    Daily Sports Roundup: March 15

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NCAA Tournament gets underway in Dayton, while the Trail Blazers get a visit from the Mavericks, and the Capitals take on the Habs.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has four games on tap for Tuesday, with Milwaukee at Atlanta, New York at Indiana, Washington at Chicago, and Dallas at Portland. The Mavericks (47-19 SU, 34-30-2 ATS) fell 96-91 at home to the Lakers in their last game on Saturday, while the Blazers (37-29 SU, 32-30-4 ATS) are coming off a 91-82 Saturday loss in Atlanta. Dallas is 2-0 against Portland so far this season, winning their most recent matchup 84-81 at home as a 2.5-point favorite on January 4 despite the absence of Dirk Nowitzki. Jason Terry and DeShawn Stevenson each tossed in 18 points for the Mavericks in that victory. LaMarcus Aldridge led the way for the Blazers with 28 points in that losing cause.

As well, the NCAA Tournament opens up on Tuesday with the first two Play-In contests at the University of Dayton Arena: N.C. Asheville vs. Arkansas Little Rock, and UAB vs. Clemson. N.C. Asheville (19-13 SU, 3-1 ATS) won the Big South Conference tourney, and they're listed as 4-point favorites against the Sun Belt champs from Arkansas Little Rock (19-16 SU, 13-14 ATS); the winner of that game will be a No. 16 seed. UAB (22-8 SU, 17-11-1 ATS) and Clemson (21-11 SU, 13-13-2 ATS) will be battling for a No. 12 seed. UAB lost in the quarterfinals of the CUSA tournament to East Carolina, while Clemson (-4.5 for Tuesday) fell in OT to North Carolina in the semis of the ACC tourney.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL offers up a busy night of 10 games on Tuesday, with Boston at Columbus, the Islanders at the Rangers, Atlanta at New Jersey, Pittsburgh at Ottawa, Philadelphia at Florida, Carolina at Buffalo, Los Angeles at Nashville, San Jose at Dallas, Phoenix at Calgary, and Washington at Montreal. The 40-20-10 Capitals ride an eight-game winning streak into Tuesday's matchup, getting past Chicago 4-3 at home in their last game on Sunday. The 38-24-7 Canadiens are coming off a 3-0 win in Pittsburgh in their last game on Saturday, with Carey Price making 26 saves for the shutout. The Capitals and Canadiens have split their season set a game apiece to date.

Tuesday's betting tips: Clemson favored over UAB

      Lines to watch

Arkansas-Little Rock at N.C. Asheville – UNC Asheville opened as a 2.5-point favorite but now sits around -4 for Tuesday’s game. The total has also dropped from 134.5 to 128.

      Who’s hot

NBA: The under is 21-6 in Milwaukee’s last 27 games.

NBA: New York is 20-7-1 against the spread in its last 28 road games.

NHL: Washington is riding an eight-game winning streak and has just one loss in its last 11 games.

NHL: The Rangers have won five of their last six meetings with the New York Islanders.

NCAAB: The under is 9-3-1 in Clemson’s last 13 games.

      Who’s not

NBA: Washington has just one outright win in its last 11 games and has covered the number only once over the six contests.

NBA: Dallas is riding a 1-5 run against the spread.

NHL: Columbus has just one win in its last seven games.

      Key stat

20 – The UAB Blazers have been a goldmine for their supporters this season, posting a 17-11-1 record against the spread, which ranks 20th in the nation. However, after the Blazers finished the regular season winning and covering their last three games, they lost 75-70 in overtime to East Carolina as a 7-point favorite in the conference tournament.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Dustin Byfuglien, Atlanta Thrashers: The Thrashers could be without arguably their best defenseman Tuesday when they visit the streaking New Jersey Devils on Tuesday as a +170 underdog. Byfuglien was forced to leave Monday’s practice early with some sort of lower body injury and is considered questionable. He sits third in team scoring with 19 goals and 50 points this season.

      Game of the day

      Clemson vs. UAB (4.5, 121)

      Notable quotable

“They seem to be similar to us, in that they’re defensive minded. They shoot a lot of 3’s and make a lot of 3’s, so that will certainly be a point of emphasis.” – Clemson coach Brad Brownell on his team’s matchup with the UAB Blazers on Tuesday. Clemson is currently set as a 4.5-point favorite and the winner of this game will face off against No. 5 seed West Virginia.

