    Daily Sports Roundup: April 16

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: LeBron James and company begin their quest for an NBA title with a game against the Sixers, and the Coyotes look for a victory in Detroit.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA playoffs get underway on Saturday with four games on the schedule: Indiana at Chicago, Atlanta at Orlando, Portland at Dallas, and Philadelphia at Miami. The Heat (58-24 SU, 39-42-1 ATS) won four games in a row to end the regular season and lock up the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, while the Sixers (41-41 SU, 46-35-1 ATS) ride a two-game losing streak into Saturday's contest. Miami won all three matchups with Philadelphia this season, taking the most recent meeting 111-99 at home as an 8-point favorite on March 25. Oddsmakers have the Heat set as big 10.5-point home favorites for the series opener on Saturday, with the total for the day's contest listed at 190 points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Saturday has Baltimore at Cleveland, Toronto at Boston, Seattle at Kansas City, Minnesota at Tampa Bay, the Angels at the White Sox, Texas at the Yankees, and Detroit at Oakland. Justin Verlander (1-1, 3.13 ERA) gets the ball for the Tigers in that last matchup; righthander Verlander was a hard-luck loser against the Rangers in his last trip to the mound, allowing two runs on six hits over nine innings of work. The Athletics will counter with Dallas Braden (0-1, 4.15 ERA); lefthander Braden is coming off a no-decision versus Chicago (one run in six innings) last time out.

Over in the National League on Saturday it's Milwaukee at Washington, Pittsburgh at Cincinnati, the Mets at Atlanta, San Diego at Houston, the Cubs at Colorado, San Francisco at Arizona, St. Louis at the Dodgers, and Florida at Philadelphia. Anibal Sanchez (0-1, 6.97 ERA) heads to the hill for the Marlins on Saturday; righthander Sanchez was knocked around by the Astros last time out, allowing six runs on 13 hits in just 4 2-3 innings of work. Cole Hamels (1-1, 5.59 ERA) gets the call for the Phillies; lefthander Hamels blanked the Braves on four hits over seven innings in his last outing.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL playoffs continue on Saturday with Buffalo at Philadelphia, Montreal at Boston, Los Angeles at San Jose, and Phoenix at Detroit. The Coyotes and Red Wings played Game 1 of their best-of-seven Western Conference series back on Wednesday night, with Detroit pulling out a 4-2 home win in that contest. Pavel Datsyuk, Johan Franzen, Brian Rafalski, and Jiri Hudler had the goals for the Red Wings in that victory, while Jimmy Howard stopped 26 of 28 Phoenix shots. Kyle Turris and Radim Vrbata responded for the Coyotes in the losing cause, and Ilya Bryzgalov made 32 saves. Oddsmakers have Detroit pegged as the -170 favorite for Saturday, with the total at 5.5.

Saturday's betting tips: Mets' horrid bullpen presents opportunity

      Weather to watch

Texas Rangers at New York Yankees -- It will be an overcast, possibly wet day in the Bronx. At first pitch, 1:05 p.m. ET, there's a 30 percent chance of rain and the likelihood increases throughout the afternoon. The high temperature will be 51 degrees.

      Who’s hot

MLB: The Reds are 6-1 in Edinson Volquez's last seven home starts, and 37-17 in his last 54 starts on grass.

NHL: The Red Wings are 38-14 in their last 52 playoff games as a favorite, and 7-2 in their last nine overall playing on two days' rest.

NHL: The Sharks have won 28 of their last 38 games.

NBA: The Pacers are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 games as an underdog of 11 or more points.

NBA: The Trail Blazers are 5-0 ATS in their last five games against teams with a winning percentage of at least .600.

      Who’s not

MLB: The Phillies are 3-9 in Cole Hamels' last 12 starts against the Marlins.

NHL: The Flyers are 1-7 in their last eight home games.

NHL: The Over is 2-8-1 in the Bruins' last 11 games against teams with a winning record.

NBA: The Heat is 4-10 ATS in its last 14 games as a home favorite of 5 to 10.5 points.

NBA: The Hawks are 3-12-1 ATS in their last 16 playoff games as an underdog.

