    Daily Sports Roundup: March 29

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NIT stages its semifinal matchups at Madison Square Garden, while the Heat visit Cleveland, and the Coyotes play host to Dallas.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up four games on Tuesday, with Houston at New Jersey, Golden State at Oklahoma City, Phoenix at Sacramento, and Miami at Cleveland. The Heat have taken care of LeBron James' former team in all three meetings so far this season, most recently winning 117-90 as a 17.5-point home favorite on January 31. Dwyane Wade had 34 points for the Heat in that win, while James was good for 24 points and eight assists. Chris Bosh had 10 points on the day. Antawn Jamison, who is now out for the season with a hand injury, led the Cavaliers with 21 points in the losing cause. Miami is 2-1 ATS against Cleveland this season, and all three games ended up as OVER results.

The National Invitational Tournament then plays its semifinal games in New York on Tuesday, with No. 4 Wichita State vs. No. 2 Washington State and No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 1 Colorado. Oddsmakers have Wichita State set as a 2.5-point favorite in that first matchup, with the total for the contest at 141.5 points. Alabama has then been listed as a 2-point favorite for Tuesday's second game, with the total for that contest set at 142.5.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, 11 games make up the NHL's schedule for Tuesday, with Florida at Columbus, Carolina at Washington, Buffalo at Toronto, Philadelphia at Pittsburgh, Ottawa at Tampa Bay, Atlanta at Montreal, Chicago at Boston, Minnesota at St. Louis, Los Angeles at Edmonton, Vancouver at Nashville, and Dallas at Phoenix. The 38-26-10 Stars ride a three-game losing streak into Tuesday's contest, falling 4-2 in Nashville in their last game on Saturday night. The 41-25-11 Coyotes dropped a 4-1 decision at home to San Jose in their last outing on Saturday. Phoenix is 3-2 against Dallas so far this season, although the Stars won the last meeting between the teams 3-2 on the road on March 1.

Tuesday's betting tips: LeBron's Heat huge fave vs. Cavs

      Lines to watch

LeBron James makes his second trip back to Cleveland this year on Tuesday. Oddsmakers have the Heat listed as a 13-point favorite, though Miami was favored by 16.5 and 17.5 points in the first two meetings between the two teams.

      Who’s hot

NBA: Cleveland has played under the total in each of its last eight games.

NBA: Oklahoma City is 7-2-1 ATS in its last 10.

NBA: The over is 20-6 in Golden State’s last 26 contests.

NHL: Chicago has won 11 of its last 16 overall.

NCAAB: The over has cashed in on each of Colorado’s last five games.

      Who’s not

NBA: New Jersey has just one win in its last seven games, covering the spread twice over that span.

NBA: Golden State is 1-7 against the spread in its last eight.

NHL: Columbus has won just three of its last 16 games.

NHL: Edmonton has lost nine straight contests.

      Key stat

7th vs. 11th – The Colorado Buffaloes average 80.1 points per game this season, 11th best in the nation, with four players scoring at least 10 points per game. That high-powered offense meets Alabama’s No. 7-ranked scoring defense on Tuesday in the NIT semifinal. Oddsmakers have Alabama set as a 2-point favorite with the total at 143.5.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Alexander Ovechkin, Washington Capitals: There’s a chance that Ovechkin could be back in the lineup Tuesday when the Capitals host the Carolina Hurricanes. The Capitals shut Ovie down last week with an undisclosed ailment that has been bothering him for a while but he was able to practice Monday and said that he felt fine to play against Carolina. However, coach Bruce Boudreau will have the final say with this one.

      Game of the day

Miami Heat at Cleveland Cavaliers (13, 197.5)

      Notable quotable

“I don't know (what to expect). It can't get any worse than it was December 2. I know that for a fact." – LeBron James on returning to Cleveland for the second time on Tuesday. Miami has won five straight games but has covered only once in its last four.

      Notes and tips

Are the Phoenix Suns already playing for next year? Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry put center Marcin Gorat and swingman Jared Dudley in the starting lineup over the weekend, sending Robin Lopez and Vince Carter to the bench. The Suns hope Gorat will be their center of the future while it’s widely speculated that Carter won’t be back with the team next season. Phoenix is set as a 1-point favorite at Golden State on Tuesday.

