Daily Sports Roundup: April 19

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Magic try to bounce back against the Hawks, the Phillies host the Brewers, and the Sharks look for a series lead down in Los Angeles.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has three playoff matchups on tap for Tuesday, with New York at Boston, Portland at Dallas, and Atlanta at Orlando. The Hawks upset the Magic 103-93 in Orlando in Game 1 of their best-of-seven Eastern Conference first-round series on Saturday. Joe Johnson led the way with 25 points for Atlanta in that victory, while Jamal Crawford tossed in 23 points off the bench. Dwight Howard picked up 46 points and 19 rebounds in that losing cause for the Magic. Oddsmakers have Orlando set as an 8.5-point home favorite for Game 2 on Tuesday, with the total for the matchup listed at 182.5.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

On the American League schedule for Tuesday it's the White Sox at Tampa Bay, Minnesota at Baltimore, the Angels at Texas, Cleveland at Kansas City, Boston at Oakland, Detroit at Seattle, and the Yankees at Toronto. New York will send A.J. Burnett (3-0, 4.67 ERA) to the mound in that last contest, while the Blue Jays counter with Kyle Drabek (1-0, 1.93 ERA). Righthander Burnett picked up his third straight victory last time out, allowing four runs on seven hits over 6 1-3 innings of work against the Orioles. Righthander Drabek had to settle for a no-decision in his most recent trip to the mound for the Jays, giving up two runs on six hits in 5 2-3 innings of work against the Mariners.

Over in the National League on Tuesday it's then Arizona at Cincinnati, Pittsburgh at Florida, Houston at the Mets, San Diego at the Cubs, Washington at St. Louis, San Francisco at Colorado, Atlanta at the Dodgers, and Milwaukee at Philadelphia, It'll be the Brewers' Randy Wolf (1-2, 4.32 ERA) taking on the Phillies' Roy Halladay (2-0, 1.23 ERA) in that last matchup. Lefthander Wolf earned the win against the Pirates last time out, blanking them on three hits in 6 2-3 innings of work while fanning 10. Righthander Halladay pitched a complete game for a victory against the Nationals in his most recent start, surrendering two runs on six hits through those nine innings while striking out nine.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are two games on the NHL's playoff schedule for Tuesday, with Vancouver at Chicago and San Jose at Los Angeles. The Sharks and Kings are tied 1-1 in their best-of-seven Western Conference first-round series, with Los Angeles winning Game 2 by a score of 4-0 on Saturday night. Drew Doughty scored a pair of goals and also picked up two assists for the Kings in that victory, while Jonathan Quick made 34 saves for the shutout. Antti Niemi stopped just 19 of 23 shots between the pipes for the Sharks.

Chauncey Billups, New York Knicks: Billups went down with a strained left knee in Sunday’s Game 1 loss to the Celtics and wasn’t able to participate in Monday’s practice. New York’s point guard didn’t sound too optimistic about playing Tuesday. "I think everything is up in the air, day to day," Billups told reporters. "I'm hoping it's (Tuesday). I don't know if that'll happen. I don't even know if that's realistic."

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

13) Chauncey Billups’ injured knee could spell an early end to the Celtic-Knick series; really hard to imagine New York winning more than a game without Billups, who has a strained (not sprained) knee.

12) Knicks are now 14-15 since the Anthony trade. If they go out in this series, you can make a very convincing argument that they should’ve bitten the bullet this season and tried to sign Anthony as a free agent, and if they didn’t get him, then go after Dwight Howard and Chris Paul.

11) Young man named Brendan Steele won Texas Open Sunday; yesterday I said I’d never heard of him, so did some research. He turned 28 two weeks ago, played college golf at UC-Riverside, and he won $515,824 in three years on the Nationwide Tour, winning one event.
Now, in his first year on the big Tour, he is 20th on the money list with $1,266,504. Pretty good start to a career.

10) Phillies are 6-0 in day games this season, 4-5 in night games. Why? Sometimes there is no reason for a stat like that; I can’t think of one.

9) If I ran the Red Sox, I’d bat Youkilis leadoff and Crawford just ahead of Ortiz. If CC gets on base, he steals second, and that screws up the shift on Big Papi, since the third baseman couldn’t leave his position.

9) Angels have Haren and Weaver both at 4-0 in the first 15 games of the season; according to Elias Sports Bureau, last time a team had this happen was the 1945 Tigers. Long time ago.

8) Matt Holliday’s father Tom played in the first-ever College World Series, back when he was a Miami Hurricane. Matt Holliday played for Oklahoma State.

7) Rough start to year for Twins, who have several players with a flu/viral infection; now they’ve replaced closer Joe Nathan with Matt Capps. Story of the year in AL Central so far are the Indians, who are playing really good ball.

6) Bengals.com reports that in their 43 years of existence, Cincinnati has traded up in the draft……..twice. Have to pay those higher draft picks more money, ya know?

5) Harrison Barnes is coming back to North Carolina next season, making UNC a clear preseason #1 for next fall. Only thing that could change that was if all the Kentucky kids came back to school, which is doubtful.

4) There is a lockout looming in the NBA, probably part of why Phil Jackson is walking away from the game; there are going to be kids who’ve left college this spring and signed with an agent who will be sorry if the lockout drags out into the season. There will be kids whose careers are ruined or greatly damaged by this. Its too bad.

3) Am looking forward to seeing the TV show with Jon Gruden and the rookie QB prospects; Gruden is excellent on TV, but doubt we’ll have him for much longer, just until his kids are out of high school, then he'll go back to coaching. Our loss.