      Key stat

97.4 -- That's the Bulls' defensive efficiency rating, tops in the NBA just ahead of the Celtics' 97.8. Defensive efficiency is the number of points a team allows per 100 possessions. Chicago's opponent Saturday, Indiana, ranks 12th at 103.4.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Mavericks guard Rodrique Beaubois, who scored 18 points in his team's last meeting with Portland on April 3, is questionable for Saturday's playoff opener against the Trail Blazers. Beaubois (8.4 ppg, 2.3 apg) left Wednesday's regular-season finale with a sprained left foot. Even if Beaubois is available, coach Rick Carlisle plans to start DeShawn Stevenson at two-guard. Stevenson started 53 games before Beaubois returned from a fractured foot in February. Oddsmakers have Dallas as a 5-point favorite. Portland is 6-2 ATS in the teams' last eight meetings.

      Game of the day

      Philadelphia 76ers at Miami Heat (-10.5, 190)

      Notable quotable

"No. 1, they got that dude. To be a great team, you have to have that dude and that dude is Derrick Rose. People can say what they want to, he has been the best basketball player in the world this year." -- TNT analyst Charles Barkley on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on radio station ESPN 1000.

      Notes and tips

It wouldn't be a bad idea to bet against the Mets in the second halves of games these days. New York has lost five straight despite owning a two-run lead in each game. The Mets’ bullpen sports an unsightly 6.48 ERA during the skid.

The Detroit Red WIngs could get center Henrik Zetterberg back for Game 2 of their series with the Phoenix Coyotes at 1 p.m. ET. Detroit won the opener 4-2 without Zetterberg, who sustained a lower body injury when he was checked by Carolina's Bryan Allen on April 6. Zetterberg has been able to skate with his gloves and stick the past couple days and is listed as questionable. The 30-year-old Swede won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP in 2008. This season, he notched 24 goals and 56 assists.

Now that's more like it. After a brutal 6-for-40 start, St. Louis slugger Albert Pujols located the batting stroke that's produced at least a .300 average, 30 homers and 100 RBIs in each of his first 10 seasons. Pujols went 6-for-13 over a three-game stretch heading into Friday night's game against the Dodgers, with a homer, a double, three RBIs and six runs scored.

        Saturday's six-pack

-- Red Sox are 2-10 and Carl Crawford is batting .137; you can get him out of the leadoff spot anytime now, ya think?

-- Don't look now Met fans, but Jeff Francoeur is hitting .327 and bats cleanup for the Royals, who are an improved team.

-- Jon Garland had pitched over 2,000 major league innings without any balks until Friday night, and Bob Davidson was nowhere in sight.

-- Colorado Rockies have won seven games in row and are 11-2.

-- There have been two bases loaded triples in the major leagues already this season, and both were hit by catchers. Go figure.

-- Steve Spurrier got another $800,000 raise from South Carolina this week; sounds like he's earned every penny in his dealings with his QB Stephen Garcia, who is currently suspended for the fifth time at USC. Its not good when your QB is your biggest off-field distraction.

        ************************

Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

        13) Rough couple nights for the Twins, who blew 2-0 lead in 9th inning Thursday, then 3-2 lead in extra innings as Johnny Damon hit winning two-run tater for the Rays; Minnesota then lost to the Rays 5-2 Friday, as Tampa Bay has bounced back with four straight wins.

Minnesota also put Joe Mauer on the DL, which considering he is in the first year of a contract worth $180M+, is even more troubling.

        12) Don’t be surprised if the Twins deal Francisco Liriano to the Bronx for one of the Bombers’ catching prospects, which would then move Mauer or Morneau to DH.

        11) Knicks are in playoffs for first time in seven years, yet any comments I hear about Mike D’Antoni are largely negative. Why is this? Is no one ever happy? You want Isiah Thomas back? Don Chaney?

        10) Its not that easy being famous, I guess. This from the New York Post, on former Verizon pitch man Paul Marcarelli.

"His fame had gotten so broad -- and so weird -- that a few months ago, at his grandmother's funeral, a friend of the family whispered to another person, "Can you hear me now?" just as her body was being lowered into her grave."

