    Daily Sports Roundup: March 23

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Spurs play on the road against the Nuggets, the NIT finishes its quarterfinal round, and the Red Wings get a visit from the Canucks.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

A dozen games make up the NBA's slate for Wednesday, with Indiana at Charlotte, New Jersey at Cleveland, Atlanta at Philadelphia, Memphis at Boston, Miami at Detroit, Orlando at New York, Utah at Oklahoma City, Sacramento at Milwaukee, Golden State at Houston, Toronto at Phoenix, Washington at the Clippers, and San Antonio at Denver. The Spurs (57-13 SU, 39-29-2 ATS) are coming off a 111-96 home win over Golden State on Monday night, but Tim Duncan left that game with an ankle injury and is listed as out indefinitely. The Nuggets (42-29 SU, 37-31-3 ATS) are coming off a 123-90 home trouncing of Toronto on Monday night, but they're 0-3 against the Spurs so far this season. San Antonio covered the spread in two of those three victories over Denver.

The College Basketball Invitational event stages its semifinals on Wednesday night, with UCF at Creighton and Boise State at Oregon, while the NIT offers up its final three quarterfinal matchups: Charleston at Wichita State, Northwestern at Washington State, and Miami at Alabama. The Hurricanes got past Missouri State 81-72 in their second-round matchup; Durand Scott picked up 20 points for Miami in that victory. The Crimson Tide, meanwhile, topped New Mexico 74-67 in their second-round contest; Tony Mitchell had 23 points for Alabama. The NIT semifinals will take place in New York on March 29.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are four games on the NHL's schedule for Wednesday, with Florida at Chicago, Anaheim at Dallas, Calgary at San Jose, and Vancouver at Detroit. The 47-17-9 Canucks were beaten 3-1 at home by Phoenix in their last game on Friday night, while the 43-21-9 Red Wings will be looking to bounce back from a 5-4 shootout loss to Pittsburgh on Monday night. Detroit is 2-1 against Vancouver so far this season, and they beat the Canucks 2-1 in a shootout on the road in an UNDER result when the teams last met January 8. Johan Franzen scored in regulation time for the Red Wings in that win, while Jimmy Howard stopped 34 of 35 Vancouver shots. Daniel Sedin provided the marker for the Canucks in that loss, and Roberto Luongo made 32 saves that night.

Wednesday's betting tips: Fade Spurs without Duncan?

      Who’s hot

NBA: The over has taken the cash in 10 of Charlotte’s last 12 home games.

NBA: The 76ers have covered in each of their last four matchups with the Atlanta Hawks.

NBA: Memphis has covered in each of its last 10 trips to Boston.

NHL: Vancouver has won 20 of its last 28 road games.

NCAAB: The under is 9-3 in Central Florida’s last 12 contests.

      Who’s not

NBA: New Jersey is just 7-19 against the spread in the team’s last 26 road games.

NBA: Miami has covered just four times over the last 13 games.

NHL: Florida has won just four times in its last 14 games.

NHL: The under has cashed in only eight times over Calgary’s last 30 games.

NCAAB: Boise State is just 7-15 against the spread in its last 22.

      Key stat

6 – The San Antonio Spurs allow six more points per 100 possessions when Tim Duncan isn’t on the floor. The 34-year-old big man is expected to be out of action for the next two or three weeks after spraining his ankle on Monday. The Spurs, who are 3-5 ATS in their last eight games, sit in the middle of the pack allowing a little more than 97 points per game and their defense will likely take a hit without Duncan’s presence in the paint.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Rudy Gay, Memphis Grizzlies: The Grizzlies will have to get by without the services of 24-year-old forward Rudy Gay for the remainder of the season. Gay sought a second opinion on his injured left shoulder and received nothing but bad news - he's now scheduled to undergo season-ending surgery. Gay finished the year scoring 19.8 points per game while adding 6.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per contest.

      Game of the day

San Antonio Spurs at Denver Nuggets (-3.5, 210.5)

      Notable quotable

"You can't move, can't change speeds (or) be as aggressive as you want to, especially driving to the cup. It's a sharp pain that I can't really deal with. I've got to find a way to get it well enough to play Wednesday. It’s a big game.” – Charlotte Bobcats leading scorer Stephen Jackson about trying to tough it out with his hamstring injury. Jackson is putting up 18.9 points per game as the Bobcats get set to host the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday.

