    Daily Sports Roundup: March 17

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Big Dance begins its Round of 64, while the Knicks get a visit from the Grizzlies, and the PGA Tour takes to the course at InniXXXook.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has three games on tap for Thursday, with Chicago at New Jersey, Cleveland at Portland, and Memphis at New York. The Grizzlies (37-31 SU, 42-25-1 ATS) knocked off the Clippers 105-82 at home in their last game on Monday, while the Knicks (34-32 SU, 39-25-2 ATS) fell 119-117 in Indiana in their most recent outing on Tuesday. Memphis and New York met back on March 9, with the Knicks winning 110-108 as a 4-point road underdog in that OVER result. Carmelo Anthony led the way for New York with 31 points in that victory, while Amare Stoudemire tossed in 26 points in the contest. Tony Allen poured in 22 points for Memphis, while Zach Randolph grabbed 11 rebounds.

The entire Southeast Region hits the hardwood in the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, with No. 9 Old Dominion (-2) vs. No. 8 Butler, No. 10 Michigan State (-1.5) vs. No. 7 UCLA, No. 11 Gonzaga vs. No. 6 St. John's (-1.5), No. 12 Utah State vs. No. 5 Kansas State (-2), No. 13 Belmont vs. No. 4 Wisconsin (-4.5), No. 14 Wofford vs. No. 3 BYU (-8), No. 15 UCSB vs. No. 2 Florida (-12.5), and No. 16 N.C. Asheville vs. No. 1 Pittsburgh (-17.5). N.C. Asheville played their way into their matchup with the Panthers by beating Arkansas Little Rock 81-77 in overtime in an opening-round game on Tuesday night. Pittsburgh was bounced in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament.

In the Southwest Region on Thursday it's No. 13 Morehead State vs. No. 4 Louisville (-10) and No. 12 Richmond vs. No. 5 Vanderbilt (-2), while in the West Region it's No. 15 Northern Colorado vs. No. 2 San Diego State (-15.5), No. 14 Bucknell vs. No. 3 Connecticut (-10.5), No. 11 Missouri vs. No. 6 Cincinnati (pick'em), and No. 10 Penn State vs. No. 7 Temple (-2.5). Finally, the East Region on Thursday offers up No. 13 Princeton vs. No. 4 Kentucky (-13.5), and No. 12 Clemson vs. No. 5 West Virginia (-1.5). Clemson won the other Play-In game on Tuesday, getting past UAB 70-52 in Dayton. Jerai Grant poured in 22 points for the Tigers in that victory on Tuesday night.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The NHL has 11 games on its schedule for Thursday, with Detroit at Columbus, Philadelphia at Atlanta, Toronto at Florida, New Jersey at Ottawa, Tampa Bay at Montreal, Boston at Nashville, Phoenix at Edmonton, Colorado at Calgary, Minnesota at San Jose, St. Louis at Los Angeles, and Chicago at Dallas. The 38-24-8 Blackhawks beat San Jose 6-3 in their last game on Monday night, with Marian Hossa scoring twice and Corey Crawford making 33 saves. The 37-25-8 Stars fell 6-3 to San Jose in their last game on Tuesday despite a goal and two assists from Jamie Benn. Dallas and Chicago have met three times this season, with the Stars winning two of those contests.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the PGA Tour tees off in the Transitions Championship at InniXXXook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida on Thursday, with Martin Kaymer and Nick Watney pegged as the oddsmakers' co-favorites at +1000 to win the event. Paul Casey is next on that odds list at +2000, with both Retief Goosen and Padraig Harrington at +2500 to claim the trophy on Sunday. Thursday's betting tips: Latest NCAA odds, line moves

      Lines to watch

We have you covered for all of the latest NCAA Tournament odds and line moves. Among the notable moves, No. 6 seed Cincinnati opened as a 1.5-point underdog, but is now set as a 1-point favorite. Take a read through Where the action is: Thursday's March Madness odds before making your wagers.

      Who’s hot

NCAAB: San Diego State has covered in four of its last five.

NCAAB: The under is 7-2 in Michigan State’s last nine games.

NBA: New Jersey has won five consecutive games, covering the number in four of those.

NBA: Each of the last five meetings between Cleveland and Portland have played over the total.

NHL: New Jersey has lost just twice over its last 17 games.

      Who’s not

NCAAB: West Virginia is just 3-7 against the spread in its last 10 games.

