Dodgers try to stay hot in cold-weather Chicago
LOS ANGELES DODGERS (10-10)
at CHICAGO CUBS (9-9)
First pitch: Friday, 2:20 p.m. EDT
Line: Los Angeles -105, Chicago -105
Despite the distraction of their team’s ownership debacle, the Dodgers are playing some pretty good baseball. Matt Kemp’s walk-off homer in the 12th inning Thursday against Atlanta gave L.A. its fourth victory in five games. The Dodgers try to continue their winning ways as they head to Wrigley Field Friday afternoon to start a three-game series with the Cubs.
Los Angeles goes for its third straight win since MLB commissioner Bud Selig seized control of the team due to the financial troubles of owner Frank McCourt. Chad Billingsley (1-1, 4.91 ERA) takes the mound for the Dodgers on the heels of a brilliant outing Sunday versus St. Louis, when he threw eight shutout innings, allowing just two hits, two walks and striking out 11 batters. Billingsley is 3-3 with a 3.77 ERA and 1.49 WHIP in seven career starts against Chicago. He beat the Cubs in both his starts last year, but that was more due to Billingsley’s 17 runs of support than his subpar 4.38 ERA and 1.78 WHIP in those two outings. He has also been terrible on the road this year, posting a 10.12 ERA and 2.25 WHIP in two starts away from home this season. Kemp, who hit his second game-ending HR in five days Thursday, is now batting .411 with 4 HR and 15 RBI in 20 games this season. He and teammate Andre Ethier, who is currently riding an 18-game hitting streak, are tied with Cubs SS Starlin Castro for the NL lead with 30 hits each.
Chicago is coming off a double-header split on Wednesday against San Diego, as Reed Johnson’s 11th-inning HR won Game 1 before a falling 5-4 to the Padres in Game 2. On Friday, the Cubs will send 23-year-old Casey Coleman to the hill. Coleman, who has never faced L.A., is coming off a solid outing Saturday at Colorado. He only allowed one run and four hits in 5.2 innings as the Cubs won that game 8-3. Coleman has only made 10 career starts, but his past five outings have been pretty good (4-0, 2.94 ERA). Castro, the youngest player in the majors at age 21, leads the team with a .375 BA, .910 OPS and 14 runs. Alfonso Soriano has provided the power with a team-best six homers and 14 RBI.
Friday afternoon’s forecast calls for temperatures in the high 30s and low 40s, which should favor the home team Cubs over the warm-weather Dodgers. This five-star FoxSheets manager trend also supports Chicago as the pick to win on Friday.
MIKE QUADE is 18-3 (85.7%, +19.4 Units) against the money line after a loss as the manager of CHICAGO CUBS. The average score was CHICAGO CUBS 4.8, OPPONENT 2.5 - (Rating = 5*).
