aces to the mound for a Saturday afternoon game in San Francisco.

Tim Hudson takes the mound for the Braves against the Giants’ Tim Lincecum.

The Braves have had moderate success against Lincecum, with current Atlanta players hitting .274 against the young righthander.

In contrast, the Giants have done nothing against Hudson. Hudson is 1-0 with an anemic 1.20 ERA in two starts over the last three years against the Giants.

The price isn’t as high you’d normally get when going against Lincecum, but in what appears destined to be a close game, we’ll take our chances on the Braves finding a way to scratch out a winning run.

        Pick: Braves

Washington Nationals at Pittsburgh Pirates (NL)

After Friday’s game was rained out, veteran Nationals’ starter Livan Hernandez will be extra fresh. That’s bad news for the host Pirates.

Hernandez has won back-to-back starts, allowing only one run with nine strikeouts and no walks in 13.2 innings.

Hernandez has not had a lot of success at PNC Park, going 1-4 and he’s just 5-5 with a 5.52 ERA for his career against the Pirates.

But with the Pirates scrounging for a starter and throwing the erratic Jeff Karstens on the mound, we can’t help but think the Nationals, with Hernandez, have the most value.

        Pick: Nationals

                Write-Up

                Saturday, April 23

Under is 8-4 in Eastern games so far, 5-5 in Western games; favorites are 4-6 vs spread out west, 2-9-1 in the East.

Chicago won six of seven against the Pacers this year, with under 3-0 in this series; Bulls won their last twelve games overall, with seven of last nine staying under- they're 5-9-1 vs spread in last 15 games as a favorite. Indiana is 8-4-1 vs spread in last thirteen games as an underdog, but they are still getting killed on boards here, giving up 51 offensive boards in three games. Other than Granger, Pacer starters were 11-41 in Game 3.

Home side won all seven Portland-Dallas games, with Blazers covering five of seven. Roy came off bench and scored 16 points in 23:39 of win in Game 3, as Blazers forced 16 Dallas turnovers, after forcing total of 19 in first two series games. Mavericks were -12 in 7:32 that Terry sat on bench; they've still won/covered six of their last seven games. Dallas' FG% has gone up in each game, unusual for playoffs.

Memphis is 6-0 vs spread when playing Spurs this year; they're 11-3 vs spread in last 14 games overall. Spurs are 5-9 in last 14 games; Ginobili returned in Game 2, and Spurs were +16 with him on floor in 93-87 win; no other Sur was better than +7. Spurs had 79-53 edge in foul shots in first two games; Grizzlies shot 39.8% in Game 2, after making 55.2% of shots in first game- their bench was just 8-24 in last game.

Is this where Nuggets miss traded Anthony? They're just 11-32 from arc in first two series games, shooting 39.1% in Game 2 debacle after making 50.6% in Game 1 loss. Oklahoma City won seven of its last eight games, four of last five vs Denver. Nuggets were -13 in 11:29 with Lawson off the floor in Game 2; they were +3 in 12:01 without Felton. Interesting that Denver shot 70 free throws in two games in Oklahoma (OC 56).

                  Saturday, April 23

Road team won last three Tampa Bay-Pittsburgh games; Penguins just won both games in Tampa by 3-2 scores- they've won six of last seven games, but are just 1-18 (29:31) on power play so far in series. Penguins held Tampa Bay to just three shots in 7:54 with man advantage in Game 4 double OT win, killing off a penalty in OT. Unusual that four of ten Pittsburgh goals in series have been scored by their fourth line.

Rangers led 3-0 in third period of Game 4, wound up losing 4-3 in OT on soft goal, now face elimination here, where they scored only one goal in losing Games 1-2 by 2-1ot/2-0 scores. Washington won seven of its last nine games overall; under is 16-7-1 in its last 24 games, 8-4-1 in last 13 Ranger games, 4-1-1 in last five series tilts. New York is 1-18 (31:35) on power play in series, going 1-14 in last two games.

