    Daily Sports Roundup: March 20

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NCAA Tournament finishes up its Round of 32, while the Blazers visit the Lakers, and the Sprint Cup Series takes to the track in Bristol.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has nine games on tap for Sunday, with New Jersey at Washington, Detroit at Atlanta, New York at Milwaukee, Phoenix at the Clippers, Sacramento at Minnesota, Utah at Houston, Toronto at Oklahoma City, Golden State at Dallas, and Portland at the Lakers. The Trail Blazers and Lakers last met on February 23 in Portland, with Los Angeles winning 106-101 as a 3-point road favorite in that OVER result. Kobe Bryant poured in 37 points for Los Angeles in that contest, while Pau Gasol was good for 18 points and 14 rebounds. Ron Artest had 24 points on the night. LaMarcus Aldridge led the way for Portland that game, scoring 29 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in the loss.

Over in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday it's then No. 11 VCU vs. No. 3 Purdue (-9), No. 9 Illinois vs. No. 1 Kansas (-8.5), and No. 10 Florida State vs. No. 2 Notre Dame (-5.5) in the Southwest, No. 8 Michigan vs. No. 1 Duke (-11.5), and No. 5 Arizona vs. No. 4 Texas (-5.5) in the West, and No. 7 Washington vs. No. 2 North Carolina (-3.5), No. 11 Marquette vs. No. 3 Syracuse (-5), and No. 8 George Mason vs. No. 1 Ohio State (-10.5) in the East. The top-seeded Buckeyes had no trouble with UTSA in their Round of 64 matchup on Friday, winning 75-46 behind 18 points from William Buford. George Mason slipped past Villanova 61-57 on Friday, with Luke Hancock tossing in 18 points.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The NHL offers up six games on Sunday, with the Rangers at Pittsburgh, Nashville at Buffalo, New Jersey at Columbus, Montreal at Minnesota, Calgary at Anaheim, and Chicago at Phoenix. The Blackhawks fell to 38-25-8 on the season with a 5-0 loss in Dallas in their last game on Thursday night; Corey Crawford and Marty Turco combined to give up five goals on 27 shots for Chicago in that defeat. The Blackhawks are just 1-2 against the Coyotes so far this season, but they did win their last meeting 4-3 in a shootout at home as a -180 favorite on February 27. Jonathan Toews scored twice for Chicago in that win, and Crawford made 26 saves. Adrian Aucoin, Keith Yandle, and Martin Hanzal scored for Phoenix, while Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 38 of 41 Chicago shots.

    Roaring around the track . . .

As well, the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will take to the track at Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon in the Jeff Byrd 500. Kyle Busch is the oddsmakers' choice at +350 to take the checkered flag at Bristol on Sunday, with Carl Edwards next at +600, and both Denny Hamlin and Jimmie Johnson at +700. Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch, who sit tied atop the current Sprint Cup Series standings, are both listed at +1000 to visit Victory Lane at Bristol, with Jeff Gordon and Kevin Harvick back at +1200.

Sunday's betting tips: Kobe doesn't practice, vows to play

Lines to keep an eye on

The North Carolina-Washington total opened at 155.5 and shot up to 158 or 158.5 at many books.

The Texas-Arizona total opened at 137 and has been bet up to 139.

      Who’s hot

NCAAB: The under is 8-2 in Duke’s last 10 games.

NCAAB: VCU is 7-2 ATS in its last nine games as an underdog, and 6-0 ATS in its last six NCAA tournament games.

NCAAB: Marquette is 13-5 ATS in its last 18 games as an underdog.

NBA: The Lakers are 7-1 ATS in their last eight games playing on one day’s rest.

NBA: The Thunder are 5-0 ATS in their last five games vs. teams with winning percentages under .400.

NHL: The Coyotes are 7-2 in their last nine home games.

      Who’s not

NCAAB: Kansas is 1-11 ATS in its last 12 games against the Big Ten.

NCAAB: Ohio State is 4-11 ATS in its last 15 NCAA tournament games as a favorite.

NCAAB: North Carolina is 2-8 ATS in its last 10 after scoring 100 or more in its previous game.

NBA: The Hawks are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 home games.

NBA: The Mavericks are 1-6 ATS in their last seven vs. Western Conference teams.

NHL: The Wild are 5-14 in their last 19 games playing on zero days’ rest.

      Key stat

North Carolina, which leads the nation in rebounding (42.5), usually has a massive edge on the glass over every opponent. But Sunday’s foe, the Washington Hukies, aren’t far behind, ranking 12th nationally at 39.3

      Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

Lakers star Kobe Bryant did not practice Saturday. He’s still hampered by a swollen left ankle, and now he's dealing with a sore neck from a Friday collision with Minnesota’s Martell Webster.

But Bryant assured reporters after Friday’s game that he’d play Sunday against Portland. “I’ll be ready, for sure, I promise you that,” Bryant said.