NCAAB: Missouri is riding an 0-4-1 run against the spread heading into Thursday’s matchup with Cincinnati.

NBA: The over is just 2-9 in Chicago’s last 11 games.

NHL: Edmonton has lost four straight games, scoring just three times over that span.

      Key stat

3 – Remember when the Gonzaga Bulldogs paved the road for all of these mid-majors with their deep runs in the Tournament years ago? Well, it’s safe to say that was then, this is now. The No. 11 seed Bulldogs have covered in just three of their last 10 tournament games heading into Thursday’s date with No. 6 seed St. John’s, which is set as a 1.5-point favorite.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Joakim Noah, Chicago Bulls: The streaking Bulls are expected to get another boost to their lineup on Thursday with Noah coming back from an illness that kept him out of Tuesday’s blowout win over Washington. Noah practiced Wednesday and should be good to start at center when the Bulls visit New Jersey.

      Game of the day

No. 12 Clemson Tigers vs. No. 5 West Virginia Mountaineers (-2, 123)

      Notable quotable

"It's definitely motivation for us, going out in the first round," senior Brad Wanamaker told reporters about going out in the first round of the Big East Tourney. "It's just motivated us to come out and get better as a team and as a unit. We're going to be a dangerous team because we're hungry. It's very exciting, just to go beat up on somebody else instead of somebody in our own conference." – Pitt is the lone No. 1 seed in action on Thursday and is set as an 18-point favorite against No. 16. UNC-Asheville.

      Notes and tips

Wisconsin sophomore forward Mike Bruesewitz may be available to play Thursday against Belmont with the Badgers set as 5-point favorites. Bruesewitz suffered a knee injury in the Big Ten Tournament but practiced Tuesday and was scheduled to participate in Wednesday’s workout as well. The Badgers could use a boost after dropping a terrible 36-33 loss to Penn State in the conference tourney. Bruesewitz, at 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds, has been a great energy coming off the bench for the Badgers all season.

San Jose Sharks sniper Dany Heatley has been suspended two games for elbowing Dallas’ Steve Ott on Tuesday and he will serve the first game of that ban when the Sharks host the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night. Heatley has 24 goals this season and sits second on the team with 58 points in 71 games this season. San Jose is pegged as a big -210 favorite against the Wild.

        *************************

Thursday's List of 13: Welcome to the best weekend of the year

        13) Play-in games Tuesday did a 1.0 rating on TruTV, up from 0.8 on ESPN LY, so apparently enough people found the former CourtTV and watched the games. Its funny how people complained about not knowing where to find TruTV, like its hard to locate a channel on your TV. It just isn’t.

        12) Clemson’s plane landed in Tampa at 3:46 Wednesday morning, so they should be fresh as a daisy for their 12:15 Thursday game with West Virginia. Hell, Kent State won an NIT game at St Mary’s in Tuesday, and they didn’t land in California until 1:45am the day of the game.

        11) Over last two years, favorites on Thursday/Friday of first weekend are 24-40 in NCAA tournament, after having been 61-34-1 from 2006-08, and 11-20-1 in ’05. Things go in cycles.

        10) Glad to see Nebraska coach Doc Sadler get a 2-year extension; now he gets into a slightly softer league, the Big 11, which should help recruiting.

        9) Why wouldn’t Maryland/Baylor play in the CIT? If they’d play in the NIT, why not one of the other two second-tier tourneys being played? I don’t understand that.

        8) Michigan’s reserve guard Josh Bertelstein is son of agent Mark Bartelstein, who is agent for 34 current NBA players and also two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner.

        7) Former Ohio State coach Jim O’Brien hasn’t coached in seven years, but is one of the frontrunners for the Providence job, along with Fairfield coach Ed Cooley.

        6) Boston College played at McNeese State in the NIT Tuesday because the BC hockey team needed the Eagles’ home arena; a basketball player interviewed after the game pretty much said the BC players prefer playing on the road than in Boston. That’s not good.

        5) Joe Mauer was in the Twins’ lineup Wednesday for first time this spring, and got a hit his first time up, so lot of people in Twin Cities have to be relieved to see him out on the field.

        4) WR Troy Bergeron, who finished LY on Cowboys’ practice squad, signed up with the Cleveland Gladiators of the Arena League, making him the first NFL player this year to bolt to another league. The UFL/CFL will also be options.

        3) Purdue suspended its backup point guard for NCAAs; he provided depth and was the best defender off the bench. From what I read from others who know more than I do, this will hurt the Boilers.

