    Daily Sports Roundup: April 6

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rays play host to the Angels, the Giants try to beat the Padres in San Diego, and the Bucks travel to Miami for a game versus the Heat.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up a dozen games on Wednesday, with Orlando at Charlotte, Cleveland at Toronto, Washington at Indiana, New York at Philadelphia, New Jersey at Detroit, the Clippers at Oklahoma City, Phoenix at Minnesota, Houston at New Orleans, Sacramento at San Antonio, Denver at Dallas, the Lakers at Golden State, and Milwaukee at Miami. The Heat improved to 54-23 SU and 36-40-1 ATS with a 108-94 win in New Jersey in their last game on Sunday, and they're 3-0 against Milwaukee so far this season. The Heat and Bucks last met on January 7 in Milwaukee, with Miami winning 101-95 but failing to cover the spread as a 7-point road favorite. That game produced an OVER result.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Wednesday has Seattle at Texas, the White Sox at Kansas City, Minnesota at the Yankees, Boston at Cleveland, Detroit at Baltimore, Oakland at Toronto, and the Angels at Tampa Bay. Dan Haren will get the ball for Los Angeles in that last matchup; righthander Haren won his season debut against the Royals last week, giving up just one earned run on six hits over his seven innings of work. The Rays will counter with Jeremy Hellickson, who will be making his first start of the season. Righthander Hellickson went 4-0 with a 3.47 ERA for Tampa Bay last year.

Over in the National League on Wednesday it's then Pittsburgh at St. Louis, Arizona at the Cubs, the Dodgers at Colorado, the Mets at Philadelphia, Houston at Cincinnati, Washington at Florida, Atlanta at Milwaukee, and San Francisco at San Diego. The Giants' Tim Lincecum will take on the Padres' Tim Stauffer in that last matchup. Righthander Lincecum was a hard-luck loser in his first outing of the year, taking a loss against the Dodgers despite giving up just one unearned run in seven innings of work. Righthander Stauffer had to settle for a no-decision in his first start of the season last week, allowing two runs on nine hits over his six innings of work against the Cardinals.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, there are eight games on the NHL's Wednesday slate, with the Islanders at Boston, Detroit at Carolina, Toronto at New Jersey, Florida at Washington, St. Louis at Chicago, Edmonton at Calgary, San Jose at Anaheim, and Phoenix at Los Angeles. The 42-25-12 Coyotes are coming off a 4-3 home shootout loss to Colorado last Friday, but they're 3-2 against division-rival Los Angeles so far this season. However, the Kings won the last meeting between the two teams 1-0 at home as a -170 favorite on March 3. Jarrett Stoll scored the lone goal in that contest to give Los Angeles the win, while Jonathan Bernier stopped 25 Phoenix shots. Ilya Bryzgalov made 17 saves for Phoenix.

Wednesday's betting tips: Tiger dissed, D-Wade's status

      Weather to watch

Boston Red Sox at Cleveland Indians – 40 percent chance of rain with winds blowing from third to first base at a 16 mph clip.

      Who’s hot

NBA: Indiana has covered in seven of its last 10 matchups with the Washington Wizards.

NBA: The under has cashed in on nine of the last 12 meetings between Houston and New Orleans.

NBA: Denver has covered in seven of its last eight trips to Dallas.

NHL: Washington has won seven of its last eight home games.

      Who’s not

NBA: New Jersey is just 9-21 against the spread in its last 30 road games.

NBA: The Los Angeles Clippers have covered only twice in their last 10 games.

NHL: Carolina is 3-14-1 in its last 18 matchups with Detroit.

NHL: New York Islanders have won only three of their last 13 meetings with the Boston Bruins.

      Key stat

0.69 – Through the first four games of the season, the Baltimore Orioles pitching starting staff has been spectacular. The club’s first four starters (Jake Arrieta, Jeremy Guthrie, Chris Tillman, Zach Britton) each threw at least six runs and allowed one run or fewer, which has only been done five times before in MLB history. The four pitchers allowed just two total runs combined for an ERA of 0.69.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Dwyane Wade, Miami Heat – Wade is considered questionable for Wednesday’s game against Milwaukee with a thigh bruise that he described as a “9.7 out of 10” on the pain scale. He missed Tuesday’s practice and says he will give it a go during Wednesday’s shootaround and take it from there. Wade is putting up 25.7 points, 4.5 assists, and 6.5 rebounds per game.

