    Daily Sports Roundup: March 22

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Capitals head to Philadelphia to take on the Flyers, while the Lakers play host to the Suns, and the NIT quarterfinals get underway.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Three games make up the NBA's schedule for Tuesday, with Chicago at Atlanta, Washington at Portland, and Phoenix at the Lakers. The Suns and Lakers last met on the hardwood on January 5 in Phoenix, with Los Angeles winning 99-95 as a 4.5-point road favorite. Kobe Bryant scored a team-high 24 points for the Lakers in that contest, while Andrew Bynum was good for 14 points, and Lamar Odom chipped in with 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Jared Dudley led the Suns' attack with 21 points in that January defeat, and Steve Nash was good for 11 points and 10 assists that night.

The CollegeInsider.com Tournament finishes off its quarterfinals on Tuesday with Ohio at East Tennessee State, Buffalo at Iona, and Santa Clara at San Francisco, while the quarterfinals of the NIT begin with Colorado hosting Kent State at the Coors Events Center. The Buffaloes advanced to the quarterfinals by getting past California 89-72 in their second-round matchup; Alec Burks tossed in 25 points for Colorado in that victory. The Golden Flashes knocked off Fairfield by a score of 72-68 in their second-round NIT contest, with Randal Holt scoring 22 points for Kent State in that tournament matchup.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, there are 10 games on the NHL's Tuesday slate, with New Jersey at Boston, Ottawa at Carolina, Florida at the Rangers, Buffalo at Montreal, the Islanders at Tampa Bay, Edmonton at Nashville, Toronto at Minnesota, Columbus at Colorado, St. Louis at Phoenix, and Washington at Philadelphia. The 42-21-10 Capitals blanked the Devils 3-0 in New Jersey in their last game on Friday night, while the 44-19-8 Flyers are coming off a 3-2 win over the Stars in Dallas on Saturday. Philadelphia is 2-1 against Washington so far this season, winning their most recent matchup 3-2 in overtime as a -150 home favorite on January 18. Andrej Meszaros scored the winner for the Flyers in that contest.

Tuesday's betting tips: Ovechkin sits out

      Who’s hot

NCAAB: Iona has covered the number in six of its last eight contests and is set as a 7.5-point favorite against Buffalo on Tuesday.

NHL: The New York Rangers have won their last four games and six of their last seven.

NBA: The under is 10-3 in Chicago’s last 13 overall.

NBA: 13 of the last 16 meetings between the Wizards and Trail Blazers have played under.

      Who’s not

NCAAB: The under has cashed in on just three of Colorado’s last 14 home games.

NHL: Columbus has only two wins in its last 12 contests.

NHL: The Tampa Bay Lightning have won just twice over the last 10 games.

NHL: Carolina has just two wins over its last seven games.

      Key stat

6 – Each of the Phoenix Suns’ last six games have played under the total. Point guard Steve Nash returned to the lineup three games ago and has helped the offense rebound a bit after a slump earlier this month, but the club is actually playing a bit of defense. The Suns have allowed 100 points only once in the last four games. Phoenix normally allows more than 105 points per game.

      Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

The Washington Wizards could be without Andray Blatche (shoulder), Nick Young (knee), and Josh Howard (knee) again on Tuesday. Blatche and Young are currently considered questionable, while Howard is listed as doubtful.

      Game of the day

Chicago Bulls at Atlanta Hawks (4, 180)

      Notable quotable

“We’ve had ups and downs this year, but coach has really been pushing us to work harder. That’s what we talked about at halftime before we came out the way we did. I was able to shoot more and get my teammates more involved today.” – Washington Wizards rookie John Wall after he dropped 26 points in Sunday’s win over the Nets. It was just the team’s second win over its last 15 games and the banged-up Wizards will look for their second road win of the season Tuesday at Portland.

      Notes and tips

The Washington Capitals are sitting captain Alex Ovechkin down for the next week or so as he deals with an undisclosed injury. There have been rumors that the left winger has been playing through an injury for most of the season and the team feels like this is the time to give him some rest as it enjoys a light schedule over the next while. However, he’s out for Tuesday’s game at Philadelphia with the Caps set as a +150 underdog. Ovechkin leads the team with 29 goals and 77 points this season.

Andrew Bynum will sit out Tuesday’s game against the Lakers after being suspended for two games for a flagrant foul on Friday. Bynum delivered a forearm shiver to Minnesota’s Michael Beasley in the fourth quarter of a 106-98 win with the Lakers favored by 14 points. The Lakers narrowly slipped by the Portland Trail Blazers and dropped their second straight against the number while Bynum was serving the front end of his suspension.

San Antonio veteran forward Tim Duncan left Monday’s game against Golden State with a sprained ankle and was not expected to return. Initial X-rays came back negative, but CBS is reporting that Duncan, who was just given a night off to rest, could be out for two weeks. The Spurs are off Tuesday but kick off a three-game road set Wednesday in Denver.

