    Daily Sports Roundup: April 1

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Phillies get their season underway against the Astros, the Jazz play host to the Lakers, and the Flyers look for a victory in New Jersey.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up 13 games on Friday night, with Cleveland at Washington, New Jersey at Philadelphia, Charlotte at Orlando, Milwaukee at Indiana, Chicago at Detroit, Miami at Minnesota, Memphis at New Orleans, Boston at Atlanta, San Antonio at Houston, the Clippers at Phoenix, Oklahoma City at Portland, Denver at Sacramento, and the Lakers at Utah. The Jazz ride a six-game losing streak into their Friday matchup with Los Angeles, falling to 36-39 SU and 31-42-2 ATS on the season with a 100-95 loss at home to Washington in their last game on Monday night. The Lakers and Jazz last met on January 25, with Los Angeles rolling to an easy 120-91 win as an 8-point home favorite.

As well, the CBI college hoops tournament wraps up on Friday, with Oregon hosting Creighton in the third game of the best-of-three championship series. The Ducks forced the third game with a 71-58 home win in Game 2 of the series on Wednesday night; the Bluejays had managed to grab an 84-76 home win in the series opener on Monday night.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The National League has five games on tap for Friday, with Pittsburgh at the Cubs, Arizona at Colorado, the Mets at Florida, San Francisco at the Dodgers, and Houston at Philadelphia. The Astros will send Brett Myers to the hill in that last contest, while the Phillies counter with Roy Halladay. Righthander Myers went 14-8 with a 3.14 ERA for Houston last season; he pitched for Philadelphia from 2002-2009. Righthander Halladay dazzled during his first NL campaign in 2010, compiling a 21-10 record with a 2.44 ERA.

Over in the American League on Friday it's then the White Sox at Cleveland, Minnesota at Toronto, Baltimore at Tampa Bay, the Angels at Kansas City, Seattle at Oakland, and Boston at Texas. The Red Sox will go with Jon Lester in their opener on Friday, and the Rangers counter with C.J. Wilson. Lefthander Lester went 19-9 for the BoSox last year with a 3.25 ERA; lefthander Wilson went 15-8 with a 3.34 ERA for the Rangers last year.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are four games on the NHL's schedule for Friday, with Chicago at Columbus, Calgary at St. Louis, Colorado at Phoenix, and Philadelphia at New Jersey. The Flyers and Devils have already met five times this season, with Philadelphia picking up the victory in three of those contests. However, New Jersey won the last meeting between the teams 3-1 on the road on January 22, with Patrik Elias scoring twice in that victory for the Devils. James van Riemsdyk had the lone goal for the Flyers in that defeat.

Friday's betting tips: Weather could hamper Halladay start

      Weather to watch

The latest weather reports list a 30 percent chance of showers for tomorrow’s Phillies-Astros game in Philadelphia with 24 mph winds blowing in from right-center field. It should also be chilly with a low of 31 degrees.

      Who’s hot

NBA: Milwaukee is 6-2-1 in its last nine games against Indiana.

NBA: Cleveland has covered in six of its last eight road games.

NHL: The under has cashed in on each of Chicago’s last six games.

NHL: Phoenix is 8-2-0 in its last 10.

      Who’s not

NBA: Orlando has covered just once over the last eight games.

NBA: Detroit is 1-8-1 against the spread in its last 10.

NBA: The Clippers have covered only once over the seven.

      Key stat

5 – Philadelphia Phillies starter Roy Halladay has picked up at least 16 wins in five consecutive seasons and is coming off a 21-win year last season, throwing a perfect game in the regular season and adding a no-hitting in the playoffs. So, it’s no surprise to see Philadelphia set as a -260 favorite at home to Houston on Friday.
      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

      Injury to watch

Stephen Jackson, Charlotte Bobcats: Jackson has been trying to play through his hamstring injury but it looks as though he’ll have to sit out again Friday after leafing Wednesday’s game at the half. The Bobcats are still chasing the Pacers for the last playoff spot in the East and this could injury could end up keeping them on the outside looking in.

      Game of the day

Boston Red Sox at Texas Rangers (+110, 8.5)

      Notable quotable

"C.J. Wilson, he's so tough on everybody, but he dominates left-handers most of the time. We're trying to get a little balance against him." – Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona told reporters about shuffling his lineup to face Texas’ tough lefty. Mike Cameron will start instead of J.D. Drew, Kevin Youkilis will be in the cleanup spot with Adrian Gonzalez behind him and Jacoby Ellsbury will lead off. Asked about the change Drew told reporters “it gives us an opportunity to win the game."

      Notes and tips

Washington Wizards rookie guard John Wall will miss Friday’s game against Cleveland with a one-game suspension stemming from an altercation he got into with the Miami Heat on Wednesday. Wall is averaging better than 16 points and eight assists per game. Meanwhile, Miami’s Juwan Howard and Zydrunas Ilgauskas were fined for their parts in the same incident but will be available for Miami’s game at Minnesota. The Heat are pegged as 10.5-point favorites.

The defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks have managed to earn 8.82 units for the club’s supporters this season. However, one disturbing trend for futures bettors is that the Blackhawks have allowed 83 goals in the third period this season, which is fifth from the bottom in the NHL. Chicago currently sits in the eighth and final playoff spot in the West heading into Friday’s contest against Columbus.

