    Daily Sports Roundup: April 9

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The league-leading Spurs host the Jazz, the Cardinals battle with the Giants, and the Sprint Cup Series hits the track down in Texas.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA's schedule for Saturday has Atlanta at Washington, the Clippers at Houston, Cleveland at Milwaukee, Minnesota at Denver, and Utah at San Antonio. The Spurs won their 60th game of the season last time out, improving to 60-19 SU and 44-33-2 ATS with a 124-92 blasting of Sacramento in San Antonio on Wednesday night. San Antonio is also 2-0 against Utah so far this season, winning their most recent matchup 112-105 as a 3.5-point road favorite in an OVER result back on January 26. Manu Ginobili led the way for the Spurs with 26 points in that win, while Tony Parker had 23 points, and Tim Duncan had just 13 points. Since-departed Deron Williams scored 39 points for the Jazz.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

On the American League schedule for Saturday it's the Yankees at Boston, Tampa Bay at the White Sox, Kansas City at Detroit, Oakland at Minnesota, Toronto at the Angels, Cleveland at Seattle, and Texas at Baltimore. The Rangers will give the ball to Matt Harrison (1-0, 1.29 ERA) in that last matchup; lefthander Harrison beat the Red Sox in his first start of the season, allowing just one run on five hits over seven innings of work. The Orioles will counter with Jake Arrieta (1-0, 1.50 ERA) on Saturday; righthander Arrieta beat the Tigers in his season debut, giving up one run on six hits over six innings.

The National League schedule for Saturday then has Philadelphia at Atlanta, Florida at Houston, Colorado at Pittsburgh, Washington at the Mets, the Cubs at Milwaukee, Cincinnati at Arizona, the Dodgers at San Diego, and St. Louis at San Francisco. Jaime Garcia (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will take the hill for the Cardinals on Saturday; lefthander Garcia blanked the Padres on four hits in a complete-game victory in his first start of the year. Matt Cain (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will get the call for the Giants; righthander Cain is also coming off a scoreless performance, shutting out the Dodgers over six innings in his first outing.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Eleven games make up the NHL's Saturday schedule this week, with New Jersey at the Rangers, Ottawa at Boston, Washington at Florida, Montreal at Toronto, the Islanders at Philadelphia, Tampa Bay at Carolina, Buffalo at Columbus, Nashville at St. Louis, Phoenix at San Jose, Anaheim at Los Angeles, and Vancouver at Calgary. The 41-29-11 Flames were eliminated from playoff contention with a 6-1 loss to Edmonton on Wednesday night, and they're just 1-4 against Vancouver so far this season. The Canucks, who have clinched first place overall in the NHL standings, won the last meetings between the two teams 4-3 on the road in an OVER result back on March 12.

    Roaring around the track . . .

Finally, the Sprint Cup Series takes the track at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday night for the Samsung Mobile 500. Carl Edwards is the oddsmakers' +450 favorite to pick up the win in Texas on Saturday, with Jimmie Johnson next at +600 odds, and Kyle Busch following him at +700 odds. Denny Hamlin, who won both races at Texas last season, and Kevin Harvick, who won Sprint Cup events in each of the last two weeks, round out the oddsmakers' Top 5 with +800 odds to visit Victory Lane on Saturday night.

Saturday's betting tips: Serious over indications at Fenway

      Weather watch

Get out your umbrellas if you’re headed out to Augusta National, where Tiger Woods has surged into contention going into the weekend. Rain is expected overnight in Augusta, Ga., with afternoon storms popping up toward the end of the third round.

      6 Yankees-Red Sox Betting Tips

The OVER is 37-15-1 in the last 53 meetings between New York and Boston at Fenway Park.
A light breeze, 8 mph from the SSW, is forecast to be blowing out to left-center field.
The Red Sox have scored seven or more runs in their last six home games against the Yankees.
Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira absolutely hammer Clay Buchholtz, today’s starter for the Red Sox. Cano is 7 or 15, and Teixeira is 4 for 9 with two home runs against Buchholtz.
Yankee starter Ivan Nova went 0-2 with a 6.43 ERA in two late-season appearances against the Red Sox last year.
Umpire Chris Guccione is expected to be behind home plate for today’s games. The OVER is 20-7-3 in Guccione’s last 30 games behind home plate vs. New York.
      Injury Updates

NBA: Minnesota Timberwolves forwards Kevin Love and Darko Milicic traveled with the team to Denver, but neither seems likely to play against the Nuggets tonight. In fact, Love, who’s got groin issues, might be done for the season, according to the Minnesota Star-Tribune.
Milicic’s got a bad ankle, and along with Love, did not practice Friday. Both are listed as doubtful.
Denver opened as a 13.5-point favorite over the depleted Timberwolves.