      Notes and tips

The Miami Hurricanes top scorers Malcom Grant and Durand Scott are both looking to get their club to the NIT semifinals in New York with a win over Alabama on Wednesday. Grant and Scott have some extra motivation as both hail from the Big Apple, so expect them to step up against the Tide’s tough defense. Grant leads the team with 15 points per game while Scott is averaging almost 20 points over the club’s last two games.

The Philadelphia 76ers have finally caught a break with their schedule. After the club played four games over five days to finish off a West Coast road trip, the 76ers have spent the last couple of days getting used to East Coast time and getting ready for Wednesday’s date with the Atlanta Hawks. The time off has been huge for Andre Iguodala, who sat out Saturday’s game with knee tendinitis but expects to play Wednesday. The 76ers are currently listed as a 6-point favorite.

The Vancouver Canucks are just about locked into the top spot in the Western Conference so don’t be surprised if they use the stretch run to rest some of their regulars down the stretch, especially now that they know center Manny Malhotra won’t play again this season after suffering a gruesome eye injury. Mikael Samuelsson will sit out Wednesday’s game against the Red Wings with an undisclosed ailment though Detroit may also be without Pavel Datsyuk, Jiri Hudler, Johan Franzen and Todd Bertuzzi again, so depth will come into play for both teams.

        Wednesday's six-pack

-- Every NFL scoring play will automatically be reviewed by the replay official from now on, saving coaches from wasting replay challenges on those plays. Seems like a positive rule change.

-- I'm watching Mountain State play Pikeville for the NAIA national title. Pikeville is in Kentucky, Mountain State in West Virginia. Game is pretty good, but where do these schools recruit players?

-- Washington State's DeAngelo Casto is suspended for Wazzu's NIT game with Northwestern; he's the third Coog starter to be suspended this semester, all for off-court issues.

-- Looks like Seattle Mariners will have five non-roster players make its Opening Day roster, meaning they've got to slice five guys off 40-man roster. That doesn't happen very often.

-- Butler's live Bulldog mascot can't go to NCAA games because live mascots are banned at NCAA tourney games. That rules probably has lot more to do with LSU's Mike the Tiger or Colorado's Ralphie.

-- Speaking of Ralphie, Colorado is the first team to make the NIT Final Four; Buffaloes beat Kent State 82-74. Maybe this takes some of the sting out of not making the NCAAs. Will Ralphie be in the Big Apple?

        Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week thoughts.........

        13) Bruce Pearl would be a natural for TV, but the question is this: Do you reward a guy who got fired for breaking the rules, then lying about it? Do you think the NCAA goes to its broadcast partners and quietly asks them not to hire Pearl? I’m just asking…….

        12) Tennessee gets my vote as the team that played its worst in NCAAs last weekend, simply a tank job performance, getting outscored 44-16 by Michigan after trailing 31-29. Vols’ AD Hamilton should get fired too- he did hire Lane Kiffin as football coach, after all.

        11) Best team last weekend was clearly VCU, which won three games, all by 13+ points, despite being an underdog in all three. Not inconceivable that Shaka Smart could be the man who replaces Pearl in Knoxville.

        10) There have been 26 Division I coaching changes so far this season, with only three of the 26 vacancies filled. The domino effect will create even more openings as the spring goes on, with coaches at smaller schools moving up.

        9) When a coach gets fired like Pearl just did, all that school’s recruits should automatically be released from anything they signed; like it or not, the kid signs with the coach, not the school. This is why a couple kids have refused to sign the Letter of Intent, since it’s a one-way street in favor of the school.

        8) Pearl, by the way, got a severance package of $948,728 on his way out of Knoxville. Quick math says I need to work a little less than 19 years to make that much money, and I'd have to stay employed the entire time.

        7) I enjoy Bill Raftery a lot as a college basketball analyst, but a little less when he works with Verne Lundquist; the two go down memory lane into the 50’s and 60’s a little too much when working together. Both are better with younger partners.

        6) Read today where Sandy Koufax and Tim Hudson have the same exact career record (165-87); my Brooklyn-born father just loved hearing that statistic. Actually, he just laughed at me.

        5) Jake Fox of the Orioles hit seven HRs all of last year; he’s hit eight this spring. Doing his best to force his way onto an improved Oriole roster.