Meanwhile, it doesn’t look like Nets All-Star point guard Deron Williams (wrist) will play Sunday at Washington – he’s listed as doubtful -- and New Jersey is weighing its options going forward.

"Our options include Deron continuing to play, and we continue to treat him; other options may include just resting him for [Sunday's] game [at the Wizards], and maybe Monday [home against Indiana], or maybe shutting him down for three to five days and seeing if his wrist calms down a little bit,'' Nets coach Avery Johnson said Saturday in a conference call.

Williams aggravated his strained right wrist driving to the hoop in Friday’s 105-95 loss at Milwaukee. He shot 4 of 13 but still finished with 18 points and nine assists.

"I need to rest," Williams told the Bergen (N.J.) Record. "Until I do that, it's going to hurt and I'm going continue to be frustrated. This is affecting me so much mentally now. It's frustrating.”

      Biggest games on the slate

Washington Huskies vs. North Carolina Tar Heels (-3.5, 158)

Michigan Wolverines vs. Duke Blue Devils (-11.5, 136)

      Notable quotable

“That’s the exciting part for me. A lot of the guys probably think I’m crazy.” – Texas forward Gary Johnson, a 6-6 senior who says he’s looking forward to guarding Arizona’s 6-8 All-American Derrick Williams in the NCAA tournament Sunday.

      Tips and notes

After going a sizzling 29-3 in his bracket on the first two days of the NCAA tournament, President Barack Obama slumped to 5-3 Saturday, missing on Wisconsin, Butler and Richmond. And the President lost one of his Final Four teams in Pittsburgh. For Sunday, the President is picking one upset – Arizona over Texas – while going with favorites Duke, North Carolina, Syracuse, Purdue, Notre Dame, Kansas and Ohio State.

Florida got a major scare toward the end of its 73-65 win over UCLA when sophomore guard Kenny Boyton, the Gators’ second-leading scorer at 14.1 per game, landed awkwardly on Bruins center Josh Smith. Boynton stayed down for a few minutes and had to be helped to the locker room with what looked like a badly sprained ankle. But coach Billy Donovan afterward called the sprain a mild one, saying there was only a little swelling. Donovan said Boynton should be fine for Florida’s Sweet 16 game Thursday in New Orleans.

At last check, Illinois coach Bruce Weber said he had not decided whether key freshman Jereme Richmond will play Sunday against Kansas. Richmond was suspended for violating unspecified team rules and did not play in Friday’s win over UNLV. The 6-7 swingman averages 7.6 points and 5.0 rebounds in 22 minutes per game.

        2011 5-1 1-1 0-0 6-2

        **************************

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up third day of March Madness

        13) How does Brandon Knight go 1-8 against Princeton and then score 30 against West Virginia? Its one of those mysteries that make sports great, because there is no logical answer. Knight shone brightly Saturday.

        12) Richmond's win over Morehead State was the 10th matchup in second round between #12-13 seeds, meaning those two teams posted big upsets in the first round. In those ten second round games, the favorite is now 9-1 against the spread. Especially tough for Morehead State to play 48 hours after the Louisville upset, with Morehead being a Kentucky school, and beating them being an especially big deal for the Eagles.

        11) BYU made 14-28 from arc and pounded Gonzaga, setting up what is going to be the next great WCC rivalry starting next year. When the other guys besides Fredette are making shots like they did in this game, BYU is really hard to beat. Cougars play Florida next, the team they beat last year in OT in the first round of the NCAAs. Very interesting game.

        10) When I listen to a studio show, I want to hear former coaches/players talk about whats its like, especially coaches who are still active like Rick Pitino and Phil Martelli, who were both solid Saturday. What I definitely don't want to hear is Seth Davis of Sports Illustrated, who talks a lot but rarely says anything interesting, other than defending sportswriters. How he has this announcing gig would be an interesting question to answer.

Martelli was especially good in the studio, concise and opinionated in his comments. He has a way of sounding like a regular guy. Pitino was also good, but when he talks, he sounds like a politician running for office.

        9) Interesting time for Richmond Coach Mooney; will he accept one of the inevitable offers to coach for lot more money, or will he stay at Richmond after the school's best season, with most of his key players graduating in May? Love the way Richmond plays, the Princeton offense with athletes. Lot of guys can handle the ball and shoot the 3-pointer.

        8) Teams that run Princeton offense spend eight minutes a day practicing layups, all different kinds of twisting and turning layups, because those are the shots they get from backdoor cuts. Which is why they're better than most teams at making those layups. You excel at what you practice most.

        7) Wisconsin Badgers were 21-42 from the arc this weekend; one of their better players looks like Carrot Top. All they do is win.

        6) An obscure but oddly interesting statistic: Purdue has won 34 NCAA tournament games, but has never beaten the same team twice. Go figure.

