NHL betting trends: Canucks won't coast into playoffs
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

        HOT TEAM: Vancouver Canucks

So much for complacency down the stretch. The Canucks, who hit a bit of rough patch a few weeks back, have smoothed everything out and are in position to make a deep playoff run - and perhaps make the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1994.

Leading up to Sunday’s game at Columbus, Vancouver was on a stretch of its best hockey of the season. The Canucks had won nine of 10 games and had just two losses in the entire month of March.

Goaltender Roberto Luongo has rounded into postseason form, beating Detroit and Atlanta in a three-day span last week, and the NHL scoring race that the Sedins are in with each other figures to be a dandy the rest of the way. Prior to Sunday, Daniel had 95 and Henrik had 88 points.

With a seven-point lead on the rest of the league through Saturday night, it’s easy for Vancouver to step back and relax. But it appears the Canucks will do the opposite, charge into the playoffs and continue to cash in for the bettors who can handle their high prices.

        COLD TEAM: Tampa Bay Lightning

They were a good, little story in the first half. With youth, skill and speed, the Lightning seemed intent on regaining their past glory, like in 2004, when they won the Stanley Cup.

The reality of the situation is with Washington finally finding its way in the Southeast, and Philadelphia, Boston and Pittsburgh maintaining a level of consistency despite injuries, Tampa Bay is just not good enough to escape the middle of the road in the Eastern Conference.

Through Saturday night, at 91 points, the Lightning were seven games behind Washington in the Southeast. If the season ended at that point, they’d be in the No. 5 slot and would need to play the Penguins in the first round.

Saturday’s 4-2 win over Carolina snapped a four-game losing streak for the Lightning. And with two games left in the month, Tampa Bay already has 10 losses in March.

Martin St. Louis’ tale of resurgence, with 89 points through Saturday, is encouraging. But with questions in net and perhaps a feeling that their best hockey of the season has already been played, it might be a quick postseason on Florida’s gulf coast.

        OVER PLAY: San Jose Sharks

A team that may get lost in the shuffle as pundits begin to handicap the postseason is San Jose. But the Sharks, labeled playoff busts for obvious reasons, do have the talent to challenge the Canucks. And remember, this team did make the conference finals last season.

A major key, one way or the other, will be goalie Antti Niemi. He’s been off and on this season, but he has a Stanley Cup on his resume and he has plenty of offense in front of him to snare another.

Niemi has been good, but not great. And with the goal-scoring potential on San Jose’s bench, that equates to a nice, little over recipe.

Saturday’s 4-1 win at Phoenix was the first San Jose under to hit since March 12. Overs were 5-0-1 in the previous six and even the game versus the Coyotes barely missed the 5.5-goal total.

Keep San Jose in mind moving forward. The Sharks have some rest on tap too, as they don’t play again until Thursday versus Dallas.

        UNDER PLAY: New Jersey Devils

The remarkable winter run toward the .500 mark was encouraging for New Jersey fans, who probably just couldn’t figure out what was wrong in the season’s early going. But the fact is that dreadful Devils’ start cost them a playoff spot, and head coach John MacLean his job. The optimistic end to the year will serve as nothing more than a preview for next season.

But that shouldn’t faze bettors, especially under players, because the Devils are back to playing Devils’ defense and the goal scoring has been iffy lately. That all adds up to unders - lots of them.

Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Buffalo pushed the Devils’ under streak to six (5-0-1) and, in their last 10 games, they’ve only posted one over.

New Jersey, off until Wednesday, is now 24 games over .500 with regards to unders (44-20-11), and you’re not going to get much better than that in either conference.

        Surveying the schedule:

-- The Flyers aren’t playing up to their level lately, and with a clogged schedule and no Chris Pronger, it’ll be interesting to see how they respond. Saturday’s 4-1 win over the Islanders began a nine-day stretch in which Philadelphia will play six games. The schedule is travel-friendly, as the furthest the Flyers fly in this run is Pittsburgh. But that’s a grind and will test this team as it tries to secure the No. 1 seed in the East.

-- Beware of the dreaded West Coast trip for the Stars. Starting Tuesday, Dallas will play at Phoenix, San Jose, Los Angeles, and Anaheim in a six-day period. That’s a lot of hockey and a lot of travel in a compressed time for a team that has lost three straight games and five of six.

Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Blackhawks at Detroit Red Wings (-130, 5.5)

The Chicago Blackhawks’ path to a possible playoff berth heads directly through Motown. This will be the first of three meetings between the two clubs and Chicago is desperately trying to hold on to the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

“We’ve got some big games, we’ve obviously got three on the road here,” coach Joel Quenneville said. “We’re going into a tough building in Detroit. We’ve got them three times, which are all huge games. We know the importance of it.”