      Notes and tips

D.J. Cunningham, UNC Asheville’s 6-foot-10 center, is expected to play Tuesday against Arkansas-Little Rock after sitting out most the Big South Conference Tournament with a sprained ankle. Cunningham will be a big boost for the club, bringing nine points and 7.5 rebounds per game to the table. Don’t overlook the layoff factor with Cunningham and his teammates though. UNC Asheville hasn’t played a game in more than a week after winning its conference tourney.

The Philadelphia Flyers will be without a major part of their team now that defenseman Chris Pronger will be out at least three weeks with a broken hand. Pronger, who averages more than 22 minutes of ice time per game, is scheduled to undergo surgery on Tuesday as the Flyers get ready for a date with the Florida Panthers. Philadelphia is set as a -165 favorite on the road.

The Atlanta Hawks are hoping to have big man Al Horford back in the lineup Tuesday, but it’s not written in stone just yet. Horford, who’s averaging almost 16 points and 10 rebounds per game, missed Saturday’s win over Portland and says he’s ready to go, but coach Larry Drew isn’t completely convinced just yet. Atlanta is up against Milwaukee Tuesday.

        Tuesday's six-pack

Long Island University is in Brooklyn, but its basketball team recruits players from everywhere but Kings County........
        -- 4 players from Canada.
-- 3 players from Texas (two from San Antonio)
-- 2 players from Silver Spring, MD
        -- 1 player from Switzerland
        -- 1 player from Minnesota
-- 1 player from Pittsfield, MA
-- 1 player from New Jersey
-- 1 player from New York City (Queens)

        **************************

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...........

        13) UAB-Clemson play at 9pm Tuesday in Dayton, then play at 12:15 Thursday afternoon in Tampa. Very tough turnaround for whomever wins that interesting game Tuesday night.

        12) Penn State-Temple scrimmaged back in October, and played the previous two years, with Owls winning both games, 65-59/45-42, so the teams are familiar with each other.

        11) Maryland got subbed by the NIT; not sure why that tournament didn’t want the Terps, but Maryland isn’t playing in postseason for the first time in 17 years.

        10) In the last seven tournament, ’07 Florida Gators are the only #1 overall seed that won the national championship.

        9) When the head of the Basketball Selection Committee says he had no idea Memphis coach Josh Pastner played/coached at Arizona, I’m thinking maybe the head of the committee should be a little more well-versed on the sport than that. You know, so he doesn’t sound like a fool afterwards.

        8) UConn got fairly tough draw with a Thursday night game, after playing five games in five nights in Big East tournament. You’d have thought they might throw the Huskies a Friday game, but they didn’t.

        7) Learned a good new phrase Sunday night from former Wake Forest coach Dino Gaudio Sunday night-- "functional intelligence". Has to do with a player's ability to think/make adjustments on his own, on the fly.

        6) End of PGA tournament from Puerto Rico Sunday turn into one of the worst gag jobs I've seen in a while, but the guy who choked won anyway. Michael Bradley had a one-stroke lead on 18, had a 12-foot putt for bird, and then 3-putted. He admitted before the playoff in an interview that his hands were shaking badly before the par putt.

He won the playofff when Troy Matteson 3-putted the same 18th green, missing an even shorter par putt. Not the Tour's finest moment.

        5) Denver Nuggets are 8-2 since trading Carmelo Anthony; they dumped a lot of salary but actually became a better team. Doesn't happen a lot.

        4) Of the first 88 flagrant fouls called in the NBA this season, none were called when Dwight Howard was fouled, even though he gets fouled more than any other player. Thats the root of the war of words last week with Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy and NBA commissioner David Stern.

        3) Baseball players get hurt too much; the A's are on their third trainer in last five years, but closer Andrew Bailey left Monday's game holding his right elbow, which obviously is a bad sign. Its only March 14, you would think most everyone would be healthy but thats not the case.

        2) Looks like Neftali Feliz wants to be a starting pitcher for Texas, but if thats true, then who will the Rangers use as a closer?

        1) You don't think one player makes a big difference in the NBA? Since adding Deron Williams, Nets have perked up- they upset Celtics Monday night, their fifth win in row, the longest winning streak for New Jersey in over three years. Adding a player like Williams gives a franchise hope.

          NCAA Tournament: Opening line report

At 5:30 p.m. Las Vegas time, about an hour and a half after the NCAA tournament bracket was finalized, Tony Sinisi, head oddsmaker for the Las Vegas Sports Consultants, released his line recommendations for all 36 first and second round games.