        2) Lot of Tweets today about one Nathaniel Hale, who passed away at age 41 yesterday. Better known as Nate Dogg, the hip-hop singer. I feel old since I’ve never heard of Mr Dogg, but lot of people are saddened by his passing. 41 is too young to die, for sure.

        1) Every time I hear someone stressing about spring training stats, I think back on the year when Bob Welch won 27 games for the A’s. His ERA in spring training that season? 17.00+. Spring stats don't matter.

                Write-Up

Thursday afternoon NCAA gamesClemson’s plane got into Tampa at 3:46 Wednesday morning, so very quick turnaround for Tiger squad that shot 52% from floor in easy win Tuesday night, winning by 18 even though UAB was 12-24 from arc; last two times Clemson was an NCAA dog, they lost game in OT. Battle-tested Tigers play UNC/Duke every year, so facing Big East team won’t be big deal to them. ACC single-digit road dogs are 11-12 vs spread out of conference. West Virginia lost four of last five neutral/road games. Mountaineers are 11-5 in this event since ’05, winning four of last five 1st round games (wins by 2-18-10-27 points). #12 seeds are 6-2 vs spread in this round last two years; #12 in East is 10-5 since ’96.

Old Dominion, Butler both won their last nine games, but only three of ODU’s nine were at home; Monarchs are #1 offensive rebounding team in America, grabbing 45.2% of their own missed shots, but Bulldogs are #11 on defensive boards, so battle of strengths there. Washington site has to give ODU (from Virginia) crowd edge. Underdogs are 20-12 vs spread in 8-9 games the last eight years. ODU beat Horizon League’s Cleveland State by 11 at home last month. Monarchs have three juniors, four seniors in rotation; Butler’s has three seniors in it.

Morehead State lost 74-54 to Louisville in this round two years ago, after losing by 38 to them during season, but these Eagles are better than those Eagles, with senior Faried an NBA-ready rebounder. Morehead is 0-2 vs top 40 teams this season, losing by 6 at Florida, 19 at Ohio State. Cardinals are 11-2 vs teams ranked 95th or lower, with nine of the 11 wins by more than 10 points. #4-seeds are 12-8 vs spread in this round the last five years. Morehead hasn’t played in 11 days; Louisville played late Saturday, its third game in three nights. Interesting to see if Cards can keep Faried off boards.

Penn State-Temple scrimmaged in October, and played last two seasons (Owls won 45-42/65-59), so they’re familiar with each other; Owls are 3-5 vs top 50 teams, have only one senior in their rotation. Penn State allowed only 49 ppg in Big 11 tourney, winning three times before losing in final; they’re 4-12 vs top 50 teams, playing #2 schedule in country- they’ve got four seniors in their rotation. Temple coach Dunphy trying to shake 1-12 career NCAA record, most of which came with Penn of Ivy League. Owls are 12-2 in last 14 games, Lions won four of last five (all road/neutral). Penn State beat pair of A-14 teams, St Joe’s 66-57, Duquesne 77-73.

Until Cornell made Sweet 16 LY, Ivys had lost 11 straight first round games, with eight of the 11 losses by 14+ points; Tigers played Duke, its only game against a top 75 team, and lost 97-60. Ivy League dogs of 10+ points are 9-11 vs spread this season. Kentucky allowed just 59.3 ppg in winning its three SEC tourney games; they've won six games in row, and beat Penn of Ivy League 86-62 Jan 3. UK is 17-1 in first round games since 1988, with 13 of the 17 wins by 15+ points. One thing for Princeton is that they're the #6 defensive rebounding team in America, but their bigs can't shoot 3's like Cinderella Princeton teams of the past.

NC-Asheville won its last seven games, rallying from 10 down to win in OT Tuesday, but #16 seeds are 4-8 vs spread in this round in last three tournaments. Pitt won its last five first round games, by 15-21-19-5-23 points. Big East double digit favorites are 25-23 vs spread in non-league games this season. Panthers are just 3-3 in last six games- their last four wins were all by 10+ points. Pitt is the #2 offensive rebounding team in country. Big South teams, in non-play-in games, have lost by 43-31-14-2-10-19-21-37 points since 2002, with that one win by Winthrop.