        5) San Diego State stared the Grim Reaper in the face and didn't blink, even when down three points in overtime to Temple. Aztecs are mentally tough and it showed in their double OT win over an Owl squad that got tired at the end. Some of these teams don't play more than seven guys, and playing two days in row, with the second game in OT, really can be draining.

        4) Jacob Pullen looks a lot like Baron Davis, and he plays like him too, and thats a big compliment; he carried Kansas State this season, and he damn near carried them to the Sweet 16. Watching him being so emotional in the postgame press conference reminds us that these are kids, and they make mistakes, but at the end of the day, they love what they do and they care deeply about winning, which is why its so much fun to watch/analyze.

        3) TV people are trying to weave ratings magic, putting Syracuse on in the 7:40 timeslot Sunday, Illinois (Chicago) in the 8:30 slot and Notre Dame in the last game of the night. Not sure Washington Huskies are thrilled with a noon tipoff in Charlotte against the Tar Heels, though.

        2) Its easy to criticize when things get screwed up, but the changes to this year's tournament on the TV end have been positively received from just about everyone I've talked to: You can switch yourself to any game you want, announcers encourage you to do that, and ratings are up. This is my favorite event of the year, and I'm glad it remains a great thing to watch.

        1) Back when ESPN started 30+ years ago, they showed most of games in the tournament, then re-ran games all night, so really you could watch TV for 80 hours or so just watching tournaments. It was awesome, just great fun. Well now with CBS re-running games on CBS College Sports, those days are back. I can stay up all night watching re-runs of games. Great!!!

                Sunday, March 20

                First Post

Playing North Carolina in Charlotte at noon ET ain't best scenario for a Washington team that won its last four games, three by 3 or less points. Huskies play #22 pace, North Carolina #14, so should be lot of points scored here. UNC had an easy time Friday, shooting 51% and getting to line 42 times; you wonder if young Tar Heels will struggle with a bigger, more athletic opponent in U-Dub. ACC non-conference favorites of 4 or less points are 6-10 vs spread. Pac-10 road underdogs of less than six points are 4-9 against the spread.

                Other tournaments
Virginia Tech rebounded from disappointment of missing NCAAs with 79-54 first round win over Bethune-Cookman, shooting 56% from the floor in game they led by 18 at half. Wichita State made 11-26 from arc in easy 76-49 win over Nebraska, holding Huskers to 34% from floor. ACC home favorites of 5 or less points are 3-5 vs spread. MVC road underdogs of 5 or less points are 7-9 against the spread.

                    NBA

New York Knicks at Milwaukee Bucks (-1, 197.5)

Carmelo Anthony owes the Knicks a check for his most recent game. The All-Star had just six points, four rebounds and two assists in 37 minutes; he finished 2 of 12 from the floor in a 99-95 loss to the Pistons.

To add insult to injury, Anthony also missed a late layup that could have tied the game. After the loss, he bolted for the team bus, but teammate Amar’e Stoudemire said it was the responsibility of all the players to work harder to execute their coach’s scheme.

"We've just got to buy into Mike D'Antoni's system," he said. "That's the way we're going to win. We've proven that it works with the team we had before the trade. And it can work with the guys we have now."

If there is one team for Anthony to get back on track against, it would be the Bucks. Melo is averaging 26.3 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists against Milwaukee this season. Equally important, his teams are 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS against the Bucks.

"We've got to stress ball movement, especially early in the shot clock," D'Antoni said. "And I told them, at the end of the 24 seconds, that's where their superstardom comes into play. You get them the ball, they'll get you a shot. But before that we have to play as a team, move the ball and get to our spots."

                    Pick: New York

                    National Invitation Tournament

Wichita State Shockers at Virginia Tech Hokies (-4.5, 129.5)

One of the Shockers’ best players is slumping.

Forward Ben Smith, the Missouri Valley Conference’s sixth man of the year, is averaging 5.2 points over his past five contests – about two points below his season average. More troubling, he has lost all semblance of an outside shot, making a mere 4 of his past 20 from beyond the arc.

"Lately, he has not played as well," Shockers coach Gregg Marshall acknowledged. "I don't know whether that's because people are concentrating on him because of the numbers he was putting up. I know he's got to play better than he has in the last several games for us to be successful."

Meantime, the Hokies have played well at home toward the end of the season. Virginia Tech is 4-1 SU and ATS in its past five games in Blacksburg. In the team’s most recent home contest, the Hokies pounded Bethune-Cookman 79-54, covering the 20.5-point spread.

“I’m not gonna lie to you and say I wanna be here,” Hokies star senior Malcolm Delaney said of the NIT. “But I play to win and our whole team has that same mindset. If we’re gonna be on the court, we’re gonna play to win.”

                    Pick: Virginia Tech