New Jersey Nets center Brook Lopez has been playing through a calcium deposit in his right arm and is coming off a rotten effort in a loss to Atlanta. He managed just six points and two assists in more than 30 minutes of floor time in that game. Lopez isn’t expected to miss any time yet, but it’s a situation to keep an eye on. Meanwhile, point guard Deron Williams is still hoping to return from his wrist injury on Wednesday.

The St. Louis Blues may sit forward T.J. Oshie for Tuesday’s game against the Minnesota Wild after he missed Monday’s practice in what coach Davis Payne called an “unexcused absence.” Oshie missed 31 games this season with a fractured ankle but has rounded into form lately with three points in his last two games. Veteran Cam Janssen said the team was “pissed at him” but that the team would “move on.”

        Tuesday's six-pack

-- Froze my butt off at a college baseball game Monday; 37 degrees and 20 mph winds, just terrific. Must be fun hitting with wood bats.

-- Knicks played with desperation Monday night and beat Orlando in OT, thanks in large part to a bogus sixth foul on Dwight Howard. Ref involved was one Richard Bavetta, often known as "Dick the Knick".

-- Parker/Ginobili/Duncan all sat out, as Portland beat the Spurs 100-92 in San Antonio, despite being outscored 20-9 in the third quarter.

-- Creighton beat former coach Dana Altman's Oregon Ducks 84-76 in the first game of the best-of-3 CBI final in Omaha.

-- Toronto's John Farrell joins San Diego's Bud Black as only current major league managers who are former pitchers.

-- Was great fun watching A's-Giants Monday night, with announcers Kuiper-Krukow-Miller. I'm an A's fan, but those guys are terrific. By the way, Oakland pitchers are not allowed to swing the bat in exhibition games- they just stand there and take three strikes. Odd but smart.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

        13) So the highest-seeded team in the Final Four finished 9th in a 16-team league during the regular season. This is why only two people out of the 8.9M on ESPN.com and Yahoo have right four teams playing in Houston this weekend. It ain’t easy.

        12) The two people with the correct brackets should get guest spots with David Letterman, that’s how good an achievement that is.

        11) People in Dayton are a mix of surprised/happy that Georgia Tech hired Dayton coach Brian Gregory; Flyers made NCAAs only twice in eight years under Gregory, and his seat might’ve been getting little warm, so he hit the eject button and winds up with one of the tougher jobs in the ACC. Not that many people in Dayton are unhappy to see him go.

        10) John Calipari nabbed a $175,000 bonus for making the final Four. He has a $50,000 bonus if 75% of his seniors graduate, but only seniors he ever has are senior scrubs who most always get good grades. Pretty good scam there.

        9) I enjoyed what I heard of Charles Barkley in the studio this month; he’s always good when he tries. Was surprised how little Kenny Smith contributed; he didn’t seem that knowledgeable. I could be wrong, but I thought he was weak.

        8) Bill Self has been in the Elite 8 six times, but is 1-5 in regional finals.

        7) Calipari and Rick Pitino are the only coaches to bring three different colleges to the Final Four.

        6) Odd stat: #2 seeds in regional finals, are 18-15-2 vs spread when facing the (usually favored) #1 seed. #2 seeds are 3-8 vs spread in regional finals against everyone else.

        5) Underdogs generally rule the second weekend of the tournament, but favorites are 8-3 vs spread in last 11 national championship games.

        4) Golfer Martin Laird two-putted from 87 feet to win Arnold Palmer's tournament at Bay Hill Sunday. Laird didn’t have a great final round, but two-putting from 87 feet for the win is damn impressive.

        3) I was just reminded that I’ve never had a Five Guys hamburger; may have to rectify that situation this week. I’m told they’re pretty good.

        2) Kentucky seems like a team you could have had in the Final Four two weeks ago, but you forget they were tied with 0:10 to go in their first round game against Princeton. All of these teams are fragile.

        1) If you put $10 on VCU on the money line against USC, then let the money ride through their next four wins, all on the money line, you’d now have a juicy $13,714.

                NBA

Golden State Warriors at Oklahoma State Thunder (-10.5, 215)

Oklahoma City locked up a playoff spot with Sunday’s win over Portland to move to 9-1 straight up over its last 10 games. It was an impressive win with a playoff atmosphere and you can see how much this team has matured over the last couple of seasons.

It feels good," Kevin Durant told reporters. "A couple of years ago, we were the worst team ever. Two years later, we have clinched consecutive playoff appearances, so it feels good. We have to keep pushing."