        4) Want to feel old? Captain Kirk turned 80 Tuesday. William Shatner, one of the great characters of our time who is still doing commercials, is now 80 years old. Wow.

        3) Detroit’s population went down 25% in the last decade, according to the recently-complete census.

        2) Odd fact of the day; Five current NFL owners served in World War II.

        1) Sunday was the 1-year anniversary of my last Cherry Coke (or any soda, for that matter). Has it helped? I would say yes. I’m thinner (still not thin enough), have more energy (still don’t sleep enough), so I would say yes. Still crave the stuff, though. Used to drink 3-4 every day, even for breakfast. Nothing quite like a Cherry Coke/Cheetos breakfast.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                NBA

Orlando Magic at New York Knicks (+1.5, 202.5)

The Knicks have struggled since going through their honeymoon phase with Carmelo Anthony, though after some interesting comments about “waiting for next year” earlier this week, Anthony has changed his tune.

Now ‘Melo thinks his club can turn it around in the playoffs even though the club has dropped six of its last seven both straight up and against the spread.

"I believe, we believe that something will get turned around quickly," Anthony told reporters. "We have a little bit under a month to get this thing right to get ready for the playoffs. And right now, we're just figuring it out on the go. As long as we figure it out by the time the playoffs come, I'm not really too concerned about what's going on right now and how it's going on.”

Still, that’s not exactly the kind of reassurance Knicks bettors are looking for at the moment. Meanwhile, the Magic have won three straight but have covered only once in the last nine games so it’s a tricky line here.

Until the Knicks show some signs of turning it around, we have to side with the Magic in this spot.

                Pick: Magic

                NCAA

Miami Hurricanes at Alabama Crimson Tide (-5.5, 130)

The Hurricanes and Tide square off for a chance to take part in the NIT semifinals at Madison Square Garden in a match that pits Miami’s hot offense against Alabama’s tight defense.

Miami has put up at least 80 points in its first two wins of the tourney and rebounded after a slow start to down Missouri State 81-72 as a 5-point favorite on Monday.

Durand Scott, who averages 13.5 points this season, put up 20 points in the win after dropping 19 points in the team’s opening win over Florida Atlantic.

"We're a young team," UM coach Frank Haith told reporters "This team knows we're going to be together next year. We want to play in the NCAA Tournament. These games are important in getting some growth towards that."

Alabama represents a tough test here, but Miami’s scoring should be able to least keep the Hurricanes close down to the buzzer.

                Pick: Hurricanes

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anaheim Ducks at Dallas Stars (-140, 5.5)

The Ducks and Stars head into this game in a three-way tie with Calgary for the last playoff spot in the Western Conference, so the postseason implications here are pretty obvious.

Anaheim is the hottest of the three teams, having lost just twice over the last 10 games. Corey Perry scored twice, including the game winning marker in overtime as the Ducks earned a huge 5-4 victory over Calgary on Sunday.

The club also scored twice on three power-play chances, snapping a cold spell that had saw the unit click on only five of its last 49 opportunities before that.

"We have been practicing a lot," Teemu Selanne told reporters of the team’s power play. "We know the power play hasn't been that good lately. Getting a couple of goals is a good confidence boost going on the road. The PP can win a lot of games."

The Stars have been pretty good on the penalty kill lately but they’re also a little banged up in this one. It’s hard to pass on a hot Anaheim club at this price.

                              Pick: Ducks

Calgary Flames at San Jose Sharks (-180, 5.5)

While the New Jersey Devils have gotten most of the spotlight for their amazing in the second half, the San Jose Sharks have been nearly as impressive.

San Jose is 21-4-3 in its last 28 games, moving into top spot in the Pacific Division. The Sharks look in good shape but they still have to be wary of the streaking Coyotes and the Los Angeles Kings.

"You look at that three through eight and that can really change the next two weeks," forward Dany Heatley told the Sharks' official website. "You want to have the highest seed as possible obviously for home ice and things like that. These last nine games are going to mean a lot."

Heatley will be back in the lineup against Calgary after serving a two-game suspension for elbowing Dallas’ Steve Ott, though Rookie of the Year candidate Logan Couture is questionable with a knee injury.

We expect to see some goals in this one.

                              Pick: Over