“I’ve done all the damage I can do,” an exhausted Sinisi, who’s been setting Vegas lines for more than 20 years, told ***********. “It’s a quick, mad scramble. It gets a little confusing when you’re trying to fill it in while watching it on TV. I try to do it every year, but usually I give up after about two minutes. You’d think all the years I’ve been doing this I’d get better at it, but I throw up my hands quickly.”

Sinisi said he completely agreed with the No. 1 seeds and has Ohio State rated one-point higher than Kansas, followed by Duke and Pittsburgh.

The Belmont-Wisconsin matchup was among the most challenging for Sinisi to handicap. It was the first time he had set a line on a game involving Belmont all season. He sent out Wisconsin -6.

“With all the data I’m using, Belmont is extremely highly rated,” Sinisi said. “When you’re dealing with an UNLV-Illinois or what have you, there’s a certain comfort level. But when you throw in the Belmonts of the world, it can get a little hairy.”

One of the biggest early line moves came on Michigan State-UCLA. Bookmaker, which was among the very first offshore books to put up lines, opened UCLA as a 1-point favorite. Within minutes, the Spartans were favored by 2.

Pete Korner, another prominent Las Vegas oddsmaker and owner of the Sports Club, sent out Michigan State as a 1-point favorite. Sinisi opened the game as a Pick ‘em.

In future odds, Korner lists Ohio State at +300 as the favorite to win the tournament, followed by Kansas at +450, Duke +500 and Pittsburgh +700.

The play-in games also made oddsmakers’ jobs a little more difficult this season. In Tuesday’s games, UNC-Asheville opened as a 3-point favorite over Arkansas-Little Rock. Clemson opened as 3.5-point favorite over UAB.

“It’s unchartered territory,” Sinisi said. “Playing Tuesday and Thursday or Wednesday and Friday, it’s something we’re going to have to see how those teams respond and how bettors react.”

On Wednesday, Texas-San Antonio is a 6-point favorite over Alabama State, and Southern Cal is a 2.5-point favorite over a Virginia Commonwealth team that most people were shocked made the field. In fact, VCU’s players and coaches reportedly didn’t even gather to watch the tournament selection show.

“One of those 11 or 12 seeds is going to knock off a 5 or a 6 because they’ve already got a tournament game under their belt,” Fran Fraschilla, a former Manhattan and St. John’s coach who is now an ESPN analyst told the New York Times. “You get the kinks and the nervousness out and have an N.C.A.A. win to your credit, and it actually may turn out to be detrimental to the higher seed.”

          Biggest Spread

Both Duke and Kansas, the two No. 1 seeds that don’t have to wait to see who wins the play-in games are 22.5-point favorites.

Duke faces Hampton on Friday in Charlotte, N. C. Kansas takes on Boston University on Friday in Tulsa.

          Smallest Spread

Korner released three games as Pick ‘ems: St. John’s-Gonzaga, Florida State-Texas A&M and Butler-Old Dominion.

          Largest Total

Korner has the Texas-Oakland total at 151. Oakland leads the nation at 85.6 points per game, but also surrenders a tournament field-worst 76.6 points per game.

          Smallest Total

Korner released the total on Old Dominion-Butler at 121.

            Best early tournament betting trends

The 2011 NCAA tournament has arrived along with our final chance to pad our bankrolls for the season. To make that shining moment happen, let’s take a look at how teams in this event have fared recently.

All results are since 1991 unless noted otherwise.

NCAA TOURNEY – MOST RECENT TRENDS

            • No. 1 seeds are 80-0 straight up (SU) and 45-34-1 against the spread (ATS) vs. No. 16 seeds

            • No. 2 seeds are 76-4 SU and 31-41-4 ATS vs. No.15 seeds

            • Only twice since 1988 has a No. 12 seed failed to beat a No. 5 seed (4-4 SU and 6-2 ATS over the last two years)

            • Favorites of more than seven points who are 3-0 SU and ATS in their last three games are 15-30-1 ATS vs. a foe coming off a SU win

            • Favorites between -4 and -12 playing an opponent off back-to-back SU underdog wins are 41-15-1 ATS (30-7-1 ATS over the last 10 years)

            • Favorites of more than 20 points are 3-12 ATS vs. a foe off an SU win

            • Favorites of more than seven points who scored more than 100 points in last conference tourney game are 11-2 ATS

            • Underdogs of more than four points playing off an SU conference tourney win as an underdog of more than six points are 5-26-1 ATS last 11 years

            • Underdogs of more than 18 points off a double-digit ATS win are 5-1 ATS

Because it’s my belief that success in handicapping this tournament is tantamount to breaking the action down into rounds, let’s take a look at some of the more relevant trend results that have occurred in recent first round games. Note: This refers to Thursday and Friday games during the opening week of the NCAA tourney, which are now referred to as "second round" games in 2011.