        Tuesday's six-pack

There are 347 Division I college basketball teams; here are how teams in the Big East rank nationally, as far as non-conference schedules go........ Maybe this explains the league's weak showing in the NCAAs.......

        School Non-Conf School Non-Conf
West Virginia 14 Notre Dame 208
        Georgetown 34 Pittsburgh 217
        St John's 77 Marquette 247
        Seton Hall 93 Louisville 277
        South Florida 127 Rutgers 293
        Villanova 162 DePaul 325
        UConn 163 Cincinnati 327
        Syracuse 194 Providence 329

        ********************

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

        13) Hey there’s a kid at Arizona State who won a national championship in wrestling, despite being born with one leg!!! What an inspiration this kid must be; takes lot of guts to be a wrestler, but man, to become such a great athlete when you're born without a leg, thats special.

        12) TV ratings for the NCAA tournament are up 17%, which is good news for my favorite sporting event.

        11) Out of the 5.9M people who entered brackets in ESPN’s contest, only one bracket has 15 out of 16 teams still alive. That person should probably be drug-tested.

        10) New Jersey Giants are only NFL team that isn’t requiring season ticket holders to send them money this spring; Giant fans don’t have to send their 2011 money in until this whole lockout thing has been resolved. Good for the Giants. Not sure what it says about the Jets, who they share their brand-new stadium with.

        9) Is Luis Castillo the happiest man on earth today? Cut by the Mets despite being owed $6M, Castillo then gets picked up by the Phillies, the best team in that division. Its his lucky day.

        8) Texas Tech hired Billy Clyde Gillispie as basketball coach, a huge upgrade over Pat Knight. Gillispie has already won in the Big 12, with Texas A&M, so he can do it again, though Tech is a harder job than A&M, being in west Texas and all.

        7) Jerry Glanville is the new head coach of the Hartford team in the UFL; rumor has it that Marty Schottenheimer may become the coach of the UFL’s Virginia team fairly soon.

        6) Please say a prayer for NFL Films boss Steve Sabol, who has a brain tumor and is starting treatment soon. Those of us who love the NFL have all been touched by Sabols’s great film work chronicling the league’s history. Hope he gets well soon.

        5) Last year, 20.5% of NFL kickoffs were touchbacks; would love to know the percentage of kick returns that had a penalty flag thrown during the runback. More touchbacks equals less returns, less injuries, less penalties, quicker games.

        4) Five times this season the Celtics have had a home game one night, a road game the next; they’ve won/covered the first game all five times, but are 1-4 SU (0-5 vs spread) the second night.

        3) They had 5.2 inches of rain in Santa Barbara Sunday, the wettest day ever in that California town.

        2) How much money has our government wasted trying to prosecute Barry Bonds? Enough already. There are better ways to spend money.

        1) People who are interested in becoming minority investors in the Mets must be thrilled that they cut Castillo and Ollie Perez this weekend, thereby eating $18M in guaranteed contracts. I wouldn’t trust the Wilpons with change to ride the bus; they’re either incompetent, stupid, crooked or all of the above.

After a hard-fought loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Trail Blazers need to be careful not to overlook the Wizards, who still have only one straight up victory on the road this season.

Portland ended up dropping an 84-80 decision to L.A. on Sunday and it doesn’t sound like coach Nate McMillan is content with staying competitive as the club continues on its playoff push.

"Once again, we have control of a game, and we don't execute down the stretch, and (the Lakers) tighten up their defense," McMillan told reporters. "We have a few turnovers and miss a few shots. We had an opportunity. The things we've been doing well, we didn't do them.”

Meanwhile, Washington actually looked pretty good in a 98-92 win over New Jersey as a 2.5-point underdog on Sunday thanks to 26 points from rookie John Wall, but you have to think Portland – which has covered in four straight - comes out looking for blood in this one.

                      Pick: Trail Blazers

                      NCAA

Kent State Golden Flashes at Colorado Buffaloes (-9, 153)

You can’t blame the Golden Flashes for being pretty pleased about their run in the NIT so far. They became the first team to win its first two games on the road since the tournament switched back to 32 teams in 2007.

And they had to overcome some adversity in a 72-68 win over Fairfield as a 5.5-point underdog on Sunday. Starting point guard Michael Porrini was forced to leave the game with five minutes remaining when he had his bell rung on a screen.

''We're resilient and tougher than any team I've had as a head coach,'' KSU coach Geno Ford told reporters. ''Here we are at the end of the game without our best player and have guys step right in and keep us from missing a beat. No one on this team is afraid to compete or lay it on the line.''

Word has it that Porrini should be OK to go Tuesday against Colorado, but the Golden Flashes will need a huge game to stay within striking distance here. We’re not counting on it considering the roll the Buffaloes are on right now.

                      Pick: Buffaloes