NHL: Henrik Zetterberg, the Red Wings’ leading scorer with 80 points, is listed as day-to-day when the playoffs start next week. The center suffered a lower-body injury in Wednesday’s loss to Carolina. Detroit is expected to have defenseman Niklas Kronwall back for the playoffs. But backup goaltender Chris Osgood has been ruled out. Joey MacDonald will backup Jimmy Howard in the playoffs.

MLB: Marlins All-Star shortstop Hanley Ramirez left Friday's game in Houston after being injured while trying to turn a double play. Ramirez had to be helped off the field. The Marlins opened as small favorites in Saturday's game with the Astros.

        Saturday's six-pack

-- Carl Crawford batted leadoff Friday for first time since 2007; CC's career on-base percentage is just .337, terrible for a guy with his speed.

-- LIU coach Jim Ferry turned down the Manhattan job Friday; thats a huge slap in the face to the Jaspers.

-- Eldrick Woods is now +16 for his career on 1st hole at Augusta.

-- As of Friday morning, Bronx Bombers have sold 3.2M tickets for the 2011 season. Eight miles away, the Mets had sold 1.4M.

-- Last year, newspapers were banned from the Mets' clubhouse; not so this season. Why would you ban newspapers? What country is this?

-- Utah Jazz is going to finish under .500 for second time since 1983.

        **********************

Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me but..........

        13) So Manny Ramirez retires rather than get socked with a suspension of 100 games for another failed test for PHDs; let the record show that he singled off of Koji Uehara for his last major league hit April 2, his only hit in 17 ABs for Tampa Bay. The first night he was off the team, Rays got their first win, scoring five in the 9th in Chicago to win 9-7. Karma?

By the way, an oddity about Manny's last hit; it came in a game where the Oriole starting pitcher, Chris Tillman, came out of the game after six innings despite not having allowed a hit.

        12) You look at the Red Sox/Rays starting season 0-6, and you realize that none of the previous 58 teams that started a season 0-6 won as many as 90 games that season. Not saying it can't be done, but.......

        11) 1991 Minnesota Twins started season 2-9 but went on to win 95 games, and then the World Series, so there is precedent that the ship can be righted. Just not a lot of precedent.

        10) Lefty reliever Dennis Reyes was the first casualty in Beantown, getting his release, but at least he pocketed $900,000 for this week in the Red Sox uniform, and he never got the chance to be booed at home. What a country.

        9) There are 28 different minor league baseball players with the last name “Rosario”; there aren't any Rosarios in the major leagues.

        8) According to ESPN.com, Felix Hernandez is just 9th pitcher since 1900 to have as many as 172 major league starts before his 25th birthday. He seems indestructable.Historically, pitchers with so many innings pitched early on tend to flame out sooner than most pitchers, but King Felix could be that rare exception.

        7) In New York City public high school baseball, pitchers have a limit of 105 pitches per game; once they hit 105, they can finish that batter, but then they can’t pitch for the next four days.

        6) If Miami Hurricanes don’t reach out to try and hire Kansas State’s Frank Martin, a former Miami-area high school coach, why would anyone else want the job? If they decline to go after Martin, it signals that they’re not that interested in winning, and in the ACC, that’s bad for a coach’s earning potential.

        5) How could NC State pay a search firm $90,000 to find a basketball coach, then wind up hiring a guy who would’ve walked from ESPN’s headquarters to Raleigh to coach in the ACC? All they had to do was call Mark Gottfried, ask him if he wanted the job, and they save $90,000. Whos getting paid off here?

        4) Over half the players on USC’s spring roster (47 of 86) have never played in a college football game. That not good.

        3) According to the TV show CSI, $10M in $100 bills would weigh 220 pounds.

        2) Strange Friday in the big leagues; there were two rain delays in San Diego (game is still going on as I post this), Huston Street pitched three innings for Colorado, Rays scored nine runs after scoring a total of 8 in their first six games, and the Red Sox finally won a game.

In 38 years in San Diego, Padres have had 16 home games rained out.

Longest outing of Street's career is 3.1 IP; this was his second-longest.

        1) Our thoughts and prayers go out to St John’s basketball coach Steve Lavin, who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, at age 46. From everything you hear, Lavin is a great guy. We enjoyed his seven years of work on ESPN. Get well soon.

Pick 'n roll: Saturday's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Atlanta Hawks at Washington Wizards

It’s sort of been a tale of two seasons for the Atlanta Hawks; one against bad teams, and the other against good teams.