            • No 3. seeds off an SU favorite loss are 30-1 SU and 22-8-1 ATS (6-1 over the last four years)

            • No. 4 seeds are 26-13 ATS as favorites of less than nine points (9-3 over the last five years)

            • No. 9 seeds are 2-6 ATS as favorites of more than three points

                    Tuesday's play-in games
Arkansas-Little Rock is 2nd-shortest team in America; they're first team from Sun Belt to be in a play-in game. Since 2003, Sun Belt teams lost nine of 12 NCAA games, are 0-8 when less than a 12 seed, play-in game is lesser competition than that. NC-Asheville is in tournament for first time since '03; Big South teams are 1-19 in NCAAs (Winthrop won 1st round game in '97). Asheville forces turnovers on 24.5% on possessions, very high percentage, but Little Rock is a guard-heavy team.

UAB was ripped far-and-wide Sunday wide for not deserving to be here, so easy motivation for Coach Davis, who is in NCAAs or first time in five years. UAB is 2-7 in last nine first-round games, with last win back in '05. Clemson was 0-4 in first-round games under Purnell; Brownell is new coach- he coached at Wright State here in Dayton LY. Tigers' last win in NCAAs was in '97. Clemson beat East Carolina by 12, the team that knocked UAB out of Conference USA tournament. Sun Belt road dogs of 7 or less points are 7-17 vs spread. ACC road favorites of less than 7 points are 9-8 vs spread.

                    Wednesday's play-in games
SWAC teams are 1-16 in NCAAs, with Ark-Pine Bluff winning LY in a play-in game vs Winthrop; Alabama State is 0-4 in NCAAs the last ten years- they won 11 of last 12 games, are team that uses its bench more than anyone in country. Texas-San Antonio won its last five games, with three of last four wins by 5 or less points. Southland teams are 1-8 last eight years in NCAA's; this is their first play-in game since '01. ASU is an aggressive defensive team that allowed 58.3 ppg in SWAC tourney.

USC has long trip east to play VCU squad that is 3-5 in last eight games, but a team that beat UCLA 89-85 on a neutral court last fall. UNC-Asheville vs. Arkansas-Little Rock (-4, 129.5)

                        THE STORY
: Cinderellas square off in Dayton, Ohio on Tuesday night when North Carolina-Asheville plays Arkansas-Little Rock in a battle of No. 16 seeds. The Bulldogs are making their second NCAA tournament appearance, the other coming in 2003, while the Trojans haven’t been to the tourney since 1990. Both made surprising runs to win their conference tournaments. UNC-Asheville knocked off Coastal Carolina 60-47 in the Big South final, holding the top seed to 34 percent shooting. UALR edged North Texas 64-63 in the Sun Belt final on Solomon Bozeman’s 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds left.

                        TV: 6:30 p.m. ET, truTV. POINTSPREAD: UNC-Asheville -4

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA-ASHEVILLE (19-13): The Bulldogs have won six straight, including two victories over a Coastal Carolina squad that at one point had a nation-best 22-game win streak. UNC-Asheville owns a win over Auburn and hung with North Carolina in Chapel Hill; the Bulldogs trailed by six with five minutes left before falling 80-69. Averaging 74.2 points (47th nationally), UNC-Asheville runs an up-tempo attack keyed by junior guards Matt Dickey (15.3 points, 3.3 assists), J.P. Primm (14.4 points, 4.6 assists) and Chris Stephenson (14 points, 8 rebounds in the Big South final). The Bulldogs are relying even more heavily on their backcourt now that center D.J. Cunningham is out for the season with a foot injury. One of the Bulldogs’ bugaboos is ball security. They average 15 turnovers, which ranks 272nd nationally.

ABOUT ARKANSAS-LITTLE ROCK (19-16): The Trojans ended the regular season with three straight losses, then won four games in four days for their first Sun Belt title. Bozeman, the conference Player of the Year, poured in 88 points in the tourney, half of them at the foul line. The 6-foot senior averages 16.5 points and 2.7 assists, and shoots 46 percent from beyond the arc. He’s a big reason why UALR ranks 14th nationally in 3-point shooting (39.8 percent). UALR prefers a more deliberate style and commits just 11.8 turnovers per game (38th nationally). But the Trojans, who like UNC-Asheville lack a big post presence, have a rebounding margin of -1.5. That's worse than UNC-Asheville's -0.4.