Road team won all four Montreal-Boston games; Bruins won Game 4, rallying from down 3-1 in 2nd period, winning in OT. Boston is 0-12 on power play (19:59) when a man up in series; Canadiens are 2-14 (19:18). Under is 9-5 in last 14 series games, 8-4-1 in last 13 Boston games, 7-3-1 in last ten Montreal tilts- in this series, Boston won the two games that went over, Canadiens won the two that stayed under. .

San Jose is 12-4 in last 16 games overall, with over is 12-3-2 in their last 17 games; since trailing 4-0 in second period of Game 3, Sharks scored 12 goals in less than five periods, winning both games in LA. Road team won last three series games; home team is 0-17 on power play in series. Two of Sharks' three series wins came in OT- they've been outscored in first period 5-1 in series. Over is 12-2-3 in Western Conference games.

                    Saturday's six-pack

Las Vegas odds for the 2011 college football national title
Oklahoma 4-1-- They would have to win a bowl game, right?

Alabama 9-2-- Breaking in new QB; hard to win national title that way.

Oregon 7-1-- Its not that Pac-10 anymore, its the Pac-12.

LSU 8-1-- Jefferson had rough spring game; are there QB issues?

Florida State 11-1-- Another team breaking in new QB.

Ohio State 12-1-- Not like they have any distractions or anything.

                    *****************

Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

                    13) For $13 Friday night, sat behind home plate at Pacific Coast League game; pretty good entertainment value. Nice ballpark. As Bill Murray once said, "The world needs less mental hospitals, more minor league baseball."

                    12) Fantasy tip-- Salt Lake City is an Angels' farm team- they have a 2B named Alexi Amarista who is listed at only 5-8 but is 22 for his first 46 at AAA level, and he has some pop in his bat for a shorter guy.

                    11) Had an avocado smoothie Friday; outstanding. Like a green milkshake. Sadly, I doubt they sell these in New York, but they should.

                    10) There is an area of outdoor shops called Town Square; well worth the visit. Must be fun at Christmastime; they even bring in a snow maker to make it seem more like Christmas. Doubt that works too well.

                    9) I should buy stock in Apple Computers; ever go by one of its stores in the **** and not see it packed? Company must be worth a fortune.

                    8) Driving up the Strip from Cashman Field to my hotel Friday night, lot of things to see; all the big signs so brightly lit, the cops on bicycles trying to catch people with open containers in their car. Just another Friday nite in Las Vegas.

                    7) So Jim Larranaga leaves George Mason for Miami; guy is 60, he just got his salary doubled, so he''s there for five years-- if he wins at Miami, he's a big hero. If he loses, he retires at age 65 with a ton of money in the bank. But make no mistake about it, this move is all about money. Miami isn't as good a team as George Mason right now, and they're in the freakin' ACC.

                    6) LSU has led college baseball in attendance 15 years in a row, averaging over 10,000 fans a game.

                    5) Is Jason Bay the early leader for NL MVP? No, but Mets are 2-0 since he came off the DL, allowing one run in each game.

                    4) You knew the Astros were going to have a rough night when they lost their manager and pitching coach in the 2nd inning, both for arguing balls and strikes. Houston pitchers threw 91 balls, 103 strikes in a 14-7 loss at Milwaukee. Funny thing is, the 2nd base ump tossed both coaches.

                    3) Going into Friday's game, baseball was having its lowest-scoring April since 1992; teams are averaging just 4.31 runs a game- they averaged 4.15 runs a game back in April of 1992.

                    2) Carl Crawford left Tampa Bay for $20M a year in Boston; so far, he is batting .135 with a .190 OB%. His replacement in Tampa Bay is a player named Sam Fuld, who is hitting .366 with a .395 OB%. Go figure.

                    1) If I ran the Red Sox, I'd use a six-man rotation, and use Matsuzaka only on six days' rest; thats what he did in Japan, and thats how he seems to be most effective. They could use Tim Wakefield as the sixth starter. Just an idea, but I thinkt hey'd get the most out of Matsuzaka that way.
