    Daily Sports Roundup: March 21

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Celtics travel to New York for a game against the Knicks, while the NIT finishes its second round, and the Flames play in Los Angeles.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up seven games on Monday, with Orlando at Cleveland, Indiana at New Jersey, Sacramento at Chicago, Utah at Memphis, Golden State at San Antonio, Toronto at Denver, and Boston at New York. The Celtics improved to 49-19 SU and 32-34-2 ATS with an 89-85 win in New Orleans in their last game on Saturday night; Ray Allen led the way with 20 points for Boston in that victory. The Celtics are 2-0 against the rival Knicks so far this season, winning their most recent matchup 118-116 in New York as a 4-point favorite on December 15. Paul Pierce poured in 32 points for Boston in that game, while Allen scored 26 points and Kevin Garnett picked up 20 points and 13 rebounds. Amare Stoudemire tossed in 39 points for the Knicks in that losing cause.

In college hoops quarterfinal action on Monday it's SMU at Northern Iowa in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament and Davidson at Creighton, Duquesne at Oregon, Evansville at Boise State, and Rhode Island at UCF in the College Basketball Invitational event. There's also second-round action in the NIT on Monday, with Missouri State at Miami, Oklahoma State at Washington State, and New Mexico at Alabama. The top-seeded Crimson Tide knocked off Coastal Carolina 68-44 in the first round of the tournament last Tuesday, while fourth-seeded New Mexico is coming off a 69-57 first-round win over UTEP. The quarterfinals of this year's NIT will get underway on Tuesday.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are just two games on the NHL's Monday schedule, with Pittsburgh at Detroit and Calgary at Los Angeles. The Kings fell to 40-26-6 on the season with a 2-1 overtime loss to Anaheim in their last game on Saturday night; Dustin Brown scored the lone Los Angeles goal in that contest, while Jonathan Quick stopped 23 of 25 Anaheim shots. The Kings and Flames last met on February 5 in Calgary, with Los Angeles winning 4-3 in a shootout. Brown, Rob Scuderi, and Justin Williams all scored for the Kings in that win, while Quick made 32 saves. Alex Tanguay (with two) and Robyn Regehr had the markers for the Flames, while Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 30 Kings shots.

Monday's betting tips: Boozer's back for Bulls

      Who’s hot

NBA: Cleveland has played under in four straight games and six of its last seven.

NBA: Denver has covered in six of its last seven matchups with the Toronto Raptors.

NCAAB: The under has cashed in on six straight Oklahoma State games.

NHL: The Detroit Red Wings have played under in seven of their last 10.

      Who’s not

NBA: Orlando has covered just twice over the last 10 games.

NBA: Memphis is just 3-10 against the spread in its last 13 dates with Utah.

NBA: New Jersey is just 1-9 ATS in its last 10 games against Indiana.

NCAAB: Duquesne has covered just twice over the last 10 games.

NHL: Los Angeles has won only nine of its last 35 meetings with the Calgary Flames.

      Key stat

12 – The Alabama Crimson Tide has covered in the number in 12 of their last 14 home games heading into Monday’s home game against New Mexico Lobos. Top-seeded Alabama is coming off a blowout victory over Costal Carolina in the first round of the NIT, while the Lobos downed UTEP 69-57 as a 6.5-point favorite. The Tide are 15-6 ATS in their last 21 games overall and are pegged as a 4.5-point favorite for Monday’s game.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Deron Williams, New Jersey Nets: Williams is expected to sit out three more games with his right wrist injury in hopes that after that he’ll be able to play in the team’s last dozen games. Doctors told Williams that he likely won’t need surgery and that rest alone should be enough to get him back in the lineup. The big question is whether sitting out three games will be enough or if the team may have to shut him down for the rest of the season. New Jersey hosts the Indiana Pacers as a 1.5-point underdog on Monday.

      Game of the day

Boston Celtics at New York Knicks (N/A)

      Notable quotable

"I think everybody wants an ideal situation where it's all campfires and singing and all that, but it's just not going to be that way," New York Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni told reporters about rumoured friction between Carmelo Anthony and some of his teammates. "We have a lot of high stakes right now, and as you see there's people that want to getcha. Again, it's nothing bad, that's just the way it is.”

      Notes and tips

The Chicago Bulls are expected to welcome Carlos Boozer back to the lineup Monday when the club hosts the Sacramento Kings on Monday. Boozer has missed the last five games with a left ankle sprain, though Chicago didn’t seem to miss him much, going 4-1 against the spread over that span. Boozer averages 18.3 points and 9.6 rebounds per game this season.

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke was ejected from Sunday’s loss to the New York Rangers after being assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for elbowing Ryan McDonagh. Considering Cooke’s history with suspensions and the league’s recent stand on head shots, he could face a stiff suspension. Cook has 12 goals, 30 points and 114 penalty minutes this season. The Penguins, who are already shorthanded without Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin up front, face off against the Detroit Red Wings on Monday.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up first week of March Madness

        13) This time last week, VCU was being ridiculed by pundits for not being worthy of being in the NCAA tournament; they were 37-1 to make it thru this weekend, but not only are they in Sweet 16, they did it by winning three games as an underdog, by 13-18-18 points. Impressive.