UP NEXT: Winner plays No. 1 seed Pittsburgh on Thursday in Washington, D.C.

TRENDS: UNC-Asheville has covered the spread in each of its last three games.
Arkansas-Little Rock has covered the number in four straight.
Arkansas-Little Rock has played under in seven of its last 10 games.

PREDICTION: North Carolina-Asheville 72, Arkansas-Little Rock 65 – Bozeman will be the best player on the court, but look for the Bulldogs to assert their tempo and run past the Trojans.

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clemson Tigers vs. UAB Blazers (-4.5, 121)

                          THE STORY
: Clemson and Alabama-Birmingham--two of the final four at-large teams included in the field—collide Tuesday in the newly expanded first round of the NCAA tournament. It’s a brutal turnaround, travel-wise, for the winning squad. They play the late game at Dayton on Tuesday then play an early-afternoon contest on Thursday in Tampa.

TV: 9:10 p.m. EST, truTV. POINTSPREAD: Clemson -4.5.

ABOUT UAB (22-8): The regular-season champion in Conference USA, UAB overcame an overtime loss to East Carolina in the C-USA tournament to earn a controversial at-large berth. It’s the first NCAA tournament trip for UAB during the five-year tenure of coach Mike Davis. UAB reached the tournament on the strength of a stingy defense that has allowed just 62.3 points per game. Senior Jamarr Sanders led C-USA in scoring at 17.7 points per game, but he’s tallied just 85 points in his last six games since dropping a career-high 37 on Feb. 12 against Rice.

ABOUT CLEMSON (21-11): First-year coach Brad Brownell has led Clemson to its fourth straight NCAA tournament appearance. That’s the most consecutive NCAA trips in Clemson history. Not bad for a Tigers team picked seventh in the ACC in preseason. Clemson finished strong, winning three of its final four games to close the regular season before falling short in overtime against North Carolina in the semifinals of the ACC tournament. Leading scorer Demontez Stitt came up big in the ACC tourney, scoring 45 total points in two contests. The Tigers are the best defensive team in the ACC, allowing a league-low 60.9 points per game.

UP NEXT: The winner plays fifth-seeded West Virginia on Thursday at 12:15 p.m.

TRENDS: Under is 7-1 in UAB's last eight non-conference games.
Under is 9-3-1 in Clemson's last 13 games overall.
Clemson is 3-0-1 against the spread in its last four games.

PREDICTION: Clemson 63, UAB 56 – Clemson’s tough defense and superior schedule gives the Tigers the edge. Look for Clemson to snap its five-game losing streak in the NCAA tournament.

                            NBA

Dallas Mavericks at Portland Trail Blazers (1, 189.5)

This is the third meeting of the season between the two teams after the Mavericks took the first couple of contests by nine points combined, so it’s no surprise to see a tight spread here.

The Blazers are coming off a road trip that saw them drop the Heat and Magic before losing at Charlotte and Atlanta.

"The road trip was not as good as we wanted, but we will take two wins over nothing any day, especially against high-caliber teams such as Miami and Orlando," guard Wes Matthews told the Blazers' official website. "Those wins give us confidence knowing we can play with everybody."

Especially when LaMarcus Aldridge is on his game. The Dallas native is averaging 31.5 points and 10 rebounds against the Mavericks this season.

The Mavs are getting solid numbers from Dirk Nowitzki and Shawn Marion on most nights, but the club has covered just one of the last six pointspreads it has seen.

                            Pick: Trail Blazers

Clemson Tigers at UAB Blazers (4.5, 120)

Whether or not you like this new First Four format the NCAA Tournament is adopting this year, you have to admit this is a very interesting matchup. The Tigers and Blazers square off for the right to battle No. 5 seed West Virginia.

Both teams have holes, but the Tigers come into this one on a roll, going 3-0-1 against the spread in their last four and pushing the North Carolina Tar Heels to overtime before losing in the ACC Tournament.

Demontez Stitt went off for 25 points against the Heels and is a major threat, leading the team in points (14.7 per game) and assists (3.4). Meanwhile, the Blazers have a bunch of guys that can shoot the lights out, but many are wondering how they made the big dance.

Considering the competition Clemson has been up against all year in the ACC, we’ll eat the chalk in this matchup.

                            Pick: Tigers
