    Daily Sports Roundup: March 30

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Trail Blazers search for a win in New Orleans, the CBI and CIT look to determine their champs, and the Rangers have a game in Buffalo.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up 13 games on a busy night around the league on Wednesday, with Orlando at Atlanta, Milwaukee at Toronto, Miami at Washington, Cleveland at Charlotte, Houston at Philadelphia, Detroit at Indiana, New Jersey at New York, Chicago at Minnesota, Golden State at Memphis, Sacramento at Denver, Oklahoma City at Phoenix, Dallas at the Clippers, and Portland at New Orleans. The Hornets fell to 42-32 SU and 35-36-3 ATS on the season with a 102-84 road loss to the Lakers in their last game on Sunday. New Orleans is 2-1 against Portland on the season, but the Blazers pulled out a 103-96 home victory as a 5.5-point favorite when they last met February 16.

As well, there are a pair of college hoops games on tap for Wednesday, with Oregon hosting Creighton in the second game of the CBI championship series, and Santa Clara visiting Iona in the title game of the CollegeInsider.com tournament. Creighton beat Oregon 84-76 at home in the first game of the CBI championship series on Monday, and they can clinch the tourney title with a victory on Wednesday. Over in the CIT event the oddsmakers have Iona as the 9.5-point favorite, with the total for that game at 152.2.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are five games on the NHL's schedule for Wednesday, with the Montreal at Carolina, the Islanders at New Jersey, St. Louis at Detroit, Anaheim at Calgary, and the Rangers at Buffalo. The Rangers improved to 41-30-5 on the season with a 1-0 shutout win in Boston in their last game on Saturday afternoon. Henrik Lundqvist stopped all 26 Boston shots in that victory. New York is 2-1 against Buffalo so far this season, but they fell 3-2 at home when the teams last met on March 1. Tyler Myers, Brad Boyes, and Jochen Hecht scored for Buffalo in that win, while Ryan Miller made 29 saves. Erik Christensen and Artem Anisimov provided the markers for the Rangers.

Wednesday's betting tips: Creighton can clinch CBI

      Who’s hot

NCAAB: The over is 7-1 in Oregon’s last eight home games and 4-0 in Creighton’s last four overall.

NBA: The Nuggets are 7-1 ATS in their last eight home games and the under is 5-1 in their last six overall.

NBA: The Bulls are 6-1 ATS in their last seven road games and the over is 5-1 in their last six overall.

NHL: The Ducks are 4-1 in their last five road games and 6-1 in their last seven overall.

NHL: The Rangers are 6-1 in their last seven road games and 6-1 in their last seven overall.

      Who’s not

NBA: The Magic are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games and 1-6 ATS in their last seven overall.

NBA: The Knicks are 1-8 ATS in their last nine against the Eastern Conference and 1-6 ATS in their last seven overall.

NHL: The Devils are 0-5 in their last five against the Eastern Conference and 1-5 in their last six overall.

NHL: The Canadiens are 0-4 in their last four against the Eastern Conference and 1-4 in their last five overall.

      Key stat

23.5 – Points per game being averaged by Creighton forward Doug McDermott during the College Basketball Invitational. He is averaging 15.2 for the season. McDermott went off for 31 points and 10 rebounds in a second-round win over Davidson and he scored 21 points in Monday’s Game 1 win over Oregon. The Bluejays can clinch the CBI title at Oregon on Wednesday.

      Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

Double-double machine Kevin Love missed a trio of games for the Timberwolves last week with a groin problem. Love practiced on Sunday and was questionable for Minnesota’s 85-82 home loss to Boston, but he did not take the court. The power forward is also questionable for Wednesday’s contest against Chicago and indications are that Love will play. Keep in mind, though, that the Wolves are out of playoff contention and have no reason to take a risk if Love is not 100 percent.