That’s what is a little worrisome about this spot. This is the last date on the Thunder’s current six-game home stand before they head out on the road for their next four.

The Thunder have had no trouble covering run-of-the-mill spreads at home, but they have had trouble lately when set as big favorites.

                Pick: Warriors

                NCAA

Colorado Buffaloes vs. Alabama Crimson Tide (-2.5, 143.5)

The NIT can be a very tough tournament to handicap, especially when you’re looking at teams dealing with the disappointment of missing out on the NCAA Tournament.

But the Colorado Buffaloes pushed that heartache aside and now find themselves in the NIT semifinal at Madison Square Garden.

"One of my concerns when we didn't make the NCAA tournament was that we weren't going to be able to put a stamp on, make our mark on the season we had," Javon Coney told ESPN. "This has been the year where we turned the corner as a program.”

Coach Tad Boyle has done a great job getting his team up for this tournament and the Buffaloes look like a program to watch out for next season.

First though, we’ll see Colorado’s offensive attack on display against Alabama’s tough defense. This one could go down to the wire but we’ll take the points and think about a moneyline bet on the Buffs.

                Pick: Buffaloes

Washington State was 5-7 in last 12 games before winning three in row at home in NIT; Coogs are leaving Pacific time zone for first time in '11. Wazzu covered four of last six as an underdog. Wichita State is 12-4 in its last 16 games; they've played at Hawai'i/San Diego/LSU this year, so trip to Big Apple shouldn't phase them much. Pac-10 road underdogs of 5 or less points are 6-9 against spread. MVC single digit road favorites are 4-5 vs spread.

Colorado won six of its last seven games, losing by 7 to Kansas in Big 12 tourney; Buffs' last five games went over total- they lost at Georgia by 9 in their only game vs an SEC foe. Alabama won five of last six games- they lost by 8 at Oklahoma State, its only game vs a Big 12 opponent. Four of their last five games went over. Tide played at Seton Hall back in November, so they've been in Big Apple area already. Big 12 dogs of 3 or less points are 8-6 vs spread. SEC faves of 4 or less points are 7-10.

NIT tournament: Semifinals betting preview and picks
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington State vs. Wichita State (-3, 142)

                            THE STORY
: Wichita State aims to continue its surprising postseason run when the fourth-seeded Shockers meet No. 2 seed Washington State in the NIT semifinals on Tuesday in New York City. Wichita State boasts a balanced scoring attack with a 10-man rotation, while Washington State is paced by junior guard Klay Thompson, the nation’s ninth-leading scorer with 22.2 points per game.

                            TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2.

                            TRENDS:

                            - Over is 10-1 in Washington State's last 11 neutral-site games.
                            - Washington State has covered in three of its last four overall.
                            - Each of Wichita State's last three have played over.

PREDICTION: Wichita State 73, Washington State 69 – Looking for a key statistic? It might be rebound margin, with the Shockers leading the MVC at plus-7.9, while Washington State ranked eighth in the Pac-10 at minus-1.3. Wichita State’s depth could also play a role, although the Cougars’ bench stepped up against Northwestern. Washington State needs Casto to dominate inside in order to reach the NIT championship game for the first time in school history.

Colorado Buffaloes vs. Alabama Crimson Tide (-2, 143.5)

                            THE STORY
: Two of the most controversial teams left out of the NCAA tournament, Alabama and Colorado have harnessed their disappointment and turned it into positive momentum by marching through the NIT bracket to make their way to Madison Square Garden. But one team's run will end Tuesday, as the two top seeds square off in the NIT semifinals. The SEC West champion Crimson Tide and the Buffaloes, who beat Kansas State three times this season, thought they had proven enough to get into the 68-team NCAA tournament field, and now they're trying to add more evidence in favor of their arguments by locking down a spot in the NIT championship game.

                            TV: 9 p.m. EST, ESPN2

                            TRENDS:

                            - Buffaloes are 5-2 ATS in their last seven neutral-site games as underdogs.
                            - Crimson Tide are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five non-conference games.
                            - Over is 5-0 in Buffaloes' last five overall.
                            - Over is 5-0 in Crimson Tide's last five vs. Big 12.

PREDICTION: Alabama 71, Colorado 69 — In a classic matchup of a strong defensive team and an explosive offensive team, the Crimson Tide can keep their season alive if they can control the pace and keep the Buffaloes from running.