#12 seed in Midwest is 13-4 vs spread in 1st round since '94, going 11-6 SU; Richmond won 11 of last 12 games, including last seven in row, but after winning A-14 title Sunday, quick turnaround here. Richmond held last six opponents under 60 points, has four seniors in its rotation with 2,000+-point scorer in Anderson. In two of last three tourneys, Vandy lost in first round as a 4-seed, so they've got demons to exorcize- they lost last five games vs teams ranked in top 55 (Richmond is #46). SEC teams are 7-4 vs spread in non-league games where spread is 2 or less.

Northern Colorado is 0-2 vs top 40 teams this year, losing at Arizona by 23 (on this floor), by 10 at Illinois; Bears split pair with MVC teams in '11, losing to Colorado St by 14, beating Wyoming by 14. Big Sky dogs of 8+ points are 17-10 vs spread this season. San Diego State has never won an NCAA tournament game, so no shot of overconfidence here. Big Sky double digit underdogs are 12-10 vs spread this season. Bears turn ball over 21.8% of time, which could be huge problem vs San Diego St. Big Sky teams are 1-10 in first round since '00, losing games by 5-24-19-7-19-11-28-24-- points, with one Montana upset of Nevada in '06.

                Thursday night NCAA games
UCSB upset Long Beach in Big West final, making NCAAs for second year in row; Gauchos lost by 17 to Ohio State LY. UCSB allowed 57.3 ppg in winning its last four games, but before this trip, farthest east they have been was UNLV. Big West teams lost their last five NCAA games, with all five losses by 11+ points. Florida won 10 of last 12 games, with both losses to Kentucky; only two of its last 10 wins are by more than 13 points. #2 seeds are 9-7 vs spread in first round last four years; #2 seed in Southeast is just 2-4 vs spread the last six years. Florida lost in double OT to BYU LY, its first NCAA game since winning title in '07.

Wofford got bad draw, playing in Denver, because they only use bench 21.3% of time (327th in US) and game in altitude favors team that has depth. Terriers are 2nd-most experienced team in country- Charleston is in SoCon and has explosive scorer (Goudelock) like Fredette- Cougars beat Wofford both meetings this year. BYU plays at #23 pace, Wofford plays at #270 pace. Cougars are mush better when Jimmer gets scoring help from teammates, who are limited with Fields out. #3 seeds in SE are 10-2-1 vs spread in first-round game the last thirteen years.

UConn is 2-9 vs spread in its last 11 first-round games, as Calhoun has had his teams ease their way in against overmatched foes. Huskies had historic run thru Big East tourney last week, Thursday game means they should be flat here vs Bucknell team that lost to Villanova by 16, Boston College by 4, Marquette by 14 in games vs top-level foes. Patriot League teams are 2-17 in first round, losing the last four years by 10-15-15-16 points. Big East favorites of 12+ points are 22-20 against spread in its non-conference games. Bucknell makes 40.2% behind arc (7th in US).

Belmont is fashionable upset pick; they force lot of turnovers, they use their bench 4th-most minutes in country, but they're 0-3 vs teams in the top 100, losing by 9-1-9 points to Vandy/Tennessee (twice). Ryan has an 8-1 record in first round, but Wisconsin was brutal in last two games, losing by 28 at Ohio State, 36-33 to Penn State in Big 11 tourney- they have superior PG in Taylor. Badgers don't sub much, they never turn it over, so this is interesting contrast. Atlantic Sun teams are 0-8 in NCAA games, with Belmont's 71-70 loss to Duke the closest of the 8 defeats.#3 seeds are 10-6 against the spread in first round the last four years.

Michigan State/UCLA are proud programs that aren't expected to do lot here; long trip east for Bruin squad that was putrid vs Oregon in Pac-10 tourney, after being bad at the Washington schools the week before, too. UCLA didn't play in NCAAs LY, so they only have three rotation guys who played in tourney in '09. Michigan State is 5-3 in last eight games- they've got terrific senior PG in Lucas and teamful of players who were in Final Four last two years. Spartans beat Washington 76-71 on Maui in November; they played hardest schedule in country. UCLA ranks #305 in country in experience. Lee is playing with torn cartilage in knee.

St John's has nine seniors, but they lost leading rebounder Kennedy in Big East tourney, which hurts a lot; Red Storm ranks #3 in experience, Gonzaga ranks #276, so edge for Johnnies there. Zags beat Marquette by 3, lost to Notre Dame by 4 in games vs Big East foes. St John's lost by 5 at St Mary's in mid-November. Red Storm assistant Dunlap coached for 11 years in Denver, winning two D-II national titles and working with Nuggets for two years. Gonzaga won its last nine games; they'd be well served to play some zone, since St John's doesn't shoot it well (339th in US in % of points on 3's). Zags are 6-2 in last eight first-round games.