        12) In other words, not only is Shaka Smart, he's about to be really rich.

        11) Southwest Regional in San Antonio will have Kansas, plus numbers 10-11-12 seeds in that region, Florida State/VCU/Richmond. Lot of folks from Virginia on the Riverwalk this week. Cinderella lives.

        10) Lesson to all young ballplayers: PLAYERS MUST BE STRONG WITH THE BALL IN THE LAST TEN SECONDS!!!!!! Referees don't want to call a foul in the last ten seconds of a tight game, witness the end of the Arizona-Texas game. You must be able to play thru contact to be a great player. Its why teams do pad drills in practice, hitting players with football-type blocking pads while they shoot layups. Those drills help.

        9) Referees work 4-5 games a week during the season, but only two in the tournament; does it improve their performance? You'd think it would.

        8) College basketball needs the no-charge semi-circle under each basket, to lessen the goofy flops and making officials decide less block/charge calls. I'm thinking this is fairly obvious, but you never know.......

        7) Knicks were losing 32-9 after a quarter in Milwaukee Sunday; they got back to within 47-41 at half, but lost again, and are floundering because of a March schedule that is so game-heavy, they rarely get to have an actual practice, which is where they can refine whatever it is that they do. Lucky for them the NCAAs are going on so the media won't kill them for another week or so. Maybe they'll have it straightened out by then.

        6) BYU is headed to New Orleans, which means in a three-week span, the BYU kids will have spent weekends in Vegas/New Orleans. Do BYU coaches get stressed out that a curfew violation (or worse) could cost its team a player or three? I know I would.......

        5) VCU-Florida State will be the first-ever regional semifinal matchup with a #10 seed playing a #11 seed. Who would've thought??????

        4) Over was 11-5 in the second round, 23-24-1 for the weekend. Favorites were 8-8 vs spread in the second round, 20-28 for the weekend.

        3) Big East teams went 7-4 in first round, 2-5 in second, but the two wins in second round were against other Big East teams, so the much-heralded league went a pathetic 0-3 against other leagues in second round. Yikes.

In other words, the Big East has as many teams left (2) in the tournament as the city of Richmond (2), which is first city since LA in 2007 to have two teams in the Sweet 16. Other cities to do this: LA (2001/2007), both UCLA-USC, LA in '90 (UCLA-LMU), Philly in '88 (Temple-Villanova).

        2) Another reason #1-2 seeds are winning more and by wider margins than they used to: the new pod systems is rewarding these teams by putting them closer to home (or trying to) for the first weekend. San Diego State might not beat Temple if the game isn't out in Arizona. Michigan might be still playing if they didn't have to play Duke in Charlotte.

        1) How on God's green earth did VCU finish 4th in the freakin' CAA?

Orlando Magic at Cleveland Cavaliers (11,194)

Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy is pretty happy with his team’s play recently. The Magic have won three of the last four, limiting their opposition to fewer than 90 points in all three of those victories.

Orlando’s defense came up big and Jameer Nelson hit a trey at the buzzer to help the club to an 85-82 win over Denver on Friday.

"When you have things happen you're just able to persevere and grind it out or pull it out, no matter how you get it it's always good to show some resiliency in your team," swingman Jason Richardson told reporters after Orlando shot just 35.9 percent in the win.

Orlando may be winning, but that poor shooting is a major reason why Magic bettors have cashed in only twice over the last 10 games. This could be the game Orlando puts it all together.

                  Pick: Magic

                  NCAA

New Mexico Lobos at Alabama Crimson Tide (-4.5, 128.5)

The Alabama Crimson Tide may be without one of their top players off the bench for a second straight game when they hook up with New Mexico in the NIT on Monday.

Sophomore forward Andrew Steele suffered a concussion in the SEC Tournament and sat out Alabama’s blowout of Coastal Carolina. He’s considered questionable for Monday’s game.

Steele’s numbers aren’t outstanding – five points and 2.6 rebounds over about 18 minutes per game – but he brings a lot more to the table for this Tide team, which was just 6-6 straight up while he was hurt this year and 16-5 after he came back.

"Andrew plays a big part in a leadership role," Alabama freshman point guard Trevor Releford told reporters of Steele. "He's like a coach on the floor. We're going to need him to get to the championship."

We’ll side with the Tide here but would feel a lot better about the bet if Steele plays.

                  Pick: Crimson Tide

Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings (N/A)

The Detroit Red Wings are easily one of the NHL’s deepest teams and they’ve needed that depth during a recent rash of injuries.

They dropped a 3-1 decision at Nashville on Saturday as they dressed just 17 skaters, including only 11 forwards. The loss snapped Detroit’s four-game winning streak but the team could have a longer bench on Monday.

Pittsburgh held a 2-1 lead midway through the third period before the Rangers struck twice in 11 seconds on their way to a 5-2 victory. It was only Pittsburgh’s second loss in six games and now the club could be without Matt Cooke, who picked up a five-minute major for elbowing and a game misconduct. Considering his rap sheet, he should expect a call from the league.

