    Daily Sports Roundup: March 19

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NCAA Tournament begins its Round of 32, while the Celtics look for a win in New Orleans, and the Kings get a visit from the Ducks.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are six games on the NBA's schedule for Saturday, with Cleveland at the Clippers, Denver at Miami, Indiana at Memphis, Charlotte at San Antonio, Philadelphia at Portland, and Boston at New Orleans. The Hornets improved to 40-30 SU and 34-33-3 ATS on the season with a 100-95 home win over Phoenix in their last game on Wednesday. As well, New Orleans edged Boston 83-81 as a 5-point road underdog in the teams' first meeting of the season back on December 31. Chris Paul led the way for the Hornets with 20 points and 11 assists in that victory, while Emeka Okafor picked up 18 points and 13 rebounds. Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo both sat out for the Celtics.

The NCAA Tournament then offers up eight Round of 32 matchups on Saturday, including No. 1 Pittsburgh (-7.5) vs. Butler in the Southeast Region. As well, it's No. 13 Morehead State vs. No. 12 Richmond (-4), No. 7 Temple vs. No. 2 San Diego State (-5.5), No. 6 Cincinnati vs. No. 3 Connecticut (-3), No. 5 West Virginia vs. No. 4 Kentucky (-3.5), No. 7 UCLA vs. No. 2 Florida (-5), No. 5 Kansas State vs. No. 4 Wisconsin (-2.5), and No. 11 Gonzaga vs. No. 3 BYU (-1). Gonzaga knocked off No. 6 St. John's in the Round of 64 on Thursday, winning 86-71 behind 24 points from Marquise Carter. BYU got past No. 14 Wofford 74-66 on Thursday, with Jimmer Fredette pouring in 32 points.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL has 10 games on tap for Saturday, with Columbus at Minnesota, the Islanders at Florida, Boston at Toronto, Atlanta at Buffalo, Tampa Bay at Ottawa, Philadelphia at Dallas, Detroit at Nashville, Colorado at Edmonton, St. Louis at San Jose, and Anaheim at Los Angeles. The 38-27-5 Ducks edged St. Louis 2-1 at home in their last game on Wednesday, with Jason Blake scoring both goals for the team in that win. Ray Emery stopped 30 of 31 St. Louis shots. The 40-26-5 Kings were blanked 4-0 at home by St. Louis in their most recent outing on Thursday, as Jonathan Quick gave up four goals on 39 shots. Los Angeles is 2-1 against rival Anaheim so far this season.

Saturday's betting tips: Walker, UConn look to stay hot

Lines to keep an eye on

BYU opened as a one-point favorite at most shops, but now Gonzaga is favored by 1.5.

      Who’s hot

NCAAB: The under is 6-1 in Butler’s last seven overall and 8-1 in Pittsburgh’s last nine overall.

NCAAB: Richmond is 8-0 in its last eight overall.

NCAAB: Florida is 6-1-1 in its last eight overall and 4-0 in its last four non-conference games.

NBA: The Nuggets are 11-1 ATS in their last 12 overall.

NBA: The Hornets are 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven overall.

NHL: The over is 6-0 in the Avalanche’s last six overall.

      Who’s not

NCAAB: Kansas State is 1-4 ATS in its last five non-conference games.

NCAAB: Temple is 1-4 ATS in its last five overall.

NCAAB: West Virginia is 1-4 ATS in its last five against the SEC and in its last five neutral-site games.

NBA: The Spurs are 1-4 ATS in their last five overall and 1-6 ATS in their last seven home games.

NBA: The Celtics are 1-5 ATS in their last six road games.

NHL: The Lightning are 1-4 in their last five road games and 1-7 in their last eight against the Eastern Conference.

      Key stat

7-1 – Record of No. 12 seeds in the eight previous games between 12 and 13 seeds in the history of the NCAA Tournament. The most recent such contest saw Arizona—a 12 seed—defeat Cleveland State—a 13 seed—in the 2009 event. Valparaiso beat Florida State in 1998 to put a 13 over a 12 for the first and only time. The ninth installment will come on Saturday when (12) Richmond goes up against (13) Morehead State.

      Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

Eric Gordon of the Los Angeles Clippers has missed six straight games with a wrist injury. "I haven't really set a timetable but I know it will be soon," the third-year guard said on Thursday. "I'm just trying to figure out when I have a good comfort level and when I'll be able to play." Gordon is listed as probable for Saturday’s contest against Cleveland, but with L.A. way out of the playoff race the team has no reason to do anything other than play it safe.