Atlanta is a stellar 30-9 against sub-.500 teams in 2010-11, but it is a wretched 14-25 against opponents with winning records. That 14-25 mark is the worst among the seven Eastern Conference teams that have already clinched postseason berths.

“Teams that are not in the playoffs we will come out and play together and beat them,” mega-million-dollar guard Joe Johnson recently told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “But the great teams, the top teams in the league, we come out and it seems like we don’t fight back.”

That shouldn’t be a problem heading into Friday’s clash against the lowly Wizards, who are 21-57 (30-48 ATS) as of Friday afternoon.

The three previous games between these two teams embody Atlanta’s good-against-bad, bad-against-good season. All three contests were won by the Hawks, who covered the spread on two of three occasions—including in a 99-92 road victory on Feb. 5.

            Pick: Hawks

Utah Jazz at San Antonio Spurs

The road to the NBA Finals goes through San Antonio.

That was assured on Wednesday, when the Spurs drubbed Sacramento 124-92 while the second-place Lakers fell to Golden State. Those two results combined to give San Antonio its fifth Western Conference No. 1 seed under head coach Gregg Popovich.

“We knew it wasn’t the end of the world to finish second,” Manu Ginobili told the San Antonio Express-News, referring to when his team won the NBA title as a No. 2 seed in 2005. “At the same time, after the kind of season we had, we wanted it.”

The Spurs now have it, but that doesn’t mean they are going to sleepwalk through the remainder of the regular season. A battle for the league’s best overall record will matter for home-court advantage purposes if both San Antonio and Chicago advance to the finals. The Spurs (60-19) are just one-game better in the loss column than the Bulls (58-20).

Of course, this team probably could sleepwalk through Saturday’s contest and still rout Utah. The Jazz have lost nine of their last 10 games (3-6-1 ATS).

            Pick: Spurs

Hockey Night In Canada: NHL betting preview
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs (-115, 5.5)

Tradition reigns supreme in Hockey Night in Canada's final regular season installment, as two of the league’s most bitter rivals, one headed to the postseason, one not, collide in the Air Canada Centre.

                Luck runs out on Leafs

With a bunch of youngsters and a patchwork lineup, Toronto should be commended for a serious late challenge at the East’s final playoff berth. The Maple Leafs, boosted by the emergence of goalie James Reimer, won six out of seven games through April 2.

But, with a berth officially out of their grasp now, Toronto has lost a bit of steam. The Maple Leafs’ 4-2 loss to New Jersey Wednesday was their second in less than 24 hours, and it wasn’t pretty. Reimer, in fact, was pulled after two periods for Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

Surely, the Maple Leafs will be fired up to play their finale at home versus the Habs. But, with a clear talent difference on the other side, one has to wonder how long into the game that charge will last.

                Successful Subban

We’ve been hearing about him for so long and his memorable postseason run is still fresh in many people’s minds, but it’s hard to believe that defenseman P.K. Subban is still a rookie.

He’s controversial, yes, but he’s also quite comprehensive. This week, he was even clutch. His 14th goal of the season gave the Canadiens a 2-1 win Tuesday over the Blackhawks and officially secured a postseason bid for up-and-down Montreal.

Subban will finish the regular season as a minus player, surprisingly. But like last year, the 6-foot, 202 pounder again has a chance to continue to establish his brand in the playoffs.

                Not-So Saturday Night Specials

When you’re a Toronto Maple Leaf, you get used to playing on Saturday nights. Forever the staple of Hockey Night in Canada, it’s just a given that you’ll see those classic jerseys weekly on primetime.

But in this calendar year, despite the Maple Leafs’ late run for the postseason, Saturdays were not super. In fact, Toronto takes a 4-8 Saturday mark into this finale in 2011.

                History

Toronto will shoot for a season series victory over Montreal here, as the Maple Leafs take a 3-2 mark into the finale. On Feb. 24, Reimer out-dueled Carey Price, as Toronto escaped with a 5-4 win. The best bet, though, may be the under, which is an impressive 4-1 in this series.

                Vancouver Canucks at Calgary Flames

Rivalry weekend has a late-night chapter as well, as the Flames, who will be playing for pride, try to slow the Vancouver train as it barrels toward the postseason as the league’s No. 1 seed.

                Finally, the flameout

It was indeed a roller-coaster season for the Flames, who had a rocky start, but rallied to put themselves into playoff contention.

Backed by another superb season from Jarome Iginla, who buried his 42nd goal on Wednesday, the Flames almost completed the comeback. But despite racking up a 6-1 win over Edmonton on that same night, they were officially eliminated after the Blackhawks and Ducks posted victories.