2) Bad news for online poker players last week; thanks to ESPN.com, here are numbers of players in Main Event of World Series of Poker the last five years: ‘06) 8,776 ‘07) 6,258 ‘08) 6,844 ’09) 6,494 ’10) 7,319.
I’m thinking the government is wrong on this- they need to lighten up and let people have fun, but politics being what it is, good luck with that. You’d probably have a better chance of drawing to an inside straight.

1) The world has gone crazy; maybe it’s the big money all these guys make, and the demand for immediate success that comes with it, but how in the name of God can anyone clamor for Mike D’Antoni’s ouster? You can’t win in the NBA without players and he once he got a star to build around (Stoudemire), the Knicks started winning, but the naysayers have been out in full force since the Anthony trade.
Maybe being a nice guy is such a curse in New York that you need a bastard to coach here, just to soothe the story-hungry media. Other than that, I can’t come up with one good reason why Knick fans shouldn’t be glad as hell D’Antoni is their coach.

Billups' strained knee is huge concern for NY squad that led in last 0:15 Sunday, but couldn't finish; Shawne Williams was only Knicks sub with a plus rating in Game 1, so if Billups can't go, that really hurts. Boston is 5-0 against the Knicks this season (2-3 vs spread), winning in this gym by 4-10-2 points; three of the five games went over total. Celtics are just 7-7 in their last 14 games, 3-6-1 in last ten games as a favorite.

Howard/Nelson took 41 of Magic's 75 shots in Game 1; other Orlando players were dismal 8-34 from floor. Atlanta shot 51.4% in upset win at Orlando; they turned ball over only nine times (+9), but were -10 on boards. What bettors need to know: Knicks at Celtics

New York Knicks at Boston Celtics (-7, 193)

THE STORY: The Celtics look to take a 2-0 lead over the Knicks in their best-of-7 playoff series Tuesday in Boston as New York is expected to be without Chauncey Billups. The Knicks starting point guard injured his left knee in the final minute of Game 1 on Sunday and did not practice Monday. The Celtics won the opener 87-85 when Ray Allen drained the winning 3-point basket with 11.6 seconds remaining. Boston trailed for most of the second quarter and all of the third before rallying from a 12-point second-half deficit. Carmelo Anthony missed a 3-pointer with two seconds left for the Knicks, who are 0-5 against the Celtics this season.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TNT, Comcast Sports New England (Boston), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE CELTICS: Boston didn’t have Shaquille O’Neal (calf), but the Celtics had Jermaine O’Neal healthy and making a major impact. Jermaine O’Neal made all six of his field-goal attempts and had 12 points and four blocked shots. Allen had 24 points as Boston’s Big Three combined for 57 points. Paul Pierce scored 18 points, and Kevin Garnett had 15 points and 13 rebounds. Boston got the pace it prefers against the high-scoring Knicks and held New York’s offense to 34 points on 32.6 percent shooting in the second half. The Celtics received only eight points from the bench and will need more production from Glen Davis, who had two points on 1-of-8 shooting.

ABOUT THE KNICKS: Toney Douglas was being prepared Monday to start in place of Billups, who was in significant pain after Sunday's game. Anthony’s first playoff game as a Knick will be memorable for all the wrong reasons. He sat out nearly the entire first quarter after drawing two fouls in the first 1:28, made only 1-of-11 second-half shots and was called for an offensive foul with 21 seconds left prior to Allen’s decisive basket. He also missed New York’s last shot to complete a subpar 15-point performance. Amar’e Stoudemire was on his game with 28 points and 11 rebounds, though.

WHO'S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Allen made 9-of-15 shots, including three 3-pointers in Game 1. Anthony finished 5-of-18 from the field.

KEY STATISTIC: Boston held New York to 85 points, 21.5 below the Knicks’ season average.

New York Knicks at Boston Celtics (-6.5, 193)

Jesus Shuttlesworth showed that he got game.

Ray Allen, of “He Got Game” fame, hit nine of 15 shots, scored a team-high 24 points, and buried his third three-pointer for the game-winner as Boston overcame New York 87-85 in the series opener on Sunday.

Despite not having Shaquille O’Neal (calf), the Celtics featured a lethal inside-outside combination. Complementing Allen’s long-range shooting, Kevin Garnett went for 15 points and 13 boards as the home team out-rebounded the Knicks 44 to 34. Point guard Rajon Rondo chipped in and crashed the glass for nine of his own.

Shaq is still listed as questionable and is not expected to return for Game 2 on Tuesday, but the visitors could be without Chauncey Billups. The veteran guard left Sunday’s showdown late in the fourth quarter due to a strained left knee. He is also listed as questionable.

“I'm in a lot of pain right now,” Billups told the New York Daily News afterward. “That's to be expected. If I can get out there and help any I'll be out there. We'll just have to see.”

Portland Trail Blazers at Dallas Mavericks (-3.5, 183)

Dallas turned back the clock for a come-from-behind 89-81 home win in Game 1 on Saturday. Dirk Nowitzki scored 18 of his game-high 28 points in a furious fourth quarter and—more surprisingly—Jason Kidd drained six threes during a 24-point performance.

“I wasn't on the map,” Kidd told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “I think Dirk said it best—they didn't have me penciled in for 24 points. I just felt I needed to be aggressive coming out. In this series I felt that I needed to look at the basket a little bit more.”

The Mavericks have now won five in a row dating back to the regular season and have covered the spread in all five of those contests.

Portland, meanwhile, got 27 points from LaMarcus Aldridge and 18 rebounds from Marcus Camby, but it continues to get nothing from Brandon Roy. After returning from double knee surgery in January, Roy averaged 8.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in 21 regular-season games. He played 26 minutes in Game 1 and contributed a mere two points on 1-for-7 shooting.