For the Cavs, Baron Davis returned on Thursday following a leave of absence (death of grandmother) as the Cavs got blown out at Portland by 41 points. Now he is dealing with back spasms and is listed as questionable for Saturday.

      Biggest games on the slate

Butler Bulldogs vs. Pittsburgh Panthers (-7.5, 127.5)

West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Kentucky Wildcats (-3.5, 132)

      Notable quotable

“You gotta make choices. Their choice was ‘Kemba’s not going to beat us.’ But he did.” – Connecticut head coach Jim Calhoun on Bucknell and its strategy to stop UConn star guard Kemba Walker. The Huskies hammered the Bison 81-52 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday as Walker did it all with 18 points, 12 assists, and eight rebounds. Walker and company have won six straight heading into an all-Big East showdown against Cincinnati in round two.

      Tips and notes

It’s hard to know what to expect for the Predators-Wings showdown on Saturday. On one hand, Detroit is on a four-game winning streak. On the other hand, the Red Wings have lost three in a row to Nashville—including 3-0 and 4-1 setbacks in February. Furthermore, both teams have considerable injury issues. Centers Pavel Datsyuk (lower body) and Jiri Hudler (flu) are questionable for Detroit, while right wingers Patric Hornqvist (possible suspension) and Joel Ward (lower body) are questionable for the Predators.

The Indiana Pacers should have a good chance to avenge a 104-90 home loss to Memphis on December 26. Rudy Gay scored a game-high 30 points for the Grizzlies, but he has been sidelined for four weeks with a separated shoulder and will be out for Saturday’s clash. Indiana will have to do a better job containing Zach Randolph, who recorded 18 point and 16 rebounds in the previous meeting. The Pacers should be able to do that with Tyler HanXXXough seeing a ton of minutes and playing his best basketball of the season. HanXXXough has scored in double-figures in 11 straight games and is coming off a 30-point showing against New York followed by a double-double against Boston.

Scootie Randall returned for Temple on Thursday, exactly one month after suffering a hairline fracture in his right foot. However, the junior forward played just six minutes in the Owls’ 66-64 win over Penn State. Temple may need Randall (11.4 ppg, 4.9 rpg) to see more action against San Diego, because the team barely went more than five deep in the first round (five guys played at least 34 minutes, no other Owl saw the floor for more than seven minutes). The Aztecs, on the other hand, featured a rotation of eight guys playing at least 10 minutes in a Thursday blowout of Northern Colorado.

        2011 ? ? ? ?

        ******************************

Saturday's List of 13: Wrapping up first round of March Madness

        13) VCU hammered Georgetown Friday, and in process validated all this play-in game/First Four stuff we've heard about all week. You can play in one of those games and still advance later on, as long as they don't give you a noon Thursday tip-off time for your next game, like Clemson had.

Starting next year, it needs to be a rule that the First Four winners play on Friday night in the next round. Its only fair.

        12) CBS will show clips of Morehead State's upset of Louisville on every one of its basketball commercials for the next decade, but fact of matter is, there is a gap between the big boys and the smaller leagues and it is getting larger. I'm thinking kids having to go to college for at least one year is a big reason why that is true. The talent gap has gotten wider.

Louisville, by the way, is the only team of the 16 seeded #1-4 that didn't make it to the second round.

        11) Since 2007, double digit favorites are 36-25 against the spread in first round games; teams that lay 20+ points are 10-5 against the spread, as the big boys have been spanking teams from mid/low major programs.

        10) Since 2009, single digit favorites are a ridiculous 15-42 vs spread in the first round of NCAAs. Big favorites are covering, small favorites aren't.

        9) Michigan is the first team ever to win an NCAA tournament game and not make one foul shot in that game. Wolverines were 0-1 Friday in their demolition of a Tennessee team that didn't offer up much resistance. Vols were outscored 42-16 in second half of what looks like it was Bruce Pearl's last game as coach at Tennessee.

        8) Big East teams went 7-4 in first round, with second round matchups of Cincy-UConn and Marquette-Syracuse already guaranteeing the bloated league two teams in the Sweet 16. Villanova ended the season losing six in a row........Georgetown lost its last five games.

        7) Texas held off a gritty Oakland squad 85-81; Longhorns have an annual athletic budget of $130M. Oakland's athletic budget is $5.9M.

        6) George Mason's win was worth $1.4M for the CAA, which is divided up amongst the 12 league schools; coach Jim Larranaga made himself an extra $26,500 as a bonus for advancing another round. Patriots were down by six at the half Friday, just like Butler was down six at the half in their first tournament game last March. Think thats an omen?