        Friday's six-pack

-- Wyoming hired Larry Shyatt as its new hoop coach; Shyatt was the #1 assistant to Billy Donovan at Florida-- he previously was coach for one year at Wyoming, in 1998, before moving on to Clemson.

-- Ramon Hernandez hit a 3-run walkoff tater, as the Reds scored four runs in the 9th to stun Milwaukee, 7-6.

-- Brewers' first two hitters this season hit HRs, first time since 1969 that a team did that ('69 Reds-- Rose/Tolan).

-- A's became just fifth big league team whose flagship radio station is an FM station. Apparently, FM listening is on the rise in America.

-- Washington Huskies' star Isaiah Thomas will be in the NBA Draft, so that hurts Lorenzo Romar's team going into next season.

-- Congrats to Wichita State, which won the NIT with a 66-57 win over Alabama Thursday night. Next question for Shockers is whether coach Gregg Marshall will get hired away by a bigger school this spring.

        *************************

Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

        13) Jason Heyward is Mr March; he’s homered in his first at-bat of the season two years in a row, his first two big league seasons. Only other player in MLB history to do that? Kaz Matsui (Mets, '04-'05).

        12) Greed knows no bounds; YES Network's contract with DirecTV ends on midnight April 1, so could be no more Bronx Bombers for customers of DirecTV. Cable TV/satellite industry is out of control with so many bloodsucking parasites.

        11) As if winter in New York hasn’t been hideous enough, its supposed to snow here tonight, and thats not an April Fools' joke.

        10) Houston Astros are starting same three OFs as last Opening Day, but the other six starting players are all different than 2010.

        9) Albert Pujols grounded into three double plays Thursday, first player in MLB history to do that on Opening Day.

        8) Butler’s success is a great story, but you wonder if other teams in the Horizon League (Loyola, Chi, in this case) get impatient looking at the Bulldogs and expect too much for their program. Loyola fired 7-year head coach Jim Whitesell this week; his record was couple games over .500. Its too bad if Butler’s success cost Whitesell his job.

        7) LA Clippers sold out their last ten home games; they’re still not a good teamn, but Blake Griffin gives them hope, gives their fans someone to be proud of, gives the front office someone to build around.

        6) Did you know Werner Ladders is the official ladder of March Madness (as in, cutting down nets)?

        5) Miami Dolphin backup QB Chad Pennington tore an ACL playing hoops; because of the lockout, there is no health insurance for NFL players, so hopefully, Pennington had health insurance on his own, or this is going to be one expensive basketball game he was playing in.

        4) The first week of baseball season, all the warm weather/dome teams should be at home. Doesn’t that make sense?

        3) I’m guessing people will or have tried, but Jerry Sloan would be an excellent get for a studio analyst for the NBA playoffs; he is very honest, so he might make for some good TV.

        2) Lot of debate on Internet this week about which is the bbetter job for a basketball coach, NC State or Missouri? As someone who grew up a big Wolfpack fan, listening to State games on WBT in Charlotte in the David Thompson era (my favorite player was Tom Burleson, NC State’s 7-4 center), there is no doubt that until Coach K retires, Missouri is the better job. There's a bigger ceiling, and less expectations.

        1) Herb Sendek made the NCAAs five years in a row at State, but the constant negativity sent him running off to Arizona State; Duke and UNC are the ACC kingpins and it will take an amazing building job (or very excellent cheating) to get NC State up to that level before Coach K or Roy Williams retire. The best NC State can hope for now is #3 in the ACC.

Mizzou has no such tradition, but they have great facilities and they’re close to lot of high school hoop hotbeds. For my money, as somebody who grew up as a Wolfpack fan, I’d advise a coaching friend to pursue the Missouri job before NC State. At least until Krzyzewski retires.

Pick 'n' roll: Friday's best basketball bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Portland Trail Blazers (-2.5, 190.5)

The Oklahoma City Thunder have picked a perfect time to peak in the regular season. They’re coming off their best single month in franchise history after going 14-2 straight up in March while covering 10 times during that stretch.

They have a good shot at starting April on the right foot too. Oklahoma City has won its first three meetings with Portland this season, including a 99-90 victory over the Blazers as a 4.5-point favorite last weekend. Russell Westbrook put up 28 points in that win and is averaging more than 30 points against the Blazers this season.

"After my first two seasons, we went from (23) wins to 50-win seasons, that is a big turnaround for us and something that can't be overlooked," Kevin Durant told reporters.

The Blazers are under the gun down the stretch, but it’s hard to pass up the Thunder at this number.

                  Pick: Thunder

Miami Heat at Minnesota Timberwolves (10.5, 208)

Whether it’s still a lack of chemistry or just a lack of focus, It seems like every now and then the Miami Heat need a serious wakeup call.

The Cleveland Cavaliers were the latest team to snap the Heat back to reality in LeBron James’ second visit to his former team earlier this week. Following that embarrassing loss, Miami rebounded to hammer Washington 123-107 on Wednesday, covering as a 12.5-point favorite.

“I take a loss hard, no matter who it's against," James told reporters before facing Washington. "I don't like to lose - especially when you know we could have done things better."

The Heat will have Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Juwan Howard in the lineup after they were involved in a bit of a dustup with John Wall and Miami still should be able to cover the number against the Timberwolves.

                  Pick: Heat