Missouri/Cincinnati are both very athletic, but Mizzou plays #13 pace, Bearcats at #289; UC protects ball well (69th in US) and they press too forcing turnovers on 22.7% of possessions. Tigers lost four of last five games, and looked awful in the win (Texas Tech). Neither team played a strong non-league schedule; Mizzou is 2-8 in last 10 road/neutral games; they lost in OT to Georgetown in late November. Missouri won its last five first round games; they've been knocked out of last three tourneys by a Big East team. Bearcats rank #15 in defense; hard for Missouri to set up its press if they're not scoring.

WAC teams are impressive 22-6 vs spread in non-league games where spread is 4 or less points. 30-3 Utah State is team lot of national pundits are touting, but they are 1-2 vs top 50 teams, losing at BYU by 6, by 17 at Georgetown, beating St Mary's by 10 in Moraga. Kansas State wasn't playing like NCAA team in mid-season, but they righted ship and went 6-1 in last seven games, somehow going 0-3 vs Colorado. Aggies rank #7 in experience, K-State 245th. Utah State lost badly to Texas A&M LY in similar role. 12-seeds are 6-6 SU vs 5-seeds in first round last three tournaments. Big 12 teams are 14-10 in games with spread of 4 or less.

                Friday afternoon NCAA games
Oakland plays at #7 pace, faced #3 non-conference schedule in country, losing to West Virginia (24), Purdue (15), Illinois (11), Michigan St (1), Ohio State (29) with win at Tennessee. Grizzlies are 18-1 in last 19 games- they’re #3 in EFG%, which counts 3’s as 1.5 hoops- they make 55.8% of their 2-point shots. Texas is #1 in country in defensive efficiency, but was just 4-4 in last eight games (three of four wins by 12+ points); Longhorns are 7-2 in last nine 1st-round games, with six of seven wins by 12+ points (both losses came in 8-9 games). #4 seed in West is just 2-9 vs spread last 11 years, with four SU losses (three in last five years). Texas shoots just 64.5% from line.

Tennessee is 12-14 in its last 26 games since starting season 7-0; they’re 4-7 in last 11 games (no wins by more than 9 points), with Pearl being bigger distraction than any player (suspended 8 games by SEC). Vols shot only 30.4% from arc, figure to see ton of 1-3-1 from clever coach Beilein, whose young Wolverines are 9-4 in last 13 games, winning last five against teams ranked lower than #50 (Vols are #55). Tennessee likes to press; Michigan is ranked #14 in least turnovers. Wolverines make lot of 3’s playing #323 pace, so they work ball on defense, exploiting teams with short attention span (Tennessee is one of those). Big 11 teams are 14-9 vs spread in non-league games where spread is 3 or less points.

Notre Dame starts five seniors; they’re 9-0 vs teams ranked lower than 100th (Akron is #123), with eight of nine wins by 23+ points. Irish are 12-2 in last 14 games, but Akron is 11-1 in its last 12 games, with two of last three wins in OT. Zips are 0-4 vs teams ranked #73 or better (ND is #10), with losses by 13-35-8-8 points (last of those was Dec. 23). MAC double digit underdogs are 20-15 vs spread out of conference this season. Over last six NCAA tourneys, favorites of from 10.5-19 points are 19-22-1 vs spread, 8-11 last 2+ seasons. #2 seeds are 10-14 vs spread in first round last six years. Big East double digit favorites are 26-22 vs spread this year.

Villanova lost its last five games, is 5-10 in its last 15; they're first team since 2006 to get in NCAAs after losing last 4+ games, first team since '85 to get in losing five in row- their last win was in OT vs DePaul, not exactly a quality win. George Mason won 16 of last 17 games, but didn't play team ranked in top 50 (Villanova is still #28); they split pair with #54 ODU. Stokes' health is huge for Wildcats, who are thin and haven't been same since he got hurt. Villanova won four of last five in first round with last loss to Kentucky in '07. Mason makes 39.7% from arc, 12th in country. Big East teams are 9-8 when spread is 2 or less points.

