Heat go for 7th straight series win over Philly

    PHILADELPHIA 76ers (37-34)

    at MIAMI HEAT (49-22)

    Tip-off: Friday, 7:30 p.m. EDT
    Line: Miami -8.5, Total: 195.5

Two teams looking to solidify their playoff spots in the Eastern Conference meet in Miami on Friday night when the 76ers travel to take on the Heat. These teams would be a first-round matchup if the standings didn’t change for the rest of the season. Miami is just 1½ games behind the Celtics for second in the East, while the 76ers are two games ahead of the Knicks for sixth place, and 2½ games behind the Hawks for fifth.

Philadelphia has been one of the best teams ATS overall in the NBA this season, posting a 43-27 record. The Sixers are also 22-14 ATS on the road, which ranks in the top five. They have really taken off since the start of 2011, posting a record of 24-14 after going just 13-20 to start the season. Louis Williams scored 17 points to lead seven players in double figures in defeating the Hawks 105-100 on Wednesday, Philly’s third win in its past four games. Williams is averaging 17.8 PPG over his past six games. Philadelphia has been on fire offensively over its past four games, averaging 103.0 PPG, while shooting 47.0 percent from the field and 48.5 percent from behind the arc.

Miami is 32-37 overall ATS this season, and its 13-22 ATS record at home is the second-worst in the NBA behind Atlanta. Miami has found its way back after losing five straight games, by winning six of its past seven SU. The Heat rallied from an 11-point, fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Pistons on Wednesday night, as Dwyane Wade led the team with 24 points. Chris Bosh scored 23 at Detroit, and is averaging 21.6 PPG, 10.0 RPG and 54% FG over his past seven games. After averaging 30.3 PPG against Philly last season with the Cavaliers, LeBron James is averaging just 18.0 PPG in two games against the 76ers this season. James is just 10-for-27 from the field in their two meetings this season.

The Heat won both games this season, but both were played before the New Year when Philadelphia was struggling. Miami has also dominated this series of late, winning the last six meetings overall, as well as five straight and 11 of 13 at home (9-4 ATS). However, Philadelphia has played well ATS all season, while the Heat have really struggled, especially at home. I think Miami will win, but Philadelphia will keep it close and cover.

The FoxSheets shows two highly-rated trends siding with the 76ers:

Play Against - Favorites of 3.5 to 9.5 points (MIAMI) - a good offensive team (98-102 PPG) against an average defensive team (92-98 PPG), after 2 straight wins by 6 points or less. (35-11 since 1996.) (76.1%, +22.9 units. Rating = 3*).

PHILADELPHIA is 24-9 ATS (72.7%, +14.1 Units) after having won 2 of their last 3 games this season. The average score was PHILADELPHIA 101.8, OPPONENT 97.8 - (Rating = 3*).

Clippers go for series split with Lakers Friday

      LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS (28-44)

      at LOS ANGELES LAKERS (51-20)

      Tip-off: Friday, 10:30 p.m. EDT
      Line: L.A. Lakers -9.5, Total: 195

It’s the fourth and final round of the Battle of Los Angeles, and the Clippers have at least an opportunity to earn a split with the defending champs for the second straight season.

Of course, to get that split, the Clippers will have to bring a lot more than they did on Wednesday night. Hosting a Wizards team that was not only 1-32 SU on the road entering the game but were also short-handed because of injuries and playing in back-to-back road games, the Clippers seemed to have their easiest matchup of the season. They played little to no defense in a listless effort, allowing the Wizards to force two overtimes, shoot 48.0% from the field and score 64 points in the paint. The Clippers held on for a 127-119 win.

The Clippers have been putting up a lot of weak showings of late. They’ve lost five in a row ATS, getting blown out in Memphis before a 10-point home loss to Philadelphia, an uncomfortably close home win over Cleveland (the Cavs were within four midway through the fourth quarter), and a nine-point home loss to Phoenix before the Wizards win. They’ve scored it just fine of late, especially since leading scorer Eric Gordon returned to the lineup three games ago (23.7 PPG since his return). Blake Griffin scored 23.5 PPG on 50% shooting during their four-game homestand, with Chris Kaman (15.3 PPG on 46% FG), Mo Williams (15.3 PPG on 47% FG) and Randy Foye (11.3 PPG on 50% FG) providing solid contributions as well. But they haven’t shown much on the defensive end, as the Cavs (48.0%), Suns (48.8%) and Wizards all shot it well against them.

Meanwhile, the Lakers survived Andrew Bynum’s two-game suspension, squeaking by Portland and Phoenix at home by a combined six points. They’ve dropped three straight ATS, but have won five in a row, and 13 of 14 SU. Through the first four games of their recent homestand, they’re getting their usual strong play from Kobe Bryant (24.5 PPG on 43% FG) and Pau Gasol (21.5 PPG on 50% FG), while Lamar Odom (17.3 PPG on 57% FG and 10.5 RPG) filled in admirably for Bynum. It has been defense that has been carrying the Lakers. Tuesday night’s win over Phoenix was the first time since the All-Star break that an opponent has scored 100 points in regulation against them.

The Lakers are technically the home team, and while the teams share the Staples Center, there will be some subtle changes. The Lakers dim their “lights out” lighting over the crowd when they’re the home team, making the shooting background slightly different. Also, the crowd will be even more pro-Lakers than in a Clippers “home” game, with no Clippers season-ticket holders getting their usual seats. The Lakers have actually lost three of four SU and five in a row ATS when they’re “visiting” the Clippers. But they’ve won seven in a row SU while going 5-2 ATS as the home team in this series, including a 13-point win in February.

Considering the return of Bynum and the Clippers’ recent lackluster play, I think the Lakers win and cover with ease. One of a few trends from the FoxSheets that back up the Lakers selection is:

L.A. CLIPPERS are 12-28 ATS (30.0%, -18.8 Units) versus good offensive teams - scoring 99+ points/game - 2nd half of the season over the last 2 seasons. The average score was L.A. CLIPPERS 96.6, OPPONENT 106.8 - (Rating = 2*).