        5) Great contrasting matchup Sunday: Florida State's amazingly athletic defense against Notre Dame's offense; that should be fun to watch.

        4) Illinois was a top-10 pick back in November, but never played like it all season until Friday, when they pounded an unsuspecting UNLV squad from start to finish. Next up for the Illini is Kansas and former coach Bill Self, who has himself a harder-than-usual second round tilt for a #1-seed.

        3) As if they needed another voice in their studios, Rick Pitino will be on CBS/Turner this weekend, analyzing the tournament. Watching all games at once is great fun, but I don't get to hear most of the studio banter, which is probably just as well.

        2) Thursday's TV ratings for the tournament were the highest for the first day since 1991. People seem to enjoy the option of being to able to watch whichever game they want. It is refreshing to hear announcers encouraging you to go to another channel to watch a closer game. I like that.

        1) You watch the kid from St Peter's come out of his last college game and hug his coach, and you think of how much those seniors on the Peacocks went through, transforming a 4-24 laughingstock into a league champ. Its then that you realize the value of Championship Week, where 31 teams are crowned champions, and those are the memories those guys will carry for the rest of their lives. They'll remember beating Iona for the MAAC title more than they will losing to Purdue today.

I'm not sure the average fan realizes just how much fun being part of a team like that is, but as much fun as it is, it ends suddenly, once you lose in the national tournament. There are no guarantees, have to enjoy it for as long as you can. Survive. Advance. One game, one day at a time

                  Saturday, March 19

West Virginia beat Kentucky in regional final LY; Mountaineers won 11 of last 16 NCAA games- Huggins is 8-1 vs Calipari, whose cousin was the paramedic who saved Huggins' life when he had his heart attack in Pittsburgh airport. WVU beat Vandy by 3 in its only game vs SEC foe this year. Wildcats are 2-1 vs Big East teams, beating Notre Dame by 14, losing by 17 to UConn, beating Louisville by 15. Kentucky won its last seven games, Since 1999, underdogs are 16-7 vs spread in second round games between 4-5 seeds.

Florida won 11 of its last 13 games, with both losses to Kentucky; win over UCSB Thursday was Gators' first in NCAAs since winning title in '07- they were up 43-19 at half. Young UCLA club led Michigan State by 23 with under 9:00 left in first round but won by only a hoop- they were 30-47 from line vs State, and are still just 4-3 in last seven games. Pac-10 road underdogs of less than 6 points are 4-8 vs spread this year. SEC road favorites of less than 6 points are 3-7. Since '05, #7-seeds are 10-5 vs spread in second round games against #2-seeds.

Morehead State-Richmond is 10th second round game between 12-13 seeds in NCAA history; in the previous nine, the favorite went 8-1 vs spread. OVC has a team (Eastern Kentucky) that uses lots of Princeton principles that Richmond does; Morehead split with EKU this season, with win in OT, and EDU wasn't very good. Spiders won 12 of last 13 games, including last eight in row; they held last six of last seven foes under 60 points, have four seniors in their rotation with 2,000+-point scorer in Anderson. Since 2007, favorites of 5 or less points are 20-13 against the spread in this round.

Temple is 13-2 in its last 15 games, nipping Penn State for Dunphy's second NCAA win in 14 tries; Owls are 3-4 as underdog, failing to cover their last three tries. San Diego State won its first-ever NCAA tourney game Thursday; Aztecs won last six games (5-1 vs spread), with four of last five staying under total. Atlantic 14 road dogs of 7 or less points are 15-13 vs spread this year. MWC road faves of 7 or less points are 7-10. #2 seeds covered six of eight second round games the last two tourneys. This figures to be low-scoring, as Temple plays #245 pace, San Diego State plays #296, and both teams are in top 40 nationally in defense.

Butler won its last ten games, but they're 0-3 vs top 40 teams this year, losing by 12 to Duke, 2 to Xavier, 15 to Louisville. Bulldogs are ranked #11 team on defensive boards, Pitt is ranked 2nd on offensive boards, so if Bulldogs' first-shot defense works, that matchup will decide outcome. Pitt is just 4-3 in its last seven games, with four wins all by 10+ points. Big East road favorites of 8 or less points are 18-15 vs spread. Horizon League single digit road dogs are 11-13 vs spread this year. #1 seeds are 14-9-1 vs spread in this round the last six NCAA tournaments.

