GAME NOTES: The Louisiana Superdome is the site of Tuesday's New Orleans Bowl between the Tigers of Memphis and the Mean Green of North Texas. The Tigers bring an 8-4 regular season mark into the game, which is their best regular-season finish since the 1973 campaign. Memphis had reeled off five straight wins during the year, before losing to USF, 21-16 in its season- finale. Still, the squad finished in the upper half of Conference USA with a mark of 5-3. The Tigers' 2003 season was highlighted by a 44-34 home victory over SEC power Ole Miss in their second game of the year. This game will be just the third all-time bowl appearance and the first since 1971, for Memphis, which has won the previous two. As for North Texas, it has become all too familiar with bowl games, especially the New Orleans Bowl. This game will be the Mean Green's third trip to the New Orleans Bowl, where they have posted an even 1-1 record, including a 24-19 victory over Cincinnati last season. The squad earned a spot in the bowl game by winning the Sun Belt Conference title for the third straight season. The team also completed its second-straight perfect Sun Belt record (7-0) and has won a nation-leading 18 straight conference games, dating back two seasons ago. North Texas also comes into the contest red hot, as it has won eight consecutive games, finishing 9-3 overall. The Mean Green and Tigers have met 19 times previously, with Memphis holding a 15-4 advantage. However, North Texas has won three of the last four meetings, including a 29-10 victory at Memphis in 1980.
This will be a classic matchup of two run-oriented teams with strong defenses. Both teams enter the contest with strong finishes to the year, but now must deal with the extended layoff. Each school will try to establish the running game, and whichever one is more successful will surely win. Despite Williams' questionable status for Memphis, the Tigers may have success with their passing game. Give the edge to Memphis which could get solid play from Wimprine, en route to the victory.

GAME NOTES: Two of the nation's top offensive teams will battle in the fifth Annual GMAC Bowl this Thursday when the Ben Roethlisberger' led Miami-Ohio RedHawks battle the Louisville Cardinals from Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile. The RedHawks come into this bowl game ranked 14th overall in the nation and with good reason, having won 12 games for the first time in school history and the Mid-American Conference title for the first time since 1986. They are currently one of the hottest teams in the country, having recorded all 12 of their wins in a row, including an impressive 49-27 victory over the previously then 20th-ranked Bowling Green Falcons in the MAC Championship game. Miami- Ohio has not lost since dropping its season-opener to Iowa and became the first team to win all of its MAC games since Marshall accomplished the same feat in 1999. This will be the school's first appearance in a bowl since losing to San Jose State by a score of 37-7 in the 1986 California Bowl. In terms of Louisville, it is making its school-record sixth straight bowl appearance and its second straight showing in the GMAC Bowl. The Cardinals are hoping that this season's version will go much better than last year's when it was pounded by Marshall and Byron Leftwich, 37-15, in Mobile. Although Louisville has not run off 12 straight victories like the RedHawks, it does enter this contest on a little run, having won its last two games of the season. The Cardinals' last victory of the regular season was a wild one, as they blew a 21-point lead but were able to rally for a 43-40 win against an underrated Cincinnati squad. The victory assured the Cardinals another bowl appearance and gave their first-year head coach Bobby Petrino the most wins in school history by a rookie coach. Although Louisville has been able to advance to a bowl game in each of its past five seasons prior to this one, it recorded only one win in those contests (2001 Liberty Bowl). While the Cardinals have not had much luck in their recent bowl appearances, they have never faced the RedHawks on the gridiron, as this is the first-ever meeting between these two squads.
While these two offenses are somewhat close in terms of statistics and overall success this season, Roethlisberger sets the RedHawks apart from anyone else's offense in the nation. If you had to build a quarterback from scratch, Roethlisberger would be the protypical blue print, possessing both the physical and mental tools to not only exceed at this level but most likely the next level. He will pick apart this struggling Louisville defense and send the Cardinals back home with their fifth bowl defeat in the last six years.