"I don't think you can talk about eliminating head shots from the game, as we have as an organization, and not expect (Cooke's hit) to be examined," Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said. "It's what looks to be a contact right to the head on the play, so the league will look at that and treat it as such."

Look for this one to be a close-checking game with a playoff atmosphere.

                            Pick: Under

Calgary Flames at Los Angeles Kings (-170, 5)

The Los Angeles Kings look poised to head to the postseason after going on a nice run over the past two months. They don’t have many problems with defense and goaltending but will need some secondary scoring as they try to hold off a number of teams surging for playoff spots.

Jarret Stoll, Ryan Smyth and captain Dustin Brown make up their second line at the moment and the team is expecting a lot more out of the trio. Smyth has just one goal in his last 22 games and Brown and Stoll haven’t been much better lately.

"The expectations are, this is the time to be a veteran player," coach Terry Murray told reporters. "This is the critical time of the year. Everything is on the line, and this is where you need your veteran players to shoulder a big part of the responsibility. They know how to play, in this time of the year. “

There’s too much talent on that second line for it to keep sputtering much longer.

                            Pick: Over

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NHL betting trends: Who's hot, who's not
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

                              HOT TEAM: Phoenix Coyotes

Anyone who has watched them play at any point in the season’s second half should not be surprised. While there are more prominent teams with more name power in the Western Conference playoff race, the pesky Phoenix Coyotes will not go away, and figure to be one tough out once the postseason begins.

Friday’s 3-1 win at first-place Vancouver was a statement of sorts to that affect. It was also the Coyotes’ fifth-straight victory. They entered Sunday night’s game against Chicago with six wins in March, and owned the No. 4 seed in the West with 89 points.

One of the key factors, obviously, has been goaltending, and look no further than a back-to-back swing through western Canada last week. On Thursday, in a 3-1 win at Edmonton, Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 35 shots for the Coyotes. The next day, against the Canucks of all teams, Phoenix backup Jason LaBarbera made 46 saves.

The Coyotes play four home games this week, meeting the likes of the the Blackhawks, Blues, Blue Jackets and Sharks.

                              COLD TEAM: New Jersey Devils

It’s not often that a two-game skid lands a team in this rent district, but hear us out. Ilya Kovalchuk and the Devils, who were in the midst of a mad dash for the Eastern Conference playoffs after their worst start to a season in franchise history, may have hit a wall. And it might be time for bettors to pounce.

Back-to-back losses to Ottawa and Washington by a combined score of 6-1 on Thursday and Friday might just be what this team needs to finally start questioning itself. Already not the most mentally tough team in the league - or else they would have started better, clearly - the Devils may begin to squeeze their sticks a little more down the stretch here.

What’s more, New Jersey - starting with Sunday at Columbus - will play four road games this week, all against playoff-contending teams: the Blue Jackets, Bruins, Penguins and Sabres.

It was a great run for the Devils, and the thought that they could even make the postseason after their dreadful start is to be commended. But they woke up on Sunday in 12th place, eight points away from Buffalo, the No. 8 seed. It might be time to pack it in, and bettors should be able to take advantage.

                              OVER PLAY: Boston Bruins

Tim Thomas and the Bruins aren’t playing that well at a key time in the season and while they figure to have the talent and motivation to eventually snap out of it, bettors should be aware that the overs are flowing. Keep an eye out for them moving forward.

Thomas was pulled in a 5-2 loss to Toronto on Hockey Night In Canada on Saturday. It was the second straight over for Boston, and continued an over run that now sits at 4-1-1.

There’s a lot of controversy swirling around the Bruins these days. Whether it’s Zdeno Chara’s hit that didn’t draw a suspension, or Brad Marchand’s hit that did, perhaps it’s affecting the team's defensive play.

Either way, keep that under strong consideration on Tuesday, when Boston plays host to New Jersey. Another over may be in store.

                              UNDER PLAY: Edmonton Oilers

Edmonton’s mounting injuries have played a part and maybe the Oilers are playing a little more sound defensively because they’re so undermanned and they don’t have a choice. Whatever the reason, unders aren’t so rare anymore in Edmonton these days.

The Oilers lost to Colorado, 3-2, in overtime on Saturday. It was their second straight under, and believe it or not, their fifth under in the last six games.

Of course, all six of those games were losses for coach Tom Renney’s shorthanded bunch, but when you’re the worst team in the league, with just 56 points, who’s counting?

                              Surveying the schedule:

** The Lightning are at a critical point in their season as the Capitals don’t seem to want to slow down. A Southeast Division title might be out of the question for Tampa Bay, but the playoffs are still out there and this week, the Lightning need to make some hay. They should be rested and ready when they play the Islanders on Tuesday, then a back-to-back with the Hurricanes on Friday and Saturday. All told, it’ll be just three games in nine days, so no excuses.

** Speaking of fresh legs, monitor the Sharks over the next two weeks, as they play just four games in the next 12 days. A rare stretch at this point in the year for anyone, San Jose doesn’t even play again until Wednesday against Calgary. The Sharks would be wise to cash in on the rest.