Over last three years, #3 seeds are 10-2 vs spread in second round, but during that time they were never a dog-- since 1987, #6 seeds who were favored over a #3-seed are just 2-5, both SU/vs spread. BYU is headed to WCC next year; they face WCC kingpin Gonzaga in this game, after Zags beat St John's team that played eight seniors. Gonzaga ranks #276 in experience (BYU is #101)- they shot 55% from floor, outrebounded Red Storm 41-17 Thursday. Fredette is an NBA player who can carry BYU offense for long stretches- they were only 6-22 from arc in win vs Wofford Thursday. MWC road dogs of 5 or less points are 4-5.

Kansas State won seven of last eight games; they make 37.1% of 3's, are 4th nationally in offensive rebounding (40/8%). Wisconsin made 12-22 from arc in win over Belmont; they're 3-5 in second-round games under Ryan. Since 1999, underdogs are 16-7 vs spread in second round games between #4-5 seeds. Big 11 road favorites of 4 or less points are 3-8 vs spread this season. Big 12 single digit road dogs are 8-12 vs spread this season. K-State is more athletic at every position but point guard, but Badgers' Swing Offense is tough to prepare for in 1.5 days.

UConn (+3.5) made 10-19 from arc in 67-59 win at Cincinnati Feb 27, which was Calhoun's first game back with team after his sister-in-law died. Cincinnati coach Cronin said his guards were "outplayed as badly as you can be outplayed" in that game. Huskies won their last six games behind explosive guard Walker, after stumbling to 4-7 finish in regular season. Bearcats won seven of last nine games, dismantling Missouri in first round, holding Tigers to just 37% from floor while turning ball over only 10 times vs Mizzou press. This is first time in 64+-team era that conference rivals have met this early in the tournament.

                  NIT games
Boston College won five of last six games, with four of last five going over total; they had to win first-round game at McNeese State because BC's hockey team needed this arena. Eagles are 1-1 vs Big 11 teams this year, losing by 10 at Wisconsin, beating Indiana by 12. Northwestern is 1-6 in last seven road games, with only win at Indiana; Wildcats waxed Georgia Tech by 20, in their only game vs ACC foe. ACC home faves of 8 or less points are 6-9 vs spread. Big 11 single digit road underdogs are 12-6 against the spread this season.

                      NBA

Charlotte Bobcats at San Antonio Spurs (-11, 191.5)

San Antonio All-Star Manu Ginobili isn’t reading too much into the team’s 110-80 loss to the Miami Heat this week.

"They needed the game more than us," Ginobili said. "They were more upset than us and they are a great team. We are not playing against a second-division team in Asia. We are talking about the Heat."

And with a date with the Dallas Mavericks slated for Friday night, the Spurs have been gearing up all week to be better prepared against the league’s elite. The team spent extra time in the film room this week before enduring its longest practice of the season on Wednesday. Reporters at the session noted the team typically has scrimmages ending in the 60s as far as scores. But following the marathon practice, the scoreboard read 102-95.

“Today was one of those days,” McDyess said. “We want to do the things that will lead into Friday’s game, because we’ve been lacking on defensive schemes and out of whack on offense. We want to clean up a lot of things.”

That momentum figures to carry over against the Bobcats. Charlotte has lost seven of its past 10 games and is just 4-6 ATS over that span.

                      Pick: San Antonio

                      NCAA

Cincinnati Bearcats at Connecticut Huskies (-3.5, 129.5)

So much for the curse of winning the Big East Tournament.

Connecticut responded to winning its league tournament – five wins in five days – by totally dismantling an overmatched Bucknell team in the first round, 81-52.

Kemba Walker had 18 points, a career-high 12 assists and eight rebounds to solidify his case as an NBA lottery pick. But even more importantly, he got plenty of support from the rest of the roster. Roscoe Smith poured in 17 points and Jeremy Lamb chipped in 16 for the fresh-looking Huskies.

"For a lot of these kids, everybody really except for Kemba, no one else had meaningful NCAA minutes," Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun said. "So Kemba, who's been our scorer, became our initiator. He made some big baskets, but his biggest contribution was controlling the game on the offensive end."

Cincinnati has had issues dealing with Connecticut this year. The Huskies picked up a 67-59 win in Ohio in late February thanks to Lamb and Smith, who combined for 28 points on 11-of-17 shooting, including a sparkling 4-of-6 beyond the arc.

Following that defeat, Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin was as displeased with the performance of his backcourt as any game this season. "Our guards got as outplayed as you possibly could today," he said.

Don’t expect that to suddenly change.

                      Pick: Connecticut