      Game of the day

Denver Nuggets at Dallas Mavericks (N/A)

      Notable quotable

"I don't think [Tiger Woods will] finish in the top 5. The shots he was hitting at Doral, they were very inconsistent. You can't afford to hit shots like that on this golf course and get away with it. I don't think you want to rely on your short game that much around this place." – Ian Poulter on what he expects from Tiger Woods this weekend at the Masters.

      Notes and tips

The Los Angeles Angels are removing Fernando Rodney from the closer’s role, at least temporarily. The Angels blew a lead in either the eighth or ninth inning of their first four losses of the season in Kansas City. Rookie Jordan Walden will take over as closer and he should provide some excitement if nothing else. The 23-year-old right-hander can crack the century mark with his heater and didn’t allow a run during spring training or in his first three appearances this season.

It sounds as though Fernando Torres will get a chance to finally score his first goal for Chelsea in Wednesday’s opening leg of their Champions League quarterfinal against Manchester United. There had been some speculation that manager Carlo Ancelotti might look elsewhere for his starting forward considering Torres hasn’t scored in eight games since joining Chelsea, but it looks like he’ll give the Spanish International another shot. "We have seen Torres play well for the team, he did not score, he is not happy for this reason, but in my opinion he played well for the team,” Ancelotti told reporters Tuesday. “He has an opportunity tomorrow (Wednesday) to play the same."

The Toronto Maple Leafs put up a good fight, but their quest for a playoff berth ended Tuesday night when they lost to the Washington Capitals and the Buffalo Sabres downed the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Leafs have been a terrible puckline bet all season, losing more than 26 units for the club's supporters and won't have much to play for when they face off against the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday.

        Wednesday's six-pack

-- How about Jim Nantz’ week? Final Four, then the Masters. Not bad.

-- Still can’t believe Butler went 3-31 inside the arc Monday. 9.7%.

-- The first gas station in this country was in 1905, in St Louis.

-- Monday’s crowd of 26,292 at Wrigley Field was the smallest in nine years in the Friendly Confines.

-- They’re making a Three Stooges movie; hope they do it justice.

-- Nelson Cruz is just the third player ever to homer in his team’s first four games (Mays/McGwire).

        ***********************

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

        13) NC State did pretty well hiring a basketball coach, considering no one seemed to want the job; Mark Gottfried has led Alabama/Murray State to the NCAAs- he is the Wolfpack’s new head coach. Quite a challenge, battling Duke and North Carolina on Tobacco Road.

        12) Missouri’s fans aren’t happy about hiring Frank Haith from Miami. He seems like a good guy, but his 43-69 record in ACC play doesn’t have boosters reaching for their wallets yet. Mizzou has lot more resources and a way better fanbase than Miami, so he should do fine.

        11) Kansas State’s Frank Martin is the Hurricanes’ #1 choice to replace Haith. Martin, who is of Cuban descent, would be a serious force in recruiting talent-rich south Florida.

        10) Pat Knight got hired at Lamar, despite his 16-42 record in Big 12 play at Texas Tech. Considering this is where Billy Tubbs still works, not sure this is the best possible fit.

        9) Mel Kiper Jr points out that Missouri’s Blaine Gabbert completed only 44% of his 3rd down passes LY, while Stanford’s Andrew Luck completed 71%, which is part of why Kiper isn’t that sold on Gabbert as the #1 QB in this draft.

        8) Rangers’ Ian Kinsler/Nelson Cruz are first teammates ever to homer in each of their team’s first three games. Thought that might have happened at least once before, but it hasn’t.

        7) ESPN.com also points out that Angels’ CF Peter Bourjos makes $414,000 in 2011, while LF Vernon Wells makes $162,808 every game.

        6) Since last August 3, Baltimore’s record is 5 games better than anyone else in the AL East- that covers a sample of over 60 games, so it might not be a fluke. Buck Showalter has given Oriole fans hope.

        5) Kevin Millar made a splash on his new MLB Network talk show by ripping the job Lou Piniella did in Chicago last year. Interesting to see if Sweet Lou responds- he works in the Giants’ front office now.

        4) Don’t understand why college kids hire agents when they put in for the NBA Draft- they’re reducing their options greatly. If a kid were to get hurt or play poorly during workouts, he could retreat to college and either recover or improve, or both. Once he hires an agent, no more retreating.

        3) I’d like to see the four First Four games in Dayton be played between the last eight teams to get at-large bids. All automatic qualifiers should get to play on Thursday-Friday, even if they’re #16 seeds.

        2) Kansas City Royals are 4-1, and their starting pitchers haven't won a game yet. Red Sox are 0-4, already four games out of first place.