Arizona missed NCAAs LY for first time in quarter century, but reality is, this is only second time since '03 that they're seeded above #8, so the decline was gradual- now they're back behind star F Williams who makes 60% outside arc, 62% inside it. Memphis coach Pastner played/coached at Arizona; his Tigers finished 4th in Conference USA, but beat UTEP in El Paso to win its conference tourney. #5-seeds are 4-8 vs spread in first round last three years. Only one senior in rotation for both teams. C-USA road underdogs of less than 8 points are 12-10 vs spread. Pac-10 road favorites of less than 7 points are 2-8 vs spread this season.

No 16-seed has ever beaten a #1, but Hampton (2001) is last 15-seed to upset a #2 (Iowa State); Pirates only played one team all year ranked in top 150- they lost to Colorado State by hoop on a neutral floor. MEAC teams lost last nine first round games, but only one of nine losses was by more than 22 points, in '09 when Morgan State lost by 28 to Blake Griffin's Oklahoma. Duke is 12-1 in last 13 first-round games, with eight of 12 wins by 24+ points. #1 seeds are 10-6 vs spread last four years. Since 1998, Duke is 5-3 vs spread in first round when a #1 seed.

Florida State isn't good tournament team, losing last five ACC/NCAA games by 10-2-7-6-1 points; their last NCAA tournament win was '98 as a 12-seed vs TCU. Texas A&M won first round game in each of last five tourneys, winning by 8-16-5-13-16 points. Aggies started year 16-1 with only loss to ACC's Boston College on neutral court; they're 2-3 last five games- they're one of few teams in country that scores higher %age of points from foul line than behind arc. Seminoles are #2 defensive team in country; injured star Singleton was upset he didn't play last weekend, so he should go. ACC teams are 12-8 in games where spread is 3 or less.

Tex-San Antonio led by 27 at half in play-in game Wednesday, survived minor scare, advance to play #1 seed Ohio State in Cleveland, virtually a true road game. Roadrunners are 0-2 vs top 100 teams, losing to Tulsa by 25, Oklahoma State by 16. Southland teams ae 1-5 in this round last six years, with only one loss by more than 15 points. Buckeyes could be looking ahead to whoever wins Villanova-George Mason game. Big 11 double digit favorites are 18-17 vs spread this season. #1 seeds are 8-4 vs spread last three years, but #1 seed East region in just 5-13-1 in first round over the last 19 years.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                    Last-minute NCAA Tournament betting tips
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Being late to the party may float as fashionable when arriving at your office’s Christmas bash, but showing up late to the dance - the Big Dance that is - will turn your pockets inside out.

Plenty of sports bettors jump head first into the NCAA Tournament with as little handicapping as watching the selection show on Sunday night. If you’re one of these bettors, who doesn’t pay attention to the college ranks until the brackets come out, don’t worry – you still have time.

The second round of the NCAA Tournament is just hours away, kicking off four straight days of non-stop college basketball betting. Here are some tips and pointers to get you up to speed with the NCAAB sharps:

Ignore the trends, except for the No. 5 vs. No. 12

Trends are about as useful as those decorative hand towels hanging in your bathroom. Sure, they’ll get your hands dry once in a while but they’re more for looks than anything.

Heading into the tournament, news sources and statistic nerds have thrown tons of NCAA trends at the wall, and only a few of those stick. We at *********** are just as guilty for pumping up some historic numbers, putting them together more for your enjoyment than actual practical use.

But there is one trend that should carry water with bettors. Since 1988, a No. 12 seed has knocked off a No. 5 seed in all but two NCAA Tournaments. Over the past four NCAAs, the No. 12 seed is 9-7 ATS versus the No. 5, so shopping which matchup produces the annual upset is important.

Right now, the Vanderbilt-Richmond (+3) and Kansas State-Utah State (+2.5) games have the tightest pointspreads of the No. 5 vs. No. 12 contests.

Consider bench depth early, less later

How far down the bench a coach can confidently go has a huge impact in the second and third rounds of the NCAA, but carries less importance as a team gets deep in the tournament.

Teams will be going all-out in their opening game, which can sometimes leave them flat in the second-round matchup when you factor in travel and nerves. A team with a deep bench, like Kansas, can absorb a poor performance from one of its starters, while a program like Syracuse, which uses its bench sparingly, may suffer a huge drop off if a star player underperforms or gets into foul trouble.

As the field shrinks and days off become more abundant and team’s with stingy rotations have time to rest and recover, as well as mentally prepare for the upcoming round.

Of course injuries can come into play, so keep an eye out for sprained ankles and pulled hammies.