Calgary put a charge in its fan base down the stretch. But when the Flames and their supporters stop to look back on this season, it’ll be hard to think of it as anything other than a disappointment.

                Avoiding boredom

Give credit to Vancouver for hanging in when it was easy to lay back, watch the rest of the West beat each other up, and just wait for the postseason.

But the league’s best team was like the Energizer Bunny for most of the winter. They just kept going and going and going.

A rare and unexplained back-to-back washout versus Edmonton aside, the Canucks owned the month of March. They went 12-3 and proved they can win by more ways than just the blowout, with a 2-1 victory over Columbus, 4-3 over Phoenix, 2-1 over Detroit, and the list goes on.

There are bound to be close playoff games on the horizon. And, when they come, bettors can look back on March for a snapshot as to how this team reacted when faced with them.

                No Longer Cryin’ Ryan

After a first half for the ages, Vancouver forward Ryan Kesler all but disappeared after the fantasy draft at the NHL All-Star Game. His career season slowed in the second half and people began to wonder if he was a fluke.

But if Thursday is any indication, Kesler is back and ready for the postseason. He scored three goals and reached the elusive 40 club in an easy 5-0 Vancouver victory over the Wild.

                History

Not surprisingly, the Canucks have owned the season series, going 4-1. But the better bet may be the over, despite the presence of goalies Roberto Luongo and Miikka Kiprusoff. The over is 4-1 in this series.

Ice picks: Saturday's top NHL bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Lightning at Carolina Panthers

As of Friday afternoon, Tampa Bay still had a chance to overtake Pittsburgh for the No. 4 seed and home-ice advantage in the first round. Carolina is aiming to sneak into the playoffs at the expense of the New York Rangers.

Both teams are making a serious late-season push for their respective targets. The Lightning won five consecutive games before falling 4-2 at Buffalo on Tuesday. The Panthers have won four of their last five and seven of their last nine.

“Everyone in the locker room realizes how important each game is for us,” Carolina rookie center Jeff Skinner, who became the eighth 18-year-old in NHL history to score 30 goals in a season during Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Detroit, told the Burlington Times News. “It’s exciting to come to the rink and have something to play for.”

It’s also exciting when these two Southeast Division rivals go head-to-head. They have gone over the total in all five of this season’s contests and in each of their last six dating back to the spring of 2010. Their last four encounters have been decided by no more than two goals.

With both teams still playing for something (barring Friday’s results), expect more furious action on the ice.

                  Pick: Over

                  Vancouver Canucks at Calgary Flames

As one team coasts into the playoffs, another is left to rue its missed opportunities.

Vancouver has locked up the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference, a whopping 12 points clear of second-place San Jose. Calgary, on the other hand, was eliminated from postseason contention when Chicago beat St. Louis on Wednesday night.

“It’s tough,” captain Jarome Iginla told the Fort Frances Times. “I really thought we were going to find a way to sneak in.”

The Flames had done their part of late, winning three in a row punctuated by a 6-1 destruction of Edmonton on Wednesday. But they started their charge too late and it remains to be seen how they will respond with nothing to play for on Saturday.

Of course, little to play for has not seemed to affect the Canucks. They have been cruising to the top seed for weeks now, yet they have still won six of their last eight games. Vancouver is also 4-1 against Calgary this season, its only loss coming in a shootout.

                  Pick: Canucks

Hot lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Phillies (-113) at Atlanta Braves, 1:10 p.m.

Roy Oswalt vs. Brandon Beachy – that’s all you need to know.

Beachy, a rookie righthander, pitched well in his debut, limiting the Brewers’ powerful lineup to just one run on four hits on Monday. But consistency, as always, is a big question mark for any rookie pitcher. And now the Phillies will have a little tape on him and will be looking to expose any flaws in Beachy’s game.

Getting Oswalt, who has been solid against the Braves over his career, at less than -120 is a steal.

                      Pick: Phillies

Colorado Rockies (-103) at Pittsburgh Pirates, 7:05 p.m.

The Rockies have started the season as one of several undervalued teams. They hand the ball to former No. 2-overall pick Greg Reynolds to take on the Pirates’ always hittable Charlie Morton on Saturday.

Reynolds, a 6-7, 225-pound righthander, will be making his MLB debut, but this kid has all the tools to be an instant hit in the Bigs. Plus, betting against the Pirates is never a bad decision, especially against Morton.

Morton pitched well hi his season-debut, picking up the win after allowing only one run on three hits in six innings against St. Louis on Monday. He did walk five batters, which has been an issue throughout his career. Can he follow it up with a second straight strong outing? It won't be easy.

The seven current Rockies who have faced Morton are hitting a combined .467 against him.

                      Pick: Rockies