        1) You know times are tough when I see the mascot of the local minor league hockey team waiting for the bus in front of the **** after work Monday. In full costume.

Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday's best basketball bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Bucks at Miami Heat (N/A)

The Heat may not have Dwyane Wade for this Eastern Conference matchup. And they aren’t worried.

Wade is averaging 25.7 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game, but is battling a sore right quad and could be sidelined for the meeting with Milwaukee. He aggravated the injury when he collided with Travis Outlaw in a win over New Jersey.

"We're battling for [No.] 2 right now, you want to be out there," Wade said. "You also want to make sure going down the stretch with the playoffs coming and big games this weekend that you make the right decision."

The Heat, however, have been bolstered recently by the play of their big men. One of the team’s weak points, the front court is beginning to develop some chemistry. The team has won three straight against the Timberwolves, Wizards and Nets and covered a double-digit spread each time out.

In the win over the Nets, the Heat scored 60 points in the paint and held a 50-30 edge in rebounding. Forwards Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Erick Dampier combined for 21 points and 18 rebounds.

“We’re certainly putting a lot of emphasis on free-throw attempts, layups and dunks,” Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said. “All those numbers have been going up the last few weeks and it’s really been a residual from their collective work and concentration in that area.”

That work will continue with or without D-Wade.

                  Pick: Heat

Orlando Magic at Charlotte Bobcats (N/A)

The Bobcats are likely to face one of the scariest things in the league: a rested Dwight Howard.

The dominant center told coach Stan Van Gundy the team desperately needs to better space out its minutes and give the starters more rest entering the playoffs. The team already is dealing with injuries to Gilbert Arenas, Chris Duhon and J.J. Reddick. As a result, the club is a mere 3-14 ATS in its past 17 games and has seen the under hit in six of its past 10.

But it’s not like the Bobcats are a picture of health. The team is fighting for a playoff spot and is a frisky 4-3-1 ATS over its past eight games, however multiple players will miss time this week. Tyrus Thomas, Eduardo Najera, Shaun Livingston and Stephen Jackson all are questionable for the game.

As a result to all the injuries, the team has been forced to slow down the pace and play better defense. The Bobcats have seen the under hit in two straight and six of their past 10 overall.

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Jose Sharks at Anaheim Ducks (-125, 5.5)

The goal judges should get their thumbs loose before this one faces off.

San Jose has been on a tear the past 10 games. The Sharks have won four straight and eight of their past 10 overall thanks to a streaking offense. The team is averaging 4.6 goals per game over its past 10 games and not surprisingly, the team has seen the over go 8-1-1 during that time.

“We shot the puck a lot, and we were able to find loose ones for second opportunities,” San Jose coach Todd McLellan said after his team’s most recent game, a 6-1 win over the Kings. “We knew they were going to be a very good defensive team coming in, and they didn’t give up many, so without taking the first one you never get a chance at the second one and its part of the game plan.”

Meantime, the Ducks have been nearly as hot. Anaheim is 7-3 over its past 10 games and has seen the over hit the past four times out. Over those 10 games, the over has hit seven times as the team is averaging 3.4 goals per game over that span.

Anaheim also is supposed to be without stud goalie Jonas Hiller, who is suffering from vertigo and is doubtful to take the ice. In five meetings between the teams this season, the over has hit three times.

                            Pick: Over

Phoenix Coyotes at Los Angeles Kings (-135, 5)

Phoenix hasn’t played a road game in nearly three weeks and has dropped two of its past three games. Over those three games, the team has conceded nine goals and suffered a 4-3 shootout loss to the lowly Avalanche.

"We weren't good enough in the first period but we got better," Phoenix forward Shane Doan said. "We should have won that one and we should have won that one in regulation."

Meantime, the Kings are trying to get their act together following a 6-1 beatdown from the San Jose Sharks. The team is a respectable 6-4 over its past 10 games, but is a strong 4-0 in its past four home games. In those games on their own ice, the Kings are averaging 3.1 goals per game.

Los Angeles is dealing with injuries to leading scorers Anze Kopitar (25 goals, 48 assists) and Justin Williams (22 goals, 35 assists) have not been devastating for the Kings as the team has recently shuffled lines and has remained flexible with varied combinations during the season.

"You want to make sure you shut one-goal games down," Kings coach Terry Murray said following a 3-1 win over Dallas. "To be able to do it here today, against a team that's pushing everything it's got to get one back, it's good confidence for the team."

                            Pick: Kings

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