                    Consider talent early, coaching later

This strategy has been barked by a lot of the NCAA talking heads heading into Thursday.

Talent can get you through the first two games, especially for higher seeds facing lesser opponents. Matchups are the most important aspect of betting college hoops and filling out your bracket, and one bad matchup involving an uber-talented player can be the ball game.

A program loaded with potential, like Kentucky, can more than likely waltz past Princeton and West Virginia or Clemson in the third round on the backs of studs like Terrence Jones and Brandon Knight. But once that team runs into a group as equally as talented in the later rounds, that’s when coaching takes over.

It’s no coincidence that Tom Izzo has Michigan State in the Final Four almost every other year. He’s one of the few coaches who know when to take the reins and when to let his players play.

A team that will likely undergo this transition during the NCAA are the Florida Gators and Billy Donovan. Florida, a No. 2 seed in the Southeast Regional, has a talent-rich roster and a sleeper star in SEC Player of the Year, Chandler Parsons. But if the Gators are going to dig deep into the tournament this March, it will be Donovan’s two national titles that get them there.

                    Size kills

A dominant big man can carry a college team far in the NCAA. But not all size mismatches have to do with the big boys under the basket.

Size advantages on the perimeter are just as important. Smaller guards can get beat up by bigger opponents, who can back them down or shoot over them. So be wary of teams with tiny dancers in the backcourt.

Florida is one team that runs this risk with a lack of size in its guard ranks. Starters Erving Walker and Kenny Boynton stand 5-foot-11 and 6-foot-2 (in the program) respectively, leaving them vulnerable to bigger backcourts.

Having a towering frontcourt also has its advantages. Just look at Duke last March, jumping on the back of 7-footer Brian Zoubek. He was nothing more than a bag of meat in the middle for most of his college career. But Zoubek was the difference on the Blue Devils' road to the national title, averaging over seven points and 10 rebounds in the NCAA while limiting small opponents around the hoop.

Illinois is a tall team to watch this March. The Fighting Illini have a tough second-round opener against UNLV (-2.5), but boast one of the biggest squads in the land. Mike Tisdale is a legit 7-footer, starting forwards Mike Davis and Bill Cole both stand at 6-foot-9, and Jereme Richmond (6-foot-7) and Meyers Leonard (7-foot) add more size off the bench.

The Rebels have Carlos Lopez, at 6-foot-11, and Brice Massamba, at 6-foot-10. Both of those guys come off the bench for UNLV, which starters only run as big as forward Quintrell Thomas at 6-foot-8.

Cleveland Cavaliers at Portland Trail Blazers (-14, 195)

Portland looks a whole lot better when Brandon Roy is taking it hard to the cup. His bad knees keep him from playing a ton of minutes every night, but he’s making the most of his time on the floor lately.

Roy put up 21 points against Dallas in less than 28 minutes of work, helping the Blazers to an impressive 104-101 victory over the Mavs as a 1.5-point underdog on Tuesday. He missed Wednesday’s practice with tightness in his lower back, but the team expects him to be fine to play against the Cavs, which has “trap game” written all over it. Just ask Portland coach Nate McMillan.

“Some people would call that a trap game in the NBA where you end up playing a team’s record and not playing the game,” McMillan told reporters. “We know how important this game is, and we need to come out and play a good basketball game and win this game tomorrow.”

Winning is one thing, covering this number is something totally different. We’ll stick with the over, which has cashed in on each of the last five meetings between these clubs.

                            Pick: Over

Chicago Bulls at New Jersey Nets (N/A)

As the chatter about a possible MVP for Derrick Rose gets louder by the day, his Chicago Bulls have been blowing out every team that joins them on the hardwood.
Rose put up 23 points, seven assists and four rebounds as the Bulls hammered the Wizards 98-79 on Tuesday, covering as fat 15.5-point favorites.

It was the seventh straight game that Rose scored at least 20 points, coinciding with the seven-game winning streak Chicago is on heading into Thursday’s contest. Meanwhile, the Nets are on a bit of a roll themselves with five consecutive wins and look like a totally different team now that Deron Williams is running the show.

"I think we are playing good right now, we are jelling pretty well, having such a short time together. We're having fun," Williams told reporters.

Keep an eye on this line leading up to the tip. Joakim Noah is expected to play for the Bulls after missing a couple with an illness, but Carlos Boozer’s status is still uncertain.

                            Pick: (N/A)