      Biggest games on the slate

Orlando Magic at Atlanta Hawks – Preview of like first-round series in the Eastern Conference playoffs

New York Rangers at Buffalo Sabres (-120, 5) – Battling for the final playoff spots in the Eastern Conference

      Notable quotable

"It's two different teams playing each other. I don't think there is anything in that game (that relates to this one. We ran, got ahead; everything fell into place for us. That game means nothing." – University of Connecticut head coach Jim Calhoun on his team’s 84-67 blowout of Kentucky in the Maui Invitational final on November 24. UConn, which faces Kentucky again in Saturday’s Final 4, led 50-29 at halftime.

      Tips and notes

The Pistons are well out of playoff contention at 26-47, but that does not mean that they don't have more and more problems creeping up every day. Head coach John Kuester has not exactly enjoyed a flawless rapport with players this season, and now it’s Charlie Villanueva who is in the doghouse. Villanueva was benched for the fourth quarter of last Wednesday’s loss to Miami and he did not see the floor in last Friday’s setback at Cleveland. Villanueva played 12 minutes in Saturday’s win over Indiana and he made the most of them, scoring 13 points on 5-of-5 shooting. In other Detroit news, Chris Wilcox (knee) and Ben Gorgon (migraine) are probable while Tracy McGrady (back) is questionable and Ben Wallace (knee) is doubtful for Wednesday’s contest at Indiana.

New Jersey Devils’ forward Zach Parise is close to returning after being sidelined since October 30 due to knee surgery. Parise practiced without pain on Tuesday and is listed as questionable for Wednesday’s home date with the New York Islanders. "He's getting better and better," said New Jersey head coach Jacques Lemaire. "He looks fine and fit. He's been away for so long and he said he feels good after being back a week. Getting back to play will certainly give him confidence. It's always tough after a long injury."

Novak Djokovic is 21-0 this season heading into the Sony Ericsson Open quarterfinals on Wednesday, with titles at the Australian Open, in Dubai, and at the BNP Paribas Open. So far in Miami he has dropped a mere eight games in three matches; one to Denis Istomin, two to James Blake, and five to fellow Serb Viktor Troicki. Up next for the world No. 2 is Kevin Anderson, who won their only previous head-to-head meeting three years ago at this very same tournament. Nothing suggests Djokovic will let anything like that happen this time.

        Wednesday's six-pack

-- Wichita State hammered Washington State 75-44 in NIT semifinals; dismal effort by Coogs playing their first game out of Pacific timezone.
Shockers will play Alabama in NIT finals; Crimson Tide won a good game Tuesday night, edging Colorado 62-61.

-- Memphis coach Josh Pastner got a 5-year extension worth $1.7M a year to remain coach of the Tigers.

-- Real life rears its ugly head: Shaka Smart's grandfather passed away early Tuesday morning at age 90. Smart will still go to Houston with his team as planned this week.

-- Saw UCLA play a lot this season; at no point did Tyler Honeycutt impress me so much that I thought he'd bolt for the NBA Draft, but he did just that this week. There might not even be an NBA next season.

-- Cavaliers beat Miami 102-90 at home behind Baron Davis, giving Cav fans a rare chance to gloat this season. Cleveland's TV announcer just used the word "pulverize" to describe the action. Uh, OK......

-- Extra benefit of signing up for baseball package on digital cable- you get the NHL package activated too. Good for early playoff rounds.

        *******************

Wednesday's List of 13: What I'm looking for this baseball season

        13) How will the Red Sox handle being the AL favorite? Adding Crawford/Gonzalez is huge; if their catching holds up, they’ll be tough to beat in the AL East.

        12) That said, which starting pitcher(s) will Bronx Bombers add as they try to keep pace with Boston and at least make playoffs as a Wild Card? As it stands now, their starting pitching is ridiculously thin for a team with their payroll.

        11) Giants won World Series LY for first time since moving to California in the late 50’s; how will they defend their crown? Will young 1B Brendan Belt stick with the big club out of spring training?

        10) Will Pirates have their 19th straight losing season? New manager Clint Hurdle is a good one, but players win games, and Pittsburgh has gotten rid of far too many good ones over the years.