        Now thats weird.......

        9) Red Sox finally made Adrian Gonzalez’ contract extension official; seven years, $154M. Now all they need is some starting pitching, and a leadoff hitter and a catcher.

        8) If you get a chance, check out ESPN’s special on Condredge Holloway, who QB’d the Tennessee Vols in the early 70’s. Kenny Chesney narrates it, and it is very well done. My friend Joe J introduced me to Holloway back in the fall of ’04; I have a Tennessee media guide (its text-book sized) signed by him. Very nice man who had no reason to be nice to me. Anyway, check out that show. Its good TV.

        7) Pro golfer Kevin Na actually shot a 16 on the par-4 9th hole at the Texas Open Thursday. I suck at golf, but I never got a 16 on one hole. Na hit four tee shots, two shots lefty, it was a complete debacle. Guess he didn’t want to play the weekend.

        6) Maybe the best part of UNLV signing Dave Rice is head coach is that they also hired assistant coach Justin Hutson, who was the recruiting assistant at MWC rival San Diego State. Aztecs had a lot of good players the last few years, didn't they?

        5) Rory McIlroy shot 69-64 in first two rounds of Malaysian Open this week, bouncing back from last Sunday’s meltdown at Augusta, and even after the airline was late in delivering his golf clubs to Malaysia. Good lesson there; nothing seems to bother the kid, at least not for too long.

        4) Pitcher Carlos Zambrano of the Cubs has 22 career home runs; that’s a lot for a pitcher.

        3) When Phillies got consecutive complete games from Halladay and Lee earlier this week, it was first time they had consecutive complete games since Paul Byrd/Curt Schilling in 1999.

        2) Guy I know at work recently lost 120 pounds; if he had shaved his beard, I wouldn’t have known who he is, thats how different he looks. He had the gastric bypass surgery and says he feels great, so much credit to him, and hope he has continued good health.

        1) If the baseball playoffs started Saturday morning, these would be the playoff teams:
        AL: Bronx-Cleveland-Kansas City-Texas
        NL: Philadelphia-Cincinnati-Colorado-Florida

The Magic lost three of four to Atlanta during the regular season, but you can probably throw those out the window. Orlando seems to be a different team when it reaches the playoffs. Stan Van Gundy’s squad won the East two years ago and did not lose a single game en route to last season’s conference finals before falling to the Celtics in six.

Among Orlando’s 2010 playoff victims was none other than Atlanta. In a record-setting series, the Magic swept the Hawks by a combined 101 points -- the biggest margin in NBA history.

The Hawks should at least get a game this time around, but it may not come on Saturday. Josh Smith missed three games recently with a knee injury and played sparingly in the final two regular-season contests. Jason Collins sat out the last four games due to a sprained ankle. Both should play in Game 1, but they could be limited.

Collins is a little-used reserve, but he is valuable when Atlanta goes up against Dwight Howard and company. Van Gundy told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution after an 85-82 Hawks’ win on March 30 that Collins played “the best defense I’ve seen all year on Dwight.”

Orlando, meanwhile, won five of its last six regular-season games at the Amway Center.

                  Pick: Magic

Portland Trail Blazers at Dallas Mavericks (-5, 186)

The Mavericks have flamed out in the first round in three of the last four playoffs. But they are not concerned about that as they try to end the streak of underachieving.

“I’m not into analyzing the past,” coach Rick Carlisle told ESPNDallas.com. “This is a new situation. It’s an exciting time. We’re going to go into this thing guns blazing.”

Dallas is also going into the postseason with a nice four-game winning streak (4-0 ATS). The team won three of those contests by double digits, including a 25-point rout of Phoenix last Sunday and a 32-point destruction of New Orleans on Wednesday.

Carlisle announced that DeShawn Stevenson will replace Roddy Beaubois in the starting lineup at shooting guard for the playoffs. That should energize the Mavs, as Beaubois looked out of his league as a starter after returning from a foot injury in February.

Portland and Dallas split four regular-season meetings, the home team winning every time.

                  Pick: Mavericks