Chicago has won each of its last three dates in Detroit and the club has won 11 of its last 16 overall. The Blackhawks are coming of a 2-1 loss to the streaking Anaheim Ducks that saw them give up a couple of Corey Perry goals after Marian Hossa gave them a lead in the first period.

Quenneville’s bunch catches a break in this spot as the Red Wings are dealing with a bunch of injuries. Jimmy Howard is expected to sit out after spraining his shoulder and Pavel Datsyuk is also doubtful with a lower body injury.

          Pick: Blackhawks

Colorado Avalanche at Anaheim Ducks (-240, 5.5)

If the Ducks sneak into the playoffs, Corey Perry needs to be a serious contender for the Hart Trophy. He scored his league-leading 43rd and 44th goals of the season against Chicago, helping the club to its fifth win over the last six games.

He now has 13 goals and 17 points in the last nine games with the help of linemates Ryan Getzlaf and Bobby Ryan.

“If you look at the size of the players, the skill set of the players and the compete level of the players that make up that line, we think it’s pretty dynamic,” coach Randy Carlyle told reporters. “And they proved again (Saturday) that they’re quite capable of taking our hockey club and being leaders and leading our team.”

Colorado is just playing out the stretch now so you may want to take a look at taking the Ducks on the puckline. Otherwise, just stick with the over as you watch Perry and Co. dominate.

          Pick: Over

What bettors need to know: Magic at Knicks
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Orlando Magic at New York Knicks (+1, 207)

THE STORY: The New York Knicks will look to put an end to a pair of six-game skids when the streaking Orlando Magic pay a visit to Madison Square Garden on Monday night. New York has stumbled to six consecutive defeats, including back-to-back losses to Milwaukee and Charlotte over the weekend, but still appear to be a cinch to make the postseason in the lightweight Eastern Conference. The Magic have beaten the Knicks six straight times, including a 111-99 victory in New York on Wednesday, but injury-riddled Orlando could be down to nine players for Monday’s game.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, MSG, Sunshine

ABOUT THE KNICKS (35-38): The blockbuster trade that brought Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups to New York has yielded a 7-12 record, including nine losses in the last 10 games. Watching Denver go 12-4 since the deal hasn’t help eased the panic in Gotham. Despite the recent collapse, the Knicks remain 3½ games ahead of eighth-place Indiana and two behind No. 6 Philadelphia. Center Amar’e Stoudemire had a season-low 13 points in last week’s loss to Orlando and scored only 14 in Saturday’s 114-106 defeat at Charlotte. Anthony scored 36 against the Bobcats, his highest output since coming to New York.

ABOUT THE MAGIC (47-26): Despite having all but locked up the No. 4 seed in the East, Orlando has rattled off five consecutive victories. The Magic are coming off a 95-85 win over New Jersey on Friday night, but it came with a price. Point guard Jameer Nelson suffered a sprained knee and is doubtful for Monday’s game, Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. Reserves J.J. Redick and Quentin Richardson have been ruled out of the game. Expect a heavy dose of Dwight Howard, who is averaging 29 points and 15 rebounds in three games against the Knicks this season.

WHO’S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Stoudemire is averaging 25.6 points, but he’s been held to 16 or fewer three times in the last four games. He’s shooting 39 percent (38 of 96) in his last five, well below his season mark of 50.3. …Magic guard Gilbert Arenas could start because of the injury to Nelson. Maybe it will jump-start his game - Arenas has scored 21 points on 8-of-37 shooting in his last five games.

KEY STATISTIC: Howard notched his 60th double-double of the season Friday night. That should be no surprise to New York, which has been victimized by Howard double-doubles in eight straight games.

SEASON SERIES: The Magic have won all three meetings, including 112-103 on Dec. 30 and 116-110 on March 1.

KEY INJURIES: MAGIC: G Jameer Nelson (knee); G J.J. Redick (abdominal); G Quentin Richardson (back). NEW YORK: C Ronny Turiaf (ankle).

LAST WORD: Monday’s game was originally scheduled for Nov. 2, but was postponed when debris fell into the Garden’s arena during the cleaning of asbestos-related materials in the attic above the ceiling.

                        TRENDS:

Orlando is 2-9 ATS in its last 11 games as a favorite and 1-6 ATS in its last seven games following a straight up win.

The Knicks are 0-8 ATS in their last eight games against Eastern Conference opponents and 0-6 ATS overall in their last six games.

New York is, however 24-10-2 in its last 36 games as an underdog.

The under is 17-6 in the Magic's last 23 games and 7-3 in the Knicks' last 10 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