        9) Five non-roster invitees made Seattle’s roster, which means five guys had to be cut off the 40-man roster. That doesn’t happen every day.

        8) Bobby Cox-Lou Piniella-Joe Torre all retired as managers after last season. That’s a lot of knowledge leaving the game all at once.

        7) Who will the Mets trade Francisco Rodridguez to? KRod’s $17 million contract option for 2012 kicks in if he finishes 55 games in 2011. There is no way on God’s green earth he will do that for the Mets. He has to get traded to a closer-hungry contender.

        6) How do you own a baseball team in New York City, have a brand-new $850M stadium, own part of a very profitable TV station and still lose $50M in one year? Even Clippers' owner Donald T. Stirling thinks the Wilpons are nitwits.

        5) Aaron Harang gave up 43 home runs at home the last three years, while pitching for the Reds; according to one of those hit-tracker software companies, 13 of them wouldn’t have been HRs at Petco Park, Harang’s new home field. We look for him to have big season in his hometown.

        4) Braves made 32 errors in their first 31 exhibition games; will the defense shore up when the games start for real?

        3) 2,954 people applied for the job as the Cubs’ PA announcer. They all must have swingshift jobs.

        2) This is the year the Tampa Bay Rays feel the full sting of being a small market club; they’ve lost several key pieces from the team that made the playoffs two of the last three years, including the best player in franchise history (Carl Crawford). Its hard to imagine them being over .500 this season.

        1) Why is spring training so long? Why hasn’t the Players’ Union ever complained about this? Starting pitchers rarely go a full nine innings anymore, do they really need 6-7 weeks to get ready for the season? Spring training does generate a huge amount of free publicity, and its fun to see games played in March, but is it necessary? I’m not saying it isn’t, I’m just asking.

Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Orlando Magic at Atlanta Hawks

The Magic humiliated the Hawks in a record-setting playoff sweep last season, but Atlanta has won two straight in 2011. A December 6 decision in Orlando went 80-74 in the Hawks' favor and they prevailed 91-81 at home on December 20.

Of course, that does not really tell the entire story. Neither team was at full strength for the four previous encounters, including each of the last two. Atlanta's Joe Johnson and Orlando's Jameer Nelson were out on December 6 and the flu-plagued Magic had just made their blockbuster deal when the most recent meeting took place.

The same could go for Wednesday's clash. Johnson missed Sunday's blowout win at Cleveland and is listed as questionable. However, the high-priced shooting guard practiced on Tuesday and is expected to return.

“He was actually pretty good,” head coach Larry Drew told the Atlanta Journal Constitution after the workout. “I asked him how the thumb was and he said it was much better than a couple days ago. That’s good to hear. I thought he shot the ball pretty good today.”

Josh Smith is not listed on the injury report, but he is dealing with a sore right knee. The Magic, though, are listing Nelson (knee), Quentin Richardson (back), and Chris Duhon (thumb) as questionable to go along with J.J. Redick (abdominal) being out indefinitely.

                Pick: Magic

Dallas Mavericks at Los Angeles Clippers (5, 199)

Nothing on paper points toward a good night for the Clippers on Wednesday.

They have lost eight straight to Dallas, including twice this season, and they are 0-5 ATS in their last five home games plus 1-6 ATS in their last seven overall. The Mavericks, on the other hand, have won four in a row. They have held five consecutive opponents to fewer than 100 points and two during the streak to fewer than 80.

"We're back to where we started where we were playing pretty good defense," Jason Kidd told the Dallas Morning News after Sunday's 91-83 win at Phoenix. "Then we went through a lapse where we were just going to outscore people. You go through those during a season. But we understand what it takes to win a championship. The past champions, they all play good defense. Sometimes it’s not going to be pretty, but if you hold teams to 83, you’re going to win a lot of games."

During their eight-game streak against the lesser Los Angeles team, the Mavs are 5-0 ATS in the last five (2-0 ATS this season).

                Pick: Mavericks
